For the watch

"As far as I know I just wanted to do what was right, I just don't know what that is anymore." - Captain America, Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The morning was cold that day in Winterfell, just as it always was. The party that was heading towards the Night's watch was readying their horses. Robb was glad but also devastated by their leave. He would lose his brother Jon but the imp, Tyrion Lannister was going to leave too. Robb hated the Lannisters even though he had no real reason to. He guessed that it was just a gut feeling while in reality his suspicons were true.

Elena stood shivering next to Robb, they were waiting to say their goodbyes to Jon. Robb hadn't left her side since their fight, he was afraid that she would run away even after she had agreed to stay with him.

Not that he was wrong to think that, Elena was thinking about leaving still. She just couldn't bear the thought of Jon leaving. She looked up at Robb who was standing next to her. He had his mask on, his face was empty of any emotion, he looked stern and stood up straight. He always looked like that when they were outside.

Elena sighed and looked back at Jon who they were walking towards.

"Next time I see you, you will be all in black." Robb smiled at his brother and patted him on the back.

"It was always my color." Jon smiled back. His eyes turned towards Elena, who was standing there with tears filling her eyes. She looked down, avoiding Jon's eyes. Robb noticed the lack of reaction from her so he took her hand and squeezed in reassuringly.

"Don't freeze up there, will you?" Elena sighed and looked up at the dark brown eyes of her friend. She took in a shaky breath and looked back down.

"I won't." Jon smiled, his heart silently breaking at the sight of Elena's eyes. He took her into his arms and hugged her tightly, pulling her trembling body against his.

"Say goodbye to Gillian for me, will you?" Jon's voice broke a little, only Elena noticed it though. Gillian couldn't be there, he was with his father back at his own home. Robb was saying goodbye to Benjen, his uncle who was also leaving.

"I will if you take care of yourself out there." Elena buried her head in the soft cloak Jon was wearing. "Don't get stabbed to death or anything."

"I won't, don't worry." Jon chuckled sadly and let Elena go.

"And watch out for those men out there, they can't be trusted." Elena urged on, trying the warn Jon for all the dangers life at the watch could bring.

"They won't hurt me, they will be my brothers." Jon smiled genuinely at Elena, he was happy to know that she worried, it meant that she truly cared for him.

"And you better stay with Robb, you may be a guardian but you also need protection." Jon looked at his brother, silently asking him to look out for his friend. Robb nodded, understanding what Jon was asking.

"I promise." Elena said. Jon nodded, relieved and ready to go.

"Farewell, Snow." Robb smiled at him.

"And you, Stark, Elena." Jon nodded at them. He then walked away without looking back, leaving his brother and friend behind. Never would he have thought what kind of horrors the future would bring. If he had known, he would've never left them.

"Are you all right?" Robb whispered and took Elena's hand in his, something he never did in public.

"I have a bad feeling about this." Elena sighed deeply, her guts telling her to follow Jon. Her heart on the other hand was telling her to stay her with Robb, so that's what she did.

Robb sighed and then squeezed her hand again. Elena could feel his gaze burning into the side of her face when he spoke up hesitantly but truthfully. "I love you."

Elena's head shot up at the words and her eyes found his. He had never said this before nor did he ever open up and talk about his feelings. But now he stood there, looking deeply into Elena's eyes. The hesitation had disappeared from his eyes, he knew he had spoken the truth.

"I love you." Elena said back, a smile finding its way onto her face.

"They're rebuilding it." Elena said while looking at Winterfell from the top of a hill. The Dark One, who apparently could transform into a panther, had been riding for 2 days without ever stopping. Elena wondered how he could do that. He had been carrying her on his back yet he never slowed a bit.

The Dark One nodded and stood next to Elena, his gaze lingering on the castle. Roose Bolton was rebuilding it much to Elena's dismay. The Dark One could feel the hesitation radiating from Elena's body which was almost begging him to be read. He respected her too much to read her mind again though. He couldn't help but feel her emotions though, all these years of knowing everything about everyone had made him curious as to how people reacted to certain things. He also got kind of used to knowing everything about everyone so it was hard for him to not read her mind.

"Where are you taking me?" Elena asked while still looking at her destroyed home. She knew there was no use in leaving The Dark One. He had proven himself unguilty of manipulating Robb and her. Right now Elena wondered why he was helping them.

"To the Watch." The Dark One said and sat down on the ground, lazily leaning back while still looking quite dangerous and magnificent.

"Why?" Elena's heart made a jump in delight, she was going to see Jon again. But the joy didn't outmatch the pain she felt. She missed Robb, more than she ever had.

"You know why." The Dark One stated while eating the deer he had caught earlier. Elena was dumbfounded by the fact that the man managed to look attractive even while eating from a bone. The way his pitch black hair hung before his blue eyes could make any woman's knees go weak.

"I do I just don't understand why you want to go there. You've never seemed interested in protecting the realm before." Elena looked down at him. She knew that a wildling army was going to attack the wall. If they'd beat the Night's Watch they'd destroy every village in their way to the south.

"You know nothing about me." The Dark One stated, anger filling his voice.

"Yet you know everything about me." Elena stated and sat down next to him, her feet hanging off the cliff. She refused to react to the anger in his voice. Maybe it was because she was too tired to fight or maybe because she was just a little bit scared of him. The fire behind them warmed their backs, it was cold that night so they could use it.

"I do." The Dark One simply stated.

