Chapter 26

The next day after training the entire crew met at the library to search the stacks; hoping to find that one perfect solution to their magical conundrum, and even with Lauren's ability and hours of searching they had to admit that, if the solution even existed; they had no clue how to find it.

They even went to Clio who said that there were texts on pretty much everything in the library, but she wouldn't know specifically if there was any mention of scrying without being in possession of the item being used.

She even went through the stacks herself and brought back volumes of texts on the subject, but none of them would work. Either they required elaborate rituals or ceremonies and required blood sacrifices or the body parts of mystical being like unicorn horns or manticore wings.

Lauren flatly refused to kill anything -- man or creature. So it was back to the drawing board.

It was nearly ten pm when they finally had to call it. There wasn't a solution to be found and they all had to agree that not even magic can be counted on to always make the impossible possible.

They were all sitting around the tables feeling hopeless when Lauren made an announcement, "Guys, she sighed," I need to go to le Fay. It's the only way."

Zach objected right away," Lauren that won't work she'd the guardian of the Isle she'll never tell us where it is."

"Oh you're right about that Zach, but that's not what I'm going to see her about."

Everyone turned to look at her with puzzled expressions. While Donnie thought if she wasn't going to her about the Isle then why? But he didn't have to wonder for long his question was promptly answered with her next statement.

"I'm going to ask her if she knows how to scry an item without possessing the item yourself but alternatively with an item that someone else has on their person and more importantly if it can be done without mutilating anything."

"I can come along too and use my ability to make people tell the truth," Zach offered.

"Well if it will make her at least slightly less hateful that would be a bonus." Lauren said with a chuckle.

Kelly got up then and straightened her skirt saying, "I think all ya'll are crazier than a Bessie bug. Ya'll can count me out of this nonsense. Later." And she grabbed her purse and promptly left.

Donnie wasn't the only one to notice she'd left someone behind. Xander sat by himself on the other side of the library. Donnie had been trying to ignore the two all night – there was only so much his broken heart could take – but in his endeavors to ignore the two, he had evidently missed the fact that they hadn't even sat together. And then it struck him.

Xander and Kelly's on and again and off again relationship must be off again. And he had to admit he wasn't a very good person even before he smiled happily.

He spoke up then before everyone else could make their excuses and go, "Lauren and Zach, I wish to go with you too." He didn't know why he was insisting to go, but sometime a Cait just has to trust his instincts.

"Sure," Lauren said as she patted him on the shoulder, "it makes perfect sense for us to ask about the spell as a group after all there's safety in numbers. I'm not kidding myself that she'll be helpful but we might accidently drop a clue that will send us in the right direction."

Zach stood up to grab his hoody off the back of his chair and pulling it over his head, as he said in a muffled voice, "I think that's a great idea then if she doesn't tell us, we at least have something else to go on."

"I have her for second period for Trig on Monday I'll ask if there's a good time to swing by with some questions as my mentor she can't say no." Lauren tucked Zach's clothing tag in as she reached over to grab her purse.

Donnie noticed Zach give an involuntary shiver at her touch and it made him wonder when he was going to realize they were perfect for each other. She obviously liked him too, but if he didn't go for it soon she would move on and probably start dating Quinn.

Quinn made no secret about how he felt about her, but she wouldn't say yes to him, because she was holding on to hope that their fearless leader would 'grow a pair' as they say here in America and admit how he feels.

And he thought his situation with Kelly was messed up. Lauren must know that if she decides between the two she's breaking one or the other's heart, but in not deciding she will inevitably break her own.

Donnie looked over at Xander who was still sitting in his chair scrolling through his phone. He didn't even look torn up about the breakup. Which made him wish he was in the same boat as the unlucky threesome -- at least if Kelly liked them both, he'd have a chance to win her heart.

Donnie was shocked out of his revelry by a tiny hand that waved in front of his face, and when he heard Lauren say, "Earth to Donnie HELLLOOO anybody home?"

He jumped a little, and said, "HUH," which made both Zach and Lauren laugh good-naturedly.

"I was just saying that I'll let you guys know at lunch what time le Fay agrees to meet us. How does that sound?"

"Oh okay that sounds good." Donnie said still feeling a bit out of it. Sometime his ADD like symptoms took over and left him needing to get away from the crowd and just drift away inside his own head for awhile.

"See you tomorrow. "

He waved to his friends about to leave when Lauren said, "Donnie aren't you forgetting something?"

For a second he didn't know what she was talking about then he remembered she was essentially his ride and he laughed despite himself.

Lauren said goodbye to Zach and opened a portal to take them to her place. He would be staying there tonight it would seem. He wished he was back at Kelly's, not only because he hated being moved around each night, but because he missed his Southern Bella.

On Monday at lunch Lauren told them that le Fay agreed to meet them after training in her class room on the magical side of the school. Lauren had informed them as well that their caustic teacher had insisted that they shower thoroughly prior to the appointment or they might as well not show up.

So Donnie took the time to wash away all signs of their strenuous training session. Knight had been especially tough on them today which made him wonder if he'd figured out he'd been manipulated by Zach. And by the number of times Zach face had met the mat during their sparing sessions he would have to say yes.

Either that or he just hated to be reminded of the past and frankly, who could blame him, he certainly had a lot of it. By his calculations Knight was nearly fifteen centuries old and he would live for centuries more. It was his punishment for going after the grail and immortality.

Which brings to mind the old adage: be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

The angels had given him what he sought, but before they did they showed him what he had given up. They showed him heaven in all its glory. They showed him true bliss – no more suffering or illness, no death.

Sir Galahad would never die, but that didn't mean death wasn't his constant companion. He would forever have to watch anyone he dared to love or grow close to leave him as even the longest living mystical beings or magical creatures were not given any guaranty of an endless life.

