Chapter Two

The next day

"Miles, if you don't get your butt up right now, I'll personally get one of the Eldens to wake you up." God, it's not even six in the morning and I've got a sentient sword as my yappy alarm clock. I laid in bed with my eyes still closed, lazily swatting in the general direction where I heard her voice.

"Just five more minutes? I already did all my chores yesterday." I said groggily, rubbing my eyes open to see Clare hovering by the bedroom door. We looked at each other briefly before I finally gave up and threw my legs over the side. "Fine, you win, let me throw some clothes on."

"I'll be outside waiting, we got some more training to do," she said enthusiastically, her leather straps grabbing the knob to open the door, "Today's a good one, we're going to learn how to do interstellar travel!"

My ears perked up with surprise and confusion. Wait, didn't I already learn how to do that? I've been practicing even? Clare already had an answer apparently.

She flew out into the hallway, shutting the door so I can get dressed. Well, I suppose I did do an epic fail that one time. Tossing on a quick T-Shirt, my belt, jeans and my new sneakers. After digging around for a few moments, I find my worn out helmet, and finally walked out the front door, fitting the helmet on. It was a little dark out, and the few was still at its peak. Walking down the steps, I turn my belt on, the armor shifting to cover my tails together.

"Uh, I hope that's space worthy." Clare gave me a concerning look, floating around me to get a better view of my attire. She finally stopped and looked me in the eyes. "Oh hell no. No, is your brain on? That won't do. We'll just train for something else today then. Did you mention that you needed to work out? How about we test your strength and see where we're at. You already have some decent experience with traveling anyways." I simply shrugged, taking the battered helmet off.

"Fine by me coach, what first? Lift Carl's tractor? That'll be easy." I smirked, crossing my arms. I probably shouldn't have said anything though, Clare narrowed her eye while her crystal turned yellow.

"Let's take a quick trip to a mountain range, then we'll talk about easy." A mountain range? What could Clare have possibly come up with this time? Clare turned into her necklace, and placed herself around my neck. I voiced my most likely unpopular opinion.

"Clare, the only mountain range I know of is like a hundred miles out. Can't we do something else? Maybe find out if I have other powers from The Gift?"

"Nope, we're going to go see how much you can lift. I'd rather us do this now while it's dark out before the sun rises, We don't want people to see. Plus, you're lazy if you don't want to use your super speed for a measly hundred miles."
Clare kept barraging me with roasts. God okay I'll do it.

"Whatever, you win." I put my helmet back on. Since I woke up not even ten minutes ago, I gave up and got into my running stance. I'm going to go a little past Sonic's average speed and take it easy until I'm fully awake.

I started running towards our training site for a bit before my mind began flooding about my conversation with Carl. Where IS my family? Where did my dad go? WHO was my dad, and my mom? Then older questions popped back into my head. Who was the original Galaxy Guardian here? Did Clare ever have an original? I wouldn't think so since I found her in that mausoleum-like chamber under New Vancouver. Maybe that's where she went when she was first forged? I had enough and figured I would ask again to be sure.

"Clare, you don't have any clue who the original Galactic Guardian was here?" I looked down at my neck briefly while focusing ahead of me.

"I'm sorry, but I don't remember anything past you waking me up. It feels... Foggy? I don't know how to describe it." I could feel Clare's sadness and confusion. We finally arrived at the foot of the mountain as Clare lifted herself off of me, transforming into her blade form again. "I'm sorry Miles. Trust me, if I knew anything about my past, I'd've told you," she looked down, then back up at me, "Do you think me dying and transforming into a Universal Sword had an effect on my memory?" Clare raised a good question. Like I have any idea unfortunately.

"Unlikely, you didn't recall anything whenever you were a Galaxy Sword either." I replied, looking around for anything heavy looking. That's when I spotted a large boulder about the size of a city bus, and started walking towards it. "It's okay Clare, we'll figure out something. Here, do you think this is big enough for me?" I smiled at her, hopefully lifting her spirits. She came zooming to inspect the rock, squinting at it.

"Yeah, go ahead and try lifting it first, I'm sure this is an easy one for you." Clare floated back, giving me some room. Eh, I'm kinda skeptical about this one. I squatted down, digging my hands into the boulder before putting in a little effort.

