Chapter 43: Numbness

It was a long night. Alby was withering and screaming beside Evelyn. Ben was screaming from the other room. The girl lay still unconscious in the other room. After waking up again from someone screaming, she slowly and carefully sat up. She was shocked to see someone in the chair beside her bed. Once she managed to sit at the edge of the bed she was still. Having to breathe through the pain.

Holding her bandage side she gently shook the boy's knee. He sat bolt up right, ready to fight, his chest heaving and eyes wide.

"Hey, just breathe. It's just me!"

"What the shuck ya doing?" He yawned.

"Well I can't sleep... between Alby and Ben's screaming..I'm going to my own room. Thought you'd want to go to sleep in your bed, and not a chair."

Minho gave her a skeptical look.

"I'm going to my own bed." She said stubbornly, but then everything left her, "I'll have a better sleep with no one around." She tried to keep the hurt out of her voice.

She saw Minho's eyes ash in anger. He ran a hand through his hair, and frowned at her. She looked terrible.

"I don't know what's going on with him. I'm so sorry Evy. I really am. You don't deserve any of that klunk. I talked to Thomas...when we were on our way back to the Glade..."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"He claims, he had no idea, and wouldn't have done anything had he known about you. He does seem like a decent shank. I mean after I turned tail and ran..he saved Alby and kept you safe. And he knows you don't like him, and he gets it."

Evelyn was quiet, listening.

"I ain't making excuses for him stirring up trouble...but there's somethin' about him..." Minho shrugged, "he questions everything."

"Yeah, I know. Trust me." She sighed.

"But...maybe we need that. Someone who questions things. Get us thinking of different ways of doin' things. I mean...with his help we got a few of those Grievers off the cliff."

Evelyn thought about it. Maybe Minho was right. But her heart and feelings were still hurting it would take a bit more than Minho's words- though she put a lot of weight in his words and his opinions.

"Maybe." Was all she said.

"It's that other shank that's the problem. I don't know what to tell ya, Eve. But...if he doesn't give his head a shake and get it together soon, he's gonna lose you."

She gave him a small sad smile.

"I know your hurtin', I can see it. But if he's gonna act like a slint head, best friend or not I'm going to lay him flat and steal you."

She snorted.

"Hey, I can take that shank!"

"I don't doubt it Min." She smiled and patted his knee. He smirked at her, crossing his arms.

"But seriously, Pixy, you deserve better."

She looked down at her lap and nodded.

"I know Sonny already had some words with him. And Nick. I haven't seen Nick get that angry, sorry we woke you, that was Nick trying to swing at him. Also apparently Chuck also had a few things to say."

She let the corner of her lip twitch, imagine Chuck sticking up for her.

"Come on, Pixy. You need to sleep." He yawned and got stiffly to his feet.

"I'm going to shower first. And then back to sleep."

He held a hand out, and she slowly got to feet. And helped her out the door and towards the showers.

"Shuck! Everything hurts!" She whinned.

"Ya know...you'd make a good Runner, Pixy."

She just groaned as her muscles protested. Minho chuckled.

"You get used to it. Though...I've never been a human chew toy." He smirked.

"10 out of 10 would not recommend."

He laughed. And it made Evelyn chuckle. He opened the door and waved her inside. She was very happy to shower the dirt, grime, blood and sweat away. There were only 4 punctures that had stitches. And only a few. She was thankful. It was her sore exhausted body. She washed everything away. The hot water felt great in her body. After she was done, she pulled on one of Newt's hoodies and her pj bottoms.

She jumped when she opened the door Nd Minho was still waiting her.

"You should be sleeping." She scolded.

"You need help. Also, you should be sleeping, I wasn't a chew toy."

"I don't sleep much anymore." She admitted quietly.

Minho held an arm out and she took it for some support. He raised an eyebrow, waiting there to continue. She exained about her nightmares and weird dreams.

"So...are they memories?" He asked.

"I have no idea. They seem to real to be dreams ir nightmares but they also seem to...creepy and unrealistic the real!"

