Tough choices

"You chose the wrong side." -Tony Stark, Captain America: Civil War

"At least I don't have to ride a horse, I can just sit here and do nothing." Gillian chuckled lightly, looking at Elena who was riding next to the prisoner cart he was in. His hands were clasped around the metal that kept him inside and separated from everyone outside.

The Dark One seemed to be the one who had started the fire a few days ago. Probably to trigger everyone, make everyone confused and disoriented so that they were all distracted. What he had aimed to accomplish nobody knew, except for Abigail. Probably also to kill Gillian and to make sure Elena would finally break.

It was Robb who had stopped her from firing the arrow. He had ran through the whole burning castle after he found out she was inside only to stop her from killing her friend. Yes Gillian had been raised from the dead and yes he may have killed people in his weak state but that didn't mean he had to die. Robb knew that if Gillian would die Elena would crumble even though he was with her, Robb knew that she would give up and give in to the darkness.

This was the first time after Damon had given permission for the two to marry that he regretted it. Damon knew that Robb would never mean to hurt her, physically or mentally, even if it meant he'd have to make a terrible mistake. Someone had to make these hard choices. Damon knew though that he couldn't possibly kill Gillian himself now, the relationship between him and his sister would crumble and he'd probably be sentenced to death by Robb for disobeying his command.

"Why won't you tell me what happened?" Gillian asked after some time and looked at Elena. Her face was hidden from his sight by a large black hood.

"I don't want you to worry." Elena answered.

"A few days ago you aimed an arrow at me and almost let go, of course I'm worried." Gillian frowned and crawled closer to her. Elena only sighed and petted her horse.

Elena remembered it like it happened just a few seconds ago. If it hadn't been for Robb storming in, she would've let that arrow fly. Damon had been encouraging her to do it, to finally let go and to accept the fact that her friend was dead. When Robb arrived though, he immediately laid his hand on her arm and pushed it down so the arrow wasn't aimed at Gillian anymore. He then took her out of the castle without saying anything whatsoever.

When they arrived outside, Elena and Robb before Damon and Gillian, they saw the chaos outside. Many people were coughing due to the smoke filling the air. Steven looked up at them and saw the blood covering Gillian and immediately knew what had happened. He also knew that he couldn't finish what Elena had started, in a way Steven knew that that's what Ethan wanted him to do.

"Where's Abigail?" Damon had asked after a few seconds, sprinting towards Steven.

"I don't know." Steven looked up at Damon with an apolagic glance.

It was then that Abigail ran towards the little group positioned in the courtyard with a few splashes of blood covering her arms and clothes. She looked at them with sorrow in her eyes, her whole body was shaking and her lips were trembling.

"Father, I'm so sorry." She sobbed while looking at Damon.

"What are you talking about?" Damon's eyes widened in worry. He ran towards his daughter to try and take a better look at her but she diverted her face away from him. "Abigail, what's going on?"

"Where's Ella?" Steven asked slowly and clearly, standing up from the ground and looking at Abigail cautiously. "Abigail, where's Ella?" Steven repeated, his hand reaching for his sword.

Elena looked between the two, not understanding what it was about. Nobody had told her about the prophecy yet, she didn't know how vulnerable it left Ella. So instead she looked up at Robb, trying to see if he had any idea what was going on. He only stood there though, his eyes trained on Abigail.

She looked behind her. Ella slowly appeared from behind one of the buildings, looking if there was any danger in sight. When there was none she quickly sprinted towards Steven while sobbing and clasped her arms around his body tightly, hiding her face in his chest while she was shivering in fear. Everyone let out a relieved sigh at the sight of her.

"He almost made me do it." Abigail sobbed while looking at Damon. "Father, I'm so scared that he will succeed one day. I don't want to, but I can't hold it back."

"It's okay." Damon whispered while looking at his daughter. He laid his hand on her cheek, looking into her eyes. "You fought against it."

Now Abigail was somewhere at the front of the army, riding next to her father. Elena was glad that they weren't too late. She looked at Gillian who was sitting in his tiny little prisoncart.

"Are you okay though?" Gillian asked when their eyes met. "We could leave you know. Run into the woods, escape life. Feel sorry about our lives." Gillian chuckled.

"Well, life is a cruel thing. People die. Things change. But the world doesn't pause for anyone, so I'm not going to feel sorry for myself and think the sun should never shine again just because a few things I don't like has happened."

Gillian looked at her, surprised by her wise words. He nodded while deep in thought, looking at the horizon. He knew he was never going to escape from the things he'd done.

"Are the prisons in Moat Cailin just as cold as in Winterfell?" Gillian asked her.

"I don't know. I just think the air is a bit moister, considering the castle lies in a swamp and all." Elena answered. Gillian hummed in response.

"How long will we stay there, you think?" Gillian asked.

"Robb said we just had to make everyone ready for the war. Next stop is probably Harrenhal to see if our men still have it. After that it's King's Landing." Elena summed up. "I just hope our men still have Harrenhal and Moat Cailin. Maybe this war will finally be over soon. Robb is still contemplating if it'd be wise to first take Casterly Rock to break the Lannister's spirits. If you ask me though, I'd rather just go into the Red Keep with all the guardians and kill them without giving them the chance to process what's happening."

