Chapter 11: Moonlit Forest

Newt held her tight while she cried her self dry. She cried until her eyes were swollen and red. He only loosened his hold around her when she sat up, pulling away still sniffling and hiccupping.

"Thank you," She whispered, still avoiding his eyes, "And sorry..." Evelyn rubbed her eyes with her fists, and wiped her nose. Taking another long shuddering breath.

"No...it's me who should be saying bloody sorry. You didn't...I was...I was buggen' horrible to you. An' you, Lee, didn't deserve any of it." His voice was raw and horse from also crying.

She finally looked up at him, even in the dark he didn't look good himself, he was pale, and he had large bags under his eyes. His hair was a mess, and he had lost weight. Her worry increased. But right now his eyes looked like the gentle soft spoken boy from before.

"I shouldn't'a ignored you all bloody afternoon, I know how close they were to you." He said quietly.

He shifted so he was sitting beside her, his knees pulled up, his forearms resting on his knees. She pulled her knees tight to her chest and wrapped her arms around her knees; resting her chin on her knees. They were quiet for a while, Evelyn just stared at the fresh turned earth. Out of the side of her eye she saw him glancing at her, and nervously running his hand through his shaggy hair.

"Newt, were you following me?" She finally asked, turning her head slightly to see him.

His big brown eyes were slightly washed out in the moonlight, but the tears from his eyes made them sparkle. He looked up at her, slightly surprised. He let his legs flop and he sat cross legged, his elbows on his knees. He sat quiet for a moment, rubbing his thumb on his bottom lip.

"No. Not at first." He finally admittee.

She sat quiet waiting for an explanation. There was no need to push him, he was finally talking to her, and not snapping with cutting remarks.

"Minho chewed me out pretty good. I had to clear my head, I couldn't sleep...I have trouble sleeping lately...left homestead and wandered around for a bit. I only saw you when were talking to...the lizard."

"Oh." She whispered, her cheeks heating up. She had let her bitterness slip through.

"I watched you walk away and...uh may have followed..." He trailed off.

Her bitterness and hurt slipped out again, "Were you going to see if I was up to any witchy things?"

She watch him shake his head. "No." His voice was quiet. After another inhale, "You seemed to know where you're goin', but you seemed...you looked so..." He paused trying to find the right word, "So broken. An' then I heard you cryin' and my heart just about buggen' broke."

She was quiet taking in his words.

"There's only so much sorrow I can hold." Evelyn sniffled.

"An' I'm part of that problem. I'm sorry Lee." His voice took a slight pleading tone. "I don't...I don't know...this place just bloody sucks! I hate it here!" He picked up a twig off the forest floor and snapped it, and tossed it with a moody look twisting his face, his eyes grew dark again.

"I hate it so much."

"Do...you think any of us like it? Newt I just watch one of my best friends turn into a monster and stab..." She felt the tightness in her chest and throat, it was hard to swallow. She took a shuddering inhale.

"I watched him get stabbed through the neck and then...Jack-" She had to stop, she couldn't talk anymore, her lungs were having trouble taking the proper amount of oxygen.

Newt shrunk, his head hanging.

"Sorry." He mumbled.

Evelyn placed her head on her knees. Her eyes closed, trying to get her breathing back to normal. Newt sat quietly beside her, snapping twigs. They sat without saying anything for a long time. Evelyn finally loosened her hold on her legs and slowly unraveled herself.

Hephaestus crawled into her lap. His big red eyes looking up at her. He almist had a sad expression on his little lizard face. He cocked his head at her. She smiled sadly down at him. She ran her fingers over his back, he arched almost like a cat when you pet it. It made her lift the corners of her mouth into a smile.

"Your eyes light up when you smile."

She flicked her eyes to Newt, he was watching her, but looked slightly horrified that he said it out loud. She felt heat rise in her cheeks. She had to look away, his eyes were staring and they sat side by side.

He cleared his throat awkwardly.

"So...this ...uh lizard...?" He tried, gesturing at Hephaestus. The lizard turned his eyes at Newt, and made a noise in his throat, almost like he was growling.

"Hephy, be nice." She scolded, with a slight smile.

She picked him up and held him closer to Newt who leaned away slightly. They eyed each other. Evelyn was bitting her bottom lip trying very hard not to giggle.

"I heard it-"

Hephaestus growled again. Newt gulped nervously.

"He? He used to be an actual bettle blade." Newt asked nervously.

Evelyn nodded and placed him on her shoulder. He snuggled into her hair and neck.

"Best Nick and I could come up with, is when I umm..my powers transferred into someone else and he was on my shoulder or lap or something it slowly changed him from machine. It don't know...best we can figure."

Newt's mouth opened and closed a few times clearly at a loss for words. He ran a hand through his hair, pushing it out of his eyes.

"Whoa." He finally managed to get out.

"I don't know how it works Newt. I don't know why I have it, but it also doesn't work like it's supposed to. I know I've helped others with worse injuries, but it drains me to the point I pass out. I know deep down that's not...how it should be."

"But it couldn't help George?" He asked cautiously.

She shook her head. He deflated. Then sat up straight.

"Have you used it on me?" He asked, his tone was a little sharp.

There was no point in lying to him. And she nodded slowly, looking down at her lap.

