Chapter 23

Donnie went back to school on Monday having spent an awkward Sunday with Kelly. She had come with him to school yesterday but she had made sure once they were surrounded by the protective walls of the school she was anywhere he wasn't.

At the end of the day when he'd ported back to her apartment he found a sandwich for him in the protective circle with a note that read: 'I'm sleeping on the couch meow if you need me'.

He'd eaten the sandwich and drank the glass of milk but it stuck in his throat going down. All he wanted to do was make things right, but he knew if he tried to force it, it might drive a wedge between them for good.

He hoped Kyle could help him think of something that would make her truly happy. He knew his gift only worked on giving the person he touched what he or she wanted but, that's all he truly wanted in life right now. So it should work.

He intended on asking him at lunch if he could help. He spent his morning classes not paying much attention. He didn't do very well in school. He had a significant case of what his previous school had thought was ADD, but what he knew now had everything to do with his inherited magical traits.

His attention span sucked. He could be distracted by the littlest thing. And then at other times he would become hyper focused on something else and inevitably he would be lost sometimes for the entire class. Literally the bell for the next class would ring and it would be like someone woke him from a deep sleep or trance like state, and then he'd realize he'd missed out on everything the teacher had said.

He knew for a fact that was a cat thing. Since getting to know his younger and older cousins, the only Cait's he'd ever met, he'd witnessed this behavior in them as well which made him wonder if his human side ever stood a chance. Was he always mostly Cait?

When the bell rang he woke from his reverie to realize he'd done it AGAIN.

Grabbing his books off the table he headed for his locker to put them away and made his way to the cafeteria. On the way there he ran into Kyle and quickly pulled him aside.

The tall blonde Norse demigod of prosperity and wealth-bestowal complained noisily. He and Travis were being raised in a raw vegan household and heaven forbid anyone get in their way of crappy food. They lived for the stuff and the school cafeteria was one of their main sources of sustenance.

"Ahhh . . . Brah can't you talk while we eat?"Kyle looked over Donnie's shoulder anxiously watching the other kids being served Monday's special.

"No sorry it is private. I must ask you away from the others." Donnie explained.

"Okay ask it quick, I want to catch up with Trav if I'm with him Gladys always gives me more too."

Donnie thought he'd better make it quick Kyle was almost dancing now. He was bouncing back and forth from foot to foot which made him wonder if Kyle's foster parents were starving the two halfbloods, but probably not, he'd met them before and they seemed nice enough . . .

Kyle whined again and said, "Ahhhh come on . . . earth to Donnie . . . am I losing you here?"

Donnie jolted back to the moment, "Oh sorry Kyle your moves they distract me. I have a favor to ask you. Please you give me what I most need."

Donne held out his hand towards Kyle relieved when Kyle didn't pry into why he needed something so desperately, but instead said, "Sure Brah anytime."

Kyle cocked his head to the side and gestured for Donnie to follow him behind one of the cafeteria's giant pillar and away from prying eyes. He cupped his upturned hand once they were out of sight and blurted out, "Alakazam. "

And when he removed his hands theatrically Donnie saw what lay in his hands and smiled. It was perfect; now to compose the perfect note and he knew just who to go to for help with that.

Just then the smartest girl in his year rounded the corner and he thought speak of the Diavolo and Diavolo does appear.

He called out before she could get away, "Lauren you have a moment? I need to . . . how you say it . . . oh yeah . . . pick your brains."

Donnie stood at Kelly's locker nervously looking around, now that he was here for some reason he was suddenly second guessing himself. He wanted to make her happy, but what if he just made everything worse?

Well he had come this far and there was no going back. He'd included two of his friends in his plan, and even though he had sworn them to secrecy he knew they would hound him to find out how it had worked out. So he thought in for a penny in for a pound, before he pushed the envelope into one of the little slots on the outside of her locker door.

He had written the letter and Lauren had helped him with his grammar. He wanted it to be perfect and he knew that sometimes he tended to get his words wrong. The last thing he wanted was for her to read what he wrote and completely misconstrue what he'd said.

Inside the white envelope with Cara written on the front was a pair of Luke Bryan concert tickets and a note that read:

My beautiful warrior,

I hope to be the one you choose to share this extraordinary night with, but feel free to give the extra ticket to whomever you want. Just please promise me that you will finally let that beautiful hair down.

Donovan Alfero

Donnie walked away from the locker with a smile on his face and a knot in his stomach. Lord knew how he was going to eat with the butterflies in his digestive track, but eat he must. When you are living on the run you need to take the opportunity to eat when it presents itself.

When he rounded the corner of the cafeteria to get in line he looked over at their table to try and see what Kelly was up to, but when he finally found her in his circle of friends it felt like someone had wrenched his stomach right out of his body. Kelly was all over Xander and he wasn't pushing her away. She was laughing at something he said and playing with his hair and Donnie didn't know what to think.

For a moment he saw red and then remembered the note and all he wanted to do was bang his head repeatedly against one of the giant pillars. Oh he was such an idiot. She'd probably laugh at what he'd written and show it to Xan so he could too.

Donnie turned on his heel and walked away, feeling lower than he had ever felt before; his appetite completely gone.

'Well,' he thought dejectedly, 'I hope Xander likes Luke Bryan'.

That afternoon in training Kelly walked up to him before meditation, and handing the envelope to him with a sneer, she said, "Nice try! I don't let guys mess with my head anymore," before walking away.

He just stood there dumbstruck his mouth agape, having no clue what 'Nice try' meant or how he'd 'messed' with her head. He searched his English vernacular in his head to try and discern if it was a lost in translation moment, but nothing jogged loose. No matter how hard he shook that tree.

She had ripped his heart out at lunch and now she had just taken the time to stomp on it.

What did that mean for later today? Would he be porting to her place later or not? She said on Sunday morning he could still stay, but did her actions today mean that she'd changed her mind? Never in a million years was he ever going to understand his bella guerriera.

Nope, he'd have to ask Lauren if he could stay with her until they retrieved the scabbard. He might not understand women, but he knew when he wasn't wanted and didn't that just suck.

Welp Donnie's brokenhearted.

What do you think is up with Kelly?

Why the sudden change of heart.

Tune in tomorrow to find out.
