Chapter 17: Found & Awake
Sonny and Minho sat with Evelyn for a long time.
"You should go tell Alby and Nick we found her." Minho said.
Sonny got up and left, stomping through the forest. Minho continued to hold Evelyn and she cried. She eventually exhausted herself and her overexcited body fell into a deep sleep. Minho picked her up and carried her back to her hut where he met with Nick and Sonny.
"She's okay, just exhausted."
Nick exhaled in relief. And came into her cabin with Minho and laid her down in the bed. Nick pulled the blanket up and they both stood at the side of her bed. She shifted so she curled up on her side with a small whimper, looking very much like a small child. Nick gestured with his head and they left the Hut.
"What happened?" Nick asked, Sonny just said you found her.
"She was uhh.."
Nick folded his arms and narrowed his eyes.
"Crying in the Deadheads."
"Shucken hell." He muttered, running a hand through his hair. With a long groan he closed his eyes and tilted his head back.
"Can I tell ya something Min?"
He didn't wait for an answer, "I hate being a leader. Like seriously I hate it."
He sighed again, "you two made up?'
Minho nodded.
"Good."
"I gotta go run. Watch her closely."

She slept the whole day and straight through the night. When she finally woke up the doors were rumbling open. She lay in her bed for a moment, just collecting her thoughts. Finally with a groan she rolled out of bed. She grabbed some of her things. And stood staring at the trunk of clothes then with a shrug she grabbed something. And made her way to the showers.
She actually took her time, washing her hair scrubbing everything out, all the grim and sweat and anything else that was in there. She ran a razer over herself quick and soaped her self up. Taking her time and focusing on her physical health made her feel better. Her heart was still heavy and she felt the cold emptiness, but she felt a little more human. She turned the shower off and dried herself off and wrapped her hair in a towel while she changed into something she hardly ever wore. It was sent up in one of the boxes for her in the very beginning.
It was a simple white cotton sun dress, and throwing her sneakers on, she ran a brush through her long golden hair. Letting it air dry, it would become slightly wavy. She threw her brown leather bag over her shoulder, and she took a deep steadying breath. She felt almost like herself.
Pushing the door open, the rising sun warmed her face. And her stomach rumbled. She dropped the towel into the basket and made her way to the kitchen.
"Evelyn!" Fry's big loud voice echoed through the kitchen.
She actually let a small smile play in her lips.
"Don't you look lovely today!" He smiled at her so warmly it made her heavy heart lighten slightly.
"Thank you Fry, that's sweet." Her voice was still thin and fragile.
With a big smile making his eyes sparkle he handed her a big stack of fluffy pancakes and bacon with fresh strawberries and a big mug of coffee.
She walked to her regular table and shyly sat down. Heads turned and all of their faces lighting up.
"Pixy!" Minho grinned bounding over like a big puppy dog. He grabbed her hands and pulled her from her seat and spun her around making her dress twirl around her knees.
"You're a real like Pixy! Looking at you in a dress!"
She looked up at her best friend. His eyes still held the sorrow she had, and they still begged for forgiveness. She wrapped her arms around her giving him a hug, he wrapped his arms around her too, giving her a squeeze.
"I'm sorry. Ev...please forgive me!" He whispered into her hair.
"Already done and forgotten." She pulled away, "we both said things we regret when we're hurting. I'm also sorry."
"Nah, you were right. You do more for this shucked place than anyone. And you need more appreciation."
"Bring me coffee and we're good."
He smirked, "deal."

She was working at her table in a quiet MedHut. She sent Jeff on a break when there was a moan from behind her. She whipped around, her eyes wide and heart thudding.
Gally was stirring. She dropped what she was doing and rushed over. Quickly untying his wrists and biceps from the bed, she backed up a step or two. Gally groaned again.
"Gally?" She whispered.
His eyelids slowly blinked open a look of confusion on his face and apprehension in hers. He slowly turned his head towards her voice. His eyes blurry and unfocused.
"Gal...Gally?" She whispered again, "how are you feeling?"
Without saying anything he sat up, kickithis legs over the side of the bed, she took a step backwards her muscles tensing, ready to run if needed.
"I ain't gonna hurt you."
His voice was rough and scratchy from screaming. He blinked a few more times and rubbed his eyes.
"Hold on, I'll grab some water."
She rushed out of the room, her dress and hair willing around her. She came back with a cup of water. He drank it all, handing it back and he just sat slumped. She cautiously stepped closer and sunk into the chair beside the bed. He didn't move, just glanced at her and then back down at the floor.
They sat for a while in silence. He seemed slightly broken, not knowing what to do with himself. She didn't push anything, just sitting beside him, cautiously she reached a hand out and took his. He didn't pull away, so she took that as a good sign, and tightened her grip. His hand was limp for a long time. But slowly, she felt him tighten his grip, holding her hand.
She shifted from the chair to the bed, sitting right beside him, not breaking the hold. He seemed to be holding her hand like a life line. His body started to tremble. She tried pulling away to grab a blanket, but he didn't let go. And then the heart wrenching broken sobs started.
"Oh, Gally!" She cried and pulled her hand from his only to wrap her arms around the broad boy. She held him close while he just cried. Evelyn didn't know what happened or what was going on, but she held him, that's what he needed. Not someone bombarding him with questions and demanding answers. She was quiet and patient.
