Chapter 14: Rock Bottom

**Trigger Warning - Suiside**

Evelyn stood frozen in her spot utterly confused. Her chest was still rising and falling, her breathing coming in shirt gasps. Her head was still clouded and her brain was having a hard time keeping up with what just happened.

She lifted her hand, her finger tips gently running over her tingling lips.

"What ..what just happened?" She whispered to herself.

Finally blinking away the fog when Gally's scream cut through the Glad. Reality hit her hard in the gut. With her mind still reeling and her heart still beating wildly she returned to tend to Gally.

A hand gently shook her awake.

"Huh? Whaaa?" She jumped, her eyes flying open.

"Relax Pixy! It's just me!" Minho chuckled.

She groand and she sat up straight and stretched. Her back was sore from falling asleep in the wood chair beside Gally. With another groan she rubbed her tired eyes with her fists.

"You look like you could use a good night's sleep."

"The dead on your feet, need a shower desperately isn't the new look?" She rolled her eyes.

"You've been hanging out with me too much." He frowned, but then pretended to wipe a tear, "I'm so proud! That sass!"

She gave him a playful shove.

"What do you want Min? Last time you woke me up early you needed to talk."

"Straight to the point, huh? No good morning Minho. How is my favorite Glader doing?" He folded his arms and raised an eyebrow.

Evelyn rolled her eyes, got up from the chair with another groan, making her way out of the room to the big open room.

"That would inflate your already too big ego. If it got any bigger, you'd be stuck in the doorway!" She turned to face him folding her own arms, "and know what I would do if you were stuck?"

He raised his eyebrows.

"I'd stand and laugh."

He snorted and then chuckled.

"Ahh my little Pixy, you're too cute when you try to out sass me!"

"What do you want Min?" She tried to stifle a yawn.

"Have you seen Newt?"

She felt a flop in her stomach and her face warmed up, quickly turning towards the table, trying to hide her blush.

"Last night, yeah." Her voice came out slightly strangled.

"Hmm. I haven't seen him since Supper last night."

"What?" She spun around, fear spiked through her.

"He said he had some stuff to do, and would see me later." Minho shrugged, "he didn't look too good, I was gonna give him the day off."

"He came here after everyone went to bed, wanted to....uh talk."

Minho raised his eyebrow, and her face grew warm.

"Talk? We're calling it 'talk' are we?" He teased.

"Shut up."

"Ahh so he finally had the guts to kiss you? Only took him a whole shucken year!"

"What's the first time!" She said in self defence, then her eyes went wide, and she slapped a hand over her mouth and Minho roared with laughter.

"Shuck it Pixy!"

"Shut up." She grumbled again, her face burning.

"Okay okay." He chuckled, it died out and they stood quiet, in an awkward quiet, both thinking about Newt and where he would have gone, "So you haven't see him since?"

"No. He showed up, said he wanted to talk, and then..uh..."

"He kissed you good and hard."

"Minho!" She gasped, going even reder.

"But I'm so right."

She rolled her eyes, "Then he said something kinda weird and then just abruptly left into the shadows."

"Mysterious."

"No, he appolagized for his behaviour all year and then said I wouldn't have to worry anymore."

Minho didn't say anything, just frowned. "Yeah, okay, that's weird."

An unease and a sick twisting grew in her stomach, her heart beat picked up.

"Minho...something is wrong! We gotta find Alby, I sent Nick on bed rest."

He nodded and they both sprinted from the MedHut, Jeff was just leaving the Homestead.

"Hey, Jeff, I'm sorry, can you keep an eye on the Medhut right now? We got something to take care of, I'm sorry to throw you into the deep end...though there isn't much to do with Gally, just try to get him some water."

"On it boss!"

"Alby!" Minho hollered, the Glader turned around at his name. He always had a look of annoyance on his face, he wasn't always like that, it kept the Greenies from bugging him. He slowed his pace and Evelyn and Minho caught up to him.

"Have you seen Newt at all lately?" Evelyn panted.

"Yeah, why?"

"When?" Minho demanded. His face was set and his eyes intense, Evelyn felt the same. The worry and apprehension were steadily rising, making her feel quite nauseous.

"Relax shank, it was this morning, he said he was gonna get a head start on the maze." Alby gave him a weird look, but his eyes flicked to Evelyn who had staggered slightly. She felt her world teeter violently, her vision blurred for a moment. Minho grabbed her elbow.

