Chapter 37

This book is dedicated to every one of my readers. I love you all for the support you have shown this humble book and it's crazy nutty author and for your patience as I prepare to move. You guys are the BESTEST!

le Fey's class was brutal and humiliating all at the same time. le Fey had devised a way to punish her for being late and wasting her precious time that was wickedly brilliant on a whole new level.

She devised a timed trial of drawing a tele-glyph in less than a minute. Lauren couldn't even get it partially drawn before her time ran out, but le Fay made her do it over and over again.

You'd think by the end of class she would have gotten marginally better but just the opposite happened. Her arm was so tired from holding it up against the wall that she couldn't stop it from shaking.

Her drawings started looking more and more like a kindergartner had drawn them and le Fay just took the time to criticize her more. She felt like the brunt of everyone's joke by the end of the period.

Angry tears stung her eyes by the end of the class, but she steadfastly refused to give le Fay the satisfaction of seeing her breakdown.

When she looked up from the board and saw Zach staring at her only to see him quickly turn away. It felt like someone had sucker punched her in the gut. He couldn't even give her a small smile or a little bit of encouragement. That was what stung the most. She realized in that moment she really had lost her best friend.

This time when the bell finally rang, she was so mad; she picked up her books and left him in her dust.

Lauren spent the rest of the day seething. She couldn't wait for training. She had some aggression to get out. Lord help whoever they paired her up with to spare against.

She thought I pity the fool and cracked up.

When training rolled around she was itching for a fight and couldn't even relax during meditation.

Long seeming to sense her agitation paired her with the best fighter in their training class a big lanky 5th year Diwata He was a cocky sucker who never lost a fight. Taller than Zach and three times faster than her, on his best day.

She smirked when she thought: oh but this was not his best day.

She began to walk the outskirts of the mat smiling at him devilishly while she went over her knowledge of the species.

They were native to the Philippines. They were strong, excellent fighters, fast and beautiful if she had to be honest. Her opponent had the palest of skin, smooth as silk, and long luscious limbs. He had fair curly hair and his eyes were the crystal blue of a Caspian Sea.

At the end of her examination, she didn't know whether to break his bones or to jump them, that's when she suddenly remembered their seductive tendencies and she smirked to herself.

Let him think he'd ensnared her. Now normally she would be no match for him, but she had never before used her fairy speed during a fight. She was always too afraid to actually hurt her opponents, and truth be told, she was never really that invested in winning, but today was different.

Today she pictured a conglomerate of her mother, le Fay, and Zach standing in front of her instead of the gorgeous specimen that was making her drool – she pinched herself to break free from the spell once again and thought – you're going to pay for that cutie.

Just then in the corner of her eye she caught Zach looking on from his corner of the room and she thought look away jackass and thank your lucky stars it's not you on the mat in front of me right now.

Lauren rolled her hands into fists so hard that her nails bit into her palms and her knuckles turned white.

And she surprised everyone including her opponent when she lunged for him. He moved away, but she hadn't used her fae speed until he tried to avoid her so she was able to quickly grab him by the front of his training suit and flip him using her momentum. She fell back with him in her arms and used the strength of her legs to flip him over her prostrated body and on to the mat. She continued to roll with her momentum and was on her feet in less than a second.

She watched her opponents face change -- He seemed to come to the realization that she wasn't dicking around and he had a rep to protect so the flirty vibes being sent her way disappeared abruptly.

Good she thought the player is no longer playing. Two could play at that game.

She charged forward but misjudged her footing and was rewarded by a swift kick to the ribs which made her spleen squeal.

But she was never more proud of herself than when she landed a kick of her own when he came in for the kill. It must have been a hard one too, because it wiped the self satisfied smirk right off his face.

"Booyah!"

Take that you self satisfied jerk, she bellowed inside her own head as she jogged around the mat on the balls of her feet. No her inner monolog was just for her. She needed to work a few things out and this was surprisingly a great way to do it.

She finished him off with three fast moves. She actually dove forward did a handstand with her back to him grabbed him with her legs around his head and threw him across the mat going with him. She landed with all her weight, inhuman speed and strength on his chest and promptly punched him in the jugular.

The look on his face was priceless when he tapped out.

She got up and bowed to Long and then on a whim she turned and nearly gave Zach the finger. But surprisingly she changed her mind at the last minute when she reminded herself that he wasn't worth it.

She wasn't going to lie though Lilly Allen's Fuck You (Very Much) was playing on repeat in her head as she locked eyes with him before taking a seat on the outskirts of the mat.

CJ high fived her when she sat down and called her a righteous badass.

But now that the adrenalin had worn off she didn't know how she felt about that as she watch the Diwata limp off the mat.

She zoned out for the rest of the class and weapons training was a complete washout too.

In her daze she almost forgot to corner le Fay after her Archery class, but remembered just in time.

For a moment Lauren didn't know how to address le Fay. She was so unfamiliar with pursuing a conversation with her – usually she avoided it like the plague.

Should she call her by her human or magical name? She was thinking decisions, decisions when the decision was taken from her by her abrupt teacher.

"Get to the point child. The sooner I am away from you smelly miscreants the better." She said in a huff.

"I want to ask you if you know why the council formed?"

"Do you wish to ask me or are you asking me?"

Lauren stammer, "I guess I'm asking you?"

"Well then that is different." She said with a cruel smile.

"Well do you? Lauren repeated with more conviction?

"I do." was her haute response.

le Fay was looking down her nose at her like she was a bug that had one too many legs.

"Well can you tell me?" She pleaded.

"No," was her rather ineloquent response.

Lauren couldn't help herself she let out a frustrated growl, "Okaaaayyyyy . . . well thanks for nothing. "

She felt like a complete idiot. What did she think le Fay was going to do? Suddenly grow a heart like the Grinch that stole Christmas and actually start giving a shit.

Furiously, she turned on the ball of her heel and started to follow the other kids out of the gym when le Fay stopped her in her tracks.

"It's not my story to tell. Visit the Ryu's and ask them what happened."

"The Ryu's? Like in Ray's parents?"

"Well look who's not going to be wearing the dunce cap today," le Fay said caustically.

"Now you can thank me by getting the hell out of my sight." Her caustic teacher concluded their conversation the same way she always did with a sneer and a cold shoulder.

Wow! Lauren thought sarcastically as she walked away: She must have got into teaching because of her love of children.

But any resentment she felt for the hateful teacher was soon lost in the excitement she felt over having a strong lead.

Lauren was so please with herself; she did a little dance on the way out of the gym. Now all she'd have to do was convince the Ryu's to tell her everything. She didn't know if it was precognition or just wishful thinking, but she just knew she was on the right track.
