The things that destroy us

"This vulnerable world, needs  something more powerful than any of us." - Tony Stark/ Iron Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron

"What happened?" Robb's voice trembled as he looked into Elena' eyes where he saw the darkness leaving and the light green reapearing.

"It's nothing." Elena looked down and pushed Robb off of her and turned to leave. Her head was full of thoughts, how in the seven hells was she going to stop The Dark One? He could read people's thoughts, change his appearance and manipulate people into doing things. It scared her how vulnerable she was to him.

The first thing Elena needed to do though was leave Robb, she could harm him now that she had no control over her actions anymore.

"How long have you been hiding this from me?" Robb sighed and closed the exit of the tent before Elena could leave by pushing it close with one hand. With that he again trapped her only now she had a way to put distance between them.

"It's nothing you should worry about Robb-" Elena stammered and refused to look into Robb's eyes yet she made no attempt to leave. Tears of utter desperation filled her eyes. How could she protect Robb from his enemies if she couldn't even protect him from herself?

"Nothing I should worry about? I almost wanted to kill you just a few seconds ago." Robb half screamed but then sighed and closed his eyes, trying to calm down. In some way he knew that whatever it was could manipulate his mind easier when he was angry. "How can I protect you when I don't even know what's harming you?"

Elena finally looked up at Robb and saw the desperation in his eyes. "Just leave it alone." Elena muttered. Robb immediatelly let out a sigh, how could she hide this from him?

"Look, I don't even know what's happening myself, allright? I tried to stop it but I can't, I..." Elena rushed out, the words falling from her lips as did the tears from her eyes.

"Ssh, don't cry." Robb whispered and pulled Elena against his chest.

"I can't do this without him." Elena cried and grasped Robb's shirt tightly in her hands.

"Yes you can." Robb whispered while a sting of jalousy hit him. "Who killed him?" He spoke up after a few seconds of silence.

"It was the Dark One." Elena whispered while burrying her head in the warmth of his chest.

"Seven hells." Robb cursed and sighed deeply, thinking that all was lost now. If the dark Guardian was truly against them, they'd have no chance of winning.

"I've got to leave, Robb. It's not safe." Elena pushed Robb away and tried to open the door.

"Elena, please. We will arange a council meeting and then we will discuss this."

"Robb, it's not safe for us to be together." Elena whined and closed her eyes. She knew Robb wasn't going to let her go, not after she had read the things Gillian wrote about him.

"Just... wait. Okay?"

"Ramsay Snow escaped." One of Robb's bannermen said and sighed. "We have taken more than 23 prisoners, some of them are wounded."

"See that they are taken care of." Robb ordered. He still took prisoners like before, he didn't want to waiste their lives for nothing. He treated them honorably even after everything that had happened. "How many men have we lost?"

"Around 200 your grace."

"The Boltons have lost sixty times as much as we have." Another man stated and smiled.

"We need our men more than he needs his." Robb simply stated and looked at the map.

"Your grace, there was a letter from Castle Black." The old man announced and gave Robb the letter. Elena looked up at the mention of the castle, immediatelly dreading that something had happened to Jon.

"Mance Rayder is marching on the wall." Robb sighed and read further. "They need more men."

"We've got no time for the wall, your grace. We first need to take the North back and after that the South." One of the bannerman said.

"If Castle Black falls and the wildlings pass the wall, there will be no North to take back." Elena finally spoke up. At this point she just wanted to leave this place and see her last living friend, Jon. Her heart ached just thinking about him.

"If Robb hadn't held you back, You would've still been with Jon." A voice whispered in Elena's head. "Jon would've been safe right now, in your company."

"Shut up." Elena spoke back, not saying it out loud but somehow she send the message to the Dark One. She never had spoken mentally to someone before yet it came as something natural to her.

"You know I'm right." The voice taunted her, Elena could hear his smile through his words.

"I said shut up." Elena hissed, this time accidently out loud. Her eyes widened when she realized what she had done.

"Elena? Are you allright?" Robb frowned, dumbfounded. She usually didn't curse, something Catelyn taught her.

"Yeah I'm fine. Just... Go on." Elena stuttered and shifted uncomfortably. Her head was aching with the effort that it took to keep the Dark One out of her head. It felt like she was slowly losing control.

"So, we can rebuild Winterfell and wait for the Lannisters to attack, what they are going to do when they find out where we are." One of the bannerman offered. Elena looked around, had she missed a part?

"He's right, your grace. If we can rebuild it on time it will be easy to defend it."

"You're going back home?" the Dark One spoke up again in Elena's head. "Well, home... I'd rather say prison."

"You know nothing about my home." Elena hissed back in her head. She looked around at all the councilmen to see if she had said it out loud. They didn't look at her so she must've done it well.

"Oh, I do. Don't you remember what my powers are?" His taunting voice spoke up again. "You know, I still don't understand how you and Robb came to be, you hated him with all your heart."

"That's none of your business." Elena shifted on her feet. The Dark One had seen her memories, every single one of them. Now they were truly doomed. "Look, I don't know why you're doing this but please, just leave us alone."

"But it's so much fun seeing you struggle." He chuckled. Elena sighed and concentrated on the council again.

"My scouts found it, she married him yesterday." One of the bannerman said proudly and stood up tall. Elena frowned, what in the seven hells were they talking about?

"If he married her, she won't give us any support. Littlefinger is the Lannister' lapdog." Robb sighed and put both his hands on the table.

"Your grace, we could always try."

"No, Littlefinger has always been loyal to the Lannisters. If he's truly married to Laysa now, we can't count on their support." Robb said, already a hint of frustration in his voice.

