Chapter 6: First Impressions

Taehyung suggested meeting up to go to L'atelier, a sort of interactive art exhibition you'd never been to. He had been excited to hear you were into modern art as well and was surprised when you said you'd never heard of this place before. You decided to go on a Thursday afternoon to avoid the crowds. He would make sure to make some time for you staying extra hours at the company, hopefully no meetings would be scheduled.

You weren't sure how to prepare yourself for the day, so you decided to watch some videos of the band, listen to some of the songs, to learn more about his work and his life. It was odd to have access to this information without feeling like a stalker.

This was probably a bad idea in the end. When you saw his solo performances you were caught off guard, the vibe he gave off was completely different. If his voice sent shivers up your spine only when he talked, his persona on stage made you lose any trace of coherence you could have. As your eyes widened at the way he looked at the camera and quirked an eyebrow, holding his hand up to his face sensually, you swallowed nervously.

Was he really so different or was he teasing you? You sighed at the idea of this being yet another failed attempt at maybe meeting someone. Deciding to text him and see what he would say about it, you picked up your phone and thought how to phrase it so it wouldn't sound creepy.

"I watched some of your performances!" that should do, pretty neutral.

"Oh! What did you think? Did you like them?" he replied shortly after smiling brightly at the fact that you had been interested in checking out his work.

"It's very...different, from what I expected" you bit your lip, he took a little longer to reply.

"Is that good or bad?" he furrowed his eyebrows unsure of what you meant. His heart sank at the thought of you disliking it. It is a big part of his life after all.

"I'm not sure how to explain it. You just sound different than what I saw" you figured this would get the point across.

Taehyung thought for a minute and then decided to send you the spoiler he had shared on Twitter of his mixtape. That sounded more like him than the work of the band, right? You listened to the audio and felt more at ease as this sounded a little more authentic and in accordance with what you had learned about him so far.

"I love that! It does sound more like you" you replied sort of relieved.

"I have more freedom to work on my own songs, mixtapes are more relaxed" he said feeling relieved as well that that seemed to do the trick. He suggested some of his other songs that he wrote for the band so you could listen to them. You happily obliged and for some reason this put him in such a good mood.

The guys had been worried about him, he was quiet these days and they wondered if he was keeping stuff to himself that would be best if he let out for his own sake. Around the time of FESTA they even took the opportunity to mention it, hoping he'd see how serious they were about it that it was shared on camera.

Fans questioned him on social media, thinking maybe he was depressed, but they weren't sure it was that kind of silence. Right now he looked a little lighter and more cheerful and whatever the reason was, they were happy for him. He was even a bit more playful off cameras, which is something that had gone from being like his usual self to being occasional.

As Thursday approached, you felt excited, but also anxious. You decided to try and pick an outfit to wear. Should you go for something you wore on daily basis or something a little more appropriate for a date, what would he expect? Was this a date?

You went through your jeans, you knew you'd feel awkward if you wore a skirt or a dress, so you opted for something casual. You were a nervous wreck as is about what you were going to talk about and you didn't want to feel uncomfortable in your skin. You picked out a pair of skinny black jeans that fit your body nicely.

Proceeding to look at the tops, you noticed the overwhelming number of t-shirts. That wouldn't do, it would seem too careless. You dug through the back of your closet trying to find some of the pieces you had worn only a couple times. You pulled out a gingham off-shoulder cotton top that buttoned up at the front. This should be cute and sober enough.

Nodding as you held it up to your body, you looked at yourself in the mirror inside of your closet's door. You took out a long cardigan, a scarf and short boots and you laid them all to a side to appreciate the whole look. This and a few accessories and it would all come together. You smiled proudly, hoping it was a good pick and he would like it. You bit your lip, if that's what he was hoping for.

Your phone rang on your dresser and you picked it up, it was your friend "Seulgi, hey" you said still thinking about your outfit.

"Hi, what are you up to? You sound distracted" she said with her usual cheerful voice. You questioned whether you should tell her about your not-date, she would surely be embarrassing about it.

She was more extroverted and insisted on hooking you up with someone and her mind would go there. It already had the day of the party. Someone had to know you were going out with someone new though and you most certainly weren't telling your mom about this. If she could she would have got you a husband already, that's how bad she was.

"I was picking what I was going to wear to hang out with someone I've been talking to" you said awkwardly and the tone of your voice gave it away.

"Oh my god, do you have a date?" she squealed and you rolled your eyes.

"No, it's a friend, it's not a date!" you denied.

"A guy friend?" you could hear that tone of voice she had when she talked about men.

"Yes. I'm stressed enough about it, can we please not talk about it that way?" you pleaded and she giggled.

"Fine, but I should tell you, I doubt he wants to be just friends" you growled at her, how would she know? Yes, you were not sure, but she seemed to be certain that this could only be a romantic interest. You didn't want to get your hopes up for nothing though, just in case.

"What's his name?" she asked curiously and remembering how she had acted the day when she saw you together you blurted out another name.

"Jaehyung"

"TAEHYUNG?" your friend screeched getting it wrong from your low voice, why did you pick such a similar name? You facepalmed feeling stupid.

"NOT. No. Jaehyung" you tried to save it.

"Come on, are you sure? I think you're lying" she scoffed in disbelief.

You feigned being offended, but she could see through you, she'd been your best friend since the first year of college and she knew all your evasive methods. When you remained silent she confirmed you were indeed trying to cover it up.

"Oh my god, it is!! It's Kim Taehyung" you pulled your phone a few inches away from your face as she screamed in your ear.

"It's not that big of a deal, it might not even go well" you tried to minimize it to keep her from becoming insufferable. You loved her, but she could be intense when it came to you and men, that was always the last thing you ever wanted to talk about.

"Oh, how did it go with Jungkook?" you quickly asked trying to change the topic to her. When her voice changed to a lower one, you felt bad knowing you'd made a mistake asking her that.

"We've texted from time to time, but he hasn't asked me out again ever since" Seulgi said a little disappointed. You knew she would bounce back easily or so you hoped, this was not the usual guy.

And neither was Taehyung, your thought process followed and you gulped.

What had you got yourself into?
