The Hacker: Chapter 15

I stumbled back from the creature, who simply drifted closer. On his face was a hell-fire smirk, as he gave a subtle wave. The stone around me becoming wrapped in the magenta light of psychic power. The boulders trembled and caved in, blocking any attempts of escape for me.

Sweat raced down my forehead, my eyes never moving from the clone. But my joints stiffened on their own, fingers twitching with anxiety.

"You don't seem too happy to meet me," the clone projected into my mind. My heart thumped as the feeling of invasion hung over me. This creature had killed many people. Had been tortured. Had no empathy left to spare. I was petrified by this thing, yet found the guts to spit.

I took in a shivering breath, fingers running over my team. Despite the fear that writhed inside me like a monster, I still was able to mumble a snarky remark with a smirk plastered to my face. Like if I wasn't smirking, I'd fall apart, "No, I never really am when meeting a psychopathic clone."

The purple being wrinkled his nose to me in disgust, "What a crude way of addressing me!"

"Well, how would you like to be addressed?" I retorted, constantly repeating to myself to stray from getting on his bad side. My mind reeling on any way to escape.

The clone flicked his thick tail with impatience, the pokemon's shoulders were rolled back while his muzzle was pointed down to me. A sign of superiority. I rose to the balls of my feet and pointed my nose into the air, swallowing my fear, "Address me as Mewtwo. The others did. It is what I know."

"Fine, Mewtwo," I snarled, hoping my heart couldn't be heard.

His smirked, "Don't have to be so afraid. I'm not going to kill you, Leaf. That is not going to be my responsibility."

"Oh, thanks. Because that's just so comforting," the psychic type let his body fall from his drifting so that his two-toed feet would press into the moist cave floor. The creature towered a 1.3 feet above me, stiffening his spine to give him another inch to loom, "Why have you been waiting for me?"

I could send out Pidgeot and Vaporeon to destract Mewtwo for about... ten seconds? In that time, I'd send out Marowak and Hitmonchan to shatter the rocks that block our exit. They could definitely demolish the boulders in less than five. Giving the me, after return time, three seconds to get out of here. In that case, keep Vaporeon out to keep Mewtwo at bay as we both run.

"That will not work, Leaf. You do underestimate me so," The monster poured into my head, causing my hands to clench. I was terrified that he was in my head. That he was so powerful. Mewtwo sneered down, his monstrous voice rolling though my head, "I have a proposal."

"Why should I listen to you?"

"Why shouldn't you?"

"For one, you're a murderer," I stated loudly, fingers brushing my pokeballs, preparing to draw Venusaur for a battle. "Go, Pidgeot and Vaporeon!"

The two pokeball was propelled in the air, tumbling out in spins before freezing in mid-throw. they became engulfed in a violet glow, the capsules were shrunken before harshly tossed back. I caught the two, by some miracle. I tried pressing the center button to release my pokemon, but the attempt was in vain. Nothing was working. The spheres simply shook violently back and forth, but not to come out.

They all must have been terrified too.

The rest of my pokeballs joined in with the vibrating, all quickly being minimized in size by Mewtwo's power. I reluctantly placed Venusaur back and glared, "Child, you really underestimate me," glancing at some pokeball on my belt, his broken grin grew. "This should be fun watching..." Moving his eyes back to me, he fell seldom.

"I am not going to listen to a murderer like you."

"Murderer? You're calling me a murderer? A murderer is someone who simply killed one man," he spoke, as if I somehow wounded his pride. "I have killed so many more. Not just the laboratory workers. I have killed those who had it coming. Ever wondered what happened to Team Rocket after Red defeated them? How, on your journey, they were miraculously... Elusive? My doing. And I got so many more who deserve it, all of them"

"What the hell are you?" I cracked, feeling the weight of killing as if I were the one who took their lives. My body curled in on itself, my heart fluttering with both exhilaration and terror.

He smiled. Just smiled, "I will phrase this in a way you might understand: 'Tuer un homme, et vous êtes un meurtrier. Tuer des millions d'hommes, et vous êtes un conquérant. Tuez-les tous, et votre un dieu.' "

"'Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you're a god'. Jean Rostand, from Thoughts of a Biologist or also known as: Penées D'un Biologiste." I translate, well aware of the quote, being an avid reader of Rostand. He was a science writer, born in Paris on October 30th, 1864. Translating his works from French was easy since I studied numerous of the Romantic languages.