"Hey, you okay?"

"No. No I'm not!" Her voice was hardly above a whisper, her knees felt like buckling. Her hands went cold and numb, she knew her face drained of colour. Alby and Minho both stepped closer, she grabbed both their arms and they helped her sink to the grass. They crouched in front of her, wearing the same worried expressions.

"Pixy? What's wrong?"

"It's Newt...Min.." She turned her bright green eyes onto him, "Last night...that was his way to say good bye..."

"What? Goodbye? Why would he-" Minho froze in the middle of his sentence, his face also drained of colour. "Shuck. No. He wouldn't!"

"Wouldn't what?"

Minho and Evelyn ignored Alby for a moment, having their own discussion, finally figuring everything out.

"He's been looking awful again, closed off, sharp and snappy, have you noticed he hardly eats? I doubt he's sleeping well, the bags under his eyes...then his whole, you wont have to worry anymore.. and why would he go out alone into the maze? You guys always run together! He lied to Alby..."

"No. No he wouldn't." His voice was thin, trying to convince himself otherwise.

Evelyn knew. She knew in her heart Newt had said good bye in his own way, last night and it took everything in her to not break down and sob. She had to find him. She finally turned her eyes onto Alby, who was watching their exchange his eyes wide and worried.

"Alby. Which door did he go through? And how long ago?"

"Do you really think he would try something?" Alby asked sceptically, but the hesitation in his answer and the worry in his eyes said he believed Evelyn and Minho.

"Yes." They said together.

"Shuck." Alby cursed, "He left about forty five minutes ago, through the West door."

Evelyn cursed just as bad as Minho. She scrambled to her feet as Minho stood up turning towards the West door. He started towards it, Evelyn hot on his heels. Alby following.

"Ev, you're not coming." Minho said firmly.

"Ha. Shuck you Minho." She said, jogging beside him.

"Ev, you should stay here!" Alby called as they got to the Maze door. She ignored Alby.

Alby grabbed her arm trying to pull her back, but she ripped her arm away with a snarl, and her normal gentle green eyes flashed dangerously.

"NO Alby!"

He was so taken aback that she raised her voice, and fierceness on her face he let go.

"I'm going to find him!" She yelled.

"Fine. Pixy, you're with me! Let's go!"

She nodded a quick thank you and spun away from Alby, her hair flying around her and she followed Minho at his heels. Fear and adrenaline rushing through her, allowing her to keep up with the Keeper. She could feel the wild fear and trepidation was bubbling inside her, she could feel it rissing, trying to force its way out. She had to keep a tight lid on it or it wouldn't do anyone any good.

Her lungs burnt and her heart was slamming in her chest so hard it hurt. Cold sweat was running down her temples. She knew if she was starting to hyperventilate, the pur raw panic gripped her heart.

"Where would he go?" She managed to ask between gasps.

"My guess..." The Keeper answered, slowing down just slightly, "is somewhere he could climb. There isn't much else he could do in here..unless he used his Runners knife..." He trailed off, his eyes wide and glassy.

Evelyn stumbled with a sob trying to escape her throat. Minho grabbed her elbow to keep her from falling, without missing a stride.

"Newt?" She screamed, desperate to find him. Tears blurred her vision.

Left. Left. Right. Straight. They ran, flat out for what felt like forever, but it was probably more like twenty to thirty minutes. But trying to keep a raging panic attack from escaping and sprint was difficult.

They rounded yet another turn that looked just like the last turn. A wild terrible anguished scream echoed through the stone corridors. It bounced around, making it sound like it was from all around them.

"Newt!" They both screamed.

They pushed even faster. Pushing her body this far felt almost the same as trying to heal someone with life threatening injuries. The symptoms felt the same.

They both scrambled to a stop when they heard words being screamed into the emptiness of the Maze halls.

"I hope you're happy! This is on you!"

It was so broken and full of such deep sorrow Evelyn's knees finally buckled. She crashed into the stone floor, sending pain up her legs into her back. Falling forwards onto her hands, she let the sob take over. She actually felt like her heart was ripped in half.

She heard a wild sob of despair.

Her head snapped up, eyes wide open,

"NO!"

She screamed so loud, her vocal cords just about ripped. She pushed herself up and ran. Minho right behind her. They turned the corner just as Newt's body was free falling.

