The Day I Fell Out Of The Sky

I don't recommend a free-fall from the height of a mountain. Especially if you can't see where you are falling. Even though all I could see was the strange smoke of the future place, I could feel my body plummeting. Any moment now I'd hit the snow and from that height it might kill me. I tried to return to my body, but the vision solidified in front of me, sinking its hooks in me so that I might see whatever vision a Nikone summoned.

Air rushed around me, but I couldn't go back to my body. Instead, an image of Ellenora and Finn appeared in front of me. My mother was dressed in gold armor and she had a smug grin on her face. Finn had his arm wrapped around her and he looked at a map on a table in front of them.

"You shouldn't go into battle, darling," he said. "Your family will only try and sabotage you to keep you from succeeding."

"I know what I'm doing, dear," Ellenora stroked his face and nuzzled his cheek with her tongue. "It's all planned. We strike when the sun sets. Even if they see me coming, it won't matter. They can't get to Pacifica in time."

Pacifica. A shiver rolled down my spine. That was the other compound. According to Alana, like Redwood, it was working on a skeleton crew, too. If Ellenora's army attacked and the majority of the halfants were on the other side of the continent, the ones at Pacifica would be slaughtered.

"I just want you safe," Finn said. "We both know seeing the future leaves you vulnerable."

I wanted to scream, "No duh!" The air was still whooshing around my body. I probably had seconds before I hit the ground and died.

"I'll be fine," Ellenora said. "After all, I just want to talk to Theresa. She needs me and I need her, after all. She'll come to me."

I crashed into something solid and warm. I didn't know what it was, but it was I knew that I was still alive. At least I wasn't falling anymore.

The vision dissolved, but I was still trapped in this strange smoky place. No matter how much I willed it, I couldn't go back to my body. How did Ric make it seem so easy? He was usually here. Maybe he could help me.

"Ric?" I called into the gloom.

"Theresa Oakeley," came a booming voice. "You were warned to stay away. You call out for a stranger and even he knows his place. You shouldn't come back here. This vision is your final warning."

A chill ran down my spine. Ric had warned me not to attract Tytan's attention. He said that coming here was dangerous.

"I have this power too," I said.

I was proud that my voice was steady. The king of Jontun still scared me. I hadn't forgotten that vision I had where he tried to stab me. Tytan Nikone was more dangerous than my mother and he didn't like to be denied.

"Little girl," Tyan replied. "You're a fool. This is my territory, Miss Oakeley. You need to stay out of this. If you know what's best for you, Theresa, you'll go back to the human world and leave my kingdom in peace."

"Don't mind Daddy," Ellenora's voice spilled into my mind. "My offer stands Theresa. Find me and we can make this all go away. Unless Daddy wants to give me what I want."

My stomach lurched. I could feel Tytan's fury and my mother's madness. Their battle of the wits pressed against my skull and my head ached. I might not be dead yet, but I had a feeling that I was close. It was like staring into the void at the edge of Jontun.

Ric wasn't here to save me this time, and Victor wouldn't get between his father and his sister. I was all on my own and I was completely and totally out of my depth.

"You're no queen, Elle," Tytan said. "And you will never rule Jontun."

Ellenora screamed. My ears rang as she screamed again and again. Tytan roared back, and I wished that I could get out of this freakish future scape.

"You little women will never rule my country," Tytan growled. "So get out of this place before I make sure the next time you fall out of the sky, you'll never get back up again."

With a massive shove from his consciousness, I was hurled out of the smoke. I opened my eyes, and I lay on a metal platform with Ezra cupping my head. Something dripped out of my ears and I sat up and vomited all over the platform.

"Slow down, Terri," Ezra said. "You're bleeding. Take it easy."

I coughed and spit foul tasting bile on the ground. Then I reached up and touched the liquid coming from my ears. My hand came away red. I'd almost died. Tytan had tried to kill me. I was almost certain of that.

My stomach heaved again. Ezra passed me a canteen, and I sipped. As I took in the water slowly, the chaos on the platform all around me came into focus.

Halfants were taking off. Tyler was barking orders as an older woman leaned over Carisma, who was cradled in her brother's arms. Bryan was talking to Alana and Ashton. No one looked happy.

"I-I think I know where the giants are," I said.

"Slow down," Ezra said. "Dalia will check you over as soon as she's inspected Carisma. I caught you before you hit the ground."

"No." I pushed him away and tried to stand. "You don't get it. I know where all those giants went."

"Terri, you passed out from the altitude," Ezra said. "It happens. The air around Snowdon Compound isn't the easiest to breathe."

"I had a vision," I said. "And I need to talk to a commander."

Ezra shook his head in disbelief. "I think I need a medic over here."

A young woman with freckled light brown raced over. Her black textured hair was pulled into a puff at the nape of her neck. She frowned at me as she examined the blood coming from my ears.

"My name is Arlie," she said. "I'm one of the medics from Redwood. Can you hear me?"

"Of course I can hear you," I said. "I need to talk to the commanders. I had a vision, and it's important."

"What's wrong with you eye?" Arlie frowned. "It's gold, and the other is blue."

"My name is Terri Oakeley and I can see the future," I said. "Now can I please talk to a commander?"

"The Oakeley princess?" Arlie frowned. "Ezra, why is she here? What is going on?"

