Chapter 60: Near Death

The Gladers at the back pushed closer, trying to avoid the deadly monsters slowly stalking towards them. Minho quickly turned to Teresa and pulled her into a quick rough kiss.

"Be safe."

And then then turned and with a loud cry of battle took off towards the Cliff, spear and machete held ready. Newt had done the same to Evelyn, he grabbed her hips and pulled her close.

"Be safe. I love you!" He kissed her so quickly she almost missed it. He was already gone, chasing after Minho. Nick, and Sonny close behind. The rest of the Gladers surged forwards, sprinting around the trio; a tight pack of roaring boys charging ahead to a bloody battle, weapons raised. Evelyn just about threw up again, her sick stomach raising into her throat. Her chest felt like exploding with the amount of panic and histaria that was trying to escape.

She could feel every Gladers fear and panic and pain. Her knees buckled. Teresa held her up until Evelyn got her legs back under her. Thomas held  a hand of each girl tightly in his own, waiting for the perfect opportunity to make their own dash. Just as the first sounds of boys crashing into Grievers filled the air pierced with screams and roars of machinery and wood clacking against steel, Chuck ran past.

Evelyn reached out and grabbed his arm. Chuck stumbled backwards, I held him tight. He looked up at the group his eyes so full of pure raw terror. Evelyn's heart broke again. She felt another piece of it crumble to dust.

"Chuck, you’re with us!"  Thomas yelled over the wild clashing if battle.

Chuck looked over his shoulder to the fight of boys and monsters.

"But …" He trailed off.

Evelyn knew he wanted to be in there, fighting for his own freedom, and wanted to prove he was just as tough and brave as everyone else.

"We need your help in the Griever tunnel, I need you to keep the key safe." Thomas pulled it out and gave it to him, "I'll keep the girls safe, you keep the key safe, and we get out!"

Chuck nodded quickly. Evelyn looked greatfully at Thomas. He nodded, his face set and grim. Evelyn reached out and took hold of Chuck's hand.

"Good. Stick close to the girls." Thomas instructed sternly. "Once we're through, that key will activate and theoretically a door will open."

"We stay close, we stick together... we get through this. We get out now!" Evelyn added.

She knew the time for fear and crying was over. Stealing herself in a deep inhale, Thomas started forwards, pulling the girls and Chuck behind him.

They ran, heads down and hands clamped around each other. Evelyn could hear the boys around her; the screams of the Grievers mixed together with the screams of the boys. Evelyn wished she could just clamp her eyes closed and throw her hands over her ears. The screams of pain and fear were enough to make her want to curl in the fetal position. Boys were doing their best to push the monsters away from the middle, trying to make a clear path.

Thomas had to duck and veer sharply to the left pulling the group with him. Evelyn felt Chuck's sweaty hand slipping. Tightening her grin she yanked him closer and pushed him in front of her.

"Go Chuck!" She screamed. They were almost at the Cliff. She saw a Griever tail flu out towards them, she tried to pull Chuck down, he was still clipped with part of it and he fell forwards, the key fell from his hands. He scrambled after it as Evenly scrambled after him. Chuck dove as the key was kicked by a Glader.

"No!" He screamed.

He managed to grab it, as it flew over the edge. Evelyn grabbed his backpack and hauled him back up. Thomas and Teresa appeared and pulled them up.

"Teresa go!" Thomas ordered.

Without hesitation she kept off the edge and disappeared. It would have been kind of cool if they weren't being mangled by monsters.

"Chuck! Go!"

With the help of Thomas, Chuck jumped off the edge and winked out of existence. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a Griever coming towards them.

"Tommy! Go! Look out!" Evelyn screamed.

She shoved Thomas in the back, he only just managed to leap off, avoiding the Griever tail. It came around and smacked Evelyn in the side of the head. She went flying, hitting the ground hard, her head smacking the stone ground. The momentum made her roll a few times, rolling through a pool of someone else's warm sticky blood and came to a stop by slamming into the wall. Trying to blink away the blackness and spots she tried to get to her hands and knees at least. The ground kept moving, and there seemed to be two of everything.

