Chapter 28
Xander came back with an elixir that made her invincible for 24 hours. It wouldn't matter how much the waves crashed or threw her around. No matter the force they would not crush her body.
Lauren came back with a spell that allowed her to see in the dark so she would know which way was up or down in the dark water. She also found one to give her the speed to get out of the way if she was heading for rocks.
Brenna came back with a charm that allowed her to breath under water. It was not that Mermaids can't breathe underwater, but there was no way to know if part of her father's wards would prevent her from taking her magical form. So yeah that was the crucial piece of her survival plan.
It was nearly midnight when the kids took to the beach. Dom drove them again, but this time he did less complaining about it. She had to smile when she thought he must be warming up to them.
The Sea Witch was waiting for them near the water her hair flying to the side in the breeze in silky green tendrils like seaweed would float in a strong current. When several of the guys sighed she seconded that emotion she was a sight to behold. In the distance dangling over the water again was poor Cameron in the weird greenish air bubble. She couldn't believe it was possible but he looked even sicker than the day before, but at least he was conscious.
His eyes tracked Megan mournfully. She mouthed I love you and he mouthed it back. That in of itself spoke volume about how he was doing physically. A lucid Cameron would be beside himself with worry and fight tooth and nail to keep her safe. She could only guess that he was barely lucid in the grips of his rejection.
There was a hard lump of fear in her throat, she felt physically ill, her heart was racing and she felt dizzy and weak, her palms were sweaty and she couldn't catch a breath. Her psyche knew she was doing this and her wards were fighting back with everything they had. She had to hope she had the strength to actually get in the water, because she realized now that if the witch had the power to manipulate her into the water in some why she would have done so years ago.
Still, Megan kept walking to the sea witch while staring daggers at the crone as her gang of friends walked behind her. She could only imagine what her friends would do to her if she didn't come out of the water in one piece. She smirked confidently at the magical being feeling like the luckiest girl in the world.
She returned her smile with a sneer and said, "I see you've brought some friends; I wasn't expecting an audience, but the more the merrier, they say, "she sneered.
Megan had nothing to say to the witch. She turned then and hugged each of her friends in turn and when she was done she yelled and I love you to Cameron, who was now pounding soundlessly on the inside of the bubble looking like he was screaming bloody murder. No doubt he was telling her not to do it and to let him die, but the die was cast. She'd made her pact with the devil and it was sink or swim for her – literally.
She stripped off her clothes not caring if anyone saw her naked form. There were so many more things to worry about. Like whether she was going to make it into the water with the weird black dots floating in front of her eyes or if she would just pass, right the fuck out before she got even got a toe wet. Megan tried to slow her breathing and relax, but she knew that wasn't going to happen so she did a mad dash for the surf and dove in before her body could complete shut down in the mother of all panic attacks.
When her body arced up into a dive to cut throw the first wave two things happen: first) the sea came alive and turned into a monster hell bent on taking her life and second) she blacked right out with fear. The dots formed into a solid black wall and she lost all sense of everything. She was powerless to her terror. Then it happened: the magic of the spells took over, she felt it course through her veins, and it woke her from her stupor.
She opened her eyes in her topsy-turvy world to see that her watery prison was now encompassed in a green glow. She could see the sea floor and all its creatures as clearly as if it were a midsummer day thanks to Lauren. If only the sea would just stop spinning her madly like a top and throwing her this way and that she might be able to make heads or tails of where she was. Her hair had come loose as well which wasn't making it any easier.
She clutched at her hair in the deluge to clear her vision but it was too late she saw the rocks just seconds before her body crashed into them. It hurt like a mother but thanks to Knight's elixir when the waved retreated she was still in one piece. But that didn't stop the sea from performing that procedure over and over again. She tried to break free but even with Lauren's spell she was neither fast enough nor strong enough to break from the current.
It seemed like forever and thank god for the charm Brenna had purchased because in her distress Megan was shifting back and forth from her human form to her mermaid one. The sea was relentless, but what did she expect from something as eternal as the tide.
At one point the dolphins had come to help her they threw their bodies in between her and the rocks and she wanted to cry out for them to stop, but the sea had robbed her of her voice. And the waves they just kept coming, she was trapped, trapped in a sea determined to kill her. And it was going to succeed. She barely had any strength left to fight.
That's when it happened. A wave caught her sideways and forced her between two of the biggest boulders she ever saw. She tried to get out and the dolphins were trying to help, but she was jammed so tight she couldn't escape. Panic set in. How long could this go on?
