Part 26

Hyun-shik POV

I picked up one of the documents and looked it over. "This seems to be a private letter."

Mi-rae just glanced at the paper in my hand and said "Yeah, that was a letter that Donghae sent to Ye-ryung."

        "Who?"

"Oh!" she smiled "Ye-ryung was one of the accused and also the wife of the victim. Donghae was the other accused and also a doctor."

"Ahh" I nodded. "How do you know that?"

"Just read it! It say it all right there!"

"Yeah, but how did you know that with out reading it?"

        "What do you mean?"

"You only looked at the paper for a second! And it was facing away from you! So how could you possibly know the contents of this document?"

Sunjin/Mi-rae POV

SHIT! I should have been more careful! "Why do you think I knew?"

        "Huh?"

Good I caught him off guard. "Did you forget that my family runs the archives?"

        "No! But..."

        "So, isn't it obvious?"

        "What?"

"I've looked over the documents before, silly! That's why I choose this topic! Because I've already read all about it!"

"Well....... I guess that makes sense."

I chuckled a little. Thank God he bought that! "Why don't you take your time and look over the documents while I go and grab us a snack" I smiled.

"Is that really okay? I mean, aren't there rules about food and drinks? What if something spilled and we damaged the documents?"

"Don't worry! We'll put the documents in the chest before we pull out the snack." I stood up and walked over to the door. "I'll be right back! Don't go anywhere!"

Hyun-shik POV

"Okay!" I replied and then she took off.

Great! Now I'm all alone in the Vault of the Incheon Archives. I looked around the empty room and felt a shiver run down my spine. "This place isn't......haunted, is it?"

I tried to shake the feeling that I was being watched, but couldn't. I don't know what it was about this place, but it gave me the creeps.

I decided to just ignore it and concentrate on the documents in front of me. I looked at the paper I was holding before and read the contents of the letter. "Wow! She really did know what it was." I looked it over again and found out that it was instructions on how much poison to use in the food. "I can't believe that they would try and poison someone like that!"

I continued to peruse the documents until I came across the magistrate's log on the incident.

'A young woman arrived at the office in the middle of the night. She claimed it to be a matter of life and death, so my officers summoned me. The young woman proceeded to hand me a pile of documents. When asked to identify herself, she replied that her name was Sunjin and that she was a doctor from Inchon. When asked why she came to me instead of the magistrate in Inchon, her reply was that one of the people involved in this matter was a family member to the magistrate there and they were afraid that the matter would be ignored. I quickly scanned the documents and was shocked. The documents proved that a man by the name of Myung-dae was being poisoned by his wife Ye-ryung and doctor Donghae. I looked up at the woman before me and asked if she knew the contents of the documents. She stated that she did not look at them and that she only knew what she was told from the person she received them from. I asked her what she had been told about the documents and she replied that the documents were evidence of the wife's infidelity and attempts to poison him. Knowing that she was a doctor, I questioned why she decided to bring these documents to me rather than attempting to save her patient. Her response was that the patient was beyond her help. She stated that the poison was already affecting his entire body and that there was nothing she could have done to save him. She estimated that, if his condition doesn't change and they don't attempt to give more poison, he would survive for approximately two or three more days. After reviewing the situation and taking notes, I determined that this matter would be addressed first thing in the morning. The young woman refused our offer to stay the night and left for Inchon immediately.'

I couldn't help but stare at the magistrate's log in shock. "Sunjin?...... Myung-dae?........" Then the conversation from last night between Mi-rae and her brother came to mind. "Sunjin? Isn't that what Mi-rae's brother called her? And he mentioned a Myung-dae....... and there was something about a thousand years......"

Suddenly I heard a large thud, like something had fallen off one of the shelves. I turned to face the sound and could have sworn I saw a light. I quickly stood up and ran towards it. When I thought I had finally caught the light, it disappeared. Unfortunately, I was still running and didn't see the box in front of me. "Crap! That hurt!" I shouted after tripping over the chest. Then I picked it up and looked at it "This must have fallen from one of the shelves, but which one?" I looked at the shelves, but there was no way to identify where the chest belonged. "What should I do with this thing?"

"Open it" a voice whispered from behind me.

I quickly turned around, but no one was there. I shook my head "I must be hearing things."

"Open the chest" the voice whispered again. I looked in the direction it came from this time and fell flat on my butt. There was a ghostly figure right in front of me.

How did I know it was a ghost?

Well, for one it was floating in midair, I could see through it, and it was glowing. I guess that explains the light I saw earlier.

        "Wh...what's in....side?" I stuttered. Yes, I was afraid! I mean, It's a ghost! Who wouldn't be afraid of a ghost?

The ghost smiled at me "The truth."

"The truth? What truth? What are you talking about?"

The ghost floated towards me and I became more nervous. It paused and placed a hand on the chest in my hands. I looked up at it and my jaw dropped. It looked just like me. "Wh.....who....are.....y.....you?"

The ghost smiled again. "My name is Cho Myung-dae" he replied and then he started to glow brighter. Suddenly there was a strange feeling in my chest. It was like something was warming me from inside, but it didn't hurt. When the feeling subsided, the ghost was gone.

"Cho Myung-dae" I repeated his name as I looked at the chest in my hands. "What truth did you want me to see?"
