Part 11

Young-jae POV

"My daughter said the same thing?"

        I smiled "Yes, she did."

"Why would she mention fate to you?" I could see the confusion on her face.

"It seems our worst fears are no longer unfounded."

(Flashback 15 years ago)

Still Young-jae POV

(The day of the incident)

"Yeobo! We have to hurry if we want to make it to the temple before sundown!" my wife called out to me. She walked into our room and said "What's the matter?"

"I can't find my favorite hat" I replied as I looked through my closet.

My wife giggled "You left it in your study last night."

"Oh, right!" I ran to my study and found it sitting on my desk. I picked it up and placed it on my head. I was about to tie it when my wife came over and took the ribbons from my hands and tied it for me. "What would I do without you?" I asked and then gave her a peck on the lips.

"You'd be married to some other woman" she pouted. "And you'd probably love her more than you do me."

"Are you kidding? Where am I going to find a woman better than you?" I kissed her again.

"Mother! Father! Let's go!" We both laughed as we heard Myung-dae calling for us. He was really excited about this trip to the temple. We walked outside and were greeted by an overly excited five year old. "Are you ready?" he asked with a big smile plastered on his face.

"Yes, my darling boy" his mother bent over and tidied his appearance. Then she stood back up and took him by the hand. He reached out with his other hand and tightly grasped my hand as well.

We were about to leave, when one of the Lee's servants came running through the gate. "Dr. Cho!" He ran up to me and grabbed my free hand. "Thank goodness you are still here!"

        "What's going on?" I asked.

        "It's Mrs. Lee! The baby!"

I looked at my wife and she said "Just go. They need you. I'll take Myung-dae to the temple and we will see you there later." Then she gave me a peck on the lips as one of our servants brought me my bag.

"I'll be right be hind you!" I called out to them as I walked through the gates.

Myung-dae POV

I waved as I watched my father run through the gates following after the Lee's servant. Then I sighed. It was always like this. Father's patient's were always more important than us.

My mother crouched down to me and said "Let's go to the temple."

        "I don't want to" I pouted.

"Myung-dae" she said sternly. "You know your father loves you, right?"

"He loves his patient's more" I retorted.

Yeah I was a smart and cocky little brat.

"He said that he will follow right after us." My mother smiled "Let's go and wait for him at the temple."

She held out her hand and I took it. "Okay!"

I loved going on trips with my mother. She always made it an adventure. We came to the fork in the road and my mother asked "Shall we go exploring through the woods?"

Even though the woods were known to have foxes, it was a rare thing to be attacked by them. So I smiled and nodded and we took off into the woods.

We had been walking for a while when a couple of men popped out from behind the bushes. I thought they were just thieves and yelled at them "Get out of our way! We have no money!"

They started chuckling and my mother pulled me closer to her. "Looks like we found ourselves a nice treat" one of the men said as he approached us.

Then I felt something sharp like a blade sweep across my back. I screamed in pain and blacked out.

Sunjin POV

I was so happy. It was my birthday and my father was going to take me to town for the first time. I had finally learned how to transform properly and he was going to take me to town to buy me a present.

We had been running though the woods, when we heard screams just up ahead of us. We quickly rushed to see what was happening and found two other foxes attacking a woman and a young boy.

We had never had any problems with humans before and I often saw my father helping them out, so I went over to see if the young boy was okay.

When the other foxes saw me looking at the boy, they turned and hit me hard. My father rushed over and attacked them. The other foxes yelled at my father "Keep your pup away from our treat!"

"Why did you attack them? They weren't doing us any harm?" My father argued back.

The other foxes looked at one another and then began attacking my father.

I looked at the young boy lying unconscious and then I saw the woman trying to reach out to him. I cautiously walked closer and heard her struggling to say "M...my... ae...ae...gi."

My father was still busy fighting with the other foxes, so I walked over to the boy and dragged him over to his mother. Then I sat in front of her, smiled  and said "Here you go."

The woman looked at me and then to her child. She reached out, touched his face and began to cry. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. I'm sorry you have to die like this because of your mother."

I looked at the boy and was curious as to what she meant. "Can't you just heal him? My mother always heals me when I am hurt."

The woman looked up at me in surprise. "I can't. I..." she coughed "I'm not like you."

I walked over to the boy and nudged him. "Please, don't eat my aegi" the woman pleaded.

"He is not dead" I replied. "He can still be healed" I smiled.

"He can?" his mother looked up at me. "Can you heal him?"

"I don't know" I said. "I've never seen my mother heal a human before. She said healing powers are only for family. She doesn't even use them on other foxes."

"Then take him" she cried. "Make him part of your family. Please just save him" she pleaded.

I thought for a moment and then I transformed. Then I leaned over and produced my fox bead. "What are you doing?" his mother asked.

I took the bead from my mouth and held it in my hand. "This is my fox bead, if i give it to him and he accepts it, we will be married and he will become part of my family. Then I will be able to heal him" I smiled.

"Married? You... You're going to marry my son?"

"Yes" I smiled and nodded. "You said to make him part of my family."

        "Okay" she nervously nodded.

I opened his mouth and placed my bead inside before closing it. Then I leaned over so that our foreheads were touching and closed my eyes. I felt my bead become one with his body and I smiled. I looked at his mother and said "He has accepted my bead. Now I can heal him." I sat up and placed my hands over his body. I called on the healing power of my bead and his wounds began closing. once he was healed, his mother smiled.

        "Thank you" she cried.

The boy opened his eyed and sat up. "Hello" I smiled at him.

