Chapter 60
Mark's POV
I'm not completely sure what I had expected the king's castle to look like. A giant wall enclosing it? Thousands of knights defending it? Enormous, bleak towers?
I was looking at almost the complete opposite when Dark announced that we had arrived.
"Wait, this is it?" Jack asked, clearly as confused as I was.
The king's 'castle' was a simple, white picket fence house out in the middle of the country. Dark had pulled into the driveway. Looking around, I almost thought we were on a farm.
"What? Not what you expected?" Dan replied, smirking slightly.
"No offense," I started, "but if the king's castle is a farmhouse, why didn't you break in sooner? Also, why did you guys come up with a plan–"
"Actually," Jack interrupted me, "Thomas and Logan never really had a plan, remember? They never told us how we were going to save Percy."
"Yeah, but I was told that Percy was locked up in a dungeon," I replied, looking around the area.
"This is new for me too," Thomas commented. "I've never seen the king's castle, but I'm pretty sure your GPS broke or something. This can't be it."
Anti and Dark seemed to glance at each other before they broke into a fit of laughter. Phil rolled his eyes. "Since it seems that no one else is going to explain this, I will. This little prairie house isn't the king's castle, it's the...well, entrance, I guess."
Jack and I exchanged glances before Jack replied, "Go ahead and keep explaining. How is a house an entrance to a castle?"
"That's a bit difficult–"
"I'll go put in the code and they can just see for themselves," Anti decided as he exited the van. "Let's just hope that Felix hasn't changed any of the passcodes since the last time we were here."
I watched as he walked up to the garage door and opened a keypad. He pressed four buttons and smiled before closing the keypad and jogging back to the van.
"Did it work?" Dark asked as Anti buckled his seatbelt.
"Yup, but honestly it's a bit concerning that he doesn't change his passwords," Anti replied.
"Okay, I'm not sure what went down between all of you," Logan started, "but if you guys are the only other people who know the password, maybe he wanted you to come back."
Dan and Phil chuckled half-heartedly. "I doubt it," Dan stated.
"Why?" I asked. "What happened with all of you?"
"It's a long story and if it becomes important, you'll find out," Anti replied. "As for right now, you humans better pay attention to the entrance. It's nearly impossible to explain how this works, so you're just gonna have to watch."
I stared at the house expectantly. Nothing changed. I turned to face the others. "I think you broke it instead of opening it."
"Pay attention or you'll miss it," Phil murmured from behind me.
I went to look back to the house, but it wasn't there. My eyes widened and I frantically looked around, but it was completely gone. "Where–"
"It's back behind us, now," Dan interrupted, more interested in where the van was moving than my question.
Not only the house, but the entire countryside had been torn away from us. The van shot through something that was similar to a wormhole. It kind of reminded me of the portal-like thing that had brought me to the Underworld. Multiple colors swirled around the van, forcing it forward toward a bright light.
I looked out the window beside me to find that between certain swirls of color, I could see glimpses of the Underworld. "Are we going through–"
"Shut up and enjoy this, please!" Dan shouted, shaking my seat as he stared out his window in awe.
I looked back out the window, and almost thought I saw a glimpse of the building I had landed in with Anti when I first arrived. I opened my mouth to ask a question about the building but closed it after receiving several glares.
I caught Jack smiling at me out of the corner of my eye. "What–"
"Shut up!" Dan yelled, shaking my seat more forcefully. Jack covered his mouth as he laughed. Phil kicked his seat slightly, and he went quiet.
"Okay, serious question," Dark commented, "do I ask that many questions? Like, am I actually this annoying, but I haven't been noticing?"
There was a short pause before all the demons in the van erupted into laughter. "No offense, but you're about ten times more annoying than Mark," Anti replied.
"I'm pretty sure I could make an argument against that," Jack chuckled.
"Rude!" I yelled as I shoved him, causing him to laugh harder.
"I guess it depends on which one of you we've known longer," Phil answered. "We find Dark more annoying, but Jack finds Mark more annoying."
"I personally think that Jack's just being an asshole," I replied, still chuckling with Jack.
"Now, when have I ever been mean to you?" Jack asked in a sarcastic tone.
I was prepared to list off a hundred memories I had of Jack being a sarcastic Irish butt, but before I had the chance, Dark reported, "The castle's in sight!"
I looked forward to find that I could make out the silhouette of a large, medieval-like castle through the bright light the van was headed toward. I didn't get a proper visualization of the castle until after we had soared through the bright light.
The van stopped moving and the swirls of color disappeared. I unbuckled my seatbelt, yanked the door open, and climbed out of the van to get a clear view of the castle. It was black, with blue accents on the roof and around window sills. The top practically pierced through the sky. There were also blue banners hanging down from a few windows that read, 'Execution Day! Watch Thirteen-Year-Old Percy Receive Punishment at Noon!'
"That's screwed up," Jack commented from beside me.
"Yeah," Dan replied as he got out of the van, "we've been dealing with crap like this for the past couple of months."
"I've seen worse headlines for it," Anti mumbled from the other side of the van.
"Yeah, but it's still messed up that his death is being advertised as if it's a football game," Dark grumbled.
"Whatever the case, we're going to save Percy," Phil stated optimistically. "So, what's the plan?"
"We already went over the plan," Dan answered. "You, me, Dark, and Anti are going to distract Felix while everyone else rescues Percy."
"Yeah, but how are we going to get into the castle without being detected?"
There was no response until Logan yelled, "You guys didn't think about how we're going to get inside?!"
"In my defense, I assumed we were winging it just like everything else we've done today," Anti replied.
"Wait, you didn't plan on blowing up the side of the cafeteria to get us out?" Jack asked, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Not really? We just saw some dynamite and decided that blowing a hole in the building would be quicker than strategically breaking in and risking getting caught before we even found you," Dan replied.
"Plus," Dark added, "since we blew a hole in the wall, we got to bring Chica in!"
"Getting back on topic," Thomas stepped in, "what's the plan for breaking in?"
"Well, since no one's attacked us yet, I assume no one knows that we're here," Anti started. "We need to keep it that way for as long as we can."
"I think I have a plan," Logan commented. All of us looked in his direction as he explained, "The windows above the banners are open. I think we could find a way to get all of us through the windows by the demons using their wings and carrying humans. Once inside, we split into the two teams that are either distracting the king or rescuing Percy."
There was a short pause before Dark replied, "That's actually not a bad plan, assuming that all of us can fly correctly."
Anti and I exchanged a quick glance. We were both clearly remembering him flying me up to the house window and throwing me through it head first. "I'm still a good flyer," he answered.
Dan and Phil nodded. "Last I checked, both of us were doing alright," Phil replied.
Dark shrugged. "I'll manage."
All eyes went to Logan. He tilted his head slightly. "I wouldn't have offered that as a plan if I couldn't fly."
"So, it sounds like we have a plan to break in," Anti commented.
I smiled. "Sounds that way."