"Uhh were locked in a shucken maze with no memories, with moving stone walls, blood thirsty death monsters who poison us, and you have magic glowing hands that can heal people." Minho pointed out dryly.

"All right points taken." She was quiet for a moment. "So you think they're real?"

"I mean ... I wouldn't rule it out." He shrugged.

He held the door open for her. She shuffled to her bed, as she expected, her hut was empty. And her tears threatened to fall again.

"So...those two I keep having...the one with me stuck in a stone tower and the one of me being strapped down..and then forcefully... possibly sterilizing me..."

He was quiet for a bit, he sunk down beside her.

"Well...uh...have you had to uh deal with...that issue here?" He asked, rubbing the back of his neck.

She shook her head.

"No. I thought it was weird at first. But I guess...I don't know, there's nothing I can do about it! I mean it's kinda nice not having to deal with a period in a maze full of guys, but ..if we find a way out...seems like I won't be able to have a family!"

Tears slid down her face. Again.

"Oh Evy, I'm so sorry." His own voice was thick with emotion. He pulled her into a hug. She sobbed into his shoulder. He held her and let her cry. She had held him many many times while he panicked. He took his turn to hold her while she sobbed.

Her heart shattered into so many pieces. It felt like her soul was shriveling into nothing. Her tender heart was becoming hard and callased. Her gentle soft spoken personality was becoming bitter and bleak. Especially after the last few days. She felt empty and numb. Minho held her tight, laying his head on top of hers. She cried herself out.

"You need to sleep Pixy." He said quietly.

"You too, Soilder."

"Then I'll leave you to sleep."

Minho held her face in his hands, and kissed her forehead. He got up and helped her into bed and then left. She was asleep within minutes.

Her nightmares didn't let her sleep long.

A Griever was chasing her through the stone halls. It chased her right into the circular stone dungeon room with a spiral staircase up to a roof with a garden surround by more stone walls. The Griever advanced on her, nashing its wild knife like teeth. But it was laughing at her. Evelyn threw her hands over her ears not wanting to listen.

"You know I never loved you, you witch!"

The Griever laughed, as she sunk to her knees.

"Your a freak. You can't save anyone, and your own boyfriend of a year, ditched you an hour after the hot new Greenie showed up. You unlovable witch!"

"You're an unlovable witch!"

It whispered over and over until Evelyn was screaming.

Evelyn sat up screaming and panting. She was alone in her hut, tangled in her blanket. Crying from the physical pain and the emotional pain, she curled up and cried until she had nothing left. She watched blankly as the darkness lightened. Dragging herself out of bed she changed into leggings, throwing her hair into a messy bun she very slowly and gingerly made her way to breakfast.

There were only a few people milling about. But they all stopped what they were doing, stopped mid sentence and watched her walk passed. Her once sparkling green eyes were now dull, blank and empty. She grabbed a coffee in autopilot and sat down at an empty table. Holding the warm mug between her cold hands she sat and stared at a spot on the table. She had no idea how long she sat alone with her back to the dinning area.

A plate of hot breakfast was placed in front of her.

"Ya need ta eat."

She blinked a few times focussing on the boy in front of her. He sat down on the other side of the table. He looked terrible, like he lost 10 pounds in 1 day. His hair was dishevelled and his clothes looked slept in, bags under his eyes, but it was his eyes that held her.

Newt's big brown eyes looked so broken and lost. So sad and guilty. He wouldn't hold her eye contact for long, flicking up at her and down to his plate. He opened his mouth slightly only for it to close and he looked away. She watched as he tried again, but closed his mouth and swallowed hard. She could see his eyes become glassy. But she felt nothing but numb pain. Her heart was so tired of feeling, it was now numb.

"Why'd ya do it?"

She just blinked.

"Why'd ya run into the maze? Why Evelyn?" His voice was loud and full of anger. She sat silent watching Newt struggle with his anger.

"Does it matter to you?" She finally asked. Her voice was dull and listless.

"Yes! It bloody does matter!"

"What do you want to hear Newt?" She asked.

"The buggen' truth!"

"Did you ask Thomas the same question?"

