Chapter 6: The Glade

Evelyn sat down at a picnic table with her food only to be joined a few minutes later by a group of guys. Nick had a sleepy blurry eyed look, like he just rolled out of bed, his hair a mess still from sleeping. Alby looked grouchy and ready to bit anyone's head off if they talked to him, Gall joined the table too, he just nodded in greeting and dug into breakfast. Newt and Minho also joined the table, still bickering like a married couple.

"Minho, did you upset your wife?" Evelyn asked, sipping her coffee.

"Yeah, he must be PMSing!" He threw his hands into the air dramatically and sighed. He turned to Newt beside him and shoved his shoulder. "Come on Mama Newt, be nice to me, I'm just trying to help you, be a good wing man!"

"Would you just buggen' drop it?" Newt rolled his eyes.

A huge guy with long hair pulled back into a bun clumped his way over, and stood awkwardly for a moment at the end of the table.

"Ahh, Sonny! Come sit, my man!" Nick grinned at the guy, and swept his hand at the table.

With a nod he slid onto the bench beside Evelyn, he was so huge it dwarfed her. She looked like a child sitting next to him.

"Still think you're average height? Look how teeny tiny our Pixy is!" Minho grinned at the girl who rolled her eyes.

"So we just need Frypan and we have the leaders..well the ones who stepped up at least." Nick said looking around the table.

"What's Gally's job?" Minho asked.

"What's your bloody job?" Newt asked.

"How about yours, ya British twat!" Minho retorted.

"Oh would you two just slim it!" Alby growled.

"Gally, did you want to start on expanding the healers hut? Or just give Evy her own place to sleep beside the hut, would probably be easiest. Jack can sleep with the rest of the guys if he's' not needed." Nick said.

"Good that." Evelyn said quietly, smiling at Nick.

"All right. I can grab a few guys and get started, might as well do something." Gally nodded, and went back to his breakfast.

"Hey guys, can I join?"

Frypan stood at the end of the table, everyone nodded and he slid onto the bench.

"So? What's everyone talking about? Oh Eve, I found a cast iron pot you can use!" Fry said with a big smile.

"Perfect, thank you!"

"Just talking about what to do today." Alby grumbled, eyeing his empty coffee mug like it insulted him.

"Someone is gonna have to deal with those animals in the barn...I heard some chickens, we could have eggs...same with meat." Fry said, pointing to the big red barn in the corner. Nick turned to look, and then nodded. He produced a piece of paper and pencil from his pants pocket and wrote something down.

"Oh! There was also a huge box on the counter when I exploded the kitchen, it was full of all kinds of different seed packets." Fry went on.

"I can do that, well, I can start. Might need some bloody help though." Newt said nodding, rubbing his bottom lip with his thumb.

"I can help." Evelyn volunteered.

"Good that!" Newt grinned at her from across the table.

"Great! We have a plan-"

Nick never finished his sentence. The ground started to shake and tremble.

"The fuck is going on?" Minho yelled.

"Dude! Watch your bloody language!" Newt yelled back.

Fear and panic shot through Evelyn's body. What was going on? Why was the ground shaking like an earthquake? Everyone at the table scrambled up and away from it. Hephaestus didn't like the sudden wild movement and dug his claws into her shoulder and jumped off her shoulder. She was too busy panicking about the ground shaking she didn't notice his claws weren't as sharp as they were yesterday.

She twisted around, trying to figure out what was happening, she was on her third rotation when an ear splitting noise echoed through the place, bouncing off the stone walls. It was like rusty metal on metal, and a loud grinding stone dragging across a hard surface.

"Wholly fuck, dude the walls!" Minho yelled over the noise, pointing.

"Minho! Language!"

"Seriously? You want to worry about what words come outta my mouth when those huge F-"

"-SHHH-"

"-ucking walls are moving?"

"Shuck?"

"No! I said fucking!" Minho yelled the curse just to piss off Newt.

"You said shuck." Nick corrected, with a small smile of amusement.

The loud grinding noise had stopped, along with the shaking of the ground. It had woken up the rest of the boys. Everyone was on their feet, some twisted around trying to comprehend what was going on, others were pointing to the openings and slowly hesitantly approaching the walls. Jack and George came from the Med Hut with wild open eyes.

"Whatever dude. Those walls just opened!" Minho rolled his eyes pointing at the walls. The group all followed him over to the closest opening.

All the guys and Evelyn stood in a clump in front of the opening. Evelyn had an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. The opening led out into a stone corridor. It was cool and dark. There was an odd mist or fog hanging around the hall.

"Ya think it's a way out?" Minho asked, a spark of hope in his eyes.

"Doesn't look inviting." Evelyn said quietly, and shivered. She wrapped her arms around herself.

"No, no it doesn't." Newt agreed, but he was gazing at the corridor like it held answers to all his questions and he crept even closer.

"Well? What are we waiting for? Let's go explore!" Minho grinned at them all.

While everyone stepped forwards, Evelyn stepped back. Not that she was a coward, but there was something about the place that didn't sit right with her. They slowly inched forwards.

"You coming Evy?" Nick asked.

