Stand by me

"The ones we love never leave us."

The cold winter air blew through Elena's hair when she finally escaped the dungeons. Her knees trembled and bowed, making Elena and Louis fall down on the ground.

A soft whimper escaped from Elena's lips as her fingers felt the mud seep between them. It was a taste of freedom, just a small moment of victory. It filled her head, making her oblivious to the fact that there were other men looking at them from the other side of the courtyard.

"There she is!" Elena heard Ramsay's voice, making the small moment of happiness disappear. She let out a groan of despair, her hand searching for Louis' body.

"No.." Elena sobbed and clutched onto Louis, trying to drag him away from their approaching enemy. She could feel the freedom slipping from her fingers when she heard Ramsay's footsteps coming closer.

"We were just talking about you." Ramsay smiled when he crouched down next to Elena. He turned her around so she was laying on her back, her eyes staring up at the sky above her.

"He's not doing very well, is he?" Ramsay asked while poking Louis' body. He shrugged. "So much for a guardian."

"That's enough, Bolton." Elena heard another voice.

"Damon?" Her voice croaked as she lifted her head up to meet his eyes. "Damon!" A soft destroyed laugh escaped her mouth as she tried to get up.

"You have to help Louis, Damon, please." Her smile vanished and was replaced with a frown when the man only looked at her, not moving a muscle. "Damon?"

"What are you doing?" Elena's voice broke when the man walked towards her and knelt down before her, only looking at her with no emotion on his face.

"Damon, what's going on?" Elena panicked. "You have to help him!"

"Damon, please!" Elena cried when he continued to do nothing. She looked at his familiar pitch black hair, pale skin, muscled body, prominent jaw and high cheekbone.

"Damon?" Elena's voice was just above a whisper, all of the hope gone. Only then she noticed the green in his eyes, the green that was supposed to be blue.

"What have you done to her?" Ethan looked up at Ramsay and then back to Elena, his hand cupping her cheek while examining her face.

"Nothing out of the ordinary." Ramsay shrugged and gave Louis another poke with the tip of his shoe. When The Dark One glared at him he continued. "Just a few cuts and bruises here and there, maybe a broken rib and a fractured collarbone, dislocated shoulder and a broken arm, dehydration and food poisoning."

"Other than that, nothing." Ramsay shrugged as if it were nothing.

"You won't hurt her physically ever again." The dark one stood up, ignoring Elena's whimpers. "We can use her as leverage. My brother never likes it when something happens to his dear little sister."

"What?" Elena looked up at him, The Dark One was the only one to hear her soft voice. She frowned, her heart filling with dread when all of the puzzle pieces clicked together in her head.

"So she's supposed to be my aunt?" A female voice spoke up behind her. Elena looked up at her, seeing the resemblance between her and Ethan; the black hair, green eyes and the high cheekbones.

"I thought she was more..." Abigail frowned as she looked down at the weakened body before her. "Guardian-ish."

"Did you bring what I asked for?" Elena saw The Dark One turn his head towards Abigail.

"He's alive and well, not remembering anything. Just like you said." Abigail smiled.

"Ethan?" Elena whispered and looked up at him. He stared back at her, his eyes cold like she meant nothing to him.

The Dark One didn't show any emotion whatsoever as he looked down at his little sister. "Bring them back to the dungeons." He ordered and turned to walk away.

~

"Do you know why I hate fire?" Louis chuckled, his eyes empty. He was hanging back in his chains, Abigail had healed him enough to make him breathe normally again. She didn't let him see her face though, she left before he woke up.

"It's a rather funny story actually." Louis smiled sadly as he looked at Elena. Ramsay had attached more chains on her to make sure she wouldn't escape again.

Especially now that Robb and Stannis were attacking Winterfell, Ramsay was extra careful when it came to holding his prisoners. It was like he was guarding his toys.

"You never told me." Elena mumbled, trying her best to keep her eyes open. A sigh escaped her lips as she was laying on the floor, her wings sprawled out behind her.

"It was a woman." Louis chuckled. He flinched when they heard another blast, hearing the wall crumble. "A captivating woman, to say the least. She had a beautiful voice, mesmerizing eyes and a smile that could make everyone melt. That wasn't what I loved most about her though, she always seemed to see everything in a positive way. She never complained, never spoke ill of anyone. She had a skill that not everyone has."

Elena looked up at him, her body too weak to sit up or to even move an inch.

"She had the skill to make everyone laugh." louis smiled. "It didn't take long for me to fall for her."

"I entrusted her with all of my secrets. I told her about my power which I had just discovered, I told her about my family, told her about everything I did actually." Louis smiled at the memory. "I loved her with all my heart and gave everything I had."

"You wouldn't believe what happened." Louis chuckled as he looked at Elena. "A week after I had told her about my powers and what I could do, there were guards holding my family in my house when I got back from her."

"They threatened to kill my family if I did not come with them. When my mother heard that, she began to fight against the guard that held her. Soon enough all of the guards had pulled their swords."

"Louis." Elena spoke when she saw the tears flowing down his cheek. He continued his story though, too caught up in the memory.

"I couldn't do anything, not without triggering the guards who held their daggers against my sisters' and brothers' throats." Louis' voice became louder with each word. "They didn't care if they had to kill one person or my entire family. They chose for the last, probably thinking that that'd make it all easier. They bound all of us together in the midst of our house. We were unable to move, unable to speak and unable to look at each other."

