Chapter 26
As he awkwardly attempted to move his long limbs to the music he had a moment to look around. He could see that almost all the teachers had come and were milling around the refreshment table and talking amicably in small clusters of three and four. He noticed too now the council guard strategically placed around the room. He even saw Gruff 1 and Gruffer 2, his escorts from the night of his enlightenment, near the dais on guard duty for the dignitaries. They looked like they were talking to each other from across the room and he didn't know how they could hear until he thought, strike that, of course he knew how -- Magic
Magic was everywhere. The band had no microphones or amplifiers yet every note played could probably be heard blocks away if not for the noise cancelling magical tent, the light show that illuminated their space wasn't created by any earthly thing, he knew of, that was for sure, and the mist that hung around the base of the dance floor was not made by any smoke machine either.
There was magic in the air everywhere, and it felt heady. The crowd on the dance floor was being enthralled by the music. Literally enthralled. The musicians played strange instruments he'd never seen before -- with a beat that was hypnotic and primal and made the crowd undulate and writhe to the music in unison.
Yeah definitely some magic in the music as well.
He leaned into Lauren to ask about the band.
"She yelled up at him, "They're an all demon band named Pandemonium. Isn't that cool? There instruments are ancient things like; Scottish drums, Irish pin whistles, medieval mandolin, there's even a hurdy-gurdy. That's that thing over there that looks like a medieval torture device."
"Marley usually plays with the band but she's taken the night off to attend the party."
It turned out that just that combination of instruments gave the band a thrash metal Celtic sound that was really intriguing and made you want to never sit down. They danced it seemed for hours until Zach had had enough.
"Come on Lauren I'm starving can't we hit the buffet?" he pleaded.
"Me too," Quinn added.
"All right but remember don't touch anything unless I taste it first."
"Okay," they agreed as they took off like a shot for the crowded table which they noticed never seemed to get less full from people or food.
He noticed in awe that if you took one of something there was another there to take its place.
"I have got to get me one of these," Quinn announced excitedly.
"Count me in Brother," Zach joked as he slapped him on the back nearly choking him.
Lauren just rolled her eyes.
As soon as Lauren gave anything the-all-clear, he and Quinn stuffed it unceremoniously into their mouths and laughed when Lauren gave them a disgusted look.
He couldn't help himself everything looked so good and tasted even better.
Zach looked around again between mouthfuls and noticed that there seemed to be nearly twice as many students here then were in his training class.
He bent down to Lauren's ear to ask her, "Where did the other kids come from."
Lauren just gave him a perplexed look and asked, "What do you mean?"
Zach pointed then to a cluster of five kids on the other side of the dance floor that were standing around and not dancing. They wore full face masks in the shape of the Greek tragedies." I mean those guys and the other guys and the other fifty or so guys on the dance floor I've never seen before."
Lauren brow furrowed as she studied the scene and realized that he was right, so when a fourth year student passed by she hooked her arm and yelled, "who're the other kids over there. "
Zach couldn't hear what the slight girl with the light brown hair cut in a bob said, but they seemed to converse for a long time.
Lauren turned to him with eyes as big as saucers and yelled excitedly in his ear, "Zach you've got to hear this! This is Delphi. She's one grade above us and is the resident oracle at the school"
"Delphi this is Zach my . . . friend," Lauren finished awkwardly.
"Hey," Delphi yelled but not before looking him up and down appreciatively.
"Well I'll tell you what I told Lauren. They're the night school students."
Zach was shocked to hear there was a night school and turned to ask Lauren, "Did you know about this?"
"No," she said, "this is the first I'm hearing about it. Apparently it has existed as long as our school has. It's like they're attending night school or something, right in this very school. They even have entirely different teachers as well."
"How could I not have known this," Lauren said in disbelief.
Zach turned to Delphi and asked, "Why don't they just attend school with us."
"Oh there's a simple explanation for that, "Lauren began, "They're turned creatures or night creatures."
"When he looked confused she continued, "newly turned vampires, werewolves who are dangerous on the nights of the full moon, and other magic creatures that are nocturnal and only come out at night attend the night school."
"Take those guys for example," she pointed at the cluster of five that he had noticed earlier, "the white haired guy is an Icelandic Ice Elemental, the red hair girl standing next to him is a Xaphan Demon, the little Filipina girl is an Aswang, The guy standing next to her is a Dogir which is a kind of Nubian Jackal shifter and the really good looking African American guy with the hot bod standing next to him is a half dryad/half Tuatha dé Dadaan Fae."
Lauren sucked in a breath at the news, "OMG he's just like me I'm that kind of Fae," she said excitedly.
"Why is he in the night school? I mean I don't have to go there."
Delphi lowered he hand held mask and closed her eyes and it was in that moment that Zach noticed her eyes were shadowed with a grey film and he realized that she was blind.
He looked at Lauren and she mouth," tell you later."
"Sorry I can't seem to read him I must have had too much ambrosia." She said with a bewildered shake of her head.
"Wow," Lauren said, "that never happens."
"I know right." She said with a shrug of her shoulders," but if I'm not getting anything from him it can't be important."
