→04. I want,I take←

Maxwell slowly opens his eyes,as the first sunray falls on him. He peeks out of his blanket, and looks around to see if Happiness is here.As he searches the room, his eyes scan every corner, every nook and cranny, but there's no sign of Happiness. He lets out a sigh of relief, thinking maybe it was all just a dream.
Out of excitement he jumps out of his bed and runs straight to the bathroom to brush his teeth. As the door behind him closes,a delicate flower petal is seen falling on the ground,it's a yellow ochre one,the same shade as Happiness's hair.

Maxwell is oblivious to the flower petal, too caught up in his morning routine. He brushes his teeth, washes his face, and prepares for another day at school.
As he exits the bathroom, he's greeted by the sound of his mom calling him from downstairs. "Max, breakfast is ready."she says, her voice cheerful but
still filled with slight disappointment. Maxwell's stomach growls in response, and he hurries downstairs to see what his mom has prepared for him.

As Maxwell sits down for breakfast, his mind is still preoccupied with the thoughts of Happiness. He wonders if she really was in his room the previous night or was he dreaming? His gaze drifts off, lost in the haze of his own thoughts.

"Maxwell," his mother's voice pierces through his reverie, and he almost jerks the plate, his spoon and fork hovering in mid-air. He stares at his mother with wide eyes, his voice stuttering as he speaks, "Y-yes mother?" The brief exchange is met with a silent understanding between his parents, their glances flicking towards each other for a split second.

"Hurry up with your breakfast and slide in the backseat," his mother instructs, her tone gentle but firm. "Your father is busy, hence I will be dropping you to school today." Maxwell nods mechanically, his mind still lingering on the enigmatic figure of Happiness. He forces himself to focus on the present, taking a bite of his breakfast as his mother gathers her things to leave.

As Maxwell walks out of the house, he seems lost in his thoughts, his footsteps mechanical. Memories of the small accident caused by his carelessness flood his mind, and he feels a pang of guilt wash over him. He can't shake off the feeling that he's hurt his aunt, and the weight of his actions settles heavy on his conscience. This is a new sensation for him, one he's not familiar with, and it makes him uncomfortable.

His mother slips into the driver's seat, and Maxwell's gaze drifts towards the back seat. He reaches out to open the door, his hand closing around the handle. As the door swings open, he's met with a sight that makes his heart skip a beat. Happiness sits in the corner, a bright smile on her face, her yellow ochre hair gleaming in the morning light.

Maxwell's scream echoes through the car, his eyes wide with shock. He stares at Happiness, his mind reeling with questions. How did she get here? What does she want from him? He's frozen in place, his heart racing with excitement and a hint of anger.

Happiness simply waves at him, her eyes sparkling with amusement. She seems to be enjoying his reaction, and Maxwell feels a shiver run down his spine. What does she have planned for him?

"What in the world are you doing here?" Maxwell asks, his breathing heavy. Happiness smiles and answers, "I am going to accompany you to your school, Max!"

Maxwell cuts her off, his voice shaking with excitement. "You don't have to!" But before Happiness can respond, Maxwell's mother turns from her seat, her eyes fixed on her son. "Maxwell, who are you talking to? Stop acting so weird and get inside the car!" Her irritation is palpable, her tone laced with disappointment and frustration.

Sweat begins to accumulate on Maxwell's forehead as he rushes to his mother, trying to explain. "Mother, I swear, I'm not lying! A girl named Happiness is sitting on the backseat! She's in charge of the happiness of all the people around the globe - she came to my room last night - and now she's here!"

Maxwell's mother sighs, her patience wearing thin. "Gosh, Max, please stop this! I don't have much time, I'm getting late for work! I'll definitely listen to your creativity later, but as for now, hop on the backseat." Maxwell opens his mouth to protest, but his mother's stern glance silences him. With a defeated look, he returns to his seat, his eyes locked on Happiness, who's watching the exchange with an enigmatic smile.

Maxwell slams into the backseat, his anger and frustration boiling over. He avoids eye contact with his mother, who's already pulled out of the driveway. Instead, he directs his gaze towards the rearview mirror, his eyes locking onto Happiness's reflection.

So she really does exist? But why is she even accompanying me to school? What a headache!