She was being pulled this way and that one of the dolphin in desperation took her wrist in its beak and pulled. It was extremely unfortunate that it was the wrist that held the charm that allowed her to breath underwater and in his exuberance he had ripped it from her wrist.
The pain was immediate. Her chest burned and filled with water. It felt like she swallowed glass each time she tried to breathe and her eyes watered. She closed her mouth to try and stop the intake of the sea, but it was already too late. Her lungs were filled to the brim with fluid. She did everything in her power to try and push the other stone away from her body. She strained with all her might nearly shattering her teeth as she clenched her jaw and screamed. The burning in her chest became unbearable; her vision began to blur fading out at the edges. She tried to push again, but she had nothing left -- her tank was empty. The rocks just would not let her go. This would be her watery grave.
Then she saw him in the inky blackness and her heart soared until she realized that he had just doomed himself by coming to her aid. They were the fairy tale romance, after all; their love would come to a bitter end. Two beautiful sea creatures drowned by the sea -- how ironic.

Cam reached her just before she blacked out and breathed his last breath into her lungs before placing his back against one stone and his feet against the other. He pushed with all his might separating the stones and pulling her free by one arm. She was a limp doll in his grasp and he wanted to scream, but he had to hold the little bit of air he had left in his burning lungs. He fought against the raging sea. He fought with everything he had until he saw the light leave her eyes. He looked at her lifeless eyes and yelled, "NOOOOOOOOOO!" Just before his head crested the surface of a calm shore.
The curse was over it had claimed its victim. As he swam madly to shore the Sea witch greeted them with her maniacal laughter and his friends looked on in anguish. He continued to scream, "NO!" As he pulled her to shore, all of his friends rushed to them to help, but she was gone. He dragged her lifeless form to the sandy shoreline and begged her to breathe as he started CPR.
He worked on her. While his friends argued over what kind of magic they could use to help. Everyone was crying and yelling and screaming, and all the while the crazy bitch cackled like it was the funniest thing she'd ever heard.
"Mother!" a male voice sounding shocked and lost called from across the beach.
"How could you? She's only a child; they both are."
"Stay out of this Malcolm." The sea witch commanded coldly.
"I will not Mother," he pointed to were Cameron worked furiously to bring Megan back and said, "that's my son and your grandchild, you've just destroyed in your bid to get revenge! When will it ever stop? Father is gone and this won't bring him back.
"Don't you even think about speaking about him you disloyal worm!" she shouted at him.
"You have no right to call me mother you lost that right when you refused to help me get revenge on the disgusting humans that killed your father." She pointed at Cameron and said, "and that is no grandchild of mine."
"You lay with that filthy human to create your spawn and they have nothing to do with me!" Her face morphed then into a hideous mask of hate.
I knew you wouldn't listen to me so I brought someone you couldn't ignore.
Just then a near replica of Cameron's father walked across the sand, and even though he was translucent he seemed surprisingly real.
"Maris," He called in a deep resonate voice.
The sea witch looked like she had been stabbed in the chest. But she shook her head empathically and uttered, "No it cannot be. I tried everything to bring him back. This is a trick a ruse to distract me from my goal, but now that it is upon me I will not be swayed. "
"Oh . . . my darling . . . my precious . . . my jewel of the sea, stop this madness." Cam's grandfather entreated.
"My dear sweet Cameron . . . ,"the witch cried before she raced to his arms.
He embraced her fiercely, but drew her away from him and wipe the tears from her face, "Please help the children."
She looked down then at her feet in shame and muttered almost inaudibly, "I cannot. I lied I don't have the power to do the things I promised the girl.
"b-b-ut you made a death oath." Cam's grandfather sputtered.
"Yes and I was ready to die, I am ready to die." She said with tears in her eyes.
Cam cried out then, "Do something!" as he fell back on his haunches. CPR wasn't working.
Cameron senior looked to his evil wife, his broken wife and pleaded, "my dear you command the sea you must be able to do something."
"I can command the sea from her lungs, but nothing else," and she did.
The water in Megan lifeless body started to gurgle and flow out through her mouth in a long languid stream up into the air above her head.
As soon as the last drop bled from her lungs, Cam was on her again breathing his life into her, doing chest compressions and pleading for her to come back to him between breaths.
It was as quiet as the grave on the beach. Everyone seemed to be holding their breath and praying for Megan to show any signs of life, when suddenly from out of the Sea stroll a dark haired blue eyed God.
He was dressed in a tux looking like he'd come from a gala dinner or the opera and he was dry as a bone as he walked from the ocean. He looked like stone, but for the tears that streamed down his face. He walked calmly over to his daughter and scoped her up reverently in his arms. He broke then when he kissed her blue lips and uttered:
"My tiny pearl."
