Part 16
Sunjin POV
I ran as fast as I could to the regional magistrate's office being as careful as I could to not get caught. That would just make this trip worthless. I arrived just outside of town and found a safe spot to transform. Then I continued running to the magistrate's office.
When I arrived at the office a couple of guards approached me. "Can we help you?" one asked.
"I need to see the magistrate immediately" I said as I tried to catch my breath.
"The magistrate is currently unavailable. If you really want to see him, you can come back in the morning."
"I need to see him right now!" I yelled. "It is a matter of life and death! I need to deliver these documents to him urgently!"
"You can give those to us...."
"NO! I'm not giving them to anyone besides the magistrate!"
The guards looked at each other and shrugged. "Come with me" one of the guards said as he lead me inside. The other guard ran off somewhere else. "You can wait in here until he arrives" he gestured to a seat.
About a half hour later, the guards returned with a grumpy old man. "What was so important that you had to disturb my sleep?" he asked rather annoyed at the fact that he had to work in the middle of the night.
I looked him over and could tell by his manners that he was really the magistrate and not someone posing as him. I bowed to him and said "I'm sorry for disturbing you at this hour, but it was urgent that you receive these" I held out the documents for him.
"You woke me because of this?" he was getting understandably upset. He turned to the guards and said "This could have waited till the morning."
"She claimed that it was a matter of life and death!" they defended themselves.
"Is that true?" he asked me. "Did you lie to these men?"
"Yes, I did say that" I admitted "But I wan't lying."
"Oh, really?"
"If you look at the documents in your hand, you will see that I'm not."
He strolled over to his desk and took a seat. "What is your name?"
"My name is Sunjin. I'm a doctor from Inchon."
"From Inchon??? Why did you come all the to Hanseong when you could have brought these documents to the magistrate there?"
"The magistrate in Inchon is the brother of the man in those documents. If I had brought it to him, he would have taken his brother's side and overlooked the matter."
He looked through the documents briefly and then asked "Were you the one who compiled these documents?"
"No" I replied honestly. "Cho Myung-dae did."
"I see" he nodded as he took some notes. "and do you know the nature and content of these documents?"
"I only know what he has told me."
"You haven't looked at them?"
"No" I stated firmly. "He gave me the documents and asked that I bring them to you as soon as possible. I didn't want to waste any time so I left immediately and came here."
He wrote down a few more things. "What did he tell you about the documents?"
"He said that they were proof that his wife was attempting to poison him with the aid of her lover and that the lover was actually the father of her child."
He looked at the documents again. "As a doctor, why didn't you try and save the patient rather than bring these here?"
I fought back my tears, so as not to show any weakness. "There was nothing I could have done. The poison was already affecting his entire system. He..." I choked.
"He.... What?"
"He was beyond my help. At most he will have two, maybe three more days before the poison will kill him. That is, if they don't attempt to give him more poison."
The magistrate nodded his head and said "Okay, thank you for your help. Officer Park will show you where you can stay. We will head out for Inchon first thing in the morning."
I stood up and bowed. "Thank you, but I will take my leave now. I have to return as soon as possible so that they do not suspect anything."
"It takes two to three days on horse back to get to Inchon from Hanseong. You would do better to rest."
"I will be fine" I said and then bowed once more. "Thank you."
I left the magistrate's office and was escorted to the gate by Officer Park. "Are you sure you wouldn't want to stay? It is very dangerous to travel by yourself you know."
"Thank you for your concern, but I will be fine."
"What if you were to run into a fox? I really don't like the thought of letting you go off alone like this."
I smiled at his sincerity, but shook my head as I said "I traveled here by myself, so I will be fine going back. Thank you." I bowed to the officer and then started running back to Inchon. When I was sure that I wasn't being followed and that there was no one around, I transformed back into a fox and ran all the way back home.
I managed to sneak back into the house before the sun rose. I walked over to my office and saw my brother still using his fox magic to make it look like I was working. He looked over at me and then quickly wrote something down before saying rather smugly "How's everything going?" Then he held up the paper and I read You are so DEAD!!!!
I chuckled silently. Then I regained my composure, smiled and said "Looks like I should have enough for now."
He stood up, walked over to me and gave me a hug. Then he whispered in my ear "You owe me one. Welcome home."
I nodded. "I'm going to go wash up and then I'll prepare breakfast" I said as I blew the lanterns out.
"Good, cause you stink like medicine!" my brother playfully teased and I chased him out of the office laughing.
"Wait till I get you!"