When she shivered, he turned to fully look at her, "Come on, I'll be beside ya the whole time!"

He held his hand out for her. She hesitated, but took his hand and he gently squeezed it, giving her some encouragement. They slowly made their way down the stone hall. It was eerily quiet and made Evelyn feel like she was trapped. The group came to an intersection. Each direction looked the same, stone halls, some ivy and moss growing on the dark damp walls. It looked like the walls or stone were old and ancient, like they had stood for ages. The same weird foggy mist hung in the air. Evelyn shivered again. They took the hall on the right and followed the hall until they came to another fork, left right or continue straight.

"It looks like a Maze" Minho said.

"Labrynth." Evelyn said at the same time.

"Smart little Pixy." Minho grinned at her over his shoulder.

"So...that that Homestead grassy area is in the middle of a big bloody maze? The bloody hell is going on?" Newt asked, rubbing his forehead.

"Shuck if I know Dude." Minho sassed, and made a big emphasis on the word shuck.

"Glade." Evelyn said quietly.

Nick looked at her raising an eyebrow.

"The Glade...it's an opening in a forest, or valley, grassy opening.." She shrugged.

"Words of wisdom!" He chuckled, squeezing her hand.

Evelyn gave him a small tight lipped smile. She was still feeling uncomfortable in the stonewalls. She glanced around, she noticed a few others looked uncomfortable and George looked pale and sweaty.

"Nick?" She whispered.

He glanced at her and hummed.

"I think I need to take George back, he's not doing so good, and some others look uncomfortable, including me" She said quietly. He glanced over his shoulder, and then frowned.

"You're right." He nodded, then turned back around, "Hey Minho! Newt!" He called. The boys turned and jogged over.

"'Sup Boss?" Minho asked.

"Evy is gonna take George back to the Med hut, Alby and I will go with and take those uncomfortable, you two good to lead the exploration? Don't stay out long, I don't know what's actually going on in here, or why the walls suddenly moved."

"Aye aye Boss." Minho saluted Nick, while Newt nodded. His eyes slid to Evelyn, who stood nervously, glancing around.

"Hey, you okay?" He asked her quietly.

"Just...don't like being in here." She wrapped her arms around herself.

He laid a hand on her shoulder, "That's okay, you're gonna go back, sorry I won't be able to help ya plant that garden."

"It's okay, if you like cold dark closed in places, this is for you, and I'll leave you to do your thing." She forced a smile.

He chuckled. "Well it's not ideal, but if I can find a way out?"

"All right. Just be safe while you run around inside here."

"I'll see ya later Eve." He said quietly, his big brown eyes looking into hers. He squeezed her shoulder gently and turned to follow Minho and a group of guys who volunteered to stay. She could feel that battle raging inside his soul again when he left his hand on her shoulder. She frowned as she watched the group round a corner.

"Come on Evy." Nick called. He had one of George's arms around his shoulder. It didn't take them long to get back.

"Ahhh the Glade." Nick took a big deep breath.

Evelyn agreed. She felt better now that she was out of those halls. There was something about those stone walls. She knew deep down they would bring nothing but trouble, but what kind of trouble, she had no idea.

The rest of the day was quiet, about a quarter of the guys had decided to stay out in the Maze. Evelyn kept busy with George, making sure he was doing okay, he had overexerted himself. She puttered around wrapping bundles of herbs and prepping some other pasts and teas she had feeling they would need. A few guys showed up looking for something to wrap up cuts and such with.

Around mid afternoon a loud waling siren went off, making everyone jump. A few guys suddenly burst into tears. Everyone's nerves felt shot and fried. The guys who were in the Glade all met in front of the Homestead, looking around, the siren waled for a full minute and then it was silent. Then came the unmistakable sound of a metal chain being wound. Evelyn frowned.

"It's coming from that metal area over there." She said pointing.

Nick and Alby glanced at each other and made there over, Evelyn, Jack and Sonny following. As they got closer they could also hear crying.

"What the hell?" Nick muttered frowning, he was staring down at the metal flaps. He pushed his glasses up, he looked up at the crowd that followed.

"Your guess is as good as mine." Alby shrugged.

The metal sound came to a clanging stop. The crying and screaming continued. Nick and Sonny pulled the metal doors apart, revealing a metal mesh cage-like box. With mouths wide open and eyes wide they pulled the metal cage open. Evelyn crept forwards and looked down. Inside the cage was a boy, he was huddled in the corner, tears and snot running down his face. He looked terrified. Nick glanced at Evelyn, like he was looking for her to tell him what to do. She shrugged. He slowly climbed down into the cage.

"Hey kid." He said gently, crouching down in front of him.

"What's going on? I can't remember anything! Why can't I remember?" He cried. His chest was rising faster than his breath, he was going to pass out if he didn't stop hyperventilating.

"It's gonna be okay. None of us knew anything...none of us here can remember anything. Come on, wanna get out of this...box?"

The kid nodded and slowly stood up. Gally and Sonny helped him up out of the box. The kid turned in a circle, taking in his new surroundings. He looked really pale.

