Chapter 8//The Broken Soldier
I shift around uncomfortably in the HYDRA uniform, running over the plan in my head. Just a few days ago our plane had landed, and we launched into Phase 1 of our plan: Infiltrate HYDRA by being HYDRA. It was a simple plan, but it would work.
Luckily for me, I remember most of HYDRA's protocols considering I worked here for 70 years.
"Sergeant Collins, please head upstairs to the control deck where you'll be stationed for the next few weeks," Colonel Forde orders as I nod, my back stiff as I head up the stairs. Tony is playing prisoner to HYDRA, Kristina is in the Field Op Sector, and Brent is in the Science and Technology quarter. I frequently kept getting switched around.
I walk down the long stone hallway, the only sound is my footsteps and the patter of leaking water hitting the ground. My mind was set on finding out where the mutants were and reporting them to Kristina who could go and get them. Brent would be creating an explosive to blow the building when we leave so we can take care of at least one-fifth of HYDRA.
I come to the end of the hallway where I see a set of steel doors. Taking out my HYDRA key card, I swipe the scanner pad and walk inside. Four other males are monitoring the base as I set myself down at one of the chairs farthest away from peeping eyes.
A set of three computer monitors separated into four squares in each is in front of me. A keyboard and two control pads are on the table. The control pads appear to be for making calls and controlling all the entrances and exits for intruders. Or spies like myself.
For the next hour, I frequently search through each and every camera to try and see where the mutants were being kept hidden. The fact that it was taking me an hour was worrying me. Did I bring us to the wrong base? Was this facility really this huge? Or was something else up. I came across the camera into the Field-Op sector where I could see Kristina was practicing against another female. The female has the looks of someone who lured the men in by their body but then killed them before it went too far. I was worrying Kristina would get hurt, that is until I watch as the girl swings her fist, Kristina snatching it before it hit her. She twists the fist until the girl cries out in pain, before kicking her legs up and wrapping her feet around the girl's neck, flipping her around to the ground. I almost want to jump up and cheer.
Another camera shows Brent in a lab, putting pieces together to create a bomb. We all agreed a bomb would be the easiest to hide but the quickest to use. A man approaches Brent, and it appears as if he's asking him a question. My stomach drops hoping Brent can slip his way out. Luckily he does, acting for once in his life professional.
Tony sat quietly in a cell, not a very sturdy one, but a prison cell. Tony's job was to get a key card from one of the guards, which I could see his eyes were calculating right now. What was not surprising was his usual sarcastic comments driving the guards insane.
A screen catches my eye. I look to the far left monitor to see a steel door. Nothing special about it, nothing different. Except for the fact it seems more heavily guarded then all the others. One of the higher ranking HYDRA agents exits, and I catch a glimpse of cages inside. Perfect.
I touch my earpiece that we all distributed before coming here, writing down the location of the door at the same time.
"Agent Mallow, I have the information you were looking for," I whisper through the earpiece, remembering our code names and code words to say that we have found what we needed. Just in case HYDRA was suspicious and was tapping into our earpieces.
"Roger that Agent Collins," Kristina reports back, out of breath. Probably from beating up everyone. "Meet me in the South corridor with the file," she orders. I push my chair back and walk over to the door at the end of the room. I act slower, trying to make it seem natural and not rushed. I swipe my HYDRA I.D. card and exit the control room, taking a sharp right to head towards the South Corridor. Two lefts and one right later I find myself in another stone hallway with leaking pipes and moss growing on the ceiling.
"Agent Collins," Kristina greets, keeping her face stoic. I remind myself to tell her later how she is extremely good at acting like someone else.
"Agent Mallow, what you were looking for," I hand over the paper I wrote on as Kristina's eyes flit over the page.
"Thank you, I'll be headed off now."
"Would you like me to assist you?" I ask, acting casual. Times like these I wish I could act like The Winter Soldier, so I could just beat my way up through the company instead of sneaking around.
"That would be greatly appreciated," Kristina replies cooly. We walk off together, towards the mysterious steel door. We finally find it, sitting at the end of another hallway. This one is more clean, more organized. Kristina approaches the door and slips a disk under the keypad. The scanner beeps and lets out a little smoke. Trust Kristina to break into anything. No surprise she's referred to as the Hacker.
We enter the room, locking the door behind us. I glance around the perimeter and notice one thing different from all the other spaces in HYDRA. There are no security cameras.
"Weird," I speak, Kristina whips her head around, looking at me alarmed.
"What?"
"No cameras, speak our free mind," I answer as Kristina lets out a sigh of relief.
"Going to confess your love to me now?" Kristina jokes as I smile at her.
"You caught me," I hold up my hands in surrender. She shoves me, and I bite my lip to stop from laughing.
"We all know you love me, Barnes," Kristina flirts, crossing her arms. I raise my eyebrow at her. She just stands her ground. Kristina sure is stubborn.
