Chapter 62: Rescued

Evelyn stared at the lady, who worked for WICKED, crumpled on the floor at her feet. She had just taken some ones life with her bare hands. Yes she worked for the Creators, for WICKED, for the horrible people who ripped her memory and threw her into a terrible place full of blood death and fear... Evelyn lifted her hands out in front of her to see them. They were still glowing and shimmering an icy blue, her hand were freezing, but slowly warming up, the sharp stabbing pain was decreasing. Evelyn looked back down at the lady. Realization hit her like a blow to the chest, she took someone's life with her power.

She slowly turned around to face the silent room. She could feel the fear in the room. All sounds of the scuffle with Alby had stopped, the Gladers were also silent; she couldn't even hear the ragged breathing. She looked up, terrified to see their faces.

All eyes were wide in shock or fear, or both. A few mouths had dropped open. Evelyn was hit hard with a dizzy spell. Her eyelids fluttered and her knees buckled. Before she hit the floor someone caught her.

"Evelyn?" Newt stammered, the fear clear in his voice.

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry! Newt! I didn't mean to! I was so...so.." She covered her face and cried. Newt pulled her into his chest and held her. "I promised I'd save him! I promised him, Newt..to take him home! I promised him!" She sobbed into his chest. Her fists grabbing onto his shirt, clenching it tight. Great, racking sobs echoed through the room like the sounds of tortured pain. The people behind the glass just sat there blank faced and watched. Thomas had collapsed to his knees beside a beaten and bloodied Alby. He had taken his anger out on the boy who held back the only hope they had to save Chuck. Minho and Sonny had yanked him off. Gally lay in his own blood and the rest of the Gladers all stood around, unsure and scared.

Teresa dropped down beside Evelyn and Newt and she placed her hand on Evelyn's shoulder. Finally, Evelyn took a ragged shuddering breath, reeled in the pain, locked it somewhere deep inside her, along with her shattered heart and dark broken soul. Her head rolled, her eyes coming in and out of focus, she looked over at Teresa and her enormous blue eyes, heavy with sadness, just as much for her as for Chuck, she was sure of it.

"...I'm sorry Love, I'm so sorry!"

Evelyn's eyes shifted to Newt, his big brown eyes looked so broken and lost. He was going to say something when there was a loud shout, and wild commotion on the other side of the glass. The door beeped and it swung open. Everyone looked around. Men in black army gear, and masks came storming into the room guns raised. They were yelling and screaming words over each other. It was impossible to understand what they were saying. The Gladers ducked, as the computer screens smashed. Newt stood up, pulling Evelyn up as well. She was extremally unsteady on her feet. A man walked up to the Gladers as the others in his group spread out around them, sweeping their guns left and right as they shot some more at the observation windows, shattering more of the glass. Evelyn could heard screams, saw blood, looked away, focused on the man who approached them. He had dark hair, his face young but full of wrinkles around the eyes, as if he'd spent each day of his life worrying about how to make it to the next.

"We don't have time to explain," the man said, his voice as strained as his face, "We work against WICKED. Come on kids! We need to hurry!"

Evelyn pulled away from Newt and threw herself back down beside Chucks body. Holding it tight. She couldn't leave him here. She couldn't!

"COME ON!" The man shouted, "WE NEED TO LEAVE!"

"NO! CHUCK! WAKE UP! PLEASE!"

Someone grabbed her shoulder, but she shook it off. She couldn't leave Chuck...or Gally or Alby. She couldn't leave them behind.

"NO! GALLY! ALBY! CHUCK! GUYS! Come on it's time to go! Please!" Evelyn knew they wouldn't, but her mind wouldn't accept that they were dead, they couldn't be.

"Come on kid!"

Two guys grabbed Evelyn around the arms and pulled her backwards. She screamed and cried, twisting trying to get free. They dragged her further away from her friends, her family. There was another loud beep and big heavy doors slid open. The guys threw her down onto the ground. Sonny and Newt helped her up. She felt all her fight, and her sadness anger, fear, there was no joy in leaving the maze. She still had tears sliding down her face, but she had stopped screaming. She was numb now. She felt nothing. Trying to stay on her feet the Gladers followed the men in masks and guns. Minho and Teresa hand in hand, leading the Gladers. They ran down a long hallway, into a dimly lit tunnel. Up a winding flight of stairs. Everything was dark, smelled like electronics. Down another hallway. Up more stairs. More hallways.

Evelyn was dizzy, numb and exhausted. They reached another set of stairs, and she just collapsed. Her eyes rolled into her head and she lost all consciousness.

She became aware of something humming underneath her. It was hard and cold, but the constant hum and vibrating was soothing. She whimpered, her head was so sore. Moving hurt, she didn't want to open her eyes. She felt movement.

"Evelyn?"

She recognized that British accent. All she did was whimper again. She tried a few times to open her eyes, before they finally stayed open. Newt was looking down at her, she had her head in his lap, the Gladers all crowded, squished into what looked like a huge helicopter. There was one of the guys in black sitting with them and a woman, both with their masks off.

"What's going on?" Thomas asked.

The woman looked over at him. Her sweaty black hair clung to her her face. Dark eyes full of sorrow, "That's a very long story." The woman's voice came out much kinder than Evelyn had expected, giving her hope that she truly was a friend-that all of their rescuers were friends. Despite the fact that they'd ripped her away from Chuck.

