Peace offer
It had taken a long time before Elena finally snapped out of the trance she was in. She was just staring down at the doll, wondering how a person like Damon, such a strong man could ever be trapped in such a small object. That wasn't what the problem was though, how in the seven hells was she ever going to get her brother out of it? They didn't know how Ethan had done it and the only few persons who understood how it worked were Damon and Ethan. Obviously the Dark One wasn't going to help since he was the person who put him there in the first place.
Steven had shaken her from that train of thought. He was still trapped in the silver cage, unable to do anything but sit and wait. It hadn't taken a long time before Elena found a way to get him out and soon enough they were flying out of the forest and towards the castle.
But the things they saw, the things that had happened on the battlefield, it was devastating. They saw the last few battles between the last few standing people on the field. There were thousands of dead bodies, litres of blood literally flowing down the now red tainted hill. And then there were the screams of the wounded, those being the most horrific.
For Elena though the most terrible thing she saw was Abigail with Aidan in her arms, shielding herself and the body from the enemies around them. Jon was there, protecting her with longclaw glasped in his hands. Before Elena had arrived Jon had killed the last Lannister that was close to him.
"Elena!" His exhausted expression lit up when she landed a few meters away from him. He ran towards her and enveloped her in his arms, pulling her close while she buried her face in his chest.
"What happened?" Elena asked after letting go of Jon, walking toward Aidan's body. There was a peaceful look on his face, like he was only sleeping. Then a sudden terror hit her, what if Damon was also dead? What if Ethan hadn't put the same spell on him as Damon put on him, what if her brother was dead?
"His grieve got to him." Abigail looked up at Elena who then noticed her shaken expression. "Where's my father?"
Elena tried to swallow the lump that was forming in her throat and looked down at the ground, avoiding Abigail's gaze. She couldn't look her in the eye and tell her that her father, who she had just met a few days ago, died at the hands of her own uncle with whom she had lived almost her whole life.
"Elena, where's my father?!" Abigail stood up and grasped her shoulders, not caring that Elena was probably the queen to be, she was only worrying about her father.
"Ethan put a spell on him." Elena took the doll out of her pocket without meeting Abigail's eyes. "He's trapped." Elena finally looked up at Abigail while she handed the doll to her.
"Do we know how the get him out?" Abigail let out a small sigh of relief knowing that her father wasn't dead, that there was still hope. But when Elena again diverted her eyes away from hers to look at the ground, that feeling soon vanished again.
"You've got to be kidding me!" Abigail yelled and threw her hands in the air. "Why can't, for once in my life, everything just work out?!"
"Listen, Abigail, Dam-... Your father is not yet dead." Steven walked towards her with his arms outstretched, trying to calm her down. Then he frowned, looking down at the ground. "At least, I think." He mumbled and let out a sigh.
Elena looked at Steven with fright, scared that also he had lost hope. There had to be at least one among them to have a splinter of hope, at least a little, to reassure her that everything was going to be all right. But then she heard the sound of hoofs on the ground. She looked up and met Robb's gaze. Within seconds the worry was wiped from her mind, knowing that Robb, no matter what, would always help her even if he himself had no clue how to.
"Elena!" He yelled as he jumped off his horse and practically ran towards her. She did the same and soon was engulfed in his warmth, taking in his scent while she buried her head in his chest. "Thank the gods, you're all right." Robb held her tightly. He let her go too quickly in Elena's taste, looking around him at all the survivors.
"Where's Damon?" He looked down at Elena while he wrapped his arms around her waist protectively.
"Yeah, Elena, why don't you tell him how your fucking plan almost killed my father!" Abigail growled while pacing in front of the two, huffing every few seconds with her arms folded before her chest.
"Hey, watch your tone." Robb went into defence mode real quick. His gaze followed Abigail who only glared back at him. Then he saw the body behind her and soon forgot about Abigail's words as he stepped away from Elena and towards Aidan. He didn't need to say anything, he knew that the others understood how he felt.
"We can't go on like this." Robb muttered and sighed as he knelt down in front of Aidan's body, putting his sword in the old man's hands and laying it on his chest.
"What do you mean, your grace?" Steven knelt down on the opposite of him. Robb noticed his wounds, the weird angle his leg was in and the cuts on his arms and chest. He also noticed how quickly he was healing, he literally saw the skin forming again.
"We need to end this, and quick. We can't follow the plan we have now, otherwise too many people will die. We need to find a quick way into King's Landing so we can kill Cersei, Jaime and Tommen and end this." Robb looked at Steven's light blue eyes. "With Damon and Aidan both gone, I don't know how we're ever going to continue like this."
"Damon isn't gone yet." Elena gestured towards the doll in Abigail's hand. Robb noticed and frowned, knowing that once Ethan was trapped in the same object. "To get him out I need information from Ethan, which he isn't going to give. Unless there's someone else who knows how this works."
"There is someone, in King's Landing." Steven spoke up. "Though I don't think that's of much help since he works for the Lannisters."
