Chapter 3: Not a Witch

The next morning Evelyn woke up with the sun beating down on her face. It was comfortable. Her back was a bit stiff, and slightly chilly from the dew, but it was al right. She sat up and made her way back to the edge of the forest, some of the guys were waking up, some of them were already wondering around. A boy with dark hair and eyes with earrings in both ears came striding over in her direction.

"You are Evelyn, yeah?" He called before he reached her.

She just nodded once, wearily of him, he had the look of a trouble maker about him. However he stopped a distance away, giving her a wide bubble of personal space.

"So...there was a hole bunch of boxes and stuff waiting for us this morning when we woke up, we hulled it all over to that dilapidated building," He nodded in the direction of the building, "There are a few crates that have your name on them."

"Mine?"

He nodded, and gestured for her to follow. She hesitated and then followed. He showed her the small pile of crates and boxes. Frowning in confusion she shifted through them. One contained some clothes, bathroom supplies. The rest contained herbs, small glass jars, wood bowls and measuring spoons, stone bowls and mortars to crush herbs. There were a few leather bound note books, pencils and paper.

She stood up looking around, she spotted the boy she was searching for, and made her way over to him.

"Hey, umm Nick?" She ask quietly.

He spun around towards her soft voice, with a smile. His eyes lighting up.

"Hey Evy! Where did you go last night?"

"The forest."

"All alone?"

She just nodded.

He frowned and folded his arms, "You were safe in there?"

She frowned, wondering what he was asking, or referring to. "I was fine."

He just hummed, his frown didn't change. He just stood there, his dark eyes watching her, "I feel safe in the forest."

"Fine." He sighed, "What did you want to ask Evy?"

"There were a bunch of boxes that were sent up for me..."

He nodded, waiting for her to go on.

"Can I umm.." She stammered, looking down at her booted feet, "Can I umm maybe use one of the...ummm...extra buildings?"

"Why are you asking me?"

She shrugged, "You seem to be the one...people uhh are viewing as in charge."

The look of surprise made her lip twitch into a small smile.

"I don't want to be the leader! And leader of what?"

"Nick, Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge."

"That was deep Evy!"

"You seemed to make sure everyone yesterday had a place by the fire and had something to eat. No one else cared enough. Also... your the only one to ask where I went last night. You see everyone. Weather or not you want the leadership role, its yours."

"Man, the girl who says nothing...when you do speak its wise words of wisdom." He smiled down at her, making her feel seen.

"So..? That's a yes to one of the smaller huts?"

He nodded. "I'll help carry them."

They spent the morning moving the crates over to the hut closest to the forest. He helped her find a wood table; there was an abundance in the barn.

"All right, you're okay now? I should go see what the others are up to." Nick asked, pushing his glasses back up his nose.

Evelyn nodded. "Thank you Nick."

He left with a nod. She propped the door open with a large rock and started setting up her space. Hephaestus showed up on her windowsill, he just sat there, with his big red eyes watching her work.

"Hello. You come to hang out?"

The lizard didn't say anything, just flicked its metal tail.

"Well, your welcome to stay. I'm just organizing. What do ya think? I have no idea where this stuff came from, but I know it's mine. I don't know why...but I know what it all is and what it all does! Why is that, do you think little Hephaestus?"

"Who you buggen' talkin' to?"

The voice made Evelyn jump with a small yelp, and drop the stone bowl she was holding.

"Oh, I'm bloody sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!"

Evelyn turned to see Newt standing in the doorway. He had one hand shoved into his pocket and the other was nervously running through his sandy hair.

"It's okay." She whispered, picking up the bowl, and placing it on the table.

"So, who were ya talking to?"

"Hephaestus."

"Uhh who?" He asked frowning, and cocking his head.

Evelyn just pointed to the little lizard in the window. It had scurried down the wall and jumped onto the table. She held her hand out for it and it scurried over onto her hand and up her arm onto her shoulder. It buried itself into her hair.