Mewtwo nodded, "I do know your world's culture. I will say now: I am neither Murderer, too far past. Nor conqueror, too far behind. I am somewhere in between. Now that I have answered your question, I will continue."

I stayed silent, not going to agree but not going to decline. Silence is a good default.

"A god..." Mewtwo Breathed, gaze frosting over before snapping to me in agitation. "That's what they wanted me to be right? A god. The strongest. Those scientists wanted me to be the strongest of all! If they truly succeeded, then I will prove it. Oh Leaf, It won't be a simple murder streak like in the past. It will be an annihilation. Listen to my words," his last sentence dragged out as the room chilled.

I did what any true scientist would do, questioning everything. "What if I don't listen to you?"

"If you don't? If you don't?" his tone grew with his feral snarls, his mauve eyes narrowing with fiery rage. It wasn't the cold hatred I saw before, "The question is if you do. If you do listen to me, no one will die by my hands. Would that not that be nice? If you do not, I will kill them all. I will force you to stand and watch as I take up my first two victims. The ones who are closest to your heart. I will hold Blue and Red, slowly torturing them--- melting their brains with all the secrets and darkness they hold. Do not doubt those two do not carry those. Red and Blue bear those on their shoulders the most. You will watch them suffer, unable to stop their bitter agony, as much as you wish you could. And I don't want to hear you say that they do not matter to your heart. I can read you like a book."

My hands balled themselves into fists, nails digging deep into my skin as I heard tell to this. Maybe I should have asked why he was telling me this all. But it was obvious. At that point, I wished I had never made any ties to this world.

MewTwo saw my guilt, my anger, my terror. And he snickered darkly before continuing to pull his words. "Then the rest. You cannot stop me Leaf," His hand reached out to my face. I couldn't retract, just feel his inhuman fingers graze the side of my face threateningly. "I was made to be the most powerful. And I am not afraid to prove it. And I will have no regrets killing all of them. Humans are selfish and arrogant and conceited and vile. Really, all they think about are themselves, never the ones around them. Those scientists wanted the glory of creating me, and so they did. Torturing a child and countless pokemon used for DNA testing. Casting out the failures as if they were never there to begin with. And what about Blue? He seemed to never care for your obvious feelings as he trampled on them to get his way. What he wanted. Taking you on a date as a--- test? Dragging you into this world? Vile. You--- you are no different. Destroying a world with hacks. You were going to leave Red stranded on a mountain, alone. Without even his pokemon, always taking, ruin a person's life just so you can go home. A home which you hate, but cannot restrain to love. To a woman who either overcast and controlled your life, or forgot about it all together. You are disgusting."

I know! I know what I've done! No need to remind me. I shouted in my head, receiving a crooked smile from Mewtwo who invaded my perceptions. I could feel my heart skip a beat before I pressed with a new question, "What about Red? Why would you kill him? I saw the memories. How you protected him, how he was kind to you more than anyone else. Why kill him?"

Mewtwo suddenly grimaced, his icy hatred becoming ruthless, "Because he left me. He was the most selfish of all. He never came back after so long. I waited for him in that, as you call it, pokemon mansion for him to return one day. He never did. When he left I took everything upon my shoulders--- pain, agony, blood... and now I am going to give it back. He was no friend of mine," the clone's eyes flashed a deep abyss before returning to what they were before. "Humans will be annihilated, unless you do what I say," he changed back to his original point.

"Wh-what do I have to do?" I stuttered after a long period of silence.

"First," the pokemon looked satisfied with itself as I answered, "do not complete your mission as it must. Blue will give you your real laptop in time to remove the hacks. When you have attained Mew in its true form, do not remove it. You will bring my original here, to me. Plain and simple. Remove all the other hacks you need and return home. Leave the game. I will keep my bargain."

I rose an eyebrow curiously, if not suspiciously, "How does that make any difference?"

"They created me to be a god," the clone yet again repeated to me arrogant himself. "Mew is a god. If I kill it, then I have the strength of one. It is proven. No need for any more bloodshed. And I destroyed the final hack. Mew has been nothing but an insufferable little pest in my existence. Handing it over to me is reallythe best option. And--- after all of this, you can forget. Forget this world, even your own once you return. You can start anew. I will even gift you amnesia if that is what you want before leaving."