"One of the guards removed her helmet. It was her, the woman I loved, staring at me with empty eyes. She set fire to our house with us still in it." Louis sighed and closed his eyes. "I could hear my little sister's screams beside me, I could feel her body squirming against the heat. She was so young, too young for anything of that."

Louis took a deep breath when his voice broke. "When the flames were already licking our bodies someone suddenly barged into the fire and grasped the first human he could find. When he cut me loose, I tried using my speed to quickly get my whole family out of the house. It didn't work."

"Damon saved my life. When he had dragged me outside whilst shielding my protesting body from the heat the whole building collapsed, there was no way we could get back in." Louis bit his lip while trying to contain his cries. "The fire burned my whole family, my two brothers, three sisters and my mother whilst I looked."

"All because I fell in love with the wrong woman." Louis whispered. "For a while I didn't see the use in living."

"None of that is your fault, Louis." Elena said, her eyes closing. He nodded, letting out a deep sigh.

"I just wish that I had done more good in my life to make up for the mistakes I've made." Louis said.

Elena nodded, her thoughts going back to the fact that she now knew who her true family was. She thought she'd be happy knowing it, she thought that maybe this was her chance at a normal life.

That wish was crumbled and broken now that she knew who her family truly was. Her father was the Mad King, dead. Her brother was the Dark One, taken over by darkness. Her other brother was Damon, missing. Her cousins Abigail and Felicity, one murdered in cold blood and the other working for the Dark One.

It wasn't exactly a family to be proud of. In fact, it caused Elena to lose even more hope. It caused her to think about why she was still living, why fate had chosen her to suffer like this. Maybe her only purpose in life was to fail at protecting the ones she loved. Maybe that was her fate.

The thought of Robb and home seemed so far away, like she only dreamt about them and that they didn't even exists. Elena couldn't even picture him, she couldn't remember his voice, she couldn't remember the way it felt when he held her, she couldn't feel his warmth. First Robb was the memory that kept her sane but now it was only destroying her further.

Louis lifted his head when he heard Ramsay descending the staircase on the other side of the door. He sighed deeply. "Here we go again."

~

"Are the siege weapons ready?" Robb asked, standing in front of the whole army. His eyes were set on Winterfell, dreading the moment he'd have to use the trebuchets to destroy the gate. He was afraid that if he'd use the trebuchets that one of stones it would fire would hit Elena.

"Ready to fire." Stannis confirmed, letting his horse stop next to Robb's. Steven stood on the other side only he wasn't riding a horse, he stood there with his wings unwrapped behind his back, ready for Robb's signal.

"Are you sure they will meet us in the field?" Steven asked, his gaze fixed on the gates. Robb wasn't planning to use the trebuchets, he knew that Roose Bolton would attack him outside of the castle.

"They will." Robb stated, his eyes determined. "He knows he outnumbers us 4 to 1, he knows the odds are in his favour."

"He knows that a battle on the field is more honourable than cowering inside a castle that is not his." Robb continued.

"There they come." Damon said when the gates opened and thousands knights and soldiers rushed out, almost all of them mounted. The army immediately charged towards the smaller one, not wasting any time.

"Men!" Robb yelled and turned his horse around, facing his army. He saw the fear in their eyes, the hopelessness. "Four years ago I called all of you to help me fight a war, to free my father from the Lannisters and to save my sisters from their grasps. "

"Now, my father is gone, most of our lands and people destroyed, all because of one traitor." Robb narrowed his eyes. "Roose Bolton."

"He was the one to betray us, he was the one who helped Walder Frey with his treacherous act, he was the one who killed our brothers, wives and sons!" Robb paused for a moment, looking at all of the soldier's faces. "You all know what happened that night. They made us believe that we were safe. That until they locked us in and fired at us, killing your queen and my mother without mercy. We all lost people we held dear that night, more than I dare to count. Roose Bolton betrayed you when we needed him the most. He betrayed us in exchange for gold and land. Now there he is, living inside our home, drinking our wine and sleeping with our women!"

"My brothers," Robb sighed deeply. "You've stood by me during these whole 4 years and never have you failed my trust. Not even when there was no hope left, when no one saw the light. Not even after I made mistakes, not after defeat. You stood by me without doubt."

Robb's voice became softer, all the men could still hear him because everyone was silent, listening closely to their king. "I may not have the right to ask this of any of you, but will you follow me, one last time?"

Some of the men said yes loudly, others nodded.

"Will you follow me into battle, to kill the men who took our land, our home?!" Robb yelled. Now almost everyone screamed or cheered, their spirits lifting up.

"They say that we are wolves, as deadly as the night. They say we can transform into giant direwolves ourselves if we want. They say we can't be killed!" Robb smiled. "Let's give them a taste of our anger!"

"Men!" Robb yelled and then paused for a second, having captivated everyone's attention. "Let's take back our home."

Now the yells and battle shouts were deafening, all of the men unsheathing their swords, holding them in the air. Robb turned his horse back around towards the approaching enemy, unsheathed his sword and then looked at Steven.

"Are you with me?" Robb asked.

"Till the death." Steven nodded, being barely audible due to the noise the army behind them made.

Robb looked back at Roose's army, all of the fear he had before vanished now that his men were ready. Grey Wind bared his teeth, growling loudly whilst standing next to Robb.

He unsheathed his sword, holding it up in the air before shouting; "For Winterfell, and for Gillian!"
