Chapter 34: The Healer

Minho collapsed into a heap, sobbing hysterically. Fear filling her so fast her head was spinning.

"Minho! Shuck! Min? Are you hurt?"

He just continued crying. Newt had finally scrambled out of bed, standing half asleep, blinking at them. Evelyn closed the door and knelt down in front of him. Sobs made his body shake and shiver.

She didn't see any physical immediate injuries so she just pulled him close. She wrapped her arms around the Runner and he laid his head on her shoulder. She rocked gently back and forth, rubbing his back.

Newt was finally functional, and he came to sit down beside his best friend, a frown on his face. The Runner shivered, his large muscular body covered in goosebumps. Newt pulled their blanket off the bed and draped it over his shoulders. They sat holding the Runner while he sobbed and hyperventilated. It was a long time, and his sobbing and crying hadn't stopped or slowed down.

Evelyn closed her eyes, concentrating hard. She hadn't been able to summon her powers since Nick's almost death. Though she did have a wild surge of her power and glowing hands last night. It made for a very interesting first time. Like when Newt kissed her for the first time, power surged and her hands glowed and heated up. It happened last night. Newt wasn't phased at all by it. Evelyn was self conscious about it, withdrawing her hands and held them tight to her chest, she was literally glowing last night. Newt had gently pulled her hands away, kissing her still hot and glowing hands, making her feel safe, accepted and loved.

She felt it flowing through her veins again. With her hand still rubbing Minho's back and the other one cupping the back of his head, his forehead pressed into her shoulder; she harnessed the power and let it flow through her and out of her, into Minho.

She didn't use a lot, but she gave him enough to help steady his breathing and ease the tension in his muscles. His shaking body and heart wrenching sobs slowed down, becoming hiccups and sniffles. His breathing was still shallow and ragged.

"Shhh. Min. You're all right now. We're here. You're safe right now. Shhh." Evelyn soothed.

She glanced at Newt who was looking at them with a frown and wide worried eyes. Newt flicked his eyes to Evelyn who was looking about the same, stared back at Newt completely confused.

They all sat on the ground in silence, Minho still huddled in Evelyn's arms. Minho's sniffling was quieter now. Newt placed a hand on Evelyn's back, and one on Minho's shoulder.

"Imma go make some tea. I'll be right back."

He got up and quietly slipped out the door.

"Min?"

He sniffed.

"Talk to me."

He took a ragged breath and shook his head, gripping her hoodie tighter. She tightened her grip.

"Okay, when you're ready." She said softly.

Newt came back a few minutes later with a tea pot and mugs from the MedHut next door.

"Thanks Love." Evelyn said quietly.

She gently but firmly pushed Minho's shoulders so he was sitting up. The blanket wrapped around his shoulders. Newt handed him some tea. Minho looked terrible, his eyes were wide and haunted. Jumping all over, like he was trying to find a way out.

Evelyn reached out and took hold of his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, sending another zap of her power. Minho closed his eyes and took another breath.

"Minho..?"

"I saw one. It chased me." He said flatly.

"Saw one...? One what?" Evelyn frowned. She looked at Newt, see if he understood. Clearly he did because his eyes went wide and his face went white as a ghost and he sucked in a sharp breath.

"No bloody way!" He whispered, horrified.

Minho just nodded.

"Yeah. I was in section four, passing the Cliff. Had just rounded the corner when I heard it. That horrible moan and whirring...metal on metal."

Newt shivered, and gulped. Evelyn could see the fear rising in his eyes and his eyes went glassy. Newt's jaw clamped, a muscle twitching in his jaw.

"I didn't look back, I ran. It chased, I guess it heard me...or those damn beetle blades told it."

He narrowed his eyes at Hephaestus, who was scuttling along the dresser.

"I took a corner. Trying to catch my shuck breath. And it came around the corner. Newt..." His huge terrified eyes turned to him, "I saw it. I saw it in all its terrifying shucken half monster half robot glory!"

"A Griever!" Evelyn gasped, finally caught up.

She slapped a hand over her mouth. Minho nodded. And looked down at the cup in his hands.

"Yeah. It chased me all the way back. Almost got me a few times."

"Oh shuck, Minho." Evelyn whispered. "That's terrifying."