"Huh. We've seen those buggen' things, but no one has gotten close. One of them ended shredding a guy's finger this morning." Newt said.

She frowned. This little mechanical lizard hasn't done anything to harm her...yet. Newt was still standing in the door, almost like he was scared to come any closer. He was looking around the room. She had strung up the herbs and dried flowers, she had glass jars of flowers and herbs and plants all over the windowsill and table. She had a crate that was filled with the journals. She had one brown leather bound one open, with a sketch of Hephaestus on the windowsill, surrounded by the flowers.

"Sooo...you like some kind of witch or sorceress..?" He asked, his eyes flicking around to the glass jars filled with different things.

"Excuse me?" She asked, slightly taken aback.

He just shrugged and pointed at the jars and herbs.

"So because I know how to use plants in medicine I'm a witch?" She frowned, felling hurt.

"What? No! Uh, I guess my tone wasn't very blood kind. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I'm feeling...off. Sorry. It was meant as a joke or tease." He hung his head, and rubbed the back of his neck.

She just hummed. Turning away and puttering around the table, Hephaestus still perched on her shoulder.

"Wait..did you say you knew medicine?" He asked.

She nodded.

"So you're like a healer?"

She shrugged.

"That's bloody cool! Did you remember it all? Or..?"

She shrugged again. "A little."

"You don't talk much do you."

She shook her head.

"You were talking to that thing, that buggen' machine thing just fine. Just not to people?"

"He doesn't call me a witch." She said quietly.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw him deflate. He stood in the door way awkwardly. Evelyn continued to putter slowly at the table.

"Evelyn?" He asked,

She just hummed.

"Are...are you mad?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Are you hurt?"

"I don't get hurt." She said quietly.

"That's bloody weird. Everyone gets hurt at some point."

She just nodded. He turned to leave.

"Newt?" She called quietly, finally looking up.

He looked over his shoulder, raising an eyebrow.

"Was there a reason you came by?"

"Oh. Oh yeah. A kid named..uh...Frypan? said that he made some food for lunch."

"His name is frypan?" She frowned, and then giggled.

Newt turned back towards her, with a smile.

"Well apparently his name is Siggy..but he threw a frying pan at some other kids head when he laughed at the name. So...Nick started calling him Frypan. And it's stuck."

Evelyn giggled harder. Newt stood watching her in amusement, she giggled until she had tears running down her face, she tried to keep the giggles contained, she slapped a hand over her mouth and ended up snorting a few times, making Newt grin even bigger. Hephaestus didn't like that and he leapt off her shoulder, digging his sharp claws into her, ripping her shirt and drawing blood.

"ouch!" She yelped, "Hephy! Not cool you little stinker."

"Did he hurt you?" Newt frowned in concern, stepping into the room. She waved him off.

"I'm fine. It's nothing."

She could already feel her skin knitting back together.

"Thank you Newt, I needed that laugh."

His concern melted into a smile. She smiled back, glad he didn't ask more about how she was doing, she knew she could heal herself, it wasn't that she had memories of it, but she just knew, like it was always there. Like she knew what all the herbs were and what they did, like how her name came back, it was just there, always a part of who she was.

Later that afternoon Evelyn was out behind her little hut when there was a commotion at the front of her hut.

"EVELYN!" Some screamed.

She looked up from her work and rushed to the front of the house, whipping her muddy hands on her pants. There was a crowd of boys, all panicking and yelling.

"EVELYN!" Nick yelled again.

"What? Nick, what's going on?"

"Newt said you knew medicine? Can you help? There was a fight, and a knife was pulled, he's bleeding out!"

Evelyn frowned. And nodded.

"Bring him inside." She spun on her heel, and entered the hut.

"Where do you want him?" Someone asked.

"I guess we have no table or bed here, so the floor I guess."

A group of boys brought in another boy, and laid him on the ground. It was the boy with double earrings, the one from this morning.

"Out." She ordered the boys. They all frowned and started to object, but Nick shoed them out, and he started to leave.

