Miss.Happiness - [Getting the Job]
I sat nervously in front of the CEO's office. My hands were shaking and my heart was racing and my palms were sweating and I felt sick to my stomach.
I've done interviews before. Tons of times. But all of the experiences didn't really help me feel better. It's a lie when they say you can get used to it. I mean, you're meeting with a stranger who's going to judge you on pretty much everything you've done in your life thus far and tell you whether or not you're worthy of joining them in what they're doing. You just can't get used to that.
Well, at least, I can't.
Hi, I'm Melina Natari and I'm a nervous wreck.
Okay, maybe not always but I definitely was right now.
I'm a twenty-two year old girl who just graduated from a great university and was desperately looking for a job.
And that meant that I had done a lot of interviews in the last month or so... but as I said before, those didn't help cut down my nervousness levels.
"Miss. Melina Natari, you can come in." I heard a voice say.
I attempted to gulp back my fear, failed, but got up and walked into the office anyways.
The person sitting behind the CEO sign on the desk was a lovely, but scary looking, woman. She watched me as I walked towards her with her dark, grey eyes but smiled a tiny smile only once I reached out to shake her hand and handed her my folder of things.
Her black hair was slicked back into a bun at the very back of her head and not a single hair slipped out of that bun. Clearly she was a neat woman... and this could also be seen in the fact that there seemed to be nothing out of place in her office.
The second I sat down, she got down to business.
"So, Miss. Natari, welcome to the WorldsAway Company," she said, "my name is Nylah Vancura."
I smiled. "Thank you, and it's a pleasure to finally meet you!"
"Why don't we start off with why you applied to my company?" She held her hands together and placed them over my folder.
"Oh, um..." I took a breath, trying to calm myself down.
I could do this.
I knew I could.
"I've been a part of the WorldsAway community for five or six years now... I'm a big reader. I don't really write but I love to read, so I used your website a lot," I started. "I thought it would be amazing if I could get a job at the company of the website that I spend so much time on. And I really love the concept that your company grew off of... the idea of reaching out to people in need of help through stories. I thought it was a beautiful idea and wanted to be a part of that."
"Yes... I read that in your application." She said as she picked up a paper that was on her desk.
I took a breath, seeing that it was my application.
The truth is... I never imagined that I would get called in for an interview at this company.
In the midst of applying to a bunch of places for a job so I could save up money to return to school and get a Masters Degree, I realized nothing seemed to be for me.
Then my best friends suggested I apply to the company behind the story website that I've spend eighty percent of the last couple years of my life on. I thought it was a genius idea... but then I opened up the We're Hiring page and realized that all the jobs had something to do with computer programming or marketing... both of which I knew nothing about.
After all, I only recently got my undergraduate degree in both Psychology and History.
But then there was a strange option that said: "Apply just because you're awesome."
I know.
Weird.
But hey, I decided to give it a shot and look at me. It landed me here.
In an interview.
"Do you know why we have the option, apply because you're awesome?" Nylah asked, a small smile on her face.
I chuckled, "not really. I figured it has something to do with inspiring you with idea's of what you may need for the company?"
She nodded, "very close," she started, "we have this option because, though we are a fairly popular organization... we are still new. There have been multiple time where I've hired someone for a particular job and realized that there is another position that they are much better at... a position that I had never considered. Basically, I've created positions multiple times in the short span of my company's life and so an option like the one you picked helps make my life easier."
I nodded as she spoke.
"I can read your application and résumé and get a good understanding of the type of person you are and what you could contribute to my company. If there is a position that is suited for you, I will give you that position. If I have to make one to suit you... I will."
I have never heard of this in my life. But that was fine. That sounded awesome.
This company was awesome.
"And as you might be expecting... I read your application and saw that there is a lot you could contribute to my company but a position must be created for you."
No.
I was not expecting that.
I tried not to gawk as she continued to speak.
"The position that myself and my Human Resources team came up with is something that I feel will be suited for you... A Happiness Coordinator."
I blinked. "Umm... I'm sorry?"
She chuckled, "a Happiness Coordinator."
I didn't know if I should laugh or not. Would it be rude? So I just smiled.
She kept smiling. "I'm not surprised that you haven't heard about something like this before," she said, "so let me explain."
I nodded.
"When we read through your application and résumé we were shocked at the amount of work you've put into your community," she started as she opened my folder and looked at my resume, "you've been an active volunteer in a retirement home, a day care, and a hospital... you've worked multiple jobs... waitressing, administration, receptionist, tutoring, et cetera. And what we got from this is that you work very well with people, you're good at organizing your time and you must be excellent at multitasking since you've been doing school along with all of these extracurricular activities."
I nodded again. People have told me that.
"However, we had no job to fit you in, since your forte has nothing to do with computers... but we wanted you, so we created a job for you. The Happiness Coordinator. The job requirements include being friendly, energetic and helpful. Organization, maturity and the ability to be patient. All of which I believe to see in you. What you will be expected to do is to organize events, parties, et cetera for our small company of about a hundred employees. Plan and coordinate the yearly company trip, which previously was done by myself. Also, you must provide help and comfort to any employee that may be swamped with work or just having a bad day. And finally, and most importantly, be a trustworthy friend to the employees who they can all go to in times of need."
My eyes widened.
"You will not be expected to be a Psychologist or a therapist. Just a friend. A good friend. We are a very small company, however we are very popular, as you know. Because of this, things can get very stressful for people and the last thing anyone needs is for stress to build up and affect an employees health and the company itself," she looked at me carefully, "what do you think?"
For a moment, I was lost for words.
"To be honest, the title of the position was inspired by your username on our website." She chuckled as she said it.
My username? Miss.Happiness.
They created a job. For me.
That would be my job?
That was an awesome job!
I could do that!
I wanted to squeal, but I just smiled widely and nodded, "that sounds amazing!"
"So will you take it?"
"Yes!" I said, quickly, "yes, of course!"
"Alright, Miss. Natari. You're hired."
Now I actually gawked. "Wait... already? You're not going to ask questions?"
She shook her head, smiling a small smile. "We knew we wanted you here the second we saw your résumé."
I let out a laugh, trying to hold back my tears of joy. "Thank you!"
After discussing the amazing pay and reviewing the amazing job roles, I was off... onto the subway and on my way home.
When I got home, my roommate and best friend Jade ran towards me, my nine year old baby sister Rovina following behind her.
"Did you get the job?" Jade asked me, eyes wide.
I picked up Rovina, who was staring at me with anticipation.
And then I started screaming. "Yes! I start in a week!"
All of us screamed and jumped up and down for a little while before I explained to them what the job of the Happiness Coordinator was like.