"Hrrrgh.." With slightly relative ease, I lift the large boulder from the ground, and raise it above my head. Clare watched with awe as the loose dust and pebbles fell around us both.
Suddenly Clare looked behind me, her eye widening. What could it possibly be now? I slowly turn around, the large boulder swinging over us. My heart stopped as Clare immediately placed herself by my side. "Oh shi-"

"Ah, it appears my young Guardian and his Blade are keeping up with their training, good job you two!" It was Madam Universe. There was no doubt in my mind, especially hearing her fancy accent. She had her hair up in a ponytail. In a hurry, I threw the rock in a random direction, all three of us watching as the two ton chunk of mountain flew off a few hundred feet. I kneeled down without hesitation as the ground shook beneath us from the boulder landing finally. "Uh, okay then," She scratched her head, turning back to us, "Why hello you two, it has been quite awhile since we've last had a proper meeting." Yeah, it's not like it's been a few months. "Yes, it has been a few months indeed." She smiled, nodding towards me. I keep forgetting how she too can read my thoughts. Damn... I'm surrounded by mind readers.

"Yeah, Clare woke me up early so we can train in the dark. Kinda helps keep me under cover." I rose up, standing up straight. She's here because something important is going on, I can feel it. Is it another emergency? Did the Eldens seek another audience with me? With her, who knows. Clare spoke up.

"Yes Mistress, I have been training him to hone in his abilities, but he complains a lot and bickers about my methods." Her crystal turned yellow. I looked at her with dread and looked back at the Universe, who seemed to be... Giggling? Clare giggled back, I guess she was only fooling with me. God damnit.

"Yes, I'm sure. Though, I see your power has only grown during my temporary absence in your training, quite extraordinary." She rubbed her chin, walking around me. "Goodness me, your attire is... Worn, to say the least." There it is, another comment about my tail and helmet. "Regardless, I have some fantastic news for you two, and an explanation as to why I've been gone for so long." Her smile brightened as she crossed her arms.

"I've been going around preparing for something big. Tomorrow, for the first time in millions of years, every Galactic Guardian will congregate in the Grand Universal Colosseum. There, we shall celebrate the fall of Arthas, and officially inaugurate you as the next Universal Guardian." Clare widened her eye and floated back in surprise. What is she talking about? Am I not already the Guardian? And what is this colosseum that she's talking about, a colosseum capable of holding all those Guardians...? Clare seemed a little exhilarated about it.

"A hearing hasn't happened since Arthas turned. I'm definitely sure they're going to be happy to hear that he's gone." Clare made a good point. The Universe simply nodded in response as I looked around, hoping nobody was watching. I mean, we ARE out in the open after all. I looked back to the mistress only to see her pointing at me. Uh..?

"You most certainly need to fix that outfit of yours Guardian. We don't want trillions of people to see how unkept you are, do we? If you'd like, I know a wonderful tailor and armorer who could make what you're looking for in a suit?" She said, rubbing her chin some more. I appreciate the offer, but I kinda like the robustness of my fit.

"I'm okay, I can fix it up brand new for you, I can just ask Nara to stitch my robe up." I reassured her hopefully. She gave me a dissatisfied look before waving her finger at me. Suddenly my full hero outfit appeared on me out of nowhere, the true extent of its wear and tear very apparent to her.

"Miles, dearest, I can see a hole in your jumpsuit. If you dared go to space in that, you'll freeze instantly. I'm glad you didn't practice your space travel abilities today." She waved her finger again, completely fixing my jumpsuit and gear. The sun peaked over the horizon, rising slowly as all three of us looked, the Universe smirking. I guess she still marvels in her own creations. I looked down on my HUD where the time was.

"Well, It's way past six in the morning," I gripped Clare and put her in my scabbard, which spawned with the suit thankfully, "I'll prep for the meeting, who all is going?" The Universe looked back to me, still slightly focused on the still rising star.

