You learn something new about people every day

Misty

Nash, Nixon, and I watched Emilio without making it obvious and waited. From what Marissa said, Emilio enjoys hanging out in cemeteries. We waited until he left the house with a black pack on his back and followed him. Emilio walked until he arrived at a graveyard, found an opening in the fence, and squeezed through it. We gave him a few minutes before following suit.

We walked until we spotted him standing at an upright headstone and hiding behind a tree. We watched him unzip the backpack and pull out an EMF detector, video equipment, headphones, and a tape recorder. He assembled everything before placing the headset on his head, turning on the equipment, and listening.

"You learn something new about someone every day. We learned our housemate enjoys ghost hunting," Nixon said.

Nash and I looked at Nixon before rolling our eyes.

Emilio moved a wand around, trying to pick up any energy. It didn't help our energy was messing with his equipment, especially Nash's energy. Emilio walked in our direction. Our eyes widened as we darted to find a hiding spot. We spit up and hid behind headstones. Emilio walked toward one of us, moving us from our hiding spot.

Now, picture this poor guy walking through a cemetery, thinking he's detecting a ghost when he's picking up our energy. Every time we moved, he followed us, thinking we were a ghost.

It wasn't until Emilio got Nash cornered by a building. He looked at Nash as confusion flooded his face as his EMF detector went ape shit. "What the...?"

Nixon and I walked toward Nash and Emilio to help Nash.

Emilio removed his headphones around his shoulders as he hit his machine with his palm. "Stupid thing."

"I doubt your EMF detector is defective," I said.

Emilio spun around and gaped at Nixon and me. "Uh, I wasn't hunting ghosts."

We crossed our arms and raised our brows.

"What were you doing with an EMF detector in a cemetery after dark? Were you have a party for one?" Nixon asked.

"Uh, um." Emilio furrowed his brows while shifting in his spot.

Nash shook his head and moved to me. "Ignore, my cousin. Marissa told me about your ghost-hunting adventures. We wanted to see if she was telling us the truth."

Emilio put his hands up to us. "I swear I'm not crazy."

"We didn't think that," Nixon said.

Emilio lowered his hands. "You didn't?"

"Nope. But we're curious why you're so interested in ghost hunting."

"You'll think I'm crazy if I tell you the truth, " he said, shaking his head.

"Try us." Nixon smirked.

Emilio took a deep breath before releasing it. "Okay. I would have these crazy dreams about things that happened to me but didn't happen. Sometimes, I would zone out and see this image. I thought I was going crazy until I read about ghost hunting and mediums."

"What imagines?" Nash asked.

"They were like mini scenes from movies." Emilio shook his head.

"Tell us about them."

Where was Nash going with this?

"I found myself in a house with other people. There was hot sauce," Emilio said.

We exchanged glances as Emilio mentioned what he saw.

"Out of curiosity, what is your middle name?" Nixon asked.

"Marco. Why?" Emilio knitted his brows in confusion.

"Oh, no reason." Nixon turned his back to Emilio and had us follow suit before leaning into us and lowering his voice. "We just found Maggie's crazy brother."

Nash and I nodded in agreement. Well, at least it wasn't Eden. That would be weird.

We turned to Emilio.

"You're not gay, are you?" Nixon asked.

Emilio gave us a sideways glance. "No."

"Have you ever had a girlfriend?"

"I haven't had much time to date while studying and working." He shrugged.

"Would you like one?"

Emilio opened his mouth and pulled his brows inward.

Nash smacked Nixon upside the back of the head. "Knock it off, tool."

Nixon rubbed his head.

Nash turned to Emilio with his hands on his hips. "Look, we don't think you're weird about your ghost-hunting fetish. But we need to tell you something."

Emilio looked at us with curiosity.

Emilio paced back and forth while speaking in Spanish after I told him the truth about us and him. He threw his hands into the air and gestured wildly while speaking Spanish. I'm not sure what he was saying, but I picked out this was fantastic.

Emilio stopped his rant and approached us while bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Can I pick your brains about the other side?"

