Chapter 19: To Tell a Lie
Fright Knight's POV
We landed behind the Prince's school just as the bell rang, signaling the beginning of classes. Danny groaned, "Aw man, Lancer is going to kill me for being late."
"Who is going to kill you?" I questioned as I drew my sword.
The young Prince's eyes widened as he saw the sword, "Easy there big guy, it's just an expression. No one is actually going to kill me. Yet."
He added that last part under his breath, probably not intending me to hear. I watched as two white rings washed over him, reverting him to his human form.
"Remember, stay invisible and don't interfere if I'm getting bullied. Even if there is a ghost attacking, try to keep hidden. I haven't told my friends about all this yet and I intend to keep it that way," the young halfa said before turning to enter the school.
I made myself invisible and phased through the door after him. He was walking down one of the long hallways of the school when a closet door opened and two sets of hands grabbed him, pulling him into the closet.
Danny's POV
I landed on the floor of the closet but quickly got up as I moved into a fighting stance. I was surprised to be staring at my friends Sam and Tucker. "What the heck guys!" I shouted.
"We want answers Danny," Sam said as she approached me.
I lost the stance and rubbed the back of my neck, "I don't know what you mean by that."
"Cut the act dude, we saw you ride into the Ghost Zone with Fright Knight. Do you have any idea how worried we were?! We even went to City Hall and confronted Vlad," Tuck ranted.
"So when Jazz texts us last night saying you were home safe and sound, imagine our suspicions," Sam finished.
I was dreading this conversation. I still didn't want to tell them about me being Prince but it was that or think up one heck of a lie. Just then my phone buzzed in my back pocket. I smiled sheepishly as I pulled it out.
Are you alright in there? Do you need help? -FK a text message read.
Just my friends. I'm fine. I quickly typed back.
"Danny, what's up with you? Your freak out at Nasty Burger, not contacting us all weekend, and now Fright Knight?" Sam questioned.
Truth or lie, truth or lie.
"C'mon man, whatever is going on you can tell us," Tucker said.
"He better tell us," Sam added.
I frowned, "I was fighting Fright Knight and he was able to capture me. I broke free once we were in the Ghost Zone and was able to get away. The reason I haven't contacted either of you was because I had homework and had to go to a dinner party on Sunday," I half lied.
My friends frowned, obviously trying to figure out if I was telling the truth or not. Mentally rolling my eyes, I pushed past them. "Believe me or not, I don't care. But I need to get to class or Lancer will have my hide," I said as I opened the door.
I caught sight of Fright Knight as I left the closet and headed to class. I looked behind me and didn't see Sam or Tucker at all.
End of the day
It was the last class of the day, Science with Mr.Gordan. I was lost in thought as I mixed chemical together at my lab station.
I had avoided Sam and Tucker all day. Whenever we had a class together I would ignore them and the notes they tossed me, and after class or in the halls I would turn invisible and slip away. I hated not telling them but it just seemed like they wouldn't understand. I wonder if-
"MR.FENTON! WATCH WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!" a voice shouted snapping me from my thoughts.
It was Mr.Gordon, he was pointing at my table. I looked down and noticed I had overfilled the beaker and now chemicals had spilled onto the table.
I quickly stopped pouring, "I am so sorry Mr.Gordon. I just-"
"Save it Mr.Fenton. Just go sit at your desk while I clean this up," my grouchy teacher interrupted.
I did as I was told, ignoring the snickering of my classmates. I sat down and rested my head on my arms. 'Ugh, stupid move Danny. Mr.Gordon already hates you for breaking 15 of his beakers last year,' I thought bitterly.
After what felt like forever, the bell rang and I dashed out of the classroom, straight into Dash.
The football jock roughly grabbed the front of my shirt, slightly lifting me off the ground. "Well well well, look what I found. You've been hard to find today Fentoad."
"Eh what can I say, I got a lot of places to be," I replied sarcastically. I was so not in the mood for Dash's dim-witted smack talk. "Well I have your next destination, my fist," Dash said as he got ready for the punch.
I rolled my eyes as I pulled my shirt out of his grasp just as he threw the punch. I ducked down and ran around him towards the back of the school. "FENTON!!" the bully shouted as he pursued me.
I pushed through the crowd all the way to the back entrance. I ran through the doors and hid behind a dumpster, turning myself invisible just for good measure.
Dash busted through the doors searching wildly for me. A few other jocks exited the school trying to help out their fellow bully. "Split up and search for him. The wimp couldn't have gotten far," Dash ordered.
The jocks scattered in all directions leaving the back of the school, bully free. I crept out of my hiding place, dropping my invisibility as well.
"Are you injured sire?" a voice asked. I turned to see Fright Knight floating behind me. "I'm fine, I just want to go home and take a nap," I replied.
"Alright, I will accompany you home but then I must leave you. I must check on the repairs at your castle," Fright Knight informed me.
I nodded, "Great, oh can I ask for a favor?"
"You have no need to ask my Prince. Your wish is my command," Fright Knight said as he bowed.
I raised an eyebrow, "Um ok, could you check up on that little ghost girl I took to the infirmary earlier? Her name is Talia and I believe she is a maid."
Fright Knight nodded. I smiled, "Thanks FK, I owe you one." He waved his hand, as if dismissing my thanks. I transformed into my phantom alter ego and began the flight home.
At the Fenton household
I transformed back to my human self in the alley beside my house and waved goodbye to Fright Knight as he entered a ghost portal.
I walked out of the alley and into my house. My mom was in the kitchen and my dad was sitting on the couch tinkering with another one of his ghost gadgets. Neither took notice of me.
I shrugged and walked up the stairs to my room. I opened my door, throwing my bag beside my desk and flopping on my bed.
"Is that any way to treat a guest?" a male voice asked.
I jumped right out of my bed landing on the floor and hitting my head hard. Ignoring the headache and dizziness, I stood up and let the two white rings wash over me. I searched for the intruder but couldn't see anyone. "Who are you? Show yourself," I demanded.
"If you insist," the voice said.
A ghost shimmered into existence. I couldn't see many of his features because he was wearing a long black robe with the hood pulled low over the his face. Why hadn't he triggered my ghost sense? I readied an ectoblast.
"Who are you?" I questioned.
The ghost removed his hood, revealing a wrinkly old face. His skin was green and his eyes were bright red. He had a scar over his left eye. The ghost also had a short white beard. "My name is Vizier," the ghost said as he slowly floated over to me.
"Pleased to finally meet you Prince Phantom."
