Chapter 68

Anti's POV

Upon hearing the clock tower strike noon, the three of us froze. I heard Dark mutter a quick, "Shit," while Felix and I stared at the door.

Felix spun around to face us. "J-Just because he was supposed to be executed at noon, doesn't mean we don't still have time! I'm going to run out there and be a distraction, so you two get ready to rescue Percy, understood?"

Felix didn't wait for a response. He turned back around and swung the door open before sprinting out into the courtyard at full speed.

Dark and I stared off after him. I sighed and shook my hands. "Alright, so we just need to find Percy and wait for Felix to do his thing, right?"

Dark blinked. "Um, yeah, that's what I recall."

I took a deep breath before taking a step toward the door and peeking through it. Felix was standing in the middle of the courtyard, surrounded by knights, guards, and citizens, all of which were dead silent. He had his arms outstretched and seemed to be attempting to think of how to explain everything.

I noticed that the demons in the courtyard had already been circled around something before Felix had run out there. I squinted my eyes and peered between demons to try to see what I already knew was there.

One demon shifted his body and sure enough, I saw Percy.

The demons surrounding Percy began to walk away from him to face Felix, who still hadn't uttered a word. Once the last of them had moved, I got a clear visual of Percy. His neck was tied in a rope noose as he stood on a gallows. His hands were tied together behind his back. Upon squinting, I noticed that his eyes were red and he had tear streaks on his dirt covered face. He was staring at Felix in shock, but with a glint of hope in his eyes, as if his prayers had just been answered.

I couldn't help the wide smile forming on my face as I stared at the thirteen year old, about to be killed, who had kept a bit of faith in his friends. The boy who seemed as if he had stayed strong, however hard that might have been, while he was gossiped about, teased, and accused of doing so many things he never would have thought of.

I let out a short chuckle as I realized how similar I was to the poor boy. I hadn't even noticed the tears dripping down my face until Dark asked, "Are you crying?"

Despite being accused of such a thing, I simply smiled and turned to face him. "Once Felix starts talking, we need to go."

Dark smirked at my tear stricken face, but didn't comment on it. "I honestly think Felix is distracting everyone as best he can right now. Should we just wing it?"

I shook my head, wiped away a few tears, and turned back to the door. "Let's wait for Felix to start talking. We need all the attention to be on him so that we can sneak in. We should probably start thinking of ways to get Percy out, though."

Dark nodded, then frowned. "Percy's in the middle of the courtyard and Felix is right in front of him. Everyone's facing Percy right now. How the hell are we supposed to sneak him out without being seen?"

I clenched my jaw. "We really didn't think this plan through at all."

Dark sighed, but before he had the chance to say anything, Felix started speaking, "Uh, hi?"

The citizens in the crowd gasped, as if they thought they were imagining him. The guards and knights seemed clueless as of what to do.

"I guess it's a bit surprising to see me," Felix continued, "but I'm pretty sure the citizens are more concerned with why I look the way I do. To start this off, my father has kept me locked up in my bedroom for the past three months. He was also the one who sentenced Percy to death. These two orders were the last he gave before disappearing without a trace."

The citizens began murmuring amongst themselves. Some of the knights and guards seemed to be considering how to remove Felix from the courtyard without arousing any more suspicion. Others were smiling, seeming proud of Felix for escaping.

I frowned as a realization hit me. Felix mentioned that he had found his door unlocked today. All of the guards and knights seemed completely shocked by his appearance.

So who unlocked his door?

"To add, a lot of what you all have heard has been one big lie. For instance, Anti and Dark being kicked out of the castle." He paused. "I'm actually not sure if the citizens heard a reason for this or not, but nonetheless, I'm going to explain. A rumor got around that my two best friends were going to attempt to murder me in order to obtain the throne. This, of course, has been proven to be a lie. I'm not sure what reasons someone had for getting my two best friends kicked out of the castle, but I know for certain that it was a bad idea to mess with them."

Felix briefly glanced over to me and Dark, grinning. "Those two are complete badasses and whoever got them kicked out better be prepared to lose a few teeth."

One guard snorted, earning glares from several knights. Another guard, who I recognized as PJ, looked as if he was about to jump in the air cheering.

Dark elbowed me. "That's PJ."

I turned to face Dark. "And?"

"PJ knows us! He's our friend. He'll help us get Percy, won't he?"

I stared blankly at him. "Probably, but how are we supposed to get him to help us?"

Dark smirked. "You know how Dan and Phil are always flinging cereal at each other?"

I grimaced. "Yes, why?"

"I'll be right back."

Before I had the chance to ask where the heck he was going, Dark turned and darted away from the courtyard. I sighed and muttered, "He better not bring a plastic spoon and box of cereal."

I directed my attention back to Felix. "To continue this explanation, I've heard an awful lot about those 'intimidating' humans who have made an appearance recently. Don't worry, they aren't here to destroy us or whatever else you've heard. Based off of my knowledge of them, they're nice, funny, and really just want to get back to their world. Don't antagonize them or feel threatened by them. Be a bit more focused on helping them, would you?"

At this, the crowd fell silent. Even PJ seemed slightly taken aback. The first noise was a citizen asking, in a very confused tone of voice, "Aren't humans our mortal enemies or something?"

Felix grinned. "If our human version dies, we die, too. That's just basic knowledge. We shouldn't be enemies with the humans when we all share that bond to them. In my opinion, allies seems a bit more like the correct term."

I smiled as the crowd seemed to have realized this. Everyone, except for a few knights, was smiling brightly.

I heard someone running toward me and turned around to find Dark panting. He straightened up and held out his hand, showing me a plastic spoon.

I sighed, "Please don't tell me we're flinging cereal at PJ."

Dark sent me a confused look. "I'm pretty sure cereal wouldn't make it that far."

I paused. "Then why do you have a plastic spoon?"

Dark grinned as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a bag of rocks. "So that we can launch something that'll actually hit him."

He set the bag of rocks on the ground and opened it up. I tilted my head at him. "Where'd you find those rocks?"

He shrugged. "I was just looking for something heavy and noticed that a vase filled with rocks was in the hallway. When I grabbed the plastic spoon from the kitchen, I grabbed a plastic bag, too." He sprung off the ground and placed a small rock on the spoon. "Alright, which of us has better aim?"

I stared at him in disbelief. "You're the police officer! Shouldn't you be the one with better aim?"

"I don't shoot bullets from a plastic spoon, moron. I've seen you fling cereal from these with Dan and Phil, and assumed that you'd have better aim with one since you've practiced."

I sighed and held my hand out. Dark grinned and placed it in my hand. I turned back to the door and peered through it.

Once I'd located PJ, I pulled the top of the spoon back slightly. I reached my arm through the small opening and aimed. I released the top of the spoon and sent the rock flying through the courtyard.

Dark leaned over to watch as the rock hit PJ's neck. He straightened up, tilted his head back to face us, and let his jaw drop as he saw us.
