✝ Chapter Two | Much Better.

During the entire walk home, the anonymous comment was all I could think about.

I usually never cared about what people thought of me, but this was different. I was pretty decent. But I knew I wasn’t nearly as stunning as most of the girls at school were.

“Hey,” I spoke up, slightly nudging Adam’s side. “Who do you think wrote that?”

Adam sucked in a breath as he gripped his books tighter. “That’s the whole point of it being anonymous, Lexi.”

I fell silent, knowing he was right. A part of me was dying to know, while the other part told me that I shouldn’t care. After all, it could have been written by someone I hated. It was probably Lou Sanders, the linebacker. He was known for doing anything that walked on two legs, boys included.

We stopped just outside of Adam’s house and his lips curled into a small smile. “My dad bought me a new game yesterday. Do you wanna play for a little bit?” His oceanic eyes gleamed with hope.

Folding my arms against my chest, I cocked a skeptical brow. “Adam, you ask me that every single day and my answer is always no. I’m sticking with that answer.” Without saying anything else, I continued to stroll down the sidewalk until I arrived at my house.

As I was about to enter my house, I heard Adam call out, “Lexi! Just so you know, I can never personally grow as a man if you don’t let me in!”

An amused scoff escaped my lips. “I would hardly call a hard-on personal growth!” I yelled back, turning my keys into the lock and disappearing into the house.

I slammed the door behind me and threw my keys on the coffee table. “Mom, I’m-” I stopped mid-sentence when I rounded the corner and saw my mother in nothing but a bra and panties. It was an unbearable sight considering my mother wasn’t close to being fit.

   “Lexus!”

I cupped my hands over my eyes. “Mom!” I cried out. “Why are you naked in the kitchen? We cook food in there!”

“Oh, hush up.” Her delicate voice traveled throughout the family room.

When I uncovered my eyes, a robe was covering her small frame and all the other…parts. “Oh, thank god.” I let out a sigh of relief and pushed past her, heading towards the fridge. “I hope you cooked something good because I’m starving!” I leaned into the refrigerator and pulled out the carton of milk.

“Lexi, I need to talk to you.” The tone of her voice was laced with concern as she pushed her short black hair behind her ears, only to have it fall back over again. She always did this when she had bad news.

I stared at her inquiringly as I gulped down a few sips of milk.

“One of your teachers called,” she began, avoiding eye contact.

    “Which one?”

   “Gregory.”

I pulled my brows together. “Gregory? Who’s that?”

   “Gregory Lawrence?”

When the realization hit me, I nodded. “Mr. Lawrence? The secret Nazi?”

My mom opened her mouth to respond but quickly stopped herself. She crossed her arms and knitted her thin eyebrows. “Secret Nazi? What?”

“He has a weird obsession with Hitler. It’s kind of weird considering we don’t even talk about World War Two.” I placed the milk carton back into the fridge and turned to look at her. Her jaw was clenched in aggravation and her eyes were set in a thin line.

“I’m being serious here, Lexus.” The tone of her voice definitely proved it. “He told me that you were failing to turn in your assignments on time. He even said you sat through an entire test without answering a single question! Lexi, what’s going on?”

“I don’t know,” I replied, throwing my hands up and moving slowly to the window. “School is just not my thing.”

   “Lex-”

“I blank out, okay?” I snapped. “I know all the stuff, but it just slips away from me when it’s time to be assessed on it. This dyslexia thing isn’t exactly the most convenient, you know.”

The concern in her eyes proved that she understood. “Lex, we can always ask-”

“I’ll try harder, alright?” The last thing I wanted was to be placed in special classes just because of my dyslexia. Knowing Stephanie, she would definitely make sure it happened. “Can I go now?”

She stared at me for a while longer before she let out a reluctant sigh. “Okay. I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”

Relieved, I bolted up the stairs and into my room, collapsing onto my bed. I stared up at the ceiling fan and thought back to today’s events. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get my mind off the-hashtag-dot-net. It bothered me that I cared so much, but maybe that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I reached for my phone and pulled up the website. I bit down on my bottom lip as I waited for the page to load. As soon as it did, I scrolled down to my name and gently pressed on the icon. A small part of me told myself that I shouldn’t, but if one person knew about me, then it was more than likely other people did too.

I took a deep breath and looked at the comments under my name. There were two new ones.

That girl is a leader! I really wish I could be like her.

I saw her blow that nerd kid behind the bleachers.

I grimaced at the thought of that last one. First, it wasn’t anywhere close to being true and second, the mere thought of having such a relationship with Adam made me gag.

I put the phone down and smiled to myself. It was very pleasing to know someone thought of me as a leader. Maybe Stephanie didn’t brain-wash them all, after all.

✝      ✝      ✝      ✝

The next day at school, everyone was talking about the new scandalous website.

The website gained so much popularity in one day that when Adam and I walked through the front doors, no one acknowledged our presence. Everyone was too busy scrolling through their phones and tablets, gawking at all the comments.

   Adam’s jaw dropped. “Whoa!”

It probably was the first time in years that so many people talked at once. Stephanie was nowhere to be seen, but I knew she would be furious.

“That website is really a big deal, huh?” I glanced over at him, then back at my fellow peers.

“Well, duh!” he exclaimed as if it had been the most obvious thing in the world. “You can say everything and anything about someone without them even knowing! Whoever created this earns major props!”

   “Who made it?”

He shrugged loosely. “Who cares?” He overlooked the crowd and an excited grin grew on his face. “Oh gosh, Stephanie will have a fit when she sees this.”

I followed the direction he was pointing to and saw that Elizabeth Birmingham, the germaphobic cheerleader, was talking to one of the lacrosse girls. They were both giggling over something they read on the website.

“This is perfect!” I squealed, not being able to contain my excitement. “That damn president will need some Xanax after this!” I let out a big hearty laugh because…this was damn near funny.

Adam laughed along with me and began to add something else when suddenly someone tugged him aside.

I didn’t know his name but he was wearing one of those ridiculously ugly chess club sweatshirts. He wore thick glasses like Adam, which seemed to be a common theme among the chess geeks.

“Adam! Charlie wants to talk to you!” the boy said eagerly as he pulled Adam along with him.

“Charlie?” Adam questioned. “Since when does Charlie want to talk to me?”

“Since now.” The boy grew more impatient with every second that passed. “Come on!”

“Hey!” I barked at the scrawny kid. “Leave him alone. He doesn’t care about your stupid chess club.”

The boy looked at me with bewildering eyes as if I was speaking a different language.

“Adam, let’s go get breakfast.” I pointed off into the direction of the cafeteria.

He sucked in a shaky breath as his eyes darted between the boy and me. “Lexi…” his words trailed off.

“Come on!” the boy urged again. This time, he completely managed to tear Adam away from me and disappeared into the crowd of teenagers.

I stood there in awe, not believing what just happened. After a few more moments, I came to realize the terms of my current situation. Adam was being re-accepted into the chess club, which meant I was free.

A satisfied smile crept onto my face and I turned away quickly, almost bumping into someone.

“God dammit,” I muttered under my breath. It was the second day in a row that someone didn’t watch where they were going. I glanced up at the culprit only to be met with a pair of enchanting, transparent ice blue eyes.

    “I’m so sorry!”

I felt the words get caught in my throat and I just stood there, helpless.

Because towering over me at six-foot-one, was Jack Addister; the most undeniably gorgeous man that I have ever laid my eyes on.

A/N: I couldn't help myself! Sorry!
