Chapter 2
After dinner Rey and Finn came to the drive that lead to the Skywalker estate. Even from here she could tell that it was a beautiful house, it seemed to have been built at least a hundred years ago but had clearly been influenced by gothic architecture.
There was a large garden which was now overgrown and unkept. As they neared the house Rey could see that the stone walls had been grown up with ivy.
It was a beautiful place, even overgrown as it was. She could remember when she was very young coming here once with her parents. She had thought that this was a castle and that Ben was her prince. But now that magical feeling was gone, replaced by a weird feeling in the pit of her stomach and a chill up her spine.
Finn parked the car in front of the house and stepped out. He opened the door and helped her out of the car like he always did. He went to get their bags out of the trunk of the car.
Rey began to get an eerie feeling in the pit of her stomach, like she was being watched. She looked up to see that there was a light on in one of the upstairs windows. As she looked up at the window she could see the silhouette of a figure looking out the window, watching her.
"Finn, there's a light on upstairs," she sounded more panicked than she had meant to.
"Maybe a groundskeeper left it on," Finn replied.
"But I can see someone in the window, someone...watching us," Rey said. But just as she spoke the words, the figure moved away from the window and the light went out.
Finn looked up as he pulled his head up out of the trunk. "I don't see anything."
"It was there Finn. Maybe the hotel is a better idea, I mean it's late and we won't be able to dust the furniture anyway," Rey said.
"Rey, I think you're just jumpy because of what those people said at the diner. Don't pay them any attention. You know how these small town people can be, they look for entertainment in what few places they can find it," Finn said.
"But the light... the figure at the window," Rey answered.
"It was just your imagination," Finn responded.
"Alright, but you have to go first," she replied.
"Okay, I will," Finn answered.
Finn went over to the door and Rey handed him the key. He inserted it into the keyhole and unlocked the door.
It was dark inside, Rey could just make out cobwebs and dark shadows.
"I don't like it. It seems creepy," Rey said. It had the makings of haunted house even from what little she could see.
"It's just dark." Finn looked for a light switch on the wall. He turned on the lights to reveal a large corridor with an open floor and staircases on either side and halls leading to the left and right. "See it's not creepy now that the lights are on. It's actually a very beautiful house. A little webbed and dusty, but with no one living here for several years that's to be expected."
Rey nodded. "You're right, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. I'm probably just jumping at shadows."
"I'll help you clean this place up tomorrow as much as I can, and I will post an ad for hiring a maid," he said. "In the meantime. You should pick a room."
She nodded and turned to head up stairs. She climbed up the steps and went down the hall until she came to a door. She opened it, it was a beautiful room. There was a king sized bed and beautiful lace curtains and green drapes on the windows. There were two chairs and on the wall was a bookshelf filled with all kinds of books. This must be the master bedroom, she thought.
She had written to Ben after her parents died that she wanted to marry him two years earlier than they had planned. He had promised to have their room ready before she arrived. He wanted it to be the way she wanted, and it was, it was perfect. Green drapes with lace curtains, just like she'd asked for. Green blankets with daisies and pink roses. She sighed, it would be difficult for her to sleep in here knowing that she should have been sleeping in his arms in this room, instead of alone and jumping at every shadow. But he would have wanted her to sleep in here after all, he had fixed this room for her.
As she looked around she noticed two doors. She opened the first to find a large closet. On one half of it hung men's clothes. The other side was empty, it was probably meant to be where she would hang her dresses. She went over to one of the shirts and gently touched it. She sighed, this was going to be harder than she thought. Everywhere she turned there were things to remind her of him. Things that reminded her that she could have lived the fairytale she dreamed of as a girl instead of spending her life alone in a house that was now closer to a haunted mansion than a castle.
She shuttered suddenly as she felt the eerie sensation that she was being watched again. She looked around, but of course she was alone. She stepped out of the closet and into the bedroom, it was empty too.
Just then she heard footsteps approaching and the halls creaking. She backed up against the wall. The door flew open and she let out a scream. A loud thud came from the closet where she had been only moments ago.
"It's just me," Finn said, as he stepped into the door carrying a box of her things. "You're jumping at shadows again."
"But when I was in the closet, I had an eerie feeling like someone was watching me. And just now I heard a thud coming from inside," she said. "Can't you at least check it... I mean I know you don't believe in ghosts, but what if the murder is hiding in there. That's something very real and very dangerous. You know they never found the one who did it."
There was another thud inside the closet.
Finn went over and opened the door. It was empty, but he checked behind the clothes just to make her feel better.
"There's nothing here Rey. Old houses creek. This house is over a hundred years old, it creaks. As far as someone watching you goes, you're just on edge, your mind is playing tricks on you," he said. "But you know what is really odd, this room."
"What about it? Ben fixed it exactly the way I wanted it before he died. It's just like I imagined it," she replied.
"It's not that. It is a lovely room but, have you noticed every other room is covered in dust and cobwebs except for this one," he said.
"Hmm, I didn't notice that. Maybe someone who knew the Skywalker family cleaned it when they heard I was coming. They would probably know that I would be sleeping in this room," she said.
"I guess you're right, I didn't think about that," he replied.
"Now who is jumping at shadows?" she asked.
"I'm not. I was just wondering," he replied. He sat the box he was carrying on the bed. "Here's your things."
"Thank you Finn," Rey answered. She went over to the window. "You know I think this is the same room where I saw the light and the figure at the window." She was starting to feel uneasy again.
"Maybe it was the person who cleaned the room for you," Finn suggested.
"But why would they leave without saying anything to us?" she asked.
"Maybe they didn't want you to feel obligated to pay them," Finn said. "Maybe they owed the Skywalker family something and thought this was a good way to repay them."
"Maybe," she answered.
"Anyway, you should try to get some sleep. We have a big day tomorrow if we're going to get this place into shape," Finn said.
She nodded. She looked through the box and pulled out her nightgown. Then she moved the box off of her bed.
"Did you find a room to sleep in Finn?" she asked.
"Yes, there are some nice guest rooms down the other corridor," he replied. "Just call if you need anything."
"Okay, goodnight Finn," she replied.
"Goodnight," he replied, then he turned to leave.
