You're Welcome
...
Third Person P.O.V
A basket washes up onto shore, the sky now clear and the sun shining brightly. Ari and (Y/N)'s ship was flipped onto the sand, mostly undamaged.
Hei Hei clucks from his spot on the boat, a pot on his head. He shakes it off, stepping out onto nothing and shrieking in alarm as he falls.
Hei Hei lands in the pot once more, Ari jolting up and coughing as he wipes sand from his face.
He sputters lightly, groaning as he rises and stretches his back. He checks on the heart, clicking the necklace open and shutting it when he sees the green stone.
Ari's dazed look fades to alarm, his eyes widening as he gasps. "(Y/N)!"
He wipes the rest of the sand from his face and hair, swiftly looking around.
"Over here," (Y/N)'s voice calls, making him skid to a stop and rush to it.
She was sitting up in the sand, dusting off her face and hair and groaning groggily.
"You okay?" Ari questions in concern, kneeling next to her as she nods slowly.
"Yeah, yeah," (Y/N) confirms wiping sand off her arms as Ari helps her rise. "Just... Sore kind of. What happened?"
Ari grunts in anger, turning to glare at the ocean. "I'll tell you what! The ocean didn't help us!"
He stomps towards it angrily, his arms waving around with the action as (Y/N) watches with a raised brow.
Ari comes to a stop, stomping his foot. "Um, what?! She said help us!"
(Y/N) snickers lightly as he shouts at the ocean before looking around, her eyes landing on the wall behind her.
"Uh... Ari?"
"And wrecking our boat? Not. Helping!" Ari finishes, firmly pointing back to the toppled boat before swinging his leg back.
He goes to kick the water, the ocean moving from his path and causing him to fall back.
"Ari?"
"Fish pee in you all day!" Ari childishly grumbles, rising and pointing his finger to the ocean as he waves it. "So..."
He growls in frustration, (Y/N) walking over with her own angry huff.
"Ari!"
Ari jumps in alarm, quickly turning to her in bewilderment. Her expression was firm, her hands on her hips.
"... Yes?"
She points behind her, making him peek around curiously before his face falls in confusion.
Hei Hei clucks, as he walks into the wall multiple times, the pot still on his head.
"What? Seems about normal to me," Ari mumbles in a monotone, raising a brow at the rooster.
"No, not that." (Y/N) sighs, turning around to face Hei Hei. "That."
She points to the right, Ari following her finger before gasping softly. Littering the wall were large fish hooks, tallies as the design to symbolize the days.
"Maui?"
Ari questions, the two turning to the ocean. It rises, nodding and lowering back into itself.
"Guess the ocean did help," (Y/N) says as she looks over the marks. "In its own weird way."
The sound of someone approaching causes Ari to look over, (Y/N) noticing a shadow moving along the wall.
"Maui!" She whispers, the figure getting closer.
Ari's eyes narrow as he takes her hand, grabbing the oar stuck in the ground. He hands it to (Y/N), grabbing Hei Hei as he caws and ducking behind their boat.
"Okay, okay," Ari sighs nervously, (Y/N) clutching the oar. "Maui, demigod of the wind and sea... We are Ari and (Y/N) of Motunui." He practices firmly, "you will board our boat. No..."
Ari clears his throat, his voice lower and stronger, "you will board our boat. Yeah?"
(Y/N) nods with a thumbs up, nervously peeking out the side of the boat and seeing nothing.
"Okay. We are Ari and (Y/N) of Motunui. You will board our..."
"Boat! A boat!"
(Y/N) gasps, Ari's eyes widening as a man starts yelling. The boat was raised, making Ari push her behind him as she holds the oar in front of her.
"The gods have given me a--"
Maui looks down and shrieks when he sees the two, dropping the boat and cowering away.
(Y/N) and Ari were nowhere to be seen, making Maui glance away awkwardly before raising the boat once more.
Hei Hei's head was poking out of the sand, a small caw escaping him.
(Y/N) clears her throat from behind him, making him jump lightly before turning with the boat.
Ari and (Y/N) duck under it, (Y/N) planting the oar down as Ari glares at Maui. She sighs in relief, Ari having saved them from being crushed by the boat by grabbing her by her waist and moving them out of the way.
Ari checks over her before becoming serious as he faces Maui. He had to look up only slightly, the two nearly being equal in height.
"Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea," Ari begins, his voice confident as he maintains eye contact. "We are Ari and (Y/N) of--"
"Hero of men." Maui adds.