I pushed Ezra and Arlie out of the way. Ezra tried to grab me, but I twisted his arm and pushed him back. Then I ran across the platform to Alana, Ashton, and Bryan.

"I know where the army went," I said. "They're going to attack Pacifica."

Bryan turned to look at me. For the first time in the presence of a halfant, I was actually nervous. He was taller than me by at least three inches and his entire body was corded muscle like a bodybuilder. One of his eyes was silver, and the other was brown, just like Japhros, which probably meant that his muscles weren't for show.

"Hello, Miss Oakeley," he said. "It's a pleasure to meet you at last."

"Mr. Bryan, they're going to attack Pacifica," I said. "The whole army. My mother. They're going after Pacifica Compound."

"Pacifica?" He frowned. "How do you know this?"

"She can see the future," Alana said. "And I'm willing to bet since Ezra just rescued her from a fall out of the sky, she just saw something important."

"My mother wants to talk to me," I said. "And she told me where she'd going to be. It's the only warning we have."

Ashton shifted on her feet. "How many soldiers are at Pacifica currently?"

"Not enough," Bryan sighed. "Twelve and Lyssa. Do you know how long we have Miss Oakeley?"

"They're attacking at sunset," I said.

Bryan cursed. "I'll get the other commanders on the line. Alana, get a team of ten together. Fly out to Pacifica and maybe with full winds you might get there in seven or eight hours. Maybe that saves it."

"Are you sure?" Alana asked.

"Make it happen," Bryan said. "I'll make sure Tyler has everything organized here and join you. Ashton, tell Lyssa you're coming and tell her about the attack. We need to be wings up in twenty minutes."

I looked Alana in the eye. "I'm coming."

It wasn't a question or an offer. There was no way I was missing this. My mother had asked to see me and if I could somehow broker peace, no one else had to be hurt.

Granted, I didn't trust my mother. She'd moved her entire army and left Carisma alone in a tent. Everyone said that Ellenora was unhinged and crazy. She'd tried to get me to tell her where my brother was through terror and intimidation—a brother that didn't exist.

Alana smiled. "You're coming. I'm pulling the rest of the Redwood members that are here and we're going straight to Pacifica."

With that, she walked into Snowdon Compound. I was tired and stressed and I wasn't sure that I could fly for another eight hours, but I had to try. My mother couldn't bully the halfants like this. Her fight was with the king.

My thought was broken by a shout at the other end of the platform. Arlie was holding back Moreno as his sister was loaded on a stretcher. The older woman who was the doctor was trying to explain something to Moreno, but he looked furious.

"Moreno, control yourself." Bryan's order was loud and silenced the platform.

I followed the commander across the platform. Moreno pulled loose from Arlie's grip and whirled on the older doctor. He looked about ready to sock her in the face.

"They can't take her," he said.

Bryan raised an eyebrow. "Dalia is the doctor, Moreno. Whatever she says goes."

"I just got her back," Moreno said. "Bryan, she can't go ground side by herself."

I wrapped my arm around Moreno. His body was shaking with fear and anger. I tried to calm him down, but he was so tense and his fury was so palpable that it was practically radiating off him.

"Carisma needs an MRI and a scan of her arm," Dalia said. "I can't treat her until we make sure she's sound. Arlie and I will accompany her ground side and we'll bring her back as soon as we can. I've already ordered a chopper to take us to the hospital when we're through the portal."

"Then I want to go," Moreno said. "She's my sister. I'm her only family."

"There simply isn't enough room in the chopper," Dalia said. "And you would just be a pacing set of feet in the waiting room."

Bryan crossed his arms. "We need you here, Moreno."

I wrapped my arms around him tighter as he looked at the commander with hate in his eyes. Moreno looked at his sister one more time and then I forced him to look me in the eye. He had to calm down.

"Please," he said. "Let me go."

"I can't," Bryan said. "I need you to go with Terri and Alana to Pacifica."

"Pacifica?" Moreno frowned.

"The giants are attacking Pacifica at sunset, Jordan," I said. "I saw it in my vision when I fell. We have to stop Ellenora."

He was quiet for just a moment. "Okay."

"Just like that?" It surprised me how easy that was.

"If your mother is attacking Pacifica, we have to stop her," he let go of me. "I won't let Ellenora hurt you or anyone else."

"Then that's settled," Bryan said. "Tell your sister goodbye and you'll leave when Alana returns with the rest of the team."

Moreno nodded and pressed a kiss on my forehead. Then he walked over to the stretcher and took his sister's hand. I moved to follow him, but Bryan caught my shoulder.

"We have some things we need to discuss," he said. "I see you are rather close with Moreno."

"Yes," I said. "We're together."

"Just don't let it distract you," Bryan said. "Or him. He has a job. Moreno is one of my best soldiers. He lacks discipline, but he's learning. I don't want you to derail that, Miss Oakeley."

"I won't," I said. "And I love Moreno."

"And he loves you," Bryan said. "It's obvious. He didn't sock you in the jaw when you called him Jordan. Be careful when you see your mother. She's playing a game that none of us really understand. Don't trust the Nikones, even if they are your family."

With that ominous warning, he walked into the compound. I looked over my shoulder at Moreno. He whispered something to Carisma and then locked eyes with me. I gave him a soft smile, and he walked across the platform to take my hand.
