Prologue - [A Beautiful Day]

The CEO looked at me with both annoyance and concern on her face. Actually, her face usually looked like that, but today there was an odd exaggeration of concern. "I spoke with Ethan before I called you in so don't try and lie to me, do you understand?"

Damn Ethan, I thought. I couldn't blame him though, Nylah was too scary to be lied to.

I could do it because she and I were pretty close.

"Do you understand, Nile?" She asked me.

I leaned back in the chair, "okay. Yeah."

Nylah sighed. "Your personal issues are clearly affecting your work-"

"They are not."

"Nile."

"Really," I said, looking away, "I'm fine."

"No you are not," Nylah responded, "in the last two weeks, you've gotten absolutely nothing done."

"That's not because of my personal issues."

"Then what is it?"

I hesitated.

"I really think you need to sit down for a little while and-"

"What are you going to do? Send me on vacation for a bit? That's not necessary, Nylah. I'm fine. Just let me get back to work and I'll prove it to you," I said, knowing very well that sending me on a vacation was probably exactly what she wanted to do. "I'll have everything I haven't finished done this weekend."

And Nylah sighed again. "Listen, Nile. I didn't call you here to simply tell you to fix yourself up. I especially didn't call you here to overwork you and force you to spend your weekends without sleep," she said, leaning forward and only showing concern on her face now. "I care about your health more then I do the work you're doing."

I kept frowning but I believed what she said.

Though Nylah spent most of her time glaring and frowning and scaring people, deep down she was probably the most genuine and kind CEO that existed in this world. She actually cared about her employees. Every single one of them.

A lot.

It was to a point where we all often compared her to a mother. A scary, but loving mother.

"Finding out that Amber cheated on you has taken a toll on your health. I can see it... everyone can see it."

"I'm fine."

"No you're not," Nylah said firmly, looking annoyed again. "In a matter of a two weeks you've clearly lost weight, you look like a mess and you've been dressing horribly. I've noticed that you've stopped talking much to your coworkers and you aren't working as hard as you usually do."

"That's not true."

"Nile, you're my best programmer and my best developer and my best everything. Just a week ago you were fixing the photocopier, the coffee machine and the shelves in the kitchen because you finished everything that you had to do that week four days early. This week, the other photocopier is broken... and it's still broken-"

"If you want me to fix the photocopier, I'll go fix the photocopier-"

"No, you idiot," She rolled her eyes, "What I'm saying is that two weeks ago, you were being productive and happy and your normal self. Now you're this depressed, anti-social, pitiful man."

I picked at the loose string on my shirt, "I'm not pitiful."

"Do you really want me to believe that you're not broken up over the fact that your girlfriend of five years cheated on you?"

I groaned and put a hand on my head before looking back at her. "What do you want me to do, Nylah? Go see a psychiatrist? A therapist?" I asked, "I have no time for that-"

"No," Nylah said as she pulled out a file from her drawer and opened it up in front of her, "I've got an even better idea."

"Enlighten me."

"You're going to go see our Happiness Coordinator."

I hesitated, "what?"

"The Happiness Coordinator." She looked at me.

Hesitation again. "What the hell is the Happiness Coordinator?"

"You haven't met her yet?" Nylah asked, "she's been working here for about two weeks now."

"A happiness coordinator?" Was I the only one here who thought that that sounded stupid?

"See, if you weren't so depressed, you would have known that we got a happiness coordinator," she shook her head as she spoke, "But fine, whatever. You're going to go have some sessions with her."

"Are you kidding?"

"No," Nylah said, "I am not. Your first session with her will be now."

"Nylah, I don't have time to be-"

"You have two options Nile," she looked at me with her stern, frightening look, "the first is that you go see the goddamn Happiness Coordinator, and the second is that I force you to take a stress leave. Pick one."

I stood up, annoyed. "Fine. Where's the goddamn Happiness Coordinator?"

Nylah looked satisfied as she smiled and closed the folder, "room nine-twenty-three."

--- :) ---

I marched over to room nine-twenty-three with a glare on my face. No one bothered to stop and chitchat with me because they all knew I was mad. And everyone knew not to speak to Nile Swords when he was annoyed or mad.

I was half expecting to see an old lady who looked and sounded like my high school guidance councillor.

I hated her.

She told me that I sucked at computer science and programming and that I should drop those courses and pursue business like my father wanted me to do.

But look at me now. I was the head programmer and developer at one of the best online reading and writing app producing companies in the world.

Take that Ms. Garvin.

Stupid old lady.

So when I knocked rather aggressively on the door and found it being opened by a young, somewhat pretty girl with a smile on her face and perfume that smelled like a beautiful day... I was kind of lost for words.

"Hi, Nile," She said with a brightsmile, "Nylah told me to expect you... I'm Melina, the Happiness Coordinator-"she giggled as she said her title, "-it's a pleasure to finally meet you!"