"Please," Teresa said. "Please tell us something."

She was sitting with her back leaning into Minho's chest. His chin was resting on her shoulder. Both looked beaten down and grim. Bloodied, bruised and ripped clothing.

The woman looked between everyone. All the Gladers had turned to listen. Newt slowly helped Evelyn sit up. The woman then let out a sigh.

"It'll take a while before you get your memories back, if ever...we're not scientists, we have no idea what they did to you, or how they did it."

"Who are they? Sonny asked.

"It started with the sun flares," the woman said, her gaze growing distant.

"What-" Thomas began, but Newt shushed him, "Just let the buggen' woman talk, Tommy!"

The woman almost seemed in a trance as she spoke, never taking her eyes off an indistinctspot in the distance. "The sun flares couldn't have been predicted. Sun flares are normal, but these were unprecedented, massive, spiking higher and higher-and once they were noticed, it was only minutes before their heat slammed into Earth. First our satellites wereburned out, and thousands died instantly , millions within days, countless miles became wastelands. Then came the sickness." She paused, took a breath. "As the ecosystem fell apart, it became impossible to control the sickness-even to keep it in South America. The jungleswere gone, but the insects weren't. People call it the Flare now. It's a horrible, horrible thing. Only the richest can be treated, no one can be cured."

Horror grew in Evelyn's heart. She sat and listened as the woman continued, she couldn't keep her head up any longer, she lay it down on Newt's shoulder, closing her eyes and listened to the woman continue talking. Newt gently pulled her so she was leaning on his chest, his hand gently rubbing calming circles on her back. It was calming for the both of them.

"As for you, all of you...you're just a few of millions orphaned. They tested thousands, chose you for the big one. The ultimate test. Everything you lived through was calculated and thought through. Catalysts to study your reactions, your brain waves, your thoughts. All in an attempt to find those capable of helping us find a way to beat the Flare." She paused again. "Except for you, blondie."

Evelyn opened her eyes, the woman was staring at her, "You...they kept you isolated and separate from everyone and anything. You have, so rumor has it, a special power. The power all started with the Sun flares as well...sounds like a damn fairy tail, but rumor has it a single drop of the sun fell, into some random woman's garden, growing a strange golden flower. She made a tea out of it, while she was pregnant...and from this drop of sun, came a baby with golden hair and the ability to heal the sick and injured. Now WICKED somehow found out about this child and mother. They always know everything. They have spies everywhere! One night they broke into the home and stole the child, killing the mother. WICKED was determined to keep this child hidden, and secret-"

"-In a stone chamber and tower!" Evelyn whispered, her eyes now wide and alert. She felt her heart slamming against her ribs. Her vision swam, her eyes went unfocused.

"Why can't I go outside?" Evelyn asked, her big green eyes looking up at the woman in front of her.

The world...the outside world if filled with horrible, people. You must stay here, you're safe. They will want to use you and hurt you for your gift. You are safe here. Do you understand, Evelyn? This is why you are here in the safety of the walls. Everyone out there wants to hurt you, and use you. You have something they want, but we want to keep you safe!" The woman said again when Evelyn asked about leaving her room.

"But....even if I stay inside the building? I can't go see other people?" She asked, her big green eyes looking up at the woman. The lady shook her head, "No. It's too dangerous."

"Please...may I please go out?"

The back of the hand came up and Evelyn flinched back, the hand stopped just before it made contact with her face.

"Do not ask again."

Newt had her face in his hands. She had spaced out, the memory or dream from the Glade came rising to the surface.

"Holly shuck!" She whispered, her body had started to shake and tremble. Her chest was heaving, gasping for air.

"Lee? Breath, Love. You're going to pass out. You're okay, I'm here, I'm here! Breath" Newt pulled her head and gently rested his forehead on hers. Evelyn grabbed onto his shirt, burying her face into his chest, trying to keep some grasp on reality.

"Shh, Love, you're okay. We escaped, we're out." He whispered, trying to calm her. Despite all the Gladers the their rescuers watching, he kissed her gently. Her shoulders loss some of their wild tension. He pulled away, and laid her head on his chest, cupping the back of her head. Holding her tightly, protectively. He glared at the woman.

"That's a lot of buggen' information to drop on her."

The woman in front of them nodded with a shrug. She talked to Newt this time. "They wanted to keep her on a tight leash, hoping she would be the cure for all man kind; testing her, using her ability for WICKED. Hoping her healing power and your kids immunity...hoping to find a cure for the Flare."

"What's the Flare?" Thomas asked.

The woman shuddered, getting that vacant lost look on her face.

"Most of the physical effects are caused by something else. First the delusions start, then animal instincts begin to overpower the human ones. Finally it consumes them, destroys their humanity. It's all in the brain. The Flare lives in the brain. It is an awful thing. Better to die than catch it." The woman broke her gaze into nothingness and focused on the Gladers. "We won't let them do this to children. We've sworn our lives to fighting WICKED. That's why we rescued you and are taking you somewhere safe."

The man beside her had stayed quiet the whole time, watching them all intently. But he finally spoke.

"Don't worry kids. You're safe now. Everything is going to change."