"What?" (Y/N) questions, her brows furrowing.
"Its actually Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men," Maui explains, holding up his fingers as he lists the titles.
(Y/N) and Ari look at one another in disbelief, Maui holding his hand up apologetically.
"I interrupted. From the top," he urges before adding. "Hero of men."
He nods, shooting Ari a finger gun.
"Go."
(Y/N) shrugs at Ari before nodding for him to continue.
"... We are--"
"Sorry, sorry, sorry!" Maui quickly interrupts once more. "And women. Didn't want you to feel left out," he says with a wink (Y/N)'s way. "Men and women. Both. All. Not a guy girl thing."
(Y/N)'s mouth slightly dropped, annoyance written on her face. Ari growled lowly to himself in irritation, shaking his head with a heavy sigh.
"You know, Maui is a hero to all. You're doing great." He shoots Ari another finger gun, clicking his tongue.
"Just-- no! We're here to--"
"Of course!" Maui smacks his forehead in a 'duh' motion, "of course."
He sets the boat down, nodding. "Yes, yes, yes, yes. Maui always has time for his fans."
"Fans?" (Y/N) questions as he takes the oar from her hand, reaching down and grabbing Hei Hei from the sand.
Maui uses Hei Hei to carve into the oar, (Y/N) scoffing in disbelief. "When you use a bird to write... It's called tweeting."
He finishes, tossing away Hei Hei and handing (Y/N) the oar. Ari peeks over at it, his expression frustrated at the drawing of a heart and Maui's hook.
"You--"
Once again, Maui interrupts Ari with a chuckle. "I know, I know. It's not every day you get a chance to meet your hero."
(Y/N) rolls her eyes as he leans closer to her, taking the oar and slamming it against Maui's stomach before tossing it away and grabbing his ear.
"You are anything but our hero!" She says strongly as she pulls his ear, Ari's expression melting from anger to amusement and pride as he folds his arms. "And we aren't here just for you to sign our oar!"
"Exactly," Ari joins in, Maui's gaze shifting from (Y/N) to him. "We are here because you stole the heart of Te Fiti!"
He shows the heart, Maui's eyes becoming wide for a moment before Ari clicks the necklace shut.
"And you will board our boat, and sail across the sea and put it back..."
(Y/N) attempts to pull him to the boat, Maui not moving as Ari trails off.
"Um," Maui drags the word, (Y/N) yelping as he rises to his full height and she was lifted. "Yeah. It almost sounds like you two don't like me..."
He grabs (Y/N)'s head, gently moving her away from him and setting her down.
"Which is impossible, because I got stuck here for a thousand years," Maui chuckles bitterly, gesturing to the island. "Trying to get the heart as a gift for you mortals. So you could have the power to create life itself!"
(Y/N) looks to Ari in confusion, the story different than the one they were told, believing he only took it for himself.
"Yeah," Maui nods, shrugging. "So, what I believe you were trying to say... Is 'thank you'."
"Thank you?" Ari repeats with a scoff.
"You're welcome! Do I get one from you as well?" Maui grins, (Y/N) shaking her head with a heavy sigh.
"No. Never, I mean literally why would--"
"And I didn't-- I wasn't-- why would we ever--?"
Both stammer, Maui cutting them off with a laugh.
"Okay, okay."
"I see what's happening, yeah!" Maui lifts his necklace, revealing a smaller version tattooed on himself. "You're face to face with greatness and it's strange."
The tattoo moves, winking at the two and waving. (Y/N) double-takes, Ari blinking rapidly.
"You don't even know how you feel. It's adorable!"
Maui laughs, patting (Y/N)'s head and tossing his necklace away. She smacks her hands towards him as he pulls away, huffing in annoyance.
"Well, it's nice to see that humans never change." He fist bumps with his miniature self, now on his bicep.
"Open your eyes, let's begin!"
Maui takes (Y/N)'s hand, twirling her around as she yelps. Ari rushes to her aide, stopping her and steadying her dizzy self before glaring at Maui.
"Yes, it's really me! It's Maui! Breathe it in!" Maui shrugs, picking up the oar and tossing it to Ari.
He catches it, planting it in the sand with his hand holding the staff part.
"I know, it's a lot! The hair, the bod!"
Maui flexes, (Y/N) unimpressed and Ari glancing between her and him. He notices she didn't react, mentally sighing in relief.
"When you're staring at a demigod!"
The mini Maui bounces between his pecs, Maui starting to dance a moment after.
"What can I say except, you're welcome!"