Reaching out she grasped his hand. Newt sat still as stone, his eyes wide in fear.

"But ..the weird thing was...yeah it shucken chased me...and almost got me, it was like it wasn't fully trying. Like it was shucken playing with me!"

Evelyn sat still as stone, eyes wide in fear.

"It looked like a metal spider, with sharp stabbing legs, a head that could rip ya apart, teeth as long as Winston's knives. A claw tail, the stinger...and all kinds of other plesent ways to die attached to its shucken back. Which is covered in this... Hairy blubber!"

Evelyn felt her stomach twist in disgust. Newt looked even more pale and his breathing was coming up short. They sat in silence, Minho's ragged breathing the only sound. Evelyn knew this place was horrible, this prison...but there were good things that came from it... sometimes trying to survive made you forget the horrors of what was out there. She never went out there, into the halls, she didn't fully understand. But seeing Newt try and take his own life because of the Maze and seeing Minho, big bad strong brave Keeper of the Runners, Minho break down like this...it came back and slapped her hard in the face. They needed out. They need a way home. This was a prison. A horrible death sentence.

"And...that's not all..."

That brought Evelyn out if her dark thoughts. Her head snapped up. Minho was staring blank eyed at the wall. His voice was a horse whisper.

"More buggen' bad news?" Newt whispered, his face looked stricken, all his muscles were tight and coiled, like a tight spring ready to explode.

"There's no way out." Minho said flatly.

Evelyn and Newt sat in silence. They both blinked a few times. Evelyn's brain couldn't process what Minho had said. Her mind had to take a few seconds to catch up.

"What did ya bloody say?" Newt's voice was dangerously low.

"I've run every single inch of that shucken maze, man." Minho said, still staring at the wall. His eyes were vacant and empty. Evelyn saw the scared hopeless boy behind the cocky smirk and loud laugh. He had been holding so much inside, not letting anyone see anything but the sass and smirk. Evelyn shifted and sat up onto her knees. Her tender heart felt like it was being ripped apart; not about the maze, but how it was slowly destroying the people she held dear. Minho's bright spark was dying and all because of those stupid stone walls. She reached out and pulled the broken huddled boy into her arms again.

"There's no way out! A year and a half...I can tell ya when and where the walls move, I can tell you exactly how to get from anywhere in the maze back to the Glade. I can tell ya the shucken order of which sections move each night. But no exits. I know exactly where all those plaques are and which walls have ivy attached to the walls, but no doors or cracks big enough for an exit, no flashing exit sign. Nothing! There's no way out."

His body shuddered under her arms. And he sniffed again.

"I can't find a way out. Everyone is expecting me to find a way. But I can't! I can't do it! Why am I the Keeper? I'm a useless excuse of a Keeper, can't even do my shucken job!"

"Minho! Enough! That's enough of that kind of talk!"

He sat up abruptly and snarled at her, his eyes flashed dangerously.

"You don't get it Evelyn! You've never been out there! You don't know the shucken pressure! You don't get how hard it is to keep going every day, maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day, but its the same shucken thing every shucken day!"

Evelyn knew he was hurting, she knew he lashed out when he was angry and hurting. But it still hurt. She involuntarily flinched at his loud voice, he had got to his feet and was yelling down at her. Minho froze, his eyes wide, the blood drained from his face, and he stumbled back into the wall, his chest rising and falling, he slid down the wall. His knees to his chest.

"I wasn't... no..I wasn't going..." He stuttered, tears filled his eyes.

Evelyn's heart broke more. She crawled over and pulled him back into a hug.

"I know Min. I know. It was just loud. I know you. You would never ever do anything like that! It's okay. Shhhh. I'm sorry I made you think that." She soothed, rubbing his back.

"There's no way out. Were stuck here." He whispered.

"I don't believe that." Evelyn said firmly.

Newt hadn't moved. He was sitting frozen, like he had stopped working, stopped functioning. But at her words he turned his head, his big brown eyes latched onto her. Minho sat up, also looking at her with big desperate eyes.

"I don't believe it." She repeated. "Now you listen here! Both of you!" She turned to look at Newt. Her kindness was replaced by a firm steeliness, her green eyes hardened, into the eyes that have seen too much.