"Well, if every Galactic Guardian being there doesn't sound important enough, all five of the Eldens will be too. Like I said, Guardian, it's the first one in quite a while, so it'll be special. Just promise me you won't be late to your own inauguration, it'll make you both look pretty bad." She smiled at us, looking to the side before looking back. "I must go, there are still some preparations I must make. Oh, and one more thing, work on your throw, you put it all in your arms, when you should use your back for that extra umph." She winked, turning around. I suddenly remembered my questions.

"Wait, before you go," I reached my arm out as she turned back to me with a puzzled look, "Clare and I have been talking, and neither of us can figure it out." She crossed her arms, eagerly waiting for me to ask my question. I knew she was in a hurry so I needed to make it quick. "Was there a Guardian of this Galaxy before me? Clare can't remember if there was or not." She looked perplexed, looking down at Clare for a moment before quickly glancing back at me.

"That I can't recall. If there was, then I would've remembered. Though I suppose you could always go peek around the library for answers." Wait, a library? What's she talking about? She gave me another confused look. "The Omniscriptorium, the library with the accumulated knowledge of the Universe?" That's the first time I've ever heard of it. The Universe looked back. "Dearest, I really must go, I still have much to do. I suggest going when you have free time. Remember, don't be late, look sharp." She pointed at me before fading away. Wow, no pressure I guess. I also noticed how briefly she makes an appearance too. I made a mental note before looking at the time again.

"Alright, let's head back, Carl should be awake by now." Clare stated. Clare made it a point to be as helpful as possible with Carl. It's free rent with labor versus not having a roof over my head at all.

I ran back to the house covered in sweat after another quick exercise, skidding to a stop by the porch stairs. Clare followed me through the front door and zoomed to my room. I walked to the dimly lit kitchen before being greeted by a groggy Carl.

"Oh, heya Miles, where'd ya run off to?" He was in the middle of making coffee, still in his classic tank top. He slept in that no doubt. We were both as quiet as possible, trying not to wake the kids. He looked down and back up, most likely looking at the brand new looking suit.

"Wassup Carl," I rubbed his shoulders, greeting him as I got the sugar and his favorite creamer out, "Me and Clare went to the mountains and did a few training exercises. Actually, we saw the Universe too." I placed the coffee stuff next to the ongoing maker. Carl, still sleepy, had a surprised look on his face.

"Oh nice, how is she? Ye' haven't seen her in a while I don't think." He patted me on the back, thanking me. Nara came around the corner in her night gown, rubbing her eyes. She simply squeezed my arm a few times to say hello.

"I haven't no, but she said there was going to be a big meeting tomorrow. Apparently all the Guardians are coming together, I'm kinda nervous." Nara gave a light chuckle.

"Sweetie, you're nineteen, you're almost an adult. Having stage fright will be the least of your concerns when you grow older." Carl nodded, mixing in the sugar for the both of them.

"Yeah, like taxes, credit, or maybe having children if you ever go that route." He slid a mug to his wife, before grabbing his, leaning against the counter. "My wife could be talking about other things too of course, like that Arthas fellar or something of the sorts." I mean, he made good points about adulting, but for villains, I'm not too sure there's any threat worth my while out there. Nothing those Galaxy Guardians can't handle I don't think.

I walked back to my room, quietly shutting the door so I didn't wake the kids. I noticed Clare looking out the window as I took off my robe and helmet. She broke the silence.

"You know, that's the first time I've ever heard of that library too, 'The Omniscriptorium,' and yet that sounds so familiar to me. I don't think I had a past, and yet I feel like I did." Her crystal turned blue for sadness. "I suggest we make a trip to that library here soon, maybe after the ceremony." I grunted in response as I tried taking off my jumpsuit. Clare turned around and widened her eye. "Wow, that scarred pretty bad didn't it?" I looked down at the cut Forstmourne gave me on my side. My fur parted away from it, making it very noticeable if I ever go topless.

"Yeah it did, it's whatever though." I went ahead and put another shirt on to cover it up. "Also, don't worry about it, we'll find out about your history eventually. First, we gotta make sure we're prepped for that ceremony, after that, I promise we'll go take a look." I booped her crystal before sitting down, tinkering a little more with my helmet and belt.  Clare rolled her eye and laughed a little, staring out the window again to meditate. If I wanted to look nice, I better add some cool details to these... It's okay, I have until tomorrow. I should get this done with relative ease.
