A Whole New World

Shadows chase a me that isn't me with a white pixie cut. Mirrors show how many join the chase. I blast pure light at them and they blast apart. I look in the nearest mirror and see what I should look like sleeping with my blonde hair in a loose plait. "Wake up, sister." I murmur, hand against the mirror.

I bolt up right, my heart pounding, rubbing my moon birthmark on my left arm. That was a weird dream, no more discussions about what superpower you'd want before going to bed. I get up and stretch before slipping into my workout clothes, going about my morning routine. I brush my hair into a ponytail and put on my earphones as I go for a run. Teenagers plays as I run through the woods, arms pumping, the dream all but forgotten. I stop for a drink of water near the lake and look at my reflection. Someone with my face stares back, a sun birthmark on her arm where my moon one is, her hair white, the girl from my dream. I step back and run back home, ignoring my muscles' complaints. I open my door and slam it after me before removing my earphones. My aunt appears from upstairs, looking annoyed.

"Luna, what have I told you about slamming the door?" I murmur a 'sorry' before looking through the mail on the sideboard under a mirror and see a strange envelope with my full name on it, Luna Crescent Moon. I open it before noticing my reflection in the mirror. The me who isn't me puts her hand on the mirror. I put my hand on the mirror as well. Our hands touch and I fall through the mirror, too surprised to scream. Colours fly by me and I look at the letter in my hand. Words glow black in the darkness and I scream the words, rationality leaving me.

"GLADMELT'S INSTITUTE OF ELEMENTAL MAGICK!" I let go of the letter and colours solidify around me, black and blue...Water. I swim upwards, losing air quickly until a hand reaches in and pulls me out. I land on a riverbank and cough up water.

"Are you alright? Bloody hell, you must be freezing," I blink at the English accent before looking up at a boy at least a year older than me. He helps me up, his brown hair plastered to his pale forehead. "Here, let's get you to the robe fitting...Unless you're don't know what you are." He leads me towards a one story building before I can talk.

"Where are we? I touched a mirror and find myself in a fucking lake," I start to hyperventilate and panic. I look at my hand and count to try and calm down. "One... Two... Three... Four... Five." For once, it doesn't work and the English guy stops walking. He faces me and rests his hand on my shoulder.

"I'm going to help before answering your questions, alright?" He says and I look into his green eyes that make me feel better before nodding. He rests his hand on my chest and before I can get uncomfortable, I start breathing normally. "Alright, you're alright. My name is John. We're at Gladmelt's Institute of Elemental Magick. What's your name?" I lift his hand from my chest and awkwardly smile.

"I'm Luna, is this somewhat like Hogwarts?" He nods and I sigh, my inner fangirl barely contained. "So do I need a wand or broomstick?" He laughs, ruffling his hair.

"I mean, if you were able to control wood or air, go ahead with the broomstick but you don't need a wand," I pout, wishing I did even though I know what a broomstick represents when it comes to witches. "Magic comes from within. Wands aren't needed or exist," I nod, rubbing my arms before John drapes his hoodie over my shoulders. "We're almost there. You'll get dry clothes and a lot more information... Were you working out or something?" I nod, suddenly feeling very self-conscious and pull his hoodie closer.

"Yeah, I had a strange dream and needed to clear my head," I shiver as we reach the building, the air suddenly colder. "Why's it so cold?" John winces before answering.

"There are ghosts everywhere...Including in this building," I nod slowly. "They're the ghosts of former students. Some of which fit your robes and skirt and jumper and shirt." I nod, handing over the hoodie.

"Alright, better go in. Thanks for getting me here, stopping my panic attack and for lending me your hoodie. See you around, John," I wave before going inside and walk down the dark hall with my eyes squinted. I wish I could see. Suddenly light comes from me and I'm too shocked to notice the guy behind me until he runs into me. "Watch it." He raises an eyebrow.

"You were the one who was stopped in a narrow hall," He sounds so haughty that I almost miss his French accent. "Well? Are you just going to stand there and look idiotic or go in?" I smile before standing aside. "Thank you." I grin.

"Of course, I respect my elders," His blue grey eyes narrow and he opens his mouth but not comes out. "Oh, let me get that for you." I close his mouth, sparks where our skin touches. The door opens at the end of the hall, making me step back.

"Are you two here for your robe fitting?" A tall man asks, the room behind him visible through his body. The guy nods, running his hand through his dark blond hair. "Come on then," The guy hurries ahead of me, glancing back at me in a way that makes my heart pound. I look at my hands and see sparks around them. I quickly pat them on my leggings before hurrying after them. A strangely familiar woman stands at a sewing machine with her back to me while the tall man makes the guy stand on a box. "I'm Ike. Miriam will be with you in a sec, love...Have we met?" He  asks and I shake my head as the woman turns around, her ghostly heels quiet. I step back as I basically look at a older version of myself. Miriam covers her mouth.

"You look like me...How..." She trails off as she looks at my birth mark. "Oh." She utters before fainting, or at least the ghostly equivalent.