Maui jumps onto the boat, Ari's facing showing confusion and (Y/N) just looking done with everything.
"For the tides, the sun, the sky?"
He jumps from the boat, dragging his hand on the sand before motioning to the sun and sky as he moves past the two.
"Hey! It's okay, it's okay, you're welcome!"
Maui drags the two with him, releasing them as he jumps onto a rock.
"I'm just an ordinary demi-guy! Hey!"
He gestures to his tattoo, the mini Maui lifting the sky-like tattoo.
"What has two thumbs and pulled up the sky, when you were waddling yay high? This guy!"
Maui claps, (Y/N) jumping lightly from the sound and Ari looking at her in amusement.
"When the nights got cold, who stole you fire from down below?" Maui gestures to his stomach tattoo, the mini Maui swiping fire and rushing away.
"You're looking at him, yo!"
He grins, leaning towards the two wrapping an arm around Ari' shoulder and motioning to another tattoo.
"Oh! Also I lassoed the sun, you're welcome!" Maui whispers the last part to (Y/N) as she watches the mini Maui.
"To stretch your days and bring you fun!" He moves around Ari, leading him further away from the boat while dancing. "Also, I harnessed the breeze. You're welcome!"
The mini Maui flies a kite in the breeze, flying away. He flies past a boat and trees, the wind moving them.
"To fill your sails and shake your trees!"
Mini Maui lands on a crowd of people, all smiling as they carry him while he lounges.
"So what can I say except you're welcome? For the islands I pulled from the sea!"
He jumps off the crowd onto a boat, sailing on a wave as he uses his hook to pull islands out of the water.
"There's no need to pray, it's okay! You're welcome!"
Ari, gaining some actual respect from the stories, can't help but smile lightly. (Y/N) glances between him and Maui, unsure if she should trust the man who brought darkness onto them.
"Ha! I guess it's just my way of being me!"
Maui bows, gesturing to himself.
"You're welcome, you're welcome!"
"You... Really did all that?" (Y/N) questions, making him pause in thought.
"Well, come to think of it..." He says, raising a cloth with a pattern as the background suddenly changes.
"Kids, honestly I could go on and on, I could explain every natural phenomenon!"
Maui smirks, mystically waving his hands in front of him.
"The tides? The grass? The ground?" He questions, swimming before landing in a field as underneath was revealed. "Oh, that was Maui just messing around!"
Maui grabs an eel, burying it. "I killed an eel, I buried its guts. Sprouted a tree now you got coconuts!"
He climbs the tree, coconuts falling from it. He then moves in, grabbing a monster and easily ridding of it.
"What's the lesson? What is the take away? Don't mess with Maui when he's on a breakaway!"
He dunks the monster into the mouth of another larger one, rolling as he lands.
"And the tapestry here on my skin," Maui gestures to himself, as certain tattoos were zoomed in on, "is a map of the victories I win! Look where I've been, I make everything happen!"
His mini self starts dancing on his shoulder, smiling widely.
"Look at the mean mini-Maui just tickety tappin!" Maui shows off to (Y/N), Ari frowning slightly. "Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha--"
Ari tugs (Y/N) behind him, folding his arms at the man and snapping from his daze for a moment. Maui nervously smiles as he continues, attempting to distract them once more with tricks and stories.
(Y/N) looks around at all the colors before gasping, something grabbing her wrist.
The ocean tugs her back to the shore, making her grunt as she lands on her bum. It attempts to do the same to Ari, missing his arm as Maui leads him further away.
"Hey! Well, anyway let me say, you're welcome!"
"You're welcome!"
(Y/N) looks around in confusion before gasping, noticing Maui leading Ari to a cave.
"For the wonderful world you know!"
Maui rolls a coconut on his arm, tossing it to Ari. Ari catches it, looking at it before feeling something off.
"Hey it's okay, it's okay! You're welcome!"
"You're welcome!"
(Y/N) rushes after the two, Hei Hei clucking as he waddles around absent-mindedly.
"Well, come to think of it... I gotta go!"
Maui continues to show off, Ari looking around in awe.
"Hey, it's your day to say you're welcome!".
"You're welcome!"
"Cause I'm gonna need that boat!"
Ari blinks lightly in confusion, tilting his head.
"I'm sailing away, away! You're welcome! Cause Maui can do anything but float! You're welcome! You're welcome!"
He lightly shoves Ari's back, making him stagger and shake his head rapidly before snapping out of his daze.
"And thank you!"
Maui seals the cave with a large boulder, Ari gasping with wide eyes.