"There's a bunch of boxes and crates in there too." Nick was saying to Alby. The new kid was spinning around hyperventilating.

"Nick, he's gonna pass out!" Evelyn cried, and sure enough he dropped. His eyes rolled into his head and he hit the ground in a heap.

Alby and Nick sighed.

"Sonny? Jack? Can you help get him to the MedHut?" Nick asked, "Evy? Anything you can do for him?"

She nodded and followed behind the guys. Alby, Nick and Gally started to unload the crates.

There was a knock on the open Medhut door. Evelyn was sitting at the table working, she looked up, and her face broke into a smile.

"You made it back."

"Sure did." Newt grinned, but his smile slid off and he pointed to the kid laying on the bed.

"Who the bloody hell is that?" He asked.

"No idea." And she went on to describe the afternoon in the glade, Newt had grabbed a stool and sat down, listening to her describe the afternoon.

He ran a hand through his hair, his happy smile when he first got to the door was gone, his frown deepening the longer she talked about the afternoon.

"Well bloody hell." He muttered.

She hummed in agreement.

"Also, that's the most you've said in a full conversation."

He lifted the corner of his mouth, into a small grin. She could see he was trying to cover up whatever was truly there. She lowered her head, looking back at the journal she was working on.

"I do talk..." She mumbled, she could feel the heat rising in her cheeks.

"I know ya do." He shrugged.

"So, how was the maze?" She mumbled, changing subjects.

Newt exhaled and she could see him deflate. Evelyn saw the storm working its way back up to the surface. It was like he was curling in on himself. She could feel it, even his body language shifted to a less open position. She looked up, and he had a vacant look in his eyes. He didn't really finish a sentence, just saying it was big, lots of turns, looked the same, they will probably go back tomorrow.

This became their routine. Newt would leave with Minho and George and a few other guys into the Maze, run and explore for the day, trying to find a way out, and make it back before the doors closed, he would shower and then find Evelyn in her hut usually at her table working.

Evelyn would stay in the Glade, and help the injured and sick with the help of Jack, she slowly taught him the holistic methods, and he showed her the more medical science side, they made a good team. The kid who showed up on the third day was Winston. They had a few more kids show up, all through the box. Sometimes with boxes of supplies, sometimes they showed up alone, nothing was scheduled, it seemed kind of random.

Evelyn had been keeping track, it had been four months so far. Winston had taken over the barn, which they officially dubbed The Blood-house, because that's where they would butcher the animals, and most of the guys didn't want to set foot in there. Another kid named Zart showed up and took over the gardening, he was kind of slow and sleepy. He had a bit of a dirty mind, and the first time Evelyn helped plant, she explained about making a track, for the seeds to go into, he suggested she was a hoe. While he sniggered stupidly to himself he called her a track hoe, because she was using a hoe to make the track in the dirt. She dropped the gardening tool and left.

When Newt got back from the Maze, and he asked about her day she gave a brief overview about the situation, he got up before she finished talking and stormed out the MedHut door. She jumped up and followed at his heels. His long legs made it hard for her to keep up.

"NICK!" He bellowed.

The boy turned, pushing his glasses back up.

"What's up Newt, why do you look like you're about to commit murder?" Nick asked with a frown. "Evy? What's going on?"

She just shrugged.

"Did you know Zart called Lee a hoe?"

"Uh. No." He clenched his jaw, and his eyes darkened, "Explain. Right now."

She sighed and ran a hand through her golden hair, she explained what happened.

"Well simple solution." Nick said with a shrug, he turned towards the gardens, "Follow me." He marched over, Newt followed still growling and Evelyn sighed and followed.

"ZART!" Nick barked. The big kid turned and blinked his sleepy eyes.

"Yeah Boss?"

"We are revoking your name as Gardener. From now on, YOU and everyone who works here will be called Track Hoes."

"What?" Zart sputtered, his eyes going big, "That's not cool man! It was a joke!"

"We don't sexually harass the only girl in this Glad, jokes like that directed to her are unacceptable. End of discussion. You call her a Track Hoe, we can call you a Track Hoe."

With that he spun away from the guy and left. Newt continued to growl and glare at him.

"Fine. I'm sorry Evelyn."

Newt nodded and turned, he placed a hand on her back and directed her away from the gardens.

"Breath Newt." She said quietly.

And she could see him deflate slightly. He gently guided her back to the MedHut, and they took their vacated seats. He took a deep breath and looked back at her.

"Thank you, Newt. That was really sweet." She said softly, always shyly. She could feel the heat in her cheeks, and she was too nervous now to make eye contact with him.

"It wasn't bloody appropriate, and if he got away with it, others would try." He growled.

She could still sense his anger, out of the corner of her eye he ran a hand through his hair. It was getting longer and shaggier. He placed both hands on his knees, and she nervously reached out, and placed a hand over his.

"Thank you." She smiled. He turned his hand so he could squeeze her dainty one in his large one. She could see and sense his turmoil and sent a little surge of her healing power into his hand. She visibly saw his relax, and the forced smile became a relaxed gentle one again.

"Now, how was the rest of your afternoon?" He asked. He didn't let go of her hand.