"Correction, I love Stark."
"Knew you two had something going on," Kristina points her finger at me, a smirk on her face.
"I'm kidding," I grin at her.
"I know you are, but am I?" she remarks, walking down a hallway. I follow after her, looking out for the prisoners and for any signs of HYDRA agents. The hall darkens, leaving us looking carefully for any signs. The hallway ends with a simple wooden door. I glance at Kristina curiously, before hesitantly opening it. I walk through and am surprised with what I see.
It's a forest. A full blown forest. Trees are towering above us like skyscrapers, moss hanging low. Mushrooms and flowers are growing in clumps, with ferns in every corner. A river runs through the forest on the right and rocks in piles are on the left.
"What is this place?" Kristina wonders. I look around wide-eyed at the scene in front of me. It couldn't be real. It had to be controlled, or just a hologram. Something tugged at my heart though. This is where the mutants were, I could feel it. Now we just had to find them.
"Come on," I order.
"What?! Where are we going?" Kristina breaths, running to catch up with me.
"I know they're here, I can feel it. Hiding probably," I reply. Kristina doesn't say anything, just follows my lead.
We walk for a while, jumping over tree roots, ducking under low hanging tree branches. Its surprisingly peaceful, the sound of running stream water and the fresh, serene trees and plants create a feeling of calm. A feeling that neither Kristina or I have felt in a while.
I would've never gone as far as to foil HYDRA's plans if it wasn't for Steve. I might not have my entire memory back, but I remember enough to know my love for the frozen man. I protected Steve like a brother, I basically was Steve's brother. And to see that I failed in my duty to do that, makes me want to take down the barrier in between them and get his pal back.
I never really asked about why Kristina wanted to destroy HYDRA. I never wondered, until now.
"Kristina?" I ask as she looks up at me.
"Yeah?" Kristina jumps over a root, her brown hair blowing behind her.
"Why do you want to destroy HYDRA?" I gulp, not knowing how she'll take the question.
"Why would you care?"
"I care about you Kristina, a lot, I hope you realize that. I want to know why you're putting your life in danger," I answer honestly, just to see Kristina's shocked expression when I admitted my feelings for her.
"I'll tell you if you answer me one thing," Kristina offers, as I nod my head for her to continue. "What you truly feel about me, this whole adventure hasn't really provided time for us just to be normal. All we've been doing is fighting the big fight, but even then I still want to know," Kristina speaks. I nod my head again, agreeing to her payment. She takes a deep breath, tucking a strand of loose brown hair behind her ear. Her wide brown eyes look at me, the fear in them is evident.
"You don't have to tell-"
"I do though. I owe you that," Kristina sighs, playing with her hands as if it will distract her.
"When I was little, I lived in Brooklyn, New York with my parents. They were always busy, but on weekends and during the holidays I was able to spend time with them. I had a little sister named Olivia, and we were all one big happy family."
"I never knew what my parents did for a living, I always thought they were lawyers or something."
"Well one day, it was Christmas and Olivia, and I sat downstairs under the tree. I remember it clearly. I was wearing black and blue polka dot pajama pants and a white t-shirt with stains on them. I was 12 at the time, Olivia was 6, and she was in her usual cotton nightgown. I was unwrapping one of my presents, slowly and tediously like I usually did when there was a knock at the door. My parents got up and opened it, both of them walking outside. A smell came through the door, the smell of salt. The smell of blood."
"A couple minutes later there was a scream, Olivia and I both looked up curiously at each other, we had no idea was going on. Then the door burst open, and my Mom came running in. I thought she was running to grab us, but she ducked to the left and knocked down a brick of the fireplace, grabbing a 2-millimeter gun and firing it out the door."
"She was yelling at us, "KRISTINA! OLIVIA! DO WHAT WE TOLD YOU!" her last words, because just a second later a shot came back through the door and lodged deep inside her skull. Olivia screamed, causing more men, soldiers, to march through our doors. I tried to drag Olivia to the closet where my parents had a safe room, but she wanted to see if Mommy would wake up if she would laugh and say it was a joke. Olivia was stronger than me, and out of nowhere, a soldier grabbed her and putting both hands on her head, snapped her neck in half."
"I screamed and ran into the closet, closing the door and locking it. The men tried to knock it down, I wouldn't let them. I pressed the big red button on the left side of the door, and a couple minutes later the soldiers were gone. A man opened the door, he said he was Nick Fury. I believed him. He had on a black trench coat and big black boots, his head cleanly shaven and an eye patch to match his dark skin tone. A scar ran under his eye."
"My Mom always said that if I were in trouble, trust a man named Director Fury. She had taught me how to know if someone was lying, and he wasn't. Nick wasn't lying. He took my hand and led me outside and into a nice black car. I passed my father lying dead on the pavement."
