The unburnt

"Damon was right."

Elena had closed her eyes before the green light could cover her vision. She just let it embrace her, expecting her skin to melt off just at the touch of the wildfire. She wouldn't even feel the pain of it burning her skin before she'd die, she knew that wildfire killed almost instantly. Elena expected that if she'd open her eyes, she'd see either light or only darkness. To be honest she didn't fear death, she welcomed it. All those years spend fighting felt like an eternity. The only regret she had is that she didn't get to see Robb when Westeros was finally at peace.

When she opened her eyes again though she didn't see a light at the end of the tunnel, she didn't see only darkness, she was greeted with green fire instead. She saw the fire melt everyone's skin, saw Margaery's hair lit and burn almost instantly, her clothes set on fire and her skin melting like the High Sparrow's and almost everyone else's. Elena frowned, looking around at everyone as they were surrounded by flying debris and the green fire. Everyone burned except for her.

She looked down at her hands which were surrounded by the fire yet it didn't burn her in the slightest. It just licked her skin, waving through her fingers like water would. She clenched her hands into fists and pressed her eyes shut, daring not to look up again and see everyone burn to death. All that she had seen in her life, all the death and decay was nothing compared to the wildfire consuming everything around her. The screams of the victims filled her ears together with the sept falling apart.

The building. Elena's eyes spread wide open when she realized that the building was falling, and it was falling fast. Without thinking she spread her wings and flipped them, flying up in the air whilst dodging away from the debris that threatened to take her back down to the ground and bury her alive. When she looked up Elena could only see the ceiling and the huge statues falling down towards her.

"Damon?!" She screamed out, trying to reach his mind even though he was far away. She didn't see a way out, didn't see a path through which she could fly as the building was falling down on her. She continued to dodge every small piece of debris that fell down but soon the whole ceiling would collapse. There would be no avoiding that.

"Damon?!!" She yelled again when she saw the cracks forming in the stone as even that started to melt and break by the wildfire.

"Elena? What's go-" She could barely make out his voice.

"Cersei used the wildfire on the sept, it's falling apart. I'm inside, I can't get out." Elena practically begged to the gods, if they even were out there, that Damon could hear her.

"Transform into a dragon, you'd have more strength and you may be able to fly through." His voice was rushed, worry clear in his voice. She could hear him breathing fast like he was exercising.

"I can't Damon, I'm not a Targaryen. I'm not like dad." Elena dodged yet another huge chuck of stone that fell down beside her. The cracks in the ceiling became bigger and bigger. She saw the stones break and heard them groan as they started to shift.

"The fire didn't burn you, did it? That only happens with Targaryens, Elena." He sounded frustrated. "Just transform into a dragon, dammit! Feel the fire and make it your slave!"

Elena closed her eyes, focusing on the warmth colliding and waving against her skin. It was soothing somehow, the feeling that it couldn't harm her. She focused on that, on the rage of the fire, on the feeling that it could destroy everything in its path. It could even destroy the whole world if it wanted to. Elena felt her hands transform into huge claws, her feathers transform into leather, smooth skin transform into huge unbreakable scales.

"Elena? Please, tell me you're still alive." Damon's voice cracked. Elena didn't focus on that though, no, she narrowed her eyes in determination as she saw the ceiling collapse down on her. She flipped her wings, her eyes widening at the speed she gained with one swing. She soured through the air and when she collided with the ceiling it broke with the impact, debris flying all around her as she flew from the sept.

For a moment she stayed still in the air, looking down at the sept that was colliding on itself. The wildfire melted the stone like a leaf. Instead of the usual sadness that'd fill her when something dreadful like this would happen, anger consumed every fibre of her body. She felt her breath heaten as she turned her head towards the Red Keep.

"Tell Robb to get his army ready to march on King's Landing." Elena growled to Damon. "I'll deal with Cersei."

"Elena, no! Get back here at-" Damon started to speak louder and louder but Elena shut him out, souring through the air till she reached the Red Keep. Only when she was just a few metres away she saw a body fall from a window.

It took Elena too long to realise that it was Tommen. She still tried though, she dived after his body but just as she could reach for him his body had collided with the stone. Elena transformed back into her usual form and knelt down before him.

"Tommen?" She laid her hand on his cheek while the other softly shook his body. "Tommen?!"

She checked for his heartbeat, hoping that she could maybe heal him. He had never done anything wrong after all, he was a good king even though his mother was the devil himself.

"No..." Elena bit on her lip when she felt no heartbeat. "Why would you do this? Why?" She sobbed angrily as she shook his body.

It was when she heard their whispers that Elena noticed that people were gathering around her, pointing at her wings and burnt clothes that were barely covering her body.

"She's a monster." An old lady's lip tremble as she took a few steps back when Elena set her gaze on her.

"She blew up the Sept!"

"Serpent!" Another yelled accusingly.

"She killed our king and queen!"

Elena looked back down at Tommen, realizing that Cersei was going to blame everything on her, just like these people were. Tommen had been her last hope and now he was gone. It was Cersei's plan all along to blame her for the sept, no doubt. But it wasn't herself Elena was worried about, it was Sam and her handmaidens.

Elena flipped her wings and flew towards the window of her chamber, flying through the glass because she was in a haste. It scattered all around her as she landed on the floor, her wings knocking over several vases in the room.

"What happened?!" Sam looked at her. Angelina and Felicity both stood there wide eyed with clothes in their hands. They were packing, just like Elena told them to.