"Why did you take me with you?" Elena asked and looked at him.

"I needed some company along the way, it gets quite boring on your own." He smirked while picking the remaining flesh off the bone.

"But why me?" Elena urged.

"Do you always ask so many questions?" The Dark One rolled his eyes and then threw the bone away, watching it falling from the cliff. He remained silent for a while as he tried to find the right words to say. "You're more powerful than you think you are. We need someone like you during the battle." He looked up, sighing deeply.

"Most of all though, you're different from the others. While most people tend to look after themselfs, you see that as your last priority. Mostly that would mean that the human in question would be too afraid to stick up for himself yet you are strong, independent. I've met a lot of people, Elena. More than I care to count. Beggars, kings, merchants, thiefs. Yet I've never met someone like you." He let his words sink in until he continued with a smile playing on his lips. "Besides, your little prince would've killed you if I hadn't taken you with me."

"So you're on our side?" Elena raised her eyebrows.

"I'm on no one's side."

"Don't you have someone to protect?" Elena asked. When he didn't answer Elena continued. "A friend? Family? A lover? No one?"

"Not anymore." The Dark one cringed and looked down. "It's easier this way, no one to bring you down, no responsibilities, no fear and no rules to hold you down."

"So you don't care who wins the war? You just sit back on your butt and do nothing?" Elena asked, anger laced in her voice. The Dark One had so many powers he could use to end the war here and now. It made Elena angry to know that he didn't even use them to protect people.

"Men can fight their wars. When you end one, they will find another reason to start yet another war." He threw some rocks into the abyss in front of them. "It's an ongoing story, it repeats itself over and over again."

"You could've ended this war, why didn't you?!" Elena stood up and glared at him, her hands freezing by her powers.

"It's not ours to fight." The Dark One hissed and glared at Elena. She could feel his fury, she realized that he was way stronger than her. So she sit down again and looked away in anger.

"So I'm the only guardian left who protects her king." Elena said silently and looked down at the ice on her hand. She could feel the pain in her heart when she thought about Robb.

"No you're not." The Dark One said and leaned back. "The other who was manipulating you and the little prince charming is one of the south."

"So he fights for the Lannisters?" Elena asked.

"Yes he does." The Dark One answered. "You've missed quite some things, you know."

"Like what?"

"Well you know that Littlefinger has the Vale now and that Tommen is king. But have you heard about Tyrion? Or about Daenerys? Meereen?" The Dark one threw another rock into the air.

"Tell me." Elena sat up straight and looked at him, curious.

"Tyrion is on a trial for the murder of his father, he's most likely going to die. That I learned a week ago. Before that I was in Meereen with the queen, she has taken control of the free cities and is planning to rule them. She still has her three dragons." He told Elena.

"How do you know all this?"

"By reading minds." He stated, still looking at the burned castle that was Winterfell. Elena sighed and looked at it too. She felt weak compared to him, the only power she had mastered was ice. When she tried water a few days back she couldn't even control a single drop of it.

"So you can read minds, manipulate them, transform into an animal and cast fire?" Elena sighed deeply and also threw a rock in front of her.

"More or less." The Dark one sighed. "I can do a lot more though. Lately I just don't see the use in using them. I guess I'm just tired of it all."

"You're not that dark, are you?" Elena looked at his toned skin, his dark eyes and his middle length black hair. For the first time she saw the emotion in his eyes. Somehow she realized that he was broken, that he was lost. It seemed like she had broken through his wall.

"You have no idea."

"Your grace, we couldn't find any traces. Even the hounds cannot pick up their trail." An Umber told Robb during the council.

"What was that thing anyway?" The one who was the lord of the Karstarks now spoke up.

"It was another Guardian." Robb said while studying the map before him. He couldn't believe what he had done. He had chased down one of only things that mattered to him and made her flee. Sometimes he could still hear someone else's voice in his head but it was slowly fading now.

"That doesn't matter now, they're gone. We now need to think about what we're going to do next." Robb said. Grey Wind was lying next to his feet, the wolf hadn't left his side ever since he was attacked by the panther.

"Your grace, if I may, I have thought of some things we could do." A Glover spoke up, he was around his thirties. He had seen many battles, Robb trusted him.

"We're now close to Karhold. We could go there and strengthen our weapons and reinforcements. My scouts have told me that Roose Bolton is rebuilding Winterfell. We can attack them when they're still working, their men will be weary and tired." the Glover proposed.

"If they're already rebuilding it now, I say we immediately attack them. If we first go to Karhold maybe they will already have built the castle." Rickard Karstark said.

"No, I think we can better go back south. We have the Twins. We could attack Casterly Rock like we planned to do before the Red Wedding." A Darry said.

"Or we could first take Torrhen's Square. The Boltons will be surrounded by us." Tallhart said.

"I say we hide in the Wolfswood, watching them until the time is right to attack." The Blackwood said.

"We have too small a army for any of these things." Robb said and looked up at all his councilmen. There was a Ryger, a Whent, Blackwood, Bracken, Mallister, Vance, Piper, Karstark, Umber, Flint, Mormont, Hornwood, Cerwyn, Reed, Glover and a Tallhart. All of these houses were sworn to him. Robb had a lot of families that obeyed him and yet he had not enough men to lay siege to a castle.

"But your grace, what will you have us do?" Hornwood said hopelessly. Robb looked at everyone before saying:

"We're going to the watch."