A loud animal scream shock the ground, she felt the ground shak as the sharp spiked metal legs slammed into the ground. It took it's time slowly creeping towards her. The sounds of screaming and crying filled Evelyn's ears, her vision was fuzzy and spotty, but she could smell the metallic wet of blood mixing with the harsh motor oil.

The Griever over top of her screamed. The tail whipped above its body, the claw opening wide and came down towards her. Only to be stopped by someone jumping in the way. A long machete knife in one half and a long spear wrapped in goop filled barbwire.

A wild savage roar was yelled back at the Griever. Sonny had blocked the tail with his machete and was stabbing at its body with the spear. Evelyn tried to scramble to her feet, she needed to help. But nothing was working. Even her vision was coming and going. Her hearing was thick, the screaming of the boys had faded.

Someone else appeard on her vision. She couldn't make out details, but they were yelling at her and turning to yell at Sonny who was now trying to avoid a saw blade that appeared from the Grievers back. Her mind registered,

"Get her out of here!"

The person in front of her grabbed her shoulders and pulled her up. Her legs felt like jelly and the ground wouldn't stop moving. If the person wasn't holding her she would have sunk back to the ground. Her head was rolling, and her stomach was twisting.

There was a sickening wet shink noise and a blood curdling scream. Evelyn's blood turned to ice in her veins.

"Nooooo!" The scream ripped from her throat. She ripped herself from the person holding her. Spinning back around and flinging herself onto the ground. Sonny had fallen to the ground, a wide gash in his abdomen. He was already covered in blood.

"NOOOOO!" She screamed again, "ENOUGH!"

Without thinking of anything but Sonny's life she slammed her hands into his blood soaked torso and screamed. Her body felt like it was on fire. Every nerve ending was white hot. She felt like lightning had just struck her. With another anguished scream, she forced it all into Sonny.

"ENOUGH BLOOD!"

She felt the bleeding slow down and his organs mending.

"NO...MORE..!" She screamed again, the hot pain in her body just made her even angrier, with another scream that ripped her vocal cords, a blast of hot glowing light lit the dark bloody hall, and Sonny's back arched off the ground and his eyes shot open and sat straight up with a gasp of life in his lungs.

Evelyn collapsed, her head filled with a clouded haze. Every muscle was on fire and a deep burning ache in her body. She could do anything else, nothing was working, she felt her self being picked up, but her vision was dark and her hearing was coming and going.

She did register the heartbreaking scream. The deep voice above her rumbled something, but she couldn't pick out words. Her body was transfered to someone else and they sunk to the ground, holding her to their chest. Her shoulda shook, making her head roll and a moan to escape.

She felt something warm and gentle press against her lips. Evelyn felt life flood back into her. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough. Her eyes slowly fluttered open. They were unfocused and confused, but they were open.

Her eyes fluttered open and the first thing she saw was chocolate brown eyes swimming with tears.

"Oh thank heavens!" He cried. Newt placed his forehead on hers and just held her for a second. Her body was too exhausted and sore to do anything, not even to lift an arm to hug him back.

"Evelyn? Are you alright?" He whispered.

Her mind had to take a second to understand what he said.

"No.." she whimpered.

"The Grievers stopped! Just shut down. Tommy and Teresa did it. We can leave now! Can you stand?"

Newt carefully got to his feet while still taking most of Evelyn's weight. Someone came up on her other side. And took her arm and wrapped their around her back. And together the boys helped get her to the Cliff.

Most of the Gladers had jumped through the hole.

"Go Nick, I'll get her through if you can catch her."

Nick stepped up to the edge and jumped. Somehow Newt managed to help Evelyn jump and get through the hole despite her vision coming and going.