"So we're basically screwed." Abigail snapped.
"That's not entirely true."
"No offense, captain, but my father was the strongest among us and basically the only one who could've stopped my uncle. And since we're not getting him back any time soon since he's stuck in this little piece of shit." She threw it to the ground, making almost everyone around her jump a little in shock. "Yes, your grace, we're screwed!" She threw her hands in the air.
Abigail crossed her arms before her chest, looking at everyone individually. She continued to bicker on, waving her hands in the air furiously. "I mean, man, I should've stayed with my uncle instead of choosing you losers and then maybe my dad would've still been fucking breathing. I mean, really?! A fucking doll?! And then you're a king and you're still not- "Jon put his hands on her arm which made her shut up immediately, looking up at his eyes. "What?!" Abigail growled but then noticed the distressed looks on everyone's faces which weren't even directed to her. She turned around.
"Are you fucking kidding me?!" She yelled when yet another army appeared from behind the hill, Lannisters, even bigger then the former army and Robb's combined. The battle before was just a taste of what was to come. Abigail turned around again and saw everyone there, Steven with big eyes, Elena with her mouth wide open and Robb just looked like he was shitting his pants right there.
Abigail threw her swords to the ground and glasped the doll tightly in her arms before stomping towards the castle with big strides. "Fuck this shit, I'm out!"
~
"No Robb, I'm going to stay here, with you. I won't let you die alone." The whole castle was in complete chaos. People were running around searching for either loved ones or their weapons so they could at least die fighting.
"Elena, please." He sighed and looked at her with pleading eyes while caressing her cheek.
"No!" Elena swatted his hand away. "Look, Steven and Abigail can get Arya, Sansa and Jon to safety. There's no need for me to be there. My place is here, with you."
"Elena, just go with them, please. There is no hope here. At least now it will end here, with me." Robb took her by both her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. He had trouble speaking to words, knowing that with the enormous army out there he didn't have more than a day to live. The thing that broke him the most though was the look in Elena's eyes. "Listen, you can take them to wherever you like, have the peaceful life you always wanted. Just go with them, that's an order."
"I don't care about your damned orders Robb!" Elena yelled with tears flowing down from her cheeks. She took his face in her hands and pulled him down, kissing him deeply. She grasped the back of his neck tightly, pulling him closer. Just as fast as it started, the kiss ended. "I promised, didn't I?" Elena whispered. Robb sighed as he leaned his forehead against hers, closing his eyes and inhaling her scent.
"I promised that I would protect you, no matter what. That also means that I stay with you when all the hope is gone Robb. Because I belong here, with you and no one else." Her voice broke at the end of the sentence.
"So this means that I can't change your mind then?" He sounded defeated as his fingers waved through her hair.
"Never." Elena replied. They both heard Arya's furious shouts from far away, yelling that she wasn't going to run that she wanted to fight. She wasn't going to leave her brother to die. But to Robb the decision for her to run was already made.
"Can you do me one favour though?" Robb opened his eyes, blocking out everything else and focused them on Elena's green ones. She nodded for him to continue. "Can you promise me that when this is over, you will give me your hand in marriage?"
"Robb." Elena chuckled softly and sadly as she pulled back from him a little so she could look at him with her hand caressing his jaw. "There is no after."
"I know, I just... Give me this one thing. I don't care that we're going to die. I just want you to know that I love you, that even though all hope is lost I still believe in us. I want to be able to call you mine when I die, to know that you will and always will be my wife." Robb took a moment to take a breath, holding in his tears. "Please, Elena Snow, give me this and I promise you that you won't be alone ever again."
There was a moment of silence as the two looked at each other until Elena kissed him softly on the lips, tracing the bows of them, waving her hand through his auburn curls. When she pulled back her slightly swollen lips formed the words Robb had always wanted to hear. "Yes."
Robb chuckled softly and pulled her closer again, savouring the moment for however short it will be. For within a few seconds everything could turn to dust again.
And it did. He saw Steven walking towards them quickly with long strides. "Your grace, Elena." He breathed. "I thought you might want to see this."
"Steven, why aren't you already miles away from here with my brother and sisters?!"
"That's just it, your grace, I don't think it's necessary to run." Steven said quickly and then gestured for the two to follow him.
Robb took Elena's hand in his and pulled her along through the courtyard and towards the walls of Harrenhal where his family stood side by side, looking down at the field on the other side. He could hear Elena's shaky breath when they neared the top and gave her a slight squeeze in reassurance.
"At first I thought I was seeing things but Sansa and Arya saw them too." Steven spoke when they neared the top of the wall. "Look."
Robb did and as did Elena. There were 6 or 7 riders coming their way, Lannisters, one glad in silver armour. "That's Jaime Lannister." Elena frowned and squinted her eyes to see better. "They're carrying white flags?" She looked up at Robb.
"I think they mean to negotiate, your grace." Steven spoke.
Robb narrowed his eyes at the approaching figures, knowing that no matter how bad he hated the Lannister, he had to at least try this once. "And negotiate we will."