"When?" He asked rather harshly.

She flinched, but answered his question. It was a valid question.

"The first time you helped me in the garden. I...helped relax the turmoil in side you." She answered quietly.

She chanced a glance at him. He was sitting his back straight, staring blankly into the shadows of the forest.

"Please...Lee, don't do it again." He finally said, and turned back to look at her. "I'm not worth you getting sick, or you draining yourself. If it's anything like what I saw you do to yourself with Nick....I'm not worth that."

She didn't have to touch him to feel the overwhelming sadness coming off him.

"What are you worth then Newt?" She challenged, but her voice was so quiet, it was hardly above a whisper.

He shook his head. "Not much." He muttered bitterly turning his head away.

Those words hit her heart almost harder than when he spat his disgust at her the other night. She actually grabbed her chest, it was hard to breath. She felt the ground teeter under her.

"...Newt..."

Her voice was so thin it floated through the air. He slowly looked at her, blinking a few tears away. His big brown eyes met hers and she saw the sorrow and brokenness, she saw the storm. He was calm right now, possibly the eye of the storm. Her fear for him shot through her so fast her head spun. She reached a shaking hand out and gently brushed the tear off his cheek. His breathing hitched. And she felt a warm tingle in her finger tips that had nothing to do with her powers.

"You are worth it."

"No, Lee.." she gently pressed her fingers over his mouth, stopping him from finishing the sentence.

"No. I don't want to hear those words again. I get to decide when to use my skills, Newt, and how far I push myself. Not you, not Nick not anyone but me." She was quiet but firm.

He slowly raised his hand and wrapped his large hand around her wrist and pulled her hand away. He hadn't looked away. She felt like she was drowning in his melted chocolate eyes, she felt frozen. Her whole body felt warm and tingling, and alive, but she felt a nervousness swirling around in her stomach. She had never been this intimate with someone before. Sure hugs, Nick held her hand, but those boys were brothers. This sandy haired British boy with soft chocolate eyes stired up weird sensations inside her. He twisted his body around now to fully face her.

He used his other hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Slowly he trailed his finger tips down to her jaw line and down her neck. It made her shiver.

"Are you chilly, Love?" The smile he gave her was a mix of a smirk and a nervous grin.

"No." She breathed.

He had let go of her hand and she didn't realize it, only noticing when his other hand came up and cupped her other cheek gently. She swallowed nervously, but her mouth had gone dry. His eyes flicked down from her eyes to her lips and back to her eyes.

"Lee..." His breath fanned her face gently.

"Yeah?" She managed to squeeze out.

"I...I really want to...I want to kiss you..." His voice was rough and soft, strained and calm.

She just managed to nod her her head enough. "Ooh...okay." her voice wasn't even a whisper it was more like a simper.

I sly smirk appeard on his face. He glanced down at her lips again.

"Can...may ...may I?"

"Ya." All she managed to get out.

He leaned closer. She could feel the warmth from him. Her chest heaved. Both his hands gently and nervously cupped her cheeks and jaw. He leaned closer, not taking his eyes off eyes.

He finally closed the distance. Her eyes shot open and then fluttered closed, her lungs forgot to work, but she felt alive. A sensation in her stomach exploded, making her feel tingling and fluttery. Her heart sped up and felt like it was missing beats.

His lips were warm and soft and slightly chapped. The kiss was slow and sweet, gentle and hesitant. She melted into him. Her hands found his chest and clenching his shirt in her fists. She felt a hot and tingling sensation flair up in her and explode through her arms and into her hands.

He slowly pulled away, they were both out of breath, her eyes stayed closed, savouring the tender moment. He didn't pull away far, just enough for them to breath, close enough to share air. Her eyes finally fluttered open. She saw his eyes twinkling in the moonlight.

"..newt..." She whispered, slightly panting.

"Yes...Lee?" He whispered back against her lips. It made them tingle, and goosebumps spread across her arms.

"I'm...I'm sorry....I..I didn't mean for it to happen! I'm sorry!" She choked, panicking now she pulled away, releasing her hands from his shirt she withdrew her still glowing hands from him and brought them tight to her chest.

Still panting slightly he just grinned at her. All wild storm in his eyes were gone.  "I think if I had some buggen' magic I wouldn't be able to control it either after that. Wholly shuck!" his voice was raspy.

He still had her face in his hands, and gently brushed his thumbs against her cheeks. They just sat staring at each other, still slightly flushed and breathing hard. They stayed frozen for a long time. Finally Newt spoke and broke the trans.

"You should sleep, Love. It's been a bloody long day, and you need to rest."

He slowly and reluctantly let go of her face and got to his feet, and held his hands out for her and helped her to her feet. He slid his hand into hers.

"Good bye George. Thank you. For being my friend. I hope you and Jack find each other again." She whispered, before turning to leave.

Together, Newt and Evelyn made their way through the moonlit forest, following a scarring little Hephaestus. He walked her to her hut and at the door he turned to face her.

"Thank you, Lee. For tonight. And...I'm so bloody sorry I was such a slint head."

"I forgive you Newt." She whispered, looking up at him.

He kissed her forehead so gently she hardly felt it.

"Good night Love."

"Good night Newt."

She crawled into bed, and with a ghost of a smile on her lips, she fell asleep