"I would rather you didn't," I said.

Emilio's face fell slightly. "Oh."

"What do you want to know?" Mags asked.

"Everything! You don't understand how excited I am to find out I'm not crazy."

"We can tell you it happened in utero. As for our memories returning, that took time."

"I always thought something was wrong with me. Nothing seemed to make sense to me. I couldn't talk to my folks. They would have never believed me."

"How come you told Marissa?"

"I didn't tell Marissa about the dreams or visions. I just said I had an interest in ghosts. She wanted to see what I did on my ghost hunting. I hoped I would make contact to explain what I had experienced."

"So, you're not gay?" Nix asked.

I looked at the black sky and blew air past my lips.

"No. Why do you keep asking me that?" Emilio asked.

"Making sure."

"No, I'm not gay."

Nix arched his brow.

Emilio threw his hands up to Nix. "Not if there's anything wrong with gay people. I'm sure you're quite happy with whatever guy you choose."

Nix's face morphed in anger. "I'm not freaking gay, pal! I have a girlfriend!"

"I'm guessing denial is your go-to." Emilio shrugged.

Nix took a step toward Emilio. I stepped between them before Nix hurt Emilio. Mags roared with laughter.

I looked at Emilio. "Nix isn't gay."

"If you say so," Emilio said.

Nix tried to break free to get to Emilio. I gave Nix a zap to keep him from throttling Emilio. I swear these two would cause more issues than we needed with a psycho demon hunting us.

There's nothing creepy whatsoever about hanging out in a cemetery after dark. Nope, it's another day for us.

While Nash kept Nixon from jumping on Emilio, my locket started glowing like a beacon. I glanced down at the bright, shiny light before I saw a shadow move across headstones. "Uh, guys."

Nixon and Emilio argued while Nash referred. The shadow kept moving.

"Guys."

These fools weren't listening to me.

"Yo, tools!"

They stopped their bullshit and looked at me.

"We have company, " I said, pointing at the shadow moving across the headstones.

They moved to me as we watched this thing move until it disappeared and rose from the ground before us. Emilio opened his mouth. Nash threw his arm around Emilio's neck and slapped his hand over Emilio's mouth before shaking his head.

We stayed quiet while this thing's head darted around, trying to detect us. It moved closer to my face as its gnarly tongue moved toward me. I closed my eyes and controlled my breathing.

"Yo, asshole! Looking for us!" Nathan yelled from behind us.

The thing snapped its head in Nathan's direction and released a horrible screech.

"Now, Nashville!" Noah yelled.

Nash released Emilio and pressed his hands against this thing, which released a burst of massive energy. The thing released a guttural roar before disappearing into the ground.

Nathan, Noah, and Nolan walked toward us while Nash checked on me to ensure that thing didn't touch me.

"How did you find us?" Nixon asked.

"Our spidey senses were tingling," Nolan said.

River smacked Nolan upside the head.

Nathan rolled his eyes. "We received a high-pitched ringing in our ears. It led us to the cemetery."

Nash picked my locket up and held it between his thumb and finger. "Your locket must act like a beacon for us."

"Is it possible?" I asked.

"It would make sense."

"Why are you hanging out in a cemetery?" Noah asked.

"Marissa mentioned Emilio enjoys ghost hunting. Nash wanted to tell him the truth since Diego spilled the beans to Eden and Marissa," I said.

"Our cousin has a big fucking mouth," Nathan said.

"No shit. Oh, and Emilio has Marco's soul," Nixon declared.

Nathan, Noah, and Nolan did a double take.

"You're not gay, are you?" Nathan asked.

"No, but I'm not so sure about Nixon," Emilio said with a shrug.

Nixon lunged at Emilio while Nash stopped him and shoved him away. Emilio packed up his ghost-hunting equipment and walked beside me while picking my brain. The other cousins trailed us.

"The next four years should be interesting having Marco and Nixon in the same house," Noah said.

Nathan and Nolan threw their heads back and laughed.

The next four years should be pretty interesting indeed.