"Look I got to run my squad is waving to me from the dance floor."
As she walked away Zach asked incredulously, "how could she have seen that; she's blind, right?"
"Zach Delphi is a halfblood descendant of Tiresias a mystical seer from ancient Rome that was blinded by Hera when he refused to use his sight to inform on Zeus. In her rage she blinded him and all his descendants. Even Zeus could not stop her or reverse her curse so he gave him and his descendants the gift of Foresight. "
"How does that make her see?" Zach asked.
"It means that even though his descendants are born blind; they can still see through the spirit realm, but since Delphi was a halfblood she didn't get that gift until she became Enlightened. That's why when she is in the human half of the school she walks with her cane, because to them she should still be blind."
Zach 's mind was blown. He thought he had a rough awakening to the magical world; he couldn't even imagine what it was like for her.
Zach was so engrossed in what Lauren was telling him that he must have jumped a mile high when Kyle snuck up behind him and slapped him on the back.
He spun around to see that his entire homeroom class had joined them at the buffet table.
Cam was paired up with Meg no surprise there. They even looked like they'd coordinated their outfits in blue silk and suede. Marley and Liv stood to the side - Liv in a red dress that draped her body so perfectly that it would make a sculptor cry and Marley in a black punk goth creation that seemed to suit her personality to a tee. They looked great together.
But Kelly and Xander stole the show. He was in a luxurious purple suede tux. Which should have been ridiculous, but wasn't. The jacket was brocaded in black silk to match the strips of black that Kelly wore. And when he meant strips; he meant strips. That was all they were. There was probably not enough clothe there to swaddle a new born.
Lauren reached over and hooked her finger under his chin to close his gaping mouth, and rolled her eyes again.
Connor was standing at a safe distance, directly behind Brenna, in black leather pants and a silk collarless top looking like he'd simultaneous made no effort and at the same time walked off the cover of GQ. Brenna was wearing a long silk dark brown gown that really showed off her dark skin.
Donnie was dressed in what he thought was the most current Italian cut tux and Ryan in a all silk tux stood next to him fidgeting nervously, while his eyes darting back and forth following a hot Si'lat Jiniri across the dance floor.
Zach had to wonder how Trav found one in his size but he and Kyle looked pretty sharp in the nearly matching suits.
That only left one more person Zach thought when his eyes searched the dance floor he found CJ still there and dancing with three girls. That guy exuded confidence on a whole other level.
They clustered in a neat little circle drinking their ambrosia punch. Lauren uttered a spell under her breath so that the music would not be too loud to hear each other.
"Wow did you guys see the Fairies," Quinn asked excitedly?
"Brah I know," Kyle said mournfully around a mouthful of sweets, "I thought I was going to get an eyeful of some hot fairy princess, but brah that chick is scary."
"What's the deal with them anyway" Connor asked?
Meg spoke up. "The lady elf is a Svartálfar and the guy is a Dökkálfar. They're both dark Nordic elves. They've come here as a sort of an engagement party."
"Yeah," Lauren said, "Their tribes have been warring with each other for centuries and their families are brokering a truce by marrying them off."
Cam asked, "but why are they here? I thought fullbloods didn't give a shit about us."
"They don't. I have it on good authority that there here to sign the peace treaty with the council." Xander added, "at least that's the rumor."
"I know, I've heard the betrothed hate each other, but it doesn't matter they've been ordered by the council to make peace." Kelly said coolly while examining her cuticles.
Zach chuckled to himself when he thought that's the first time the stuck up beauty queen ever deigned to speak to them. She probably did it just because Xander did it first.
"That sucks, "Brenna interjected, "I hear the wedding will be held during the Yule tide. Urgh Merry friggin Christmas."
Zach chimed in with his best Jon Snow impression, "Winter is coming," and in Varys' voice he said, "Sounds like they're all competing for the Iron Throne."
Hardly, "Lauren snorted, "Seeing that it would kill them."
" Zach iron's deadly to the Fae. Lots of man made things are. Didn't you wonder why they're sitting up there on moss and we're all wearing natural fibers. They would find it very uncomfortable to be in the same room with us if we were all wearing polyester."
CJ having just joined them from the dance floor, barked a laugh and said, "I would feel very uncomfortable here too if we were all wearing polyester. "He chuckled to himself as Kyle snorted at his lame ass humor.
"Hey what are we talking about by the way?" he asked.
"The Nordic Fae," Liv informed him as she wrapped her arms around Marley.
"Yeah and why they're here." Marley said with a smile.
"We know why they're in San Fran but why here, here. Like here at the dance?" Ray asked.
"It's simple really; it's politics. If the council can make them come to a lowly dance it proves that they've been cowed and are no threat to them," Lauren suggested.
"Mio Dio, the council is a like the mafia si?"
Travis sighed and agreed, "Just like it, actually. "
"I've suddenly lost my appetite," Meg said, "who wants to see if they can keep up with me on the dance floor? "
There was a chorus of me's as everyone hit the floor.
Stay tuned. . . because you're going to want to be around for the next update! Trust me.
