Chapter 18
(The tag thing is at the bottom)
Dan's POV
Nate and Reagan explained the circumstances that they met under and I started to tear up. How could a dad do something like that? He killed Nate's mom right in front of him, and was going to try to kill him as well?
I noticed Nate had tears in his eyes but wasn't letting them slip out. Mark was smiling at Reagan and him.
I hugged Nate, and he hugged back immediately. Felix and Cry were looking at Nate sympathetically, and Jason looked ready to jump on Nate as well.
However, Jason had a question for Reagan, "So the first thing you told Nate about me was that I was cute?"
"You got a problem with that?" Reagan responded, smiling.
"Hold on," Mark started, "you punched a grown man in the face when you were twelve and did enough damage to be able to get away?"
"Technically I punched him in the temple, but yeah."
Mark hugged Reagan. "You're just full of surprises, aren't you?"
"You get used to it after a while," Jason answered, causing Reagan and Mark to giggle.
Nate pulled away from me a bit and whispered, "You aren't gonna be like my birth dad, are you?"
"Not a chance," I responded, even though I knew it was partially a lie. We were only fostering the kids, so I'd have to send him back to the orphanage after the month ended.
Which was tearing me apart inside, because I'd already gotten attached to them.
Nate hugged me again, tighter than before, and mumbled, "Thanks."
"A-huh. Now let's keep walking to the door. If that's where Phil, Jack, and Percy are, that's where I'm headed," I declared.
Nate sent me a questioning glance, like he was thinking about asking me something, but was afraid to. "What's up?" I asked after we started walking.
"Just a really weird question."
"As I've learned from Phil is not on Fire, weird questions tend to be the best questions."
He giggled at me, "Okay, you're asking for this. If I jump on your back, would you keep walking like normal?"
"Uh, probably? Wh–"
Before I could continue my question, Nate leaped onto my back. I stumbled forward a bit, earning weird glances from Felix and Cry, who were holding hands, and nearly fell on my face.
I caught my balance last minute and stood up straight. I heard Nate chuckling on my back, so I tried to defend myself, "You caught me by surprise!"
"Dude," Jason stepped in, "Nate's lighter than some of the clothes you wear."
"Fight me," I directed at Jason with narrowed eyes.
"Considering the fact that you couldn't handle Nate jumping onto your back, I don't think you'd stand a chance in a fight," Jason responded sassily.
"OHHHHH!" Nate screamed in my ear, causing me to stumble backward.
Felix and Cry snickered behind me. "What?!" I demanded.
"You look like a single parent," Felix chuckled out.
"Well, if you haven't noticed, that's exactly what I am at the moment."
"That's not true," Mark said from ahead of me, "we never signed the papers."
"You guys never signed the papers?" Reagan asked.
"No, but it's not that big of a deal. We can just sign them once we get out of here," Mark replied.
"Hate to break it to ya," Jason started, "but Ms. Higgins is dead, and Mrs. Marsh is nowhere to be found–"
"Who the hell is Mrs. Marsh?" Felix interrupted.
"Mrs. Marsh is the absolute bitch who acts nice around possible adopters, and is super mean around the kids," Nate explained.
"Who?" Cry asked.
"She's the old one," Jason simplified.
"Oh–"
"You guys are idiots," Reagan muttered to herself.
"And why is that?" I asked.
"Do you realize how many times we've tried to break out of here? When I met Nate I was in the middle of a breakout attempt, but my old roommate, Abby, found out. Point is, I know exactly where all of the papers are located because I've stolen them at least twenty times."
"YOU'VE STOLEN ADOPTION PAPERS?!" Felix screeched.
"Like Jason said, I'm full of surprises," she replied sarcastically.
"Wait, Nate said he saw you fighting with another girl in a park. You made it all the way to that park before anyone noticed you were gone?" I asked.
"That girl was a douchebag named Abby who everyone looked at as a little princess. She was a total liar, but all the workers loved her. She was literally the only person that they liked, and that was only because she explained every little thing that we did wrong. But yeah, I made it to the park, and the only reason she figured out about it was because we were roommates."
Nate chuckled next to me. "Why are you laughing?" Reagan asked.
"Because I just remembered when she got adopted last year."
Reagan started giggling as well. Mark looked at her, then to Nate and I. "Okay, I'm not going to guess, I'm just gonna ask. What happened the day she got adopted?"
"In a manner of speaking, David fought Goliath," Jason explained.
"I assume Abby was Goliath, but who was David?" Cry asked.
"Who do you think?" Nate asked, smiling at Reagan.
"Reagan?" Mark guessed.
"And?" Reagan replied.
I immediately knew what Reagan was implying. "There's no way you all fought her."
"Have you met us?"
*Flashback because they're fun af to write*
Reagan's POV
Mrs. Marsh called Nate, Percy, and I down to her office. We had all been messing around in Nate and Percy's room because Abby demanded I leave our room. She said something about having a sleepover, which I found hard to believe because who the heck would want to be friends with someone that mean?
Anyway, we navigated through the hallways of the orphanage to get to Mrs. Marsh's office. Once we walked in, we saw Abby sitting in between a couple who looked like they were rich. They were wearing expensive clothes, jewelry, and I'm pretty sure both the woman and the man were wearing makeup.
There were a few other kids in the office. They all either looked sad, jealous, or pissed. I, on the other hand, looked like the happiest kid in the world.
The person who had been plaguing my life was finally leaving!
"Kids, it is with a heavy heart that we send Abby off with her new parents. We're going to miss her so so much. You two really got lucky with her." Mrs. Marsh directed her last sentence to the stuck-up-looking couple sitting on either side of Abby.
