Chapter 2 Captain America
Tony was arguing with someone again. I couldn't hear what they were arguing about from where I stood, but I knew it was Tony and someone I didn't know.
I walked into the room. Tony fell silent when he saw me as did the young woman. The silence was tense and furious.
"What's going on here?" I asked. "Tony? Why is she here?"
Tony looked like he was about to explode. "She broke in! In broad daylight!"
"I did not 'break in'!" the woman objected, her gray eyes glaring daggers at Tony. "You can't call it that when the doors are unlocked."
"They were locked!" Tony growled. "I did it myself!"
"Calm down both of you," I ordered. Tony crossed his arms and continued glaring, while the woman smirked. I turned to her. "Why are you here?"
"I want to help you," she said simply. When Tony snorted disbelievingly she gave him an exasperated look. "You can stop now. Anyway, I thought you might want another tech person."
I tilted my head, considering her offer. It was true, are computer people weren't as good as they could be. "What's your name?"
"Skye Allen."
"And how did you know about us needing help?"
A smile appeared on her face. "Computer magic. I should tell you though, I won't be around forever. I'll stay for a while but I'm on a U.S. tour as a break from building a Particle Accelerator. You have been warned."
"Thank you," I said. When she wasn't shouting she was a nice person. "I'm Steve Rogers, this is Tony Stark."
Skye nodded at Tony much more politely than I thought necessary, which told me that she didn't like him much and her tone made that much more solid. "A pleasure..." she said, resting her hand protectively over the leather bag that hung at her side. "Which of you will be showing me where I set up my tech?"
Tony shook his head and walked away. I smiled. "Not him. This way."
Skye followed me silently to an office right next to mine. I stood to the side of the door and she walked in, studying the room carefully. "And what shall I do first?" she asked, looking to me for direction.
I got the strong feeling that she would do almost anything I told her to and that I could trust her. I paused anyway though. Unsure if my idea was a good one. "Gather anything you can on James Barnes. He's... he's an old friend of mine."
An unidentifiable expression crossed Skye's face. "Alright Captain."
I stared at her and she grinned mysteriously. She placed her bag on the desk and started emptying it. Within seconds, two laptops, three tablets, and a smart phone were propped up around her. She looked from one screen to the next, typing furiously. I smiled and left her to do whatever she was doing.
I stopped at my office space for my shield on my way to the exit. While Skye used the computer to find my friend, I would use the streets.
I pushed my shield into the large bag I'd attached to my motorcycle. I got on and started my search in the alleys before moving on to the busy streets.
I passed by a Holiday Inn hotel and thought I saw Bucky, wearing a black leather jacket and gloves, leaving the building. I circled around the block, but by the time I reached the same place, he was gone. I'd been so close.
I drove around all of the blocks in the area. There was no sign of Bucky anywhere. The phone Natasha had insisted I learn how to use buzzed in my pocket as I parked in front of the hotel. I fished the phone out of my pocket and turned it on.
I'd gotten a text. Thankfully I knew how to look at it and respond. It came from a number that hadn't been added.
Hey there Captain. I think I've got something. ;)
I assumed it was Skye. I wondered how she'd gotten my number, which only the team knew. She must have asked one of them.
I took the quickest way that I could find back to the S.H.I.E.L.D. building that we used as a headquarters.
When I arrived and walked through the door Skye was already waiting for me with a tablet under her arm. I was surprised that she'd come all the way down to wait. She noticed me and took the tablet out from under her arm and turned it on as I made my way toward her.
"What did you find?" I asked, looking at the screen upside down.
"Come where you can see it," Skye said. She tapped the screen twice and looked up at me seemingly satisfied with what it was showing.
I moved to her side and looked at the screen. A picture of the Holiday Inn was in the upper right hand corner of the screen. The rest of the screen was a video, likely taken from one of the security cameras. I saw myself drive by on the street as Bucky came out the door.
Skye paused the video and looked at me apologetically. "This is all I could come up with. Sorry. I'm sure you know that he was there already. You go by twice in the video. I didn't notice that until after you parked your motorcycle outside."
I met her eyes. "Don't worry about it. Just keep watching that camera. He might go back."
"That's the place I'm staying," she added with a frown.
I got the strong feeling that she was hiding something. Had she seen him, but wasn't telling me? Maybe she just wanted to make sure it was the right person before she said anything. Choosing the latter as the one I believed, I smiled at her. "Maybe you'll run across him sometime then. If he's staying there as well."
Her smile was a little strained when she returned it. I could only guess what it meant.