Just then a pod of dolphins beached themselves on the shore at Megan and her father's feet. They whistled and clicked anxiously.
Cameron looked around in shock at his friends and uttered excitedly, "they're offering their lives for hers.
Megan's father nodded his head reverently and sighed when he said, "your sacrifice will not be forgotten."
He turned and walked into the surf with his dead daughter to be followed by the pod. As soon as he was up to his shoulders he submerged Megan in the water and the pod began to circle them. Around and around they swam in a tight circle until a blue glow emanated from there forms.
The glow drifted on the currents towards Megan's father's hand that rested on his daughters unbeating heart. The glow spread from that point out till it encompassed her whole body and she began to rise to the surface and as she did she transformed into a mermaid, but it wasn't her usual transformation.
She had changed. Her tail because opalescent her scales took on all the colors of the rainbow. It sparkled even in the moonlight. It was beautiful and so was she.
And when her friends on the shore saw her tail twitch, they started to cheer and converge on Megan and her father in the water. And be the time they got to her, her eyes were open. They shone a shocking blue for a moment, but went back to normal when she said, "what's up with you guys haven't you ever seen anyone come back from the dead before?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Megan couldn't get out of the water. It felt too good to finally be able to be what she was always meant to be. She splash in the surface while Cameron sat on a rock watching her. She was laying on her stomach with her head in her hands staring at him. He still looked terrible, but he seemed to have it under control.
Mr. Murdoch and her father were talking. Maris and Cameron senior had drifted off down the beach to find a private place for the witch to die. She couldn't believe it when the gang told her that the witch couldn't and never intended to heal Cameron. That was really her last hope. Their last hope.
And she couldn't believe it either that a pod of dolphins had sacrificed themselves for her, right now the remaining dolphins raced around the lagoon formed by the break water leaping and playing and calling to her to join them. She could hear them now: They would forever from this day on have a special connection to her.
"Cameron," she said sadly, "what are we going to do? I can't lose you."
Cameron sighed looking completely exhausted," You won't lose me. I lost you tonight Meg. I thought I'd lost you for good, and I won't do that to you. We'll find a way. I promise."
Mr. Murdoch and her dad came over to them then. She was surprised though when her father addressed Cam and not her.
Mr. Murdoch was holding Cam's red backpack in his hands.
"Cameron, I've just had a talk with your father and we think we might have a solution."
Malcolm took the skin out of Cam's backpack and wrapped it around his son's waist.
"But dad it's useless now. Because of my stupid actions I've rejected it completely there's not enough magic essence in me to ever become a selkie again." Cameron's words hitched giving away his true feelings about his actions.
"It'll be okay son. Just please trust me."
"Cameron your father has agreed to gift you his essence."
"What do you mean?" Cameron looked out at the water to wear the dolphins lay at the bottom of the water, and said, "Absolutely not!"
His father rushed to calm him, saying, "It wouldn't be like that son. I'd just be giving up my immortality. I'd have a normal lifespan with you and your mother. Trust me son I've lived long enough."
"O-only if you're sure," Cameron stammered.
Megan's father cupped his hands on either side of Cameron's and his father's head and began to chant in ancient Welsh.
Megan watched the seal skin glow a florescent green and power flow from Mr. Murdoch to Cam, and when it was done Cam's father had a spattering of gray hair at his temples and crowsfeet at the edge of his eyes. He also sported the biggest grin she'd ever seen on his face.
But Cam looked defeated when he said, "I'm sorry Dad. I'm sorry, I made you give up your immortality. "
He father reached out and clutched his shoulder giving it a squeeze, saying," No son, if I had known this was an option, I would have done this years ago. Do you think I could live an interminable existence without your mother or you children? To what? End up a husk of a being like my mother? No son, you've saved me. Now we can find a solution for your sisters together.
They hugged each other then, excitedly smacking each other on the back as guys are prone to do.
But her father spoke and broke up the happy moment, "I can do nothing about your addiction or the addiction of all the other halfbloods, but I've been made to understand that you are a gifted alchemist, So you must find a solution, because your yearnings will never go away. It will only get worse with time."
"Take care of my daughter young man, I wish you the best of luck," and her father reached out to touch her face lovingly before he walked back into the sea like he had never been there.
Tears of joy streamed down her face as she thought fuck she was a crier after all, and she laughed as she pulled Cameron in the water with her.
The sea was there's now, just as much as she was his and he was hers.
The End.