"That'd be too easy." Gillian smiled softly.

"I know, that's why it's so appealing."

"Don't get your hopes up, Robb wouldn't let you do it."

"I know." Elena sighed deeply and looked at Gillian, smiling.

"Engaged, huh?" Gillian looked at her while frowning. "Are you sure you can bear to spend the rest of your life with that arrogant little prick?"

"He just saved your life." Elena tried to act offended.

"He did, so?" Gillian shrugged and looked down at his hands. "That doesn't mean you suddenly have to marry him."

Elena fell silent, looking at the reins in her hands. Together with the memories his old feelings must've come back too. "Look, Gillian, I-"

"I get it." Gillian interrupted her. "He got to you first. Robb, the lord of Winterfell with his auburn curls and blue eyes. I'm probably a pile of shit compared to him."

"It's the other way around." Elena said and looked at Gillian. "He's a pile of shit. You, you deserve more than me. I can live with my pile of shit while you can marry one of the most beautiful and kindest maidens in the world."

"And where do I find this maiden?"

"I don't know. You can be damn sure though that I'll find her for you." Elena smiled at him.

"If she can cook, it's fine with me." Gillian leaned back lazily and crossed his arms before his chest. "And some nice pair of blue eyes would be marvellous."

Elena chuckled when Gillian continued to sum up more qualities in a girl that he'd like. "You're making this very hard for me, you know that, right?"

"That's what I'm trying to do." Gillian's smile disappeared. "I swear though Elena, if he even dares to hurt you in any way, I will kill him."

"Get in line." Elena chuckled.

Damon walked into his tent after the long journey. His legs were hurting because of it. Sometimes Damon had thought that maybe he should just fly around the army so that he didn't have to ride a horse.

Damon sighed as he poured himself a cup of wine, trying to numb his mind. The fact that his daughter almost got controlled by his murderous and treacherous brother was almost too much for him. Almost.

When Damon took a sip of the wine he suddenly felt a presence. Someone was there with him. Ethan couldn't get into his mind, no, Damon was too strong for that. But there was someone here in the tent.

Damon took another sip of the sweet wine and then placed the cup back on the table. He leaned against it and crossed his arms before his chest, looking at the shadow in the corner of the tent.

"So now you're down to killing innocent little girls." Damon narrowed his eyes at the shadow. "And I thought you couldn't get any lower."

Ethan chuckled and stepped out of the shadows, walking around Damon slowly with his hands behind his back. "Let's just say I'm taking the necessary precautions."

"Since when do you believe in prophecies?"

"Since they're about me." Ethan stood still and glared at Damon for a few seconds.

"The darkness." Damon mocked him and took the cup of wine back in his hands. "The so called darkest person in the world is afraid of innocent little young girls, how fascinating."

"I did not come here to hear your useless mockeries, Damon." Ethan snapped.

"Really? I thought you loved to hear my voice." Damon took another swig of his wind.

"I'm here to propose a deal."

"Aaah. So it didn't work out with Abigail and now you're trying with me? Here I was thinking I'd always be your first choice." Damon pouted. "I'm so disappointed."

Something within Ethan snapped. He lifted Damon up by his neck with his powers and threw him against the table. Ethan walked towards his body and then kicked him.

"You should not forget who the strongest is, dear little brother." Ethan growled as he knelt down before Damon. "If you weren't of so much use to me you'd already be eating insects on the bottom of the earth."

"Asshole." Damon managed to speak with his arms clasped around his stomach.

"Now that we're on the same page, let's talk about the deal." Ethan said. "It's easy. You kill Ella and I'll spare Abigail, Elena and Robb. Maybe even our dear old Steven if I'm feeling like it."

"You kill Ella, bastard." Damon growled.

"That's not the way it works."

"Why not? Too scared to do your own dirty work?" Damon snapped and slowly tried to sit back up.

"Dear little brother, sometimes I forget how naïve and ignorant you truly are."
Ethan chuckled and poked his brother's cheek. "Here I am giving you the chance to save your loved ones and you refuse my offer."

"Such a shame." Ethan pouted and then stood up, heading towards the exit.

"Wait!" Damon held up his hand as he steadied himself on his feet. "I didn't say I refuse."

"Finally learning to use your brain?" Ethan frowned at him.

"No, not that. Learning to make tough choices to save the people I love." Damon glared at him.

"Good enough for me." Ethan said and turned back around, walking through the exit. "Kill her in Moat Cailin on the first night or else..." Ethan glanced back at Damon. "I have something fun in mind."

Author's note

Hellooo there my little guardians,

Just wanted to say an huge thank you to all of you for all your votes last chapter ^^. You guys are amazing.

Soooo, nobody died J Not going to promise that no one will, though.

Again, thank all of you and see you next chapter!

( If you can see the picture of this chapter, I though that this just pretty much summed up the difference between Ethan and Damon xd. Above is our dear little Damon and under is our treacherous but amazing hot Ethan. I also changed the cast, Ian Somerhalder isn't Damon anymore, Sebestian Stan is. (The guy who plays Bucky in the Captain America saga, just so you know if you didn't know yet xd) Just thought he fit better :P)