"No, Nick, I need you here, please."

He turned around.

"All right Evy. What can I do?"

Evelyn pulled his shirt up, there was a three inch wide stab wound, warm hot blood was bubbling up and dripping down his side.

"Come here and put pressure on his! I need to clean my hands!"

Nick came down and took the cloth and held it, making the boy groan.

Evelyn got up and quickly cleaned her hands. She dropped back down.

"Don't you need medical supplies?" Nick asked, panic in his voice making it sound a little higher than normal.

"No."

"What-"

"Watch."

She shoed his hands away and removed the blood soaked rag. Placed her own hands on either side of his stab would, she closed her eyes, concentrating. She felt the power flowing threw her, like blood in her veins and oxygen in her lungs. She focused and sent the power through her arms and down into her hands and then into the boys abdomen. She knew something was off right away. She knew she could do this, she knew she had done this before (details of who and where and why were all erased, all blank) so when she started to feel her energy depleting she knew there was something wrong.

She felt her body temperature rising and beads of sweat dotted her forehead, her head felt dizzy. But she felt the bleeding in the boy slow down and stop. She was panting now, her eyes fluttered open. Evelyn could feel everything internally was starting to knit together. Black spots danced in her vision.

She was shoved backwards.

"Stop! Evy! Stop!" Nick cried, his face pale and full of panic.

She fell backwards, her arms were too tired to catch herself so she landed hard on her back. She lay panting and shaking.

"What the actual hell?" He crocked.

"I have magic healing hands." Evelyn said with the little energy she had to be sarcastic.

"Yeah I can damn well see that!" He cried, "But you just about killed yourself!"

"Yeah, that normally doesn't happen." She panted still laying on the ground.

"You've done this before?"

She just nodded.

"I don't remember any details, just that I can. Also never had issues before."

"Well, no more, now just old fashioned medicine! He's not going to die anymore, but you might if you keep going!"

She just nodded her head. Nick was looking at her with a mixture of awe and slight fear. She slowly pushed up onto her elbows, and blinked the exhausted haze from her eyes.

"Are you gonna call me a witch too?"

"Who the hell called you a witch?" He asked appalled, Evelyn could see the anger in his face.

She shook her head, "Doesn't matter."

"Well, no I wouldn't say witch. I'd call you a healer." He said with finality.

"Healer..."

"Yes. Does anyone else know about this?" He asked, holding a hand out for her.

She took it and he helped her up. She shook her head in answer to his question. She got up on shaking legs and grabbed some things off the table. She knelt back down beside the boy. She started to clean the still open wound. Back at the table she used some herbs and water made a past to help with healing and the pain. Then wrapped it. She felt exhausted, and she apparently looked like it, because Nick made her sit down.

"You look dead on your feet! Jeez Evy, you really did almost kill yourself!"

"I know I've done harder things than that! I don't know what's going on!" She said quietly, looking down at her hands in her lap.

"Not sure. But how about we only use those healing hands if we absolutely have to? And only then when the poor shank is going to die, and only then the bare minimum?"

She sighed and nodded her head.

"And for now...lets keep this between us, yeah?"

She nodded. Keeping her powers hidden was another thing she knew she used to do.

"But," Nick said, crouching down in front of her, "It was really cool to see, you save George. And that is something he wont forget or me. Thanx Evy. I'm sure you feel weird being the only girl around here, but I think you found your calling, where you're gonna fit in. Your our healer."

He patted her knee with a small smile.

"What's gonna happen to the other kid? The one who stabbed him? I don't think we can have people running around stabbing others when an argument breaks out."

"Very true. Again she speaks wise words of wisdom." He chuckled.

We're gonna have a gathering around the fire at supper tonight. And we're gonna discuses what were going to do."

She nodded, her exhausted eyes closing, and she leaned her head back against the hut wall.

"Sleep Evy, I'll make sure someone comes to check on both of you."

"Thanks Nick." She whispered.