"You're right, I don't know the pressures of going into the halls. But I know the pressures of this shucked up place! How many lives have I saved? But how many lives have I failed to save? Do you know what it's like to have everyone relying on you to keep them alive? Are you responsible for lives Minho? How many kids have you held while they died in your arms, covered in their blood? How many eyes have you watched the spark of life leave?"

"Evelyn that's not-"

"I'm not done Minho. Slim it and listen." she snapped, her hard haunted eyes flashed in his direction. "Newt! You too! Listen up!"

"I know pressure. All right? I get it. I've given my all to you guys, I haven't almost died over and over for you to give up! There is an exit. There is a way out. We just haven't found it. There is obviously something we're missing. I will continue to give my everything, because I believe in you and the Runners. I believe in you, Minho. Those shucken creators wouldn't throw us in here without a way out. I'm positive.  Their they will shut it down and take us out like they put us here, or we find out own shucken way out! The Minho I know wouldn't give up. He's shucken determined, and willing to do anything, and he's stubborn! Shuck is he stubborn!"

Both boys were watching her, a mix of emotions on their faces, but they were listening.

"We can't give up, that's what They want! Why make it so hard? They want to see us give up, but I for one wont! Even if I have to go out there myself, I'm not going to give up; sheer will power and stubbornness and hope. I have hope. Hope in the Keeper of the Runners, the Runners, the leaders, the rest of the boys. I have hope that we will get out! I have hope in us, as a group and a family. We WILL get out. There IS a way home."

"Shuck it Pixy.." Minho muttered.

"Have your doubt for a second. Cry, scream, be mad, be angry, be sad. You're human with emotions. You're aloud to have them. It's okay to not be okay. Alby says, if you ain't scared, you ain't human. Both of you, you aren't aloud to give up! Pick your self up, dust your self off and get back out there, because I believe in you! You can't give up. Because I won't let you!"

Her chest was heaving, her face was flushed, but the hard steel in her face and eyes was still there, daring them to say something else.

"Well...that was some tough love." Minho muttered.

"Shuck it Lee, where did that come from?" Newt whispered, his eyes  briming with tears.

"Inside the heart full of love and hope." She answered. She reached out to both of them, holding their hands and giving them a squeeze and sending a wave of calming reassurance power into them, her hands warming up and glowing slightly.

"I love you both-"

"I hope in different buggen' ways!" Newt cut in.

She rolled her eyes with a small huff, but the corners of her mouth lifted.

"What, aren't ya into the whole communal girlfriend thing?" Minho asked, with a smirk.

She ripped her hand from his and smacked the back of his head.

"Ouch! Feisty little Pixy!"

She glared at him for a moment.

"Glad the Minho is back."

He exhaled, his smirk sliding off his face. "Yeah...you're right."

"I know I am."

Newt had slid his arm around her and pulled her in between his legs, wrapping his arms around her waist.

"We both needed to hear it. I needed to hear it again. You really are the healer of the Glade. Not just physically, but you heal the doubts. And everything else." He muttered, his face pressed into her back. She was quiet for a moment, thinking. She turned to look at him, and then at Minho.

"Newt. Minho. You call me a healer...but my job isn't for me to fix you. As a healer, I'm not here to rescue you, you're not powerless. I won't fix you, because you are not broken. I'm not here to heal you, because I see your wholeness. I'm here... to walk with you through the darkness, until you can see yourself, until you remember your light. I'm here to help you, not to do it for you. You need to be willing to have hope and see the light."

Both boys had fresh tears in their eyes. They both leaned forwards and had a group hug. Maybe it was weird, but in a place like this, where boys die at the hands of monsters, where memories of love and friends and family are taken, where happiness never lasts, they stayed huddled together holding onto each other.

Evelyn pulled some more blankets and pillows from the MedHut, and made a bed on the floor for Minho. He curled up and slept the rest of the night, full blown panic attacks always took everything out of him. But he slept with a new drive and resolve. Newt pulled Evelyn close, snuggling his face into her hair, his arms wrapped around her. Vowing to do his best to be the hope these other boys needed. Evelyn fell asleep exhausted and drained, trying very hard to believe every word she said.