Abby smirked at Nate, Percy, and I. I smirked right back at her as I flipped her off. Nate and Percy were snickering next to me, as well as a couple of other kids on the room.
Mrs. Marsh faked being shocked. I knew she was faking it because stuff like this happened every other day with the thirteen-year-olds and several times a day with the fifteen-year-olds.
"Reagan! What are you doing?!" Mrs. Marsh practically screamed.
"Just saying my goodbyes," I responded.
"How dare you treat our daughter like that!" the man yelled at me.
"Well, I wouldn't want to leave you out," I calmly replied as I flipped him off with my other hand.
Percy stuck his tongue out and shot his middle fingers up as he sang, "Fuck you all~"
Nate laughed next to me, "Finally! Someone stupid enough to take in that brat!"
Mrs. Marsh pushed the three of us back into the hallway and demanded that we wait there. We could still hear kids laughing in the office.
We all sat down on the floor. "Well, they hate us," Percy stated bluntly.
"I mean, we did flip them off," Nate replied. He hadn't stopped giggling.
"Mrs. Marsh is gonna kill us," Percy decided.
"If we're gonna die," I started, "I need to look cool in my casket. Nate, do you still keep that sharpie in your back pocket?"
"Reagan, I like the the way you think," Nate replied as he dug the black sharpie out of his pocket.
I grabbed it from him as he shuffled closer to me. I took the cap off and started drawing cat whiskers on his face.
"Isn't that the thing Dan and Phil do?" Percy asked, chuckling.
"Yup," I responded simply, as I drew the last whisker.
I handed the marker to Nate, but Percy snatched it from him and sat in front of me, "I'm drawing your whiskers, and Nate can draw mine."
"Uh, okay?" I replied.
Nate was smirking at us. "Should I give you two some privacy?"
"Ugh, you sound like Abby," Percy chuckled.
He drew the nose and whiskers and I suddenly remembered what Dan and Phil had said. It takes forever to wash off.
I ignored the thought as I watched Percy hand the sharpie to Nate. Nate scooted up to Percy and started on the nose.
"Ya know what we should do?" I started. "We should recreate a Phil is not on Fire."
"What's your favorite onomatopoeia?" Percy stated, trying not to smile.
"MI-CRO-WAVE!" Nate and I yelled before falling over from laughter.
When Nate fell over, he was in the middle of a whisker. One of the whiskers on Percy's face ran down his cheek, which caused Nate and me to laugh harder.
Percy started chuckling too, "You guys are ridiculous."
"That's why you love us!" Nate yelled.
The door swung open, barely missing me. "Hey! Watch it!" Percy exclaimed, helping me up.
"You're telling me to watch it!" Abby childishly stomped her foot.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"Mrs. Marsh told me to tell you to apologize."
"Why the heck would we that?" Nate questioned, crossing his arms.
"Because you were being rude in front of my new parents! Something none of you will ever get."
I clenched my fists at my sides. If there was one thing I hated, it was being told that I wouldn't be adopted.
And this bitch just said that to my best friends.
"What did you just say?" I asked through gritted teeth.
"I said you're all too annoying to ever be adopted. I mean, look at your faces. You three are twelve and you still draw on your own faces like its some sort of game."
"And you're too stuck up to know what having fun is. I'd rather have a fun childhood with my friends, which is something you don't have, than live with parents who probably wouldn't love me for who I am anyway!" Percy yelled, extending an arm in front of me.
"Aww, you have to have someone here to protect you. How cute," she directed at me.
"That's it you little fucker," I muttered as I pushed Percy's arm out of the way. I saw Nate's eyes go wide and a smile form on his face as I brought my fist up. "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's bullies."
"Oh what? You're gonna fight me? I'm stronger than you, you little nerd."
"I'm. A. Geek!" I yelled before swinging my fist at Abby. I hit her square on the cheek, causing her to stumble back and yelp in pain.
Percy was frozen in shock, his mouth hung agape. Nate, on the other hand, yelled, "FINISH HIM!"
"OW!" Abby screamed in pain.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were stronger than me," I sarcastically responded.
"YOU'LL PAY FOR THAT!" she screamed before raising her fist. She had her thumb concealed by her other fingers, which would have broken her thumb had she punched me. But, alas, Percy kicked the back of her knee, causing her to fall over.
She yelled again, and Mrs. Marsh walked in. "They hit me!" Abby stated in a baby voice.
"Oh boohoo." Percy rolled his eyes.
"Percy! Reagan! Nate! Go to your rooms NOW!" Mrs. Marsh yelled at us.
"Gladly," Nate said before walking off with Percy.
"Ya know what?" I asked.
"What?" Mrs. Marsh asked through gritted teeth.
"She tried to hit me too, but I guess she gets special treatment because of favoritism and shit."
"Upstairs. Now. And wash that marker off your faces. It makes us look bad."
"You do that already," I stated before bolting to my dorm.
*End Flashback*
Dan's POV
"We didn't wash the Sharpie off for a week, and when we went back to school, Jason told us to draw them on his face too," Nate finished the story.
"You guys wore the cat whiskers for a week?" I asked, smiling.
"Yeah," Reagan started, "the teachers weren't very happy with us."
We turned another corner, and there was a staircase. I heard Nate and Reagan mumble, "Fuck," in sync and I knew something was wrong.
"What?" I asked, kind of afraid of the answer.
"Well, uh, this staircase–"
"This is where the door was," Nate cut Reagan off.