"Cersei blew up the Sept and Tommen is dead." Elena quickly ran to a cabinet to take Gillian's dagger out of it together with his mother's pendant. She then took another cloak and wrapped it around her body for the previous had burnt away. She held Loki in her arms after he had softly howled near her feet.

"We need to leave, now! All of you!" Elena closed one of the trunks the handmaidens had filled and ran out of her chamber with the rest following.

"But I want to stay here!" Angelina protested as she picked up her skirts when she ran after Elena.

"If you want to be hanged for treason for helping me, go ahead." Elena didn't even look over her shoulder as she ran down the stairs.

"Where are we going?" Felicity asked when they reached the courtyard. Elena froze the guards' feet to the ground when they tried to go after them.

"The stables and after that, wherever Robb has his army stationed." Elena reached the stables and threw open the door, quickly taking four horses and handing them over to the rest.

"Elena!!!" A deep voice called from the courtyard as he was running towards them with his sword drawn.

"Go, get out of here!" Elena urged her handmaidens and Sam. She handed Loki over to Sam who held him tightly.

"What about you?" Sam frowned after he had mounted. His long hair was hanging before his frightened hazel eyes as Loki was struggling to get out of his hold ant towards his master.

"I'm right behind you." Elena looked up at him. "Now go!" She slapped the horse who neighed and sped away, together with her handmaiden's horses.

Elena looked as they drove away, knowing that Jaime was walking towards her. She could hear his footsteps right behind her. "Why?" He hissed through his gritted teeth.

"It wasn't me." Elena didn't turn around, only closed her eyes.

"You seriously want me to believe that?" Jaime growled as he took a step closer toward her.

"Think for a moment, dammit!" Elena turned around and looked at him furiously. "Do you seriously think that I, a guardian who'd never harm innocent people, would blow up a whole sept with the chance of dying myself whilst my greatest enemy, your sister, wasn't even there?!"

"Who in the seven hells did it then?!" Jaime yelled back while pointing his sword at Elena, its tip cutting through her skin. She didn't fight back though.

"Who here, in King's Landing, would have a quarrel with the High Sparrow? Who here would have enough power to obtain that much of wildfire?" With each sentence she took a step closer to Jaime even though he had his sword pressed against her skin. "Who here would have obtained enough hatred and fear for the common folk to burn them all at once? Who here would lock up her own son in the keep so he wouldn't be burnt while attending his wife's brother's trial and stay away herself from her own trial?!"

"You can't seriously believe that I'd accuse my own sister-"

"You know its true Jaime!" Elena interrupted him, watching as his eyes widened in horror and disbelief as he finally realised. He turned away from Elena, hiding his face from her eyes. He started to pace in front of her, his gaze cast to the ground.

"I have to leave, before she accuses me of her actions. Before she discovers..." Elena's voice broke, making Jaime look at her as a single tear escaped from her eyes. She knew she couldn't tell him about Tommen. He'd most likely freak out and kill her even though it wasn't her fault.

"I'm sorry, Jaime." Elena looked at him. He had been gentle this whole time. It was unfair how much pain he had to feel. Elena sighed and turned away, walking towards her horse.

"Next time I see you," Jaime said and Elena turned around and they locked eyes. "you'll be my enemy." He continued and walked towards her.

"We always have been enemies." She answered and let Jaime come closer to her. She looked up at his blue eyes. "Nothing has changed."

"For me it has." Jaime frowned. He reached for her jaw, softly tracing her skin with the tips of his finger, stepping even closer towards her as he looked down at her lips.

Elena had never thought she'd let a Lannister, let alone the Kingslayer, ever kiss her. But she did. She felt his cold lips trace hers as his hand held the back of her neck to keep her close. She felt the warmth radiating from his body as she laid her hands against his flat chest, closing her eyes while she kissed him back without truly realizing what she was doing. He was messing with her head, which she knew. Yet she couldn't pull back from him.

It was when the alarm bells started to ring and the shouts of guards came their way that Jaime pulled away to look around them if there were any witnesses.

"I need to go." Elena let his shirt out of her hands and ran towards her horse, mounting it easily. She couldn't fly away because she'd surely get shot by one of the archers on the walls. She looked back down at Jaime, hesitating.

They both knew that she couldn't stay. They also knew that he couldn't go with her either. They just weren't meant to be, it was impossible for them to stay together.

"I'm sorry it had to end this way." Elena bit on her lip to hold in her tears.

"At least we both don't have to endure the wedding ceremony anymore. It's awfully dull." Jaime cracked a smile. He walked towards her side, softly stroking her horse's fur as if he too hesitated. "I guess I will see you on the battlefield." Jaime looked back up at her eyes and tried to hide the sadness that took over his face.

"I will try not to cut your other hand off. That'd be unfortunate." Elena chuckled.

"And I will try not to kill your soon to-be husband." Jaime referred to Robb. Elena wasn't sure but she thought she saw just a hint of jealousy in his eyes.

Elena nodded, looking down at her hands that were holding the reins. She didn't want to fight Jaime, didn't want to go to war with him but she knew she'd have to. "Jaime, if everything would've been different, did we have a chance at..."

"I think we would've."

Elena nodded again, trying to swallow the lump in her throat but only managed to make it worse. "Farewel, Lannister."

Jaime stepped back from her horse to allow her the room to turn towards the gates. He suppressed the urge to hold her back, to keep her there with him. "Goodbye Stark." He whispered as he saw her riding out of the castle with her cape sweeping behind her.

"And good fortune in the wars to come."

Aaaaaaand we're back at war again. How unfortunate.