"Hello" he nervously replied. I inched closer and placed my head on his lap. "What are you doing?" he nervously asked.

"I'm doing what all married couple do" I replied. "You are my husband now." Although I could tell he was still nervous, he began stroking my head.

Suddenly, my father was now standing before us. He was still fighting with the other foxes. "Stay away from them!" he yelled at them.

"They belong to us!" the foxes screamed back at him.

Then one of the foxes lunged at my father, but he was able to dodge his attack and land a fatal blow on him. "Now for you" my father threatened the other one.

The other fox slowly backed up and ran away. "Fine! You can have them!"

My father turned to face us and was surprised to see the young boy stroking my head. "What...happened?"

"Dad!" I sat upright and smiled. "This is my husband!"

My father collapsed to the ground. "Dad!" I ran over to him. "What's wrong!" There was so much blood. I tried to heal him, but it wouldn't work. I began crying. "Dad!"

Unexpectedly, my husband came over and embraced me from behind. "It's okay to cry" he said as he choked back his own tears. I looked over and saw that his mother was no longer moving as well.

We sat there in each other's arms until we both passed out.

Young-jae POV

I'm glad I was able to deliver the baby quickly. Now I can go to the temple with them. I should still be able to catch up with them if I take a horse. I ran back hom to drop off my stuff and then quickly left once more.

When I came to the fork in the road, I knew my wife would take the forest path because she loved taking Myung-dae on little adventures. As I was traveling the path, I started to have a bad feeling. It felt as though someone was tying my insides into knots. Then I saw what I feared the most.

"Yeobo!" I screamed as I hopped of the horse and ran over to her. I broke down into tears as I held her lifeless form.

"Yeobo!" I heard a woman scream. I looked up and saw a fox hunched over one of the dead foxes.

I grabbed a rock and was about to throw it at her, when she looked at me. I wish I knew what she was thinking.

Mi-seon POV

I could smell the blood in the air. I quickly ran through the woods until I found "Yeobo!"

When I finally looked up to take in what had happened, I saw a man with a rock in his hands. Did he do this? I looked at my husband again and saw that this was the work of another fox. I looked back at the man and saw that he was trembling. No, he couldn't have done this.

I did the only thing I could think of to try and ease his mind; transform.

Young-jae POV

I was so nervous because she was just staring at me. Did she do this? Should I attack her? Then suddenly, she began to transform.

"Hello, my name is Mi-seon" she said politely.

        "I...I'm Yo...Young....jae" I stuttered back.

"There is no need to be nervous."

"Says the fox that killed my wife!"

"I did not kill your wife" she stated plainly. "Judging from the looks of things" she looked around a bit more. This was the work of a pair of foxes."

"Probably the two dead ones over there" I pointed to the foxes near her.

"Not this one" she lifted the fox closest to her. "This was my husband. He would never have attacked your wife. Judging from his position, he was protecting her from the one behind me."

        "Why would he do that."

"Probably because of them" she pointed to the space between us and my eyes widened.

"Myung-dae!" I rushed over to him and saw that he was holding a little girl. "Who is this girl?"

"That is my daughter" the fox said as she silently approached.

        I stumbled backwards "Y...your daughter?"

"Yes" she gently separated the two children and held her daughter in her arms. She carefully examined her before saying "It looks like she is okay." Then she did the same with Myung-dae. "It looks like your son was unharmed as well, but I sense something unusual about him."

        "Unusual? What do you mean?"

Mi-seon POV

"I sense fox magic in this boy."

"Fox.... Magic? What does that mean?"

"I'm not sure" I replied as I looked him over. Then I noticed the tears in his clothing. "It looks like your son may have been attacked after all."

Young-jae rushed to my side, grabbed his son and began to examine him. "Where?"

"If you look closely at his clothing, you will see the claw marks. It seems he has already been healed though."

"How?" he looked to me for answers.

"That is what I'm uncertain about. I just hope my assumption is wrong."

        "Why?"

"Because if I'm right, you may not like the answer."

        "Tell me anyways."

"Based on looks of things, the only one who could have possibly healed your son" I took a deep breath "is my daughter."

He looked at my daughter with curiosity. "Why would she do that? You foxes attack humans all the time! Why would one heal my son?"

"Not all foxes attack humans" I stressed and I think he got a little nervous. "My family has never had a problem with humans and we have never attacked them either." I sighed as I thought about the situation we were in. "I'm more worried about what this means" I pointed to our children.

Young-jae POV

"Why? What does this mean?" Now she has me nervous.

"If I'm right, and I hope I'm not, I think my daughter may have..."

"May have, what?" I screamed at her. "Stop beating around the bush and spit it out! What did she do to my son?"

        "Married him."

        "Ma........... Married?" O_O

"Yes" she replied simply. "A fox is only able to heal those who are a part of their immediate family."

"But.....How could she possibly have married my son all the way out here?"

"Like I said... I'm not sure if that is what happened. It is only my assumption."

"Then I hope you are wrong" I lifted my son up. "I hope we never cross paths again. Otherwise I may not be as agreeable." I rushed back to town and went straight to the magistrate. "Help!" I called out.

"What is it, Dr. Cho?" one of the guards approached me.

        "Foxes! They've killed my wife!"

The magistrate rushed to the courtyard "Foxes? Where?"

        "The woods!" I replied.

        "Show me!"

I led them to the place where I found my wife and saw that the fox was gone with both her daughter and the dead fox she called her husband. All that remained was my wife, the other fox and the blood stained ground.