The angels had rejected him that day, and it was crazy to think that even if there was a mass extinction event, and it wiped out all life on planet earth, he would remain.

Forever and eternity turned out to be his curse.

When Donnie's hot water turned ice cold he realized he had drifted away again and he quickly turned the knob counter clockwise and exited the stall to towel himself off and throw on a pair of clean clothes.

When he finally left the change room he saw Zach and Lauren standing together laughing and chatting and he was struck once again by how great they were together and he hoped they made it -- he really did.

He walked up on them and said with a smile, "Last chance to back out if you no want to go."

They both chuckled nervously but Zach said, "Not a chance, we're going to find that scabbard and get you your life back." Then he threw his arm around Donnie's shoulder and walked him toward the exit to the magical training gym, as he said, "Besides I can't wait to try out my Vulcan mind meld with the most powerful druid on the planet."

The three of them sat together awkwardly, nervously fidgeting in front a hawkish le Fay. She was perched on the front of her desk looking down at them menacingly with her arms folded over her chest. Donnie kept throwing furtive glances at Zach, waiting for his affinity to kick in, but apparently the druid's powers were too great.

Every time he looked at Zach the poor guy looked more and more like he'd eaten something that didn't agree with him and le Fay looked no worse for wear. Finally Zach let out a whoosh of air and sagged in his desk while le Fay gave him a look that said nice try.

Lauren drew le Fay's attention back to the matter at hand when she said, "As I was saying I've been working on a new spell and I'm stumped."

le fay made a circular hand gesture to her to encourage her to move it along. She had already warned them to make it quick when they'd entered the room.

Lauren faltered a bit over being hurried, but she steadfastly continued, "Like I said before I'm working on a locator spell that doesn't require the object that was once part of the whole to be in your possession but only in proximity."

"Do you mean something symbolic, or even something more concrete or biological like hair for example? Be specific child."

Lauren made up an example and Donnie marveled at her quick thinking, "Let's say for example that I wanted to find a hidden box and the box is locked with key and the key is in the possession of another, that person let's say wears it around their neck every day on a chain. Is it possible to scry the box just by being within close proximity to the key? I mean while it is still in the possession of the wearer?"

"Yes of course," Le Fay said matter-of-factly, but said nothing else.

Lauren faced split into a wide grin and she asked," Well how would you do it?"

le Fay looked down her nose at Lauren and said with her crisp British accent, "That depends on whether there is really a box ,and if you are willing to kill for your query."

Her words wiped Lauren's smile right off her face, but she asked anyway, "Are you sure there's no other way?"

"Well only as certain as I am that the sun will arise tomorrow." She laughed cruelly at her own joke, but the kids just cringed.

When Lauren's shoulder sagged Donnie had to admit they were out of luck. They wouldn't be able to scry for Excalibur.

He jumped in to ask the next question on their minds somehow knowing that it was more plausible for him to be asking an impertinent question than Zach or Lauren.

"Madame le Fay we work on a paper for magical history, si. It is about Excalibur".

Her eyes went wide at the mention of the ancient sword, but her shocked expression was instantly replaced by her usual stony countenance.

Donnie continued nervously, but when she fixed him with a dead eye stare a shiver ran down his spine making him hurry to explain," When I research, I discover that it was given to the Lady of the Lake after Arthur die, but to my knowledge the Lake it is on Avalon, no?

He paused for emphasis to say, "What I ask is this: Avalon is it one of the Canary Islands or is it an island off of Wales. I suspect it is Wales, I am right, yes?"

"What does it matter? The Island is cloaked never to be found by anyone who doesn't have a right to be there?"

"Oh it does no matter I only think it is . . . how you say . . . absurd to think it would be so far south from the people who worshipped there."

"I tell Zach he is crazy to believe those who think it is near Spain."

Donnie gave Zach a pointed look and hoped he caught on. Now was the time to hit her with his best shot.

Zach closed his eyes and sucked in a huge breath and held it deep in his lungs.

le Fay reared back from her stiff stance above them and tittered a bit before she said, "Well you're right it would be absurd to think it is part of the Canaries, as Annwn has always been the afterworld of the Welsh."

She shook her head then seeming to dispel Zach's work and stood up to cross the room and open her door gesturing out the way they came in," Now if you'll excuse me, I spend enough time in this heinous place without having to spend even more sitting answering copious questions after school.

The kids stood up and piled out of the class together.

Lauren was practically beaming when she closed the door, but Zach was looking slightly less happy and extremely ill.

As for him, he didn't know what to think, until Lauren started celebrating silently.

Zach fairly whispered to her, "I don't know what meeting you were in, but I don't know why you're celebrating, she never told us where Avalon is?"

"Oh yes she did," Lauren laughed excitedly.

"Didn't you hear?" she continued, addressing both Zach and him. "She equated Annwn with Avalon and pretty much said it was the domain of the Welsh, therefore it must be in the Welsh Sea."Lauren practically crowed.

"I still don't see why you're so happy, it's not like she told us exactly where it is and with it cloaked in the mist we'll never find it. We're done."

"I think you're forgetting something important Zach." Lauren smirked.

"Oh yeah what's that?" Zach replied.

"We happen to have an ace in the hole. There is one person that happens to know absolutely everything about the Welsh Sea and we just happen to be good friends with his daughter."

Zach stopped in his tracks astounded and exclaimed, "Lauren you're a genius!"

While she laughed and said, "Duh what was your first clue?"

Clever Lauren. Very, very clever.

I wonder how they will convince Dylan the God of the Welsh Sea to tell them.

Tune in tomorrow to find out.