To forget. To forget Blue, the one who made my heart break at a glance. Forget Red. The one who I betrayed. Forget this world which had no sense. And even be able to forget my mom and the world I grew up in. For some reason, it seemed so tempting, "Just... Give you Mew?"

"I wouldn't dawdle either."

"Why, is there a time limit on your deal?"

"No, no. Just on this world," the clone motioned with his arm around him, his stare off into the distance of the cavern.

"What?"

The genetic pokemon sharply twisted his head towards me with a scrutinizing front, "Do not tell me Blue has not told you?" seeing my expression, he laughed like a flock of Murkrow, "He has not? You have not even noticed the changes? Oh! This is precious, too precious! The genius has not figured it out! Ever saw the small error, a move repeating? Or a pokemon learning an attack it should not in the first generation? What about that odd looking thing in the corner of your eye, but when you turn to look at it--- there is nothing there? How about--- a golden bridge corroding? I see it in your eyes. You found that impossible. It is real gold, and it really is breaking down. The numbers that make up this world are falling to pieces. Your hacks are dismantling it. They were never meant to be part of the programming, so things are breaking apart. It has created--- The Glitch."

He continued his newest monologue with a dark tone, yet a flicker of joy in his mauve-hues, "A storm of numbers and codes turning any place or thing it happens to festers into be a cesspool where nothing can escape. Crushing it all. Much like a black hole would. And every NPC in this world knows about it. They know the hacks did this. They know the player did this. Once they lose their homes, their loved ones, things that matter to them--- they will hate you. Can you bear that? The death of people and pokemon? Do not tell me this is just a game, I can see your heart Leaf Verde. You act numb like nothing is real and it shouldn't phase you, but it does. Since you came, you began to feel again. Terrifying right? Imagine, all of them hating you. You caused the deaths."

"How many people know?" My throat closed with saliva that built up, "How many know that it's me?"

"It was just Blue and I. Now, Red is part of that. But no one else. Not even your mother," he looked down to me with a demeanor of disgusted pity. "I will warn you, the glitch swells every day, swallowing more in all different locations. It's been wiping out land right under your nose. You just did not look down to see it. Refugees fill cities where the glitch has not reached. Your time is simply limited before the glitch takes this world."

Silence. How could I not have ever noticed the small things? I did. I just never put two and two together. All of this world can be gone in a short time, destroyed by what I once believed to be my only friend (numbers).

"Now hurry!" Mewtwo pressed his fingers together with a maniacal grin painted on his human-esce face. "My, this does not look very bright does it? If you follow your mission, I will kill everyone. If you don't follow mine fast enough--- the glitch will. And even now, people hate you! And they will hate you more if any of the other two options occur. How delightful! Now go, bring me Mew."

I nodded helplessly before turning out. A power wrapped its grasp around me, paralyzing my muscles from moving any further.

"Oh, and Leaf?"

"... Yes?" I trembled out.

I couldn't see him, but I knew he was smiling like the devil, "Do not tell a soul about this little encounter. Or what has went down. You will wish for help to get out of this somehow, of course. But if you do tell someone, the deal is shattered. I will hear every single thought of yours, each word that spins from your mouth. You tell anyone, and I will come and bring hell on Earth."

"Mewtwo?"

"Yes, my dear Leaf?"

I bore cold eyes to him as I said, "How do I know you aren't lying? How do I know that, even if I bring you Mew, you won't still kill everyone?" The word 'kill' had me choked for a moment as the creature cocked its misshapen head at me.

A tiny smile perked at his lips, "You do not."

The domination over my body was dropped as were the rocks that blocked my path. I gave a shaking nod of my head before dragging myself from the cave.

My movements felt lucid after that, or maybe Mewtwo was controlling me and I was never released. Anyhow, I found myself in the next moments pacing up the Cerulean Cape; the one meadow-cliff off-look near Bill's House.

The dark blades of grass whipped at my legwarmers while Delphinium flower rods reached up to sway in the mornings breath. From the horizon of the ever changing ocean the sun broke. It's fiery blaze of lights mingling with the night's last standing deep blue of midnight. The image was reflected back on the ocean as I paced to the metal railing where a dew still clung.

My fingers wrapped around the cold steel as I bent over my torso across the bar. I let out a scream as loud as I could, the sound waves carrying on the ocean ones. I screamed and screamed. All the fear, rage, sorrow and emotion that bottled up within that cave exploded out into rolls of my roar.

Even when I stopped, the echo just continued and I stood to listen.