"It...it was awful!" He cried. "I saw...I remembered!"
She just hummed, gently rubbing his back. She wasn't going to push it, he would talk in his own time.
"I remembered from before!"
"What did you remember?" She finally asked quietly.
"You saved Minho from a bullet hole. That was the first time we meet you." He chocked.
"I did?" She asked, her eyes wide now.
He nodded. Sniffling he sat up, willing the tears from his face. He took a breath with his eyes closed. His body was still only shivering slightly every once in a while.
"Your powers...were stronger. We were...in a hall...something happened, and a gun went off. You...yelled and then went right into save Minho's life. Used your fingers to dig the bullet out and healed him all up."
Her eyes were wide open and a hand covered her mouth.
"You were already a guardian angel." He muttered, his eyes downcast.
"That... doesn't sound all bad." She whispered, slipping her hand into his again, he clung to it.
"That was the only good thing. And I don't wanna talk about it." He snapped.
"It's alright. How about I make some tea."
There was a knock on the door and Jeff picked his head in.
"Hey! He's up!"
"Who the shuck is that?" Gally growled, his eyes narrowing.
Evelyn waved Jeff into the room with a smile.
"Gally, this is Jeff. He's technically the Greenie...but he's been through more Klunk his first week here then other Greenies."
Gally growled slightly. She smiled, he was always slightly skeptical of the new kids until they proved themselves, and it seemed nothing changed, maybe making it slightly more defined, but still the same Gally.
"He's a MedJack with me. He helped save you on his day one without crying like a baby. He also helped save Newt."
Gally's head whipped around so fast she heard a crack.
"Newt? What happened to Newt?"
His voice was loud and demanding. She flinched. Taking her hand back and fidgiting with a strand of hair, she closed her eyes for a moment.
"He...he-" she teared up.
"There was an accident in the Maze. Minho and Ev saved him. Brought him here and we worked together to patch him up." Jeff said without a waver in his voice. His eyes steady, watching Gally.
Gally's eyes were narrowed.
"You can go see if you want. He's still unconscious in the next room." Jeff shrugged, "if you don't believe us."
Gally growled. But looked away finally, his body slumping. Evelyn looked to Jeff and mouthed a quick thank you. He nodded and walked back out of the room.
"Gally, rest, you still look tired. I'll get you some tea and some food Fry Frypan." Evelyn said quietly, and stood up. "It's good to have you back Gally." She kissed the top of his head and left.
Jeff went to inform Nick and Alby that Gally woke up. Evelyn tended to Newt, he had spiked a fever, and that worried her immensely. Fevers were never a good thing, that ment infection somewhere. She changed his bandages, and with warm water infused with some healing herbs and plants she cleaned him up again, washing the sweat away. She hummed the same wordless tune. She readjusted the ice packs around his leg to help with swelling.
"Might want to give him another dose of pain meds." Jeff suggests.
Evelyn nodded in agreement. So she administered that. And then sat beside him on the bed, holding his cold limp hand. Jeff plunked down on the chair beside the bed.
"Jeff...?" She asked hesitantly, still staring at Newt's pale blank face. Wishing with all her heart for him to open his eyes.
"Hmm?" Came his response.
"I'm going to try my powers. I feel good, and I know I can...umm over do it sometimes...please if I'm going to..do something...or uhh..." She trailed off not really knowing what she was asking.
"I understand. I'll keep a close eye on ya."
With a nod, she held Newt's hand close to her chest, close to her heart and then a hand cupping his cold bruised check, leaning over him slightly, her eyes flicked over his face. His long eyashes brushed his cheek, his sun kissed skin looked pale and waxy, but he looked calm, and he looked younger. Younger and innocent.
She couldn't stop herself she gently kissed his forehead. Her lips tingled. Reminding her of their last kiss. It was rough and wild, making her heart beat faster and heat rise inside of her. She closed her eyes harnessing that energy, feeling an overwhelming amount of the healing coursing through her veins she sent it down and through her hands.
Her eyes fluttered open, seeing her hands glowing, giving the whole room a warm gentle glow. She saw his chest rise. He gasped like he was drowning, and he could finally breath. His eyes shot open, his chocolate brown eyes locked onto her bright green ones. It was only a few seconds, but she knew he saw her. Evelyn knew deep in her heart. She released the powers and let her glowing hands fade. His eyes fluttered closed.
She could feel the depletion in her energy, but it wasn't nearly as bad. And she could feel his fever braking. He needed now to fight, he needed the will to fight. Maybe now...that he had seen her he would have the drive to fight and wake up for good. She knew she couldn't make him, but she wished and she prayed.
Jeff patted her shoulder. "Didn't need me at all. I'll grab us some lunch, I'm sure you'll want to eat here."
She patted his hand that was rested on her shoulder. "Your a good guy Jeffy. And a good friend. Thank you. I couldn't have done this without you. I'll say this once, the creators did right, sending you when they did. Thank you."
"You're all right Ev." He smiled at her. Giving her shoulder a squeeze, he left her sitting beside Newt.
With another sigh she leaned over and kissed his forehead, "Please Newt...please wake up. I need you." She whispered, her lips still brushing his forehead.
It may have been her imagination but, she swore she felt his hand give hers a squeeze.