"Calm down Maxwell,"Happiness speaks, while Max is bemused.

Did she just now hear my thoughts?

He wonders while Happiness simply chuckles, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "That's one of my powers, Maxwell." She pauses, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Well, I am here to ensure you have a wonderful day at school." Her words are laced with an underlying sweetness, but Maxwell can't shake off the feeling that there's something more to it.

After a 10-minute ride, they reach the school, and Maxwell sounds annoyed. Happiness, on the other hand, is beaming with joy, taking in the friendly atmosphere of the school. She gazes around at the cheerful students, the colorful decorations, and the vibrant atmosphere, her eyes sparkling with delight.

Maxwell rolls his eyes and mutters under his breath, "Great, just what I needed. A weird girl ruining my day." He grabs his backpack and steps out of the car, Happiness following closely behind.

As they enter the classroom, Maxwell takes his seat, trying to ignore Happiness's cheerful presence. His teacher, Mrs. Johnson, walks in, a bright smile on her face. "Okay, class! Today is a special day. It's Rosie's birthday, and we're going to celebrate with a happy birthday song!" The classroom erupts into excitement, with students chatting and cheering.

Happiness claps her hands together, her eyes shining with enthusiasm. "Oh, how wonderful! I love birthdays!" She turns to Maxwell, her face radiant with excitement. "Let's sing together, Maxwell!"

Maxwell rolls his eyes, but reluctantly joins in, clapping along with his classmates as they sing "Happy Birthday" to Rosie. Happiness smiles, her eyes twinkling with knowledge of the joyful events that will unfold in Rosie's day. Soon it is short break and Rosie is distributing chocolates, she gives everyone one as they are limited and she wants to share them to her friends who travel in the van. Maxwell is extremely unsatisfied by the number of chocolate which he has recieved and decides to steal.

When Rosie goes to the lavatory with her friends,he sneakily grabs three more chocolates from her bag. He is suprised to see that Happiness isn't around him.

She is probably busy admiring Rosie's red dress. This is just perfect.

He smiles to himself, and runs to the far end of the classroom and starts eating the chocolates. He thinks that he is enjoying the treat but in the back of the mind,he is worried that someone might catch him with the extra chocolates. Soon the wrappers are empty and he throws them in the dustbin. Feeling satisfied and full,he burps and sits on his chair. Meanwhile Happiness returns with Rosie who is giggling with her friends. Maxwell's smirks to himself as Happiness is unaware of what he just did,or maybe not.

After long school hours,it is finally time to go home. Maxwell is packing his bag, while Happiness is observing him, almost as if she wants him to accept something. Just then a cry is heard from the first seat of the classroom, the voice belongs to Rosie. Mr Gilbreth rushes to her and inquires,Rosie's eyes are filled with tears,"Sir! My chocolates are gone! I wanted to give them to my friends who come in the van! They go for morning coaches so they don't join the bus! Oh no... They are going to be so sad..."

Mr Gilbreth tries to pacify her, while Maxwell grabs his bag and leaves quickly. Guilt takes over him, while Happiness stops him. She decids to question him for his recent behaviour,"
Maxwell may I know why did you take Rosie's chocolates? You knew that these were for her friends right?" She asks calmly while Max is a mess.

"I... I didn't know that it was for them!"

"You very well that. Just because of three chocolates poor Rosie is crying on her birthday. It is supposed to be her happy day but now just because you took the chocolates for your own good it's ruine-" Happiness tries to explain him his mistake but Max interrupts.

"I want it that way!" He shouts,"I wanted to eat it,so I took it! I take what makes me happy!"

Happiness shakes her head, her tone now fills with seriousness,"And what if that makes other distance themselves from you? Maxwell you are a good boy by heart but your actions will make others despise you. You know what kid? Let's go for a ride tonight."

"A ride?" He decides to reconfirm, thoughts cloud his mind. What kind of a ride? When does she plan to take him? How is she going to take him? What will his parents think when he isn't present in the house? "Yes Maxwell, a ride and I promise you that it will be a good one."

[A/N- The fourth musical prompt is used in the form of a dialogue where Maxwell feels like a mess and bluntly says that he gets what he wants without caring how it affects others. I hope you liked the chapter! Stay tuned!]
