Chapter 20 Winter Soldier
The instant we entered the quinjet, Skye grabbed a bottle of water and took some painkillers. She sat down in the seat behind the pilot's chair and leaned back. "Wake me up when you need me to hack something," she groaned.
Steve sat down in the pilot's chair and I sat as co-pilot. It was a little awkward for me to use any of the controls since I only had one arm now. I started to reach for one of the buttons, but a grinding from what remained of my metal arm reminded me that I couldn't do that.
Steve looked over at me. "You good there, buddy?"
"I don't know if 'good' is a word we can use in this situation, but I'm fine," I replied.
Steve chuckled. "Fair point. You still remember how to fly one of these?"
"We're getting close," Steve said. "Wake Skye up, she'll have to move up to where you are now."
I got up and walked over to Skye. The annoying screech was my reminder once again and I touched her shoulder with my right hand. "Skye, we need your genius."
Skye opened her eyes and looked up at me. "My genius? Oh yeah, I suppose... What's it needed for?"
"We're saving the rest of the team," Steve said.
Skye stood up and winced. "Okay. I'll make sure we stay undetected," she said as she made her way over to the co-pilot seat and sat down. "I'll have us in shortly."
Several different squares appeared on the windshield as Skye started hacking into the underwater prison. I watched her work, not understanding anything that popped up around her half of the windshield. Her eyes constantly flicked between the windshield and her tablet. A grin spread across her face as she worked.
I couldn't help but smile too. She looked so comfortable like her pain was forgotten. After several moments, she leaned back with an even larger smile. Pride shone in her eyes. "We're in," Skye said cheerfully.
Steve glanced over at her with a smile. "If you could raise it out of the water so we can land that would be great."
Skye leaned over her tablet, which seemed to be what she used for everything, and started typing again. A moment later, a circle of the water started to rise up in front of us. It was a huge metal base. Water poured off the edges as it rose higher. The top of it started to open to reveal a landing pad for quinjets.
I put my hand on Skye's shoulder. "Nice work, Techy."
Skye looked up at me, still grinning. "Thanks!"
Steve maneuvered the quinjet onto the landing pad. Skye got to her feet and walked to the back. I followed behind her as she pressed the button to open the back. The engines purred to a halt and Steve stepped up behind us.
"It seems like the only people here are the guards," Skye said. "We'll have to knock them out to get past. Buck, I'd be careful if I were you."
I nodded. I couldn't be much help if I continued to forget I was missing an arm. Steve readjusted his shield.
"I'll go first," Steve said. "You two come behind."
As Steve walked toward the only door while the roof closed over us, I turned to Skye. "So how does your tablet do everything?"
Skye grinned at me. "Ah, the joys of unlimited data and having a wifi spot connected to my tablet at all times. Plus having my amazing hacking skills, I can hack into any wifi in the area and use it. This place, for instance, has some absolutely wonderful high-speed internet."
I chuckled a little at her enthusiasm. "That's pretty handy."
"No kidding," Skye said, laughing.
Steve poked his head back out. "I got all the guards taken care of. If you two are ready."
