The Masquerade

Sol helps me tie my mask under my hair and I nervously touch the mask, the silver steampunk design looking different with the dress which resembles a silver pool at my feet. Alena holds up her red and purple mask to her face.

"Sol, can you take a picture of the look on Beckett's face when he sees her? They may need this in the future," Alena whispers loudly to Sol before linking arms with me and looks nervously at the door. "How am I going to tell them about me?" I pat her hand with a hopefully supportive smile.

"However you can and whenever you can...Have you told John?" I ask, realising it hadn't occured to me before and she nods, smiling. "Then it should be easier from now on, right?" She nods and Sol opens the door with a bow for us. We walk out and I see Zacharias wearing a familiar neon yellow suit with an soft orange tie known to universe before seeing Beckett. He's wearing a black suit with a silver tie and a mask that matches mine. My mouth goes dry as he studies me with a smile before walking towards me.

"Beautiful as always," He kisses my cheek, his mask pressing mine in uncomfortably and I rub the side of my face. "Damn, I can't kiss your forehead or cheek the entire night," I frown before he continues with a coy smile, his eyes happy. "Good thing my sister took the night off to see my parents so I can do this all night." Alena and Zacharias cover their eyes as Beckett lifts his mask up a little to kiss me gently and I smile afterwards.

"There are worse things," I whisper, sounding a little hoarse and take his hand before glancing at the others with a happy smile. "Looks like you two are going together alone, you mind?" Zacharias shakes his head while Alena looks miffed.

"I do, he is wearing neon yellow with an orange tie and mask, I mean look!" Alena holds up the mask, glitter falling off and my smile slips fast. I stare at the orange mask with a yellow design as I remember my vision of Zacharias limp in Aloysius' arms wearing the same mask and suit. Beckett touches my cheek.

"I know the rest of his outfit is bad but the mask's alright," He says, looking concerned at me and I nod, forcing a smile. "You two go ahead, we'll catch up." They shrug and walk out without us. I look at Beckett, fear in my stomach.

"Zacharias is wearing what he was wearing in my vision," He looks as scared as I feel and wraps me up in his arms. "I should've told him but I don't know how to explain it to him. I don't think 'I saw you limp in Aloysius' arms' covers why I'm so terrified and how that happens...Or who's responsible for it," I look at Beckett's serious eyes and smile at him before nodding at the sofa. "So we are going to keep an eye on him with a little help from Sol." Sol appears with a raised eyebrow, perching on the arm of the sofa.

"How'd you know I was here, sister?" They ask, still not noticing the glitter on their legs. I point at it and they bat their legs violently. "Oh for fuck sake. Zach may be my best friend but he needs less glitter. Anyway, I'll help keep an eye on him...I just need to get different jeans, go ahead. In case you're wondering, Beckett, it's a family trick. Can't teach it, you have it or you don't." I let Beckett lead me out of the room and to the ball.

---

When we get there, I can hear Unsteady playing and see Cordelia and Xavier open mouth kissing in front of the doors. I share a glance with Beckett as we walk around them and go inside.

"Looks like we didn't need to blackmail them," Beckett mutters smugly as we walk to the edge of the dance floor and see Alena dancing with Zacharias, her looking nervous while he seems to be looking for someone. "Why does Alena look so nervous?" I look at him and take his hand after double checking his sister isn't here.

"You'll find out soon enough," The song ends and Alena drags Zacharias over to us. "Do you want me to stay or go?" She shrugs as I see the most surprising thing I can imagine, Cordelia Carmichael waving me over. I go over hesitantly, expecting one of her long legged friends to strut pass to make fun of me. "Hello Cordelia." She smiles, a genuine, non-bitchy one and offers me her hand.

"Start over? I just found out that I was lied to when I was younger and...I shouldn't have been so horrible to you," I smile and shake her hand. "Before I let you go, is Beckett as sweet as I think he is?" I nod and walk back to an awkward hug between the others before seeing someone staring from a window. Ash. We lock eyes and he looks terrified before raising his finger to his lips. A long moment passes before I nod, hoping that no one else noticed. Don't Give Up On Me starts playing and Beckett gets out of the hug, offering me his hand.

"May I have this dance, belle fille?" He asks, looking as flirty as I've ever seen him and I take his hand, letting him lead me to the dance floor. He puts his hand on my waist and takes my right hand with his left. I follow his lead and he gives me a smile, showing a twinge of fear. "You know how I told you there's someone who falling in love with wouldn't be scary?" I nod, my heart thumping. "The falling wasn't scary but telling you is...I love you, Luna Crescent Moon." The song changes to Silhouette and I smile as we dance like we did the first time we did before bringing my lips to his ear.

"I love you too," I murmur in his ear before pulling away and he kisses me gently. I pull away and look where the others should be to see Alena standing alone. Something must've shown on my face because Beckett follows my gaze and freezes. We hurry off the dance floor and I look around, not seeing Zacharias anywhere. "Where's Zacharias?" Before Alena can utter a word, an alarm goes off and everyone start to hide. Beckett grabs me and Alena before hurrying behind a curtain. "What does the alarm mean?" I ask before seeing how pale the teachers have become as they make sure everyone's hidden. "Why are they so worried?" I whisper as everyone becomes quiet and Beckett brings his lips to my ear.

"It means the Devottees of the Goddess are here," I know what his next words are before he says them...Who the Devottees of the Goddess are. "Your parents' cult." Alena touches my shoulder and whispers, tears going down her face.

"Zacharias went to the bathroom...He's out there." I try to get up and Beckett shakes his head as Professor Balix uses his metal powers to close the door, to keep the cultists out...Keeping Zacharias out as well.