Her fuzzy vision took some getting used to, the tunnel was dark, coated with slim and smelt like rusty metal and burning motor oil. It made Evelyn's already sick stomach twist. She pulled away from Nick, stumbled to the wall and leaning on it she threw up.

She knew without a doubt she had a horrible concussion. She jumped when she felt a hand on her back.

"Hey, Love it's just me. It's just me." Newt said gently. He tried to smooth some sweaty hair or out her face but she winced, the side of her head was coated in sticky blood.

Taking a few steadying breaths she straightened up, leaning very heavily on Newt. She tried walking but her legs wouldn't cooperate, her knees buckled, Newt caught her before she hit the ground. Taking her weight again, her head resting on his chest, she forced her fuzzy vision to focus on the guys around the dark room.

Every last one of the Gladers who'd fought was covered in Griever sludge and human blood; their clothes ripped to shreds. Sweat and grime and blood coating their grim haunted faces, arms and body.

"Half of us," Newt said, his voice weak, "Dead."

He was quiet, but it echoed around the room. Evelyn's eyes were jumping from face to face. Sonny. Nick. Thomas. Minho. Teresa. Clint. Chuck. Frypan. Winston. She did another sweep.

"Where's...where's Jeff?" She whispered.

No one said a word then. No one said a word for a very long time.

"Hey saved my life. Pushed me outta the shuck way, just before they shut off. It but him."

"I was bit and still lived! Where is he? I can save him!" She wailed. She pushed away from Newt only to have her head swim and the ground teetered, she hit the ground hard with a sob. Newt was beside her in a second, scooping her up into his chest, holding her and rocking gently as she sobbed. Another piece of her gentle heart broke off and crumbled to dust.

"You know what?" Minho said, standing up a little taller. "Half might've died, but half of us shucking lived. We've gotta get out of here."

With that, he took the lead and walked with purpose down the hall towards the light. The rest just followed without a word, shoulders slumped and heads down. This wasn't the grand escape they had hoped for. This was bloody violent and unnecessary.

Teresa had come over and helped get Evelyn up onto unsteady feet. Newt and Teresa slowly followed the crowd of boys down the hall.

At the end of the hall was a glowing red number four. A red beam of light flashed and then scanned up and down a few times then just shut off with a loud beep. The key, that Chuck still clutched in his hands beeped, turned green and shut off.

Everyone looked around confused. A robotical female voice came from somewhere, "pass code required."

Frowning everyone looked around.

"There. On the wall." Thomas said walking over. There on the flat computer screen has the letters W I C K E D and under it had eight spaces for some kind of code.

"Eight spaces...what kind of code does it want?" Thomas frowned, looking around.

"Maze pattern..." Evelyn mumbled.

"What love?"

She took a breath, picked her throbbing head up and mumbled louder, "8 spaces...maze pattern. Minho...what's the sequence of the maze?"

Minho looked like a bucket of I e water was dumped on him.

"71526483 got it?"

"Yeah," Thomas said punching the numbers in.

The light on the screen flashed and then shut off. There was silence for a second and then a loud rumbling stone on stone grinding filled the small hall. The wall in front of them slid open, like the maze doors.

The Gladers all steped through and into another hall. This one was brighter, pipes and wires, made of cement instead of stone. A few yellow arrows painted on the ground and the florescent lights flickered.

The flickering lights made Evelyn's already pounding head hurt more, it made her eyes hurt. Placing her head on Newt's shoulder, she closed her eyes, and took her arm back from Teresa and held her head with a whimper.

Minho and Thomas turned right and followed the yellow arrows down the hall. Coming to a door with a green neon EXIT sign.

"Seriously?" Frypan raised an eyebrow.

Hesitantly Thomas reached out and grabbed the handle. He looked back at everyone. Teresa had reached for Minho's hand. Chuck was sticking close to Evelyn, even though she was in no physical shape to hold him or comfort him, she did reach for his hand and held it right.

Nick and Newt nodded, and Thomas pushed the door open.