Newt opened his mouth to relaiate, but clamped his jaw shut and shook his head.

"I'm askin' you why you bloody ran out there when the doors were closing!" He yelled.

She sat silent still, having no energy to fight.

"I told you. I told the Greenie. I told Minho. I've told every Glader here. If someone is hurt and needs my help I will help."

"So it's not 'cause of anythin' else?"

She raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to explain.

"Not 'cause you were hurt and wanted to get back at me?"

She had to take a full minute to process what he said. She frowned and pulled her eyebrows in together.

"Because you disregard my feelings and me as a person, you thought by me going in to help Alby and Minho...I was trying to...get back at you...?" She asked slowly trying to figure out what he meant. "The kind of shucked up logic is that?"

Newt growled and narrowed his eyes.

"I'm not petty. I'm not a you hurt me I hurt you. You should know that better than anyone. Don't be so egotistical. You treat me like garbage and we're over. I'm not putting my time or effort into it anymore."

"So your night time stroll with Minho? That wasn't a petty shot back?"

Evelyn sighed, exhausted.

"Grow up Newt. Minho stayed by my bed all day and night. Slept in the chair, even though he also spent the night in the maze being chased by Grievers. In the wood chair which should have been occupied by you. When I woke up again from Ben and Alby's screams he helped me over to the shower so I could wash my dried blood sweat, tears, grim and guts off. He helped me walk back to my empty room. And left."

Pausing to swipe at yet more tears she continued.

"Why are you watching me so closely? Trying to find something to justify your actions and behavior? Trying to find something to make you feel better?"

He looked away.

"It's him or me. You're time is running out, I'm not waiting forever and I'm not going to let you treat me like this."

She got to her feet with a groan threw clenched teeth and a wince.

"Figure it out fast Newt. You know where to find me."

She turned and left, leaving her untouched food behind. She went to the MedHut. Pushing the door open she was assaulted by the screaming of two boys. She sighed sadly and slowly started to work.

There was a knock. And Minho showed up.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"So umm...I have a question."

"And maybe I have an answer..." Evelyn sunk down into the chair and waited for Minho to ask.

"Well...Thomas was made a runner, but he's gotta do a night in the pit, which is tonight. So, tomorrow morning...I..we- Thomas and I - was... thinking of going to check out that Griever you squished."

"Okay...where's the question?"

"I'm getting to that, hold on Pixy."

He was passing up and down in front of the beds, running a hand through his hair. He had a spark in his eyes. One she hadn't seen in a very long time.

"Well, you said the walls were changing when you were running, ya?"

She nodded.

"They were changing the whole time?"

She watch him pace, thinking back, it was a blur of emotions, fear and adrenaline.

"Umm from where I woke up in the ivy...it wasn't far from the door...so maybe...a few halls weren't moving. But for the most part...all night the walls moved...well the times I was conscious. After I passed out the second time no idea how long the walls moved. Why?"

"Tryna figure out which section you were in. I think it must have been four. You ran in four...that was the section that was supposed to move that night. Last night was 7. Tonight'll be a different section."

"Why's that important?"

"Because! Section four is where the cliff is. And that's the same area we keep seeing Grievers. That's where Ben was stung and where Alby was stung...there is something about four."

"...okay..." Evelyn said slightly confused.

"If you sleep good tonight...want to come with Thomas and I into the maze and dissect that thing?"

Evelyn sat with her mouth open and eyes wide, in shocked silence.

"I'll take your silence as a yes..."

"Uhh...I'm not a runner!" She stammered.

"So?" He shrugged. He stopped pacing and turned to look at her. He crossed his arms, his face was set and serious, he looked at her with such an intensity it made her nervous.

"You got more brains and guts then most of those shucken skint heads out there. You proved that. Again that night. You killed the shuck thing, you should be there to dissect it. Also...all my runners quite. It'll be me, Thomas and...you! If you say yes!"

Before she realized what she was doing, she was nodding.

"Yes. Yes, Minho! I'll come.'

"Great! We might actually find a shucken way outta here after all!" He grinned at her.

She couldn't help it. She grinned back.