"Your grace, that wasn't the only news from the Eyrie." One of the bannerman said and looked around uncomfortably before he spoke up again. "Your aunt Laysa commited suicide a few days after."

"You see, you haven't even got the slightest chance of winning this war, all your friends are dying like flies." The Dark One said.

"At least I have the guts to fight for something." Elena shot back.

"Feisty, I like it."

"What?! Where is she now?!" Robb' eyes lighted up and filled with relief. Elena looked around again in confusion, having missed the last part. At this point her head was aching so bad that everything around her seemed to turn.

"She's still in the Eyrie, with your nephew and Littlefinger as far as we know." One of Robb's bannerman answered.

"Wait, hold up." Elena sighed and tried to get the ache out of her head. "Who are we talking about?"

"Your King's sister, my lady." Everyone looked at her in confusion.

"Elena, are you sure you're allright?" Robb asked, he knew that something like that wouldn't just slip past Elena. He knew how much she loved Sansa.

"Yes I'm fine." Elena frowned, feeling dizy. A small spark of enlightment filled her by knowing that Sansa was allright. After all, it only meant that she had done her duty better than she originally thought.

"Already feeling tired? Like you're going to sink right onto the floor?" the Dark One asked in Elena's head.

"No, I'm fine." She answered back, lying.

"Of course you are..." The Dark One chuckled. "You know I can read your thoughts, right?"

"I just haven't slept well lately, alright? Can you give me a break or something?"

"It's not the sleep, honey. It's your power, weakening."

"Call me honey again and I swear I will kill you." Elena hissed and clenched her fists. Her sight became less and less precise, the lines off everyone's bodies fading.

"Oooh, so we're down to threats, I like it."

"You know, I kind off suspected more of you, you being the one they call the Dark One and all." Elena huffed. Maybe this way he would leave her alone.

"Well, I think the same off you."

Elena's head shot up at the voice, this one not in her head. Suddenly everything was clear again, only the place were Robb first stood now stood the Dark One. Somehow Robb had dissapeared from her sight.

"What are you doing?" Elena looked around in fear. She had to find Robb, maybe he was harmed. "What is happening?!"

"It's something called manipulation. I've always found it quite funny." The Dark One chuckled and lazily leaned on the table, his eyes fixed on Elena. She inspected him. He looked different than from the first day she met him. This man before her seemed even more handsome, with clear green eyes that twinkled with mischief, high cheekbones, slightly toned skin, thick, dark eyebrows and a prominent jaw that gave his face a even more stern look.

"Stop it." Elena turned around in circles, suddenly they were somewhere else, they were standing in some kind of a great hall. Then Elena recognized it, it was the great hall of The Twins.

"Pity you couldn't save her, I liked her." The Dark One pouted and looked sideways at the bodies on the ground, one of them being Catelyn. "She was braver than most of the women, you know."

"What are you doing?!" Elena yelled, tears welling up in her eyes. She saw all of them lying there, her father, Eddard, Rickon, Brann, Catelyn and Gillian.

"I'm glad that Ned didn't make it though, he was boring, always doing the right thing." The Dark One yawned as he looked at the body of Eddard. "In the end, that's what killed him."

"Please, get me out of here." Elena' limbs were weakening.

"Sure, why not." The Dark One snapped his fingers and suddenly they were in Dreadfort, during the battle. They were standing in the midst of it, in the courtyard. Elena could see herself fighting beside Robb while Gillian was running down the stairs off the wall. They were not really there though, they couldn't touch anything, it'd just go right through them.

"It's kind of a funny thing you know, me and your little dead friend were quite similiar."

"You are nothing alike." Elena growled, anger filling her body.

"Well, supose we weren't. He was also a bit boring and too caring. You know, with the orphanage and all." The Dark One smiled and looked at Gillian, who was now picking up the plank that was trapping the child underneath. "And you, Elena, you cared too much for him. So I decided that I had to kill him. After all, loves makes you weak."

"You didn't." Elena stated, though confusion filled her voice. She remembered the face of the soldier that had killed Gillian and she remembered his expression when she had killed him.

"Gillian!" The Elena from the past screamed behind them.

"You see that soldier there?" The Dark One pointed at the soldier who was going to kill Gillian. He was now slowly walking towards his target.

"I manipulated him just like I'm doing to you now. I was standing there." He pointed again, only this time at a spot in the burning building.

"No..." Elena realized what had truly happened when she saw the soldier's eyes change color from blue to dark.

"He was thinking about helping the child escape, the poor man. I decided that he should just kill Gillian and get it over with."

"You killed him." Elena' body was filling with anger, she was trying to contain it. Somewhere in her head she heard people saying her name.

"Yes I did." the Dark One smiled and watched Gillian die all over again.

Elena suddenly launched at him, she grasped her dagger that she had kept in her belt and shoved it against his throat. She could hear his chuckle before her headache became even worse.

Suddenly everything beame foggy again. When her sight was finally clear, Elena wasn't holding the dagger against the Dark One's throat, no, but against the throat of Robb.

His eyes widened, he was clearly surprised at the sudden attack, especially because it was Elena attacking him with no reason whatsoever. Elena's breath came out in short, raspy puffs when she realized what she had done and was doing.

Everything was silent until one of the gaurds yelled: "Protect the king!" and started to charge at Elena. Suddenly everyone started to attack her.

Elena could see the confusion in his eyes when blood started to drop from the place where Elena held her dagger. Elena gasped and pulled away.

"Robb?" Elena stuttered.

Robb muttered one last word, something he didn't expect himself to ever say to her or even let her do.

"Run."