"Nick told me my parents were top SHIELD agents, agents that worked well for their country. He told me I would be ok, I would be fine. He left me with a children's home for orphaned children of SHIELD. I was lonely there, the only way I could pass the time was by computers. I learned quick how to hack. No one knew I went by a code name. The Hacker and I got so good at hacking that no one ever knew a 15-year-old girl was stealing money from governments everywhere and implementing them into charities."
"One day I came across my parent's file, and I opened it, and I almost fainted in shock. I learned who my parent's killers where. HYDRA. HYDRA killed my parents, and my sister, and on Christmas too."
"So when I got out of that home when I turned 18, I set my life to avenging them. I had too. Not just because they killed my parents, but they murdered a young child. That's why I'm looking for HYDRA Bucky because I need to watch them suffer. I need to watch them suffer for what they did,"
Kristina was bawling. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her body shook as she muttered words of vengeance. I was shocked. I wasn't expecting that story, I wasn't expecting that pain. Kristina was shaking vigorously, she wouldn't be able to stand much longer. I step closer to her and hold her in my arms as she cries into my shoulder, clutching on to me like a lifeline.
"Shh, its ok," I whisper to her, finding my heart in the midst of this battle. Kristina continues crying. I let her. We just sit there on the ground, with Kristina crying like a broken soldier.I guess she kind of was, watching her family murdered before her and then being thrown amongst other broken soldiers.
Still, even with her red eyes and tear-streaked face, she was still beautiful.
"Why do you even like me Bucky? Why?"
"Why wouldn't I?"
"I'm a monster, I let my six-year-old sister die. I didn't even do anything, I just ran," Kristina breaths, the tears still flowing.
"Your not a monster. What were you supposed to do? Get yourself killed too? Your parents would've wanted you to live so you could finish the job they needed to do," I murmur into her hair, stroking her back, my fingers running along her spine. "And to answer your question, yes I like you. Despite the battles we faced, I never would've gone with you when we first meant if I didn't feel like I could trust you. And I did, I trust you. And I learned more about you, and when that guy was hitting on you, I felt the need to protect you. When we were breaking out of Cyberteck, and we had to jump. Knowing you were safe brought relief. So yeah, I guess I like you. Your my crush, whatever the kids call it these days," I admit, my blue eyes finding hers. She smiles at me, the tears making her face shine.
"If it makes you feel better, I like you too," Kristina smiles at me, a smile that could make you trust her immediately. "And maybe after all of this, I can take you somewhere. Your first date since the 1940s," Kristina laughs, still smiling at me.
"Yeah, we should. But for now, let's get those mutants back and break out of here," I reply, helping her up as we head deeper into the forest.
We walk for what seems like forever, the path twisting and winding, and the sun still shining despite the hours I felt we've spent in here. Suddenly, I hear a twig crack. I turn my head around and catch a glimpse of gold. My assassin instincts break in, and I'm sprinting after the gold, never losing it. Finally, I stop when I become surrounded by faces, Kristina right behind me.
"What do you want?" a small voice demands. I whip around to come face to face with the gold I saw earlier. A girl, body, covered in shiny gold, twinkling with every reflection.
"We're here to save you, we're here to get you away from HYDRA," Kristina replies, her voice soothing and caring like a mother. The child's body slowly starts melting away the gold, like it was a disguise she put on in the first place. A little girl with auburn curls and golden eyes stares at me, freckles dotting her nose. The gold was a shield, a defensive measure to protect herself. The other mutants stare at us, looking like they don't know whether to trust us or not.
"You can trust us," I put my hands up in surrender, not entirely sure what to do.
"We can trust them guys, believe me," another voice speaks. I look to my right to see a young girl, probably a few years younger then Kristina, staring straight at me. Her skin is dark, and her hair is as black as ravens. She's wearing a midnight purple jump-suit, something an agent might wear. "My power is I can see the truth in others, I can touch you and reveal the truth in yourself, I can listen and hear your true voice," she voices, her sound carrying through the forest like running water. I almost wanted to fall asleep listening to her speak, it was soothing.
"Let's go before HYDRA realizes we're here," Kristina urges.
"My name is Sophia, I'm kind of the leader of this thing," the dark-skinned girl walks closer to us, holding out her hand. I shake it, and she winks at me, throwing me off. She shakes Kristina's hand and smiles.
"Ready?" I ask as everyone looks around at each other.
"Always," Sophia answers, smiling like a little girl. Suddenly, shouts filled the forest. Alarm rose inside me, HYDRA's here. They've found us.
"Run!" Kristina screams.
So we run.
Intense.
I'm so intense.
I hope you guys are more connected with Kristina now, saying as I did just spill her whole back story. And I hope you guys feel Bucky and Kristina's relationship more
This is one of my more intense chapters, because Bucky and Kristina really connect and you see that Kristina isn't perfect.
Also just a reccomandation, buy the Captain America The Winter Solider soundtrack, its perfect, and I listen to it while I'm writing.
