NileSwords - [Happy No More]

Work always passed by quickly for me. Maybe it was because I really liked what I was doing. Or maybe it was because I was good at it.

But whatever it was... work passed by quickly for me.

I packed up my things into my messenger bag and picked up a folder which was filled with website glitches that I had to spend the next week going through. If I had nothing to do this weekend, maybe I would just finish looking through them early.

When I left my office, I nodded my head at my coworkers who waved eagerly at me. "Have a great weekend, Nile!" Annabelle said.

Annabelle was a friendly intern who always got her work done.

So Annabelle was cool.

"You too, Anna."

When I got to the elevator, I pressed the ground floor button and watched the elevator doors close.

But then a hand reached in and stopped the doors, making them open again. "There you go again!" My best friend Ethan shouted as he held the doors open, "leaving work without saying bye to your best friend!" The brown haired, green eyed boy pouted his lips and looked away dramatically.

"Goodbye, Ethan." I said before rolling my eyes.

Suddenly his girlfriend, and my other best friend, Thara pushed passed Ethan into the elevator and looked at me hopefully. "Please tell me you changed your mind!"

I frowned, "sorry, Thara." I said, "I can't come."

She sighed and looked at me sadly. "Please, pretty please!"

"Yeah," Ethan said, "pretty please?"

Now I chuckled. "Guys. We do this every last Friday of the month. Me missing one day isn't going to kill you."

"But it's our tradition!" Thara whined and started being dramatic as well, the front bangs of her black hair getting all messy as she stomped her foot.

"But you guys are forgiving people," I said, "Amber, not so much."

Ethan pulled Thara out of the elevator and hugged her from the back. "Fine, we won't be forgiving people then. See you later, douchebag. Right, Thara?"

Thara hesitated, "um... yeah."

I snorted, knowing as well as Ethan did that Thara could never stay mad at someone, especially me, even if it would kill her.

"Bye guys," I said as the doors started to close again.

"Bye Nile!" Thara said, "maybe we'll postpone it to next Friday?"

"Sounds good."

"You're supposed to be mad!" Ethan rolled his eyes.

"I mean see you never!"

I laughed as the doors shut.

I got into my black Cadillac Escalade and made my way home. The drive was short, about fifteen minutes on the highway. But I stopped at a flower shop to buy some flowers before continuing on my way to my condo.

I wasn't exactly good at being romantic. I was good at most things but not being romantic. Which was the only reason why I had to cancel on my best friends and our tradition of spending the last Friday of the month watching a movie, going out for dinner and then walking over to one of our homes to play video games and drink beer all night.

Amber, my girlfriend of five or so years, had been complaining for months that I spend too much working or with my best friends. Apparently I don't spend enough time with her.

I didn't think that was true.

Not at all.

Yeah, maybe on weekdays I would come home from work and work some more... but we almost always ate dinner together and then watched T.V. or something else.

Plus, weekends were pretty much free for me. So I spent a lot of my weekends with her too.

But girls will be girls.

And I guess putting in only a little bit of effort would never be enough.

When I got to my building, I took the elevator up to the eighteenth floor and walked into my condo.

My girlfriend was definitely home, since I saw her car in the garage and also since I could hear music playing.

But when I looked down to take off my shoes, I was surprised by a pair of unfamiliar shoes.

A pair of male work boots that did not belong to me.

My heart immediately started to race in panic because I would never deny that I was the jealous type. I never stopped my girlfriend from having male friends but I would never deny that it made me jealous.

And yeah, I was more than annoyed that she invited some guy over to my condo without letting me know. Though I guess it was unfair to call it mine since she practically lived here too.

I placed the flowers on the coffee table in the living room and looked around. She was nowhere in sight.

"Amber?" I called as I started walking down the hall towards my bedroom.

I suddenly heard shuffling and panicked whispers.

And I'm not an idiot.

I am anything but an idiot.

You see it in the movies... the guys being confused even after they open the door and walk in, unable to believe it even when they see it with their own eyes.

But I wasn't an idiot.

Before I even opened the door, I knew what was going on.

So I flung the door of my bedroom open and looked right at my girlfriend, ignoring the cursing stranger who struggled to button up his jeans before he grabbed his shirt.

I wanted to punch him.

I wanted to punch him so bad.

But I let him go.

I stepped aside and let him run out of my apartment, biting the inside of my cheek in fury as I kept staring at my girlfriend.

She stared at me in panic, covering her naked body with the blankets. "You... I thought you were going to be out with Ethan and Thara..."

"Get the fuck out of my condo, Amber."

Her eyes widened as I left the room.

That was all she had to say?

After I walked in on her cheating on me?

I started to pace in the living room, squeezing my phone tightly and debating on whether or not I should call Ethan.

Ethan always calmed me down.

If I didn't talk to him soon... I might do something bad.

Amber ran into the living room, dressed in jeans and a white t-shirt now. "Nile, please–"

"Get out!" I yelled, without stopping my pacing.

"Listen to me!"

I stopped pacing. "In my own apartment? Are you fucking crazy?"

She gulped and took a breath, "Nile you have to listen to me–"

"No, I'm not going to listen to you Amber–"

"This is why I did it!" She screamed at the top of her lungs, making her brown hair fall over her shoulders, "you never listen to me or pay attention to me!"

I glared at her. "You're gonna blame me?" I yelled back, "you're gonna blame me to defend your cheating ass?"

She scoffed and opened her mouth to say something but I cut her off as I walked past her and put my shoes back on. "When I get home you better be gone," I hissed. "You and all your things. I'm not dealing with this. We're done."

And with that, I walked out, slamming the door behind me.

I rushed back into my car and called Ethan.

"Changed your mind?" Was the first thing he said when he picked up.

"Amber's been cheating on me."

There was silence for a long moment. "Nile... holy crap."

I didn't say anything as I continued to bite the inside of my cheek.

I could start to taste the blood.

"I'm coming, man."

"No." I said as I started up my car, "I'm coming over to your place now."

Hesitation, "right... oh man, drive safe buddy."

I hung up and sped out of the parking garage.

Thanks to Amber, all of us had to cancel on our tradition for me to spend the last Friday of August freaking out about Amber's unfaithfulness while my two best friends tried to console me.

Though my friends suggested that I didn't go home the next morning... I did.

And surprisingly... or unsurprisingly... she was gone.

-- :) --

The weekend was a bad one.

And then on Monday I was back at work.

I had to do everything I could that Monday morning to force myself to act like nothing happened. To act normal.

To go on with work like I usually did.

But I knew it was going to be hard.

I walked into the elevator just as the doors were closing and was surprised by a new face.

The woman who was definitely a stranger to me gave me a big smile. But I wasn't in the mood for smiling so I just gave her a curt nod.

She was holding a box in her arms and I figured that I was right about her being new, but I chose not to say anything to her.

When I turned around to press the '9' button, it was already red.

Oh, so a new girl on my floor.

Okay.

Hopefully she wasn't an intern that I was going to have to deal with.

I was not in the mood to deal with interns.

The ride up to the ninth floor was quite and when the doors opened, she waited awkwardly for me to step out first.

But I looked at her and gestured to the door with another curt nod.

Just cause I was having a bad day didn't mean I was going to forget my manners.

"Thank you!" She said very happily. A little too happily, if you asked me. Then she walked off.

And my day began... unfortunately for me, I did a horrible job at pretending nothing had happened.