Evelyn's legs gave out. She collapsed back to the ground, her hands over her mouth wide open in a silent scream. She watched in helpless horror as his leg became tangled in the thick ivy.

She heard the bone snap from where she was. Newt screamed. Evelyn flinched. The ivy slowed him down just enough. His body flipped upside down, and he was slammed into the stone wall. The ivy gave way and he tumbled the rest of the way down. His head hit the stone floor with such a sickening crack bile rose up in Evelyn's throat.

Newt wasn't screaming anymore. He wasn't crying anymore, either. And he definitely wasn't moving.

Evelyn wasn't breathing. Minho wasn't moving. The Maze had gone silent. Evelyn's world had gone black. She registered nothing but the unmoving boy wrapped in ivy, laying in a crumpled heap.

Like a switch inside her was flicked, she rose to her feet and found herself moving forward. She knelt down. With a surprisingly steady hand she reached out and touched his shoulder. Instantly she felt the rhythmic thudding of his heart, life was still flowing through his veins. She could feel his body going into shock, but he was still there. Newt was still alive.

With a wild gasp, she reached for his face, gently turning it towards her. He had tear tracks down his face. Deep dark bags under his eyes, and now bright red blood covered his face.

Evelyn cursed.

"You're still alive!" She breathed.

He was still tangled in the ivy, his leg bending at an angle that made even Evelyn's stomach twist and had to look away.

"Minho! Knife!" She said.

Glancing over her shoulder she saw Minho leaning, one hand in the wall and bending over, he had emptied his breakfast on the stone floor.

"Minho! Knife! Now!" She yelled, "he's still alive!"

He straightened, wiped his mouth and scoffed.

"What are ya gonna do? Finish him off?"

"Give me the damn knife Minho! Now!" She screamed, anger flashed through her so fast he actually flinched.

He tossed the knife and it slid across the floor she scrambled to pick it up. Twisting back to the bloody unconscious body, she started cutting the ivy away from his twisted leg. The knife was sharp and she made fast work of it. She had nothing to stop the bleeding with, she knew head wounds bleed a lot more, and it always looked worse, but still, she needed something.  Minho and Evelyn came in here unprepared, bringing nothing but Minhos knife and his vest.

She pulled her shirt off and used the knife to rip it into long strips. As best she could she wrapped it around his head.

"Come on! We gotta get him back!"

Minho had finally made his way closer, watching her furiously work as fast as possible.

"Yeah, yeah.... you're right. Okay..." He muttered.

She knew Minho was in shock, she needed to get both of them back to the Glad. But Evelyn knew she wasn't strong enough to carry Newt. With the help of Minho and Evelyn's very strict simple instructions they got Newt up and draped over them both.

It was slow going. Evelyn was a lot shorter than Minho, so the weight distribution was off. She was sending small currents of healing energy into Newt, trying to keep him from bleeding out or going into shock. At least not yet. Minho was muttering to himself. Newt's head rolled limply. Every time his injured leg bumped the ground she flinched.

They rounded the last turn and saw Alby still standing.

"Alby!" Evelyn screamed. His head jerked up, and was charging towards them.

"Shucken hell!"

"We gotta get him-"

"Yeah, pass him here." Evelyn gladly ducked from under Newt's arm as Alby took over.

"Go! Go get ready. Jeff is already there."

Without an answer she sprinted. Slamming the door open making Jeff jump.

"You found him?" He asked getting up.

"Yeah. I need you to go to the Builders and get two lengths of board, gotta make a splint."

He nodded and was gone. She scrambled around collecting the things she was going to need. Just as the door burst open and Alby and Minho came through the door, supporting a barly alive Newt.

Evelyn shoved everything off the table in the middle of the room and they laid him down.

"Move!" She barked.

They backed up, eyes wide and watched helplessly as she flew around. Jeff barged through the door. He froze taking in the scene and then clamped his jaw and nodded; without missing a beat he joined Evelyn in the frantic fight for Newt's life.

They had to rip his shirt wide to see the damage, it looked like when he slammed into the wall, he broke a rib. They also had to cut his pants. His leg was snapped in two places. It was ready swollen red and bruising.

"Move!" She barked.

Jeff backed away. She layed her hands on him and with the wild controlled panic rising inside of her, Evelyn sent everything she had into Newt. She was willing to put her life on the line for him. She was willing to do whatever it took to save him, because after a year, she realized, she couldn't live in a world with him. She needed him. Because she loved him.
