Crashing down

With great power comes great responsibility. - the Amazing Spiderman

The night was long and full of nightmares for Elena. Eventually she just gave up on sleeping, she knew she'd have another nightmare if she tried and she wasn't ready for that. She was mentally exhausted already, let alone if she endured yet another of those horrible dreams.

The one she had before was utterly terrifying. She was walking through the forest alone when she heard Eddard screaming. Her heart skipped a few beats as she yelled his name and ran through the forest, not knowing where she had to go.

The scream suddenly changed, instead it was Catelyn's voice. It went on for a while, she was begging Robb to flee. After that Elena heard an unfamiliar feminine voice which soon turned into Gillian's.

The ground became soft and her footsteps slow and exhausting. Nevertheless Elena didn't give up, she kept on yelling Gillian's name in desparation. His agonizing screams still filled the cold air. When Elena finally arrived she saw him lying there on the cold hard ground. His screams had stopped, his body was unmoving.

"Gillian?!" Elena couldn't see his face, but the moment she saw his dark brown hair she knew it was him. She sprinted towards him, fear filling her body as she turned his body so she could see his face. What she saw next made tears spring up in her eyes, sorrow and complete desperation fill every fibre of her body.

The last thing Elena saw before she woke up were Robb's lifeless eyes staring up at her.

~

"Then you-"

"Yes, yes. Light a fire so you can see it. We know it already, you've repeated it over a hundred times." Gillian rolled his eyes. It was night, they were ready to finally attack Dreadfort.

"Make sure you do it then, Karstark." Robb glared at Gillian, both their eyes filling with hatred for each other.

"I'm ready to go." Elena mumbled, she'd had enough of them fighting. Robb nodded and turned to look at her. He tried to hold it back but he failed, he wrapped her tightly in his arms. He let out a deep sigh as he buried his face in the crook of her neck, breathing in the familiar scent of pine-trees.

Elena thought about telling him about the man from last night. If it really was The Dark One and he was here, they'd have an huge problem without a doubt. But Elena couldn't tell him, she knew she'd only worry him further.

"Please be careful." He whispered against her ear.

"I will." Elena untangled herself from his arms and smiled up at him. Then she looked at Arya, who was standing silently next to Robb. Arya wrapped her arms tightly around Elena but her face was clear of any emotion.

Too soon Ayra let go and only nodded at Elena, who sighed and turned towards Gillian. He was walking towards Arya and then kneeled before her while handing her a package.

"What's this?" she looked at Gillian. He had always been a good friend for her. He sometimes taught her how to fight and sometimes they made schemes together, mostly they involved Sansa and poo. One time Arya and Gillian put poo in Sansa's mattress, the maids had been searching for weeks from where the stench came. Needless to say, Gillian was the brother Arya always wanted and Arya was the little sister Gillian never had.

"Open it." Gillian smiled at her. Arya hesitantly opened the package. It was a dagger with a craving of a wolf on it. It was short but sharp, something Arya could use to her advantage. "I know it's not needle, but until you've found him back you can use this one." Gillian said and looked at Arya.

"How did you get it?" Arya practiced a bit with her new dagger, immediately liking it.

"It was my fathers gift to me." Gillian's smile vanished for a few seconds until his smile appeared again. "Don't try to kill your brother with it, I know how tempting it gets but... well, you don't want to be hanged."

"Thank you." Arya smiled for one of the first times since she'd came back.

"Let's walk first, I don't want you to become exhausted by carrying me all the way." Gillian offered to Elena. He turned towards the direction of Dreadfort and started walking. Elena nodded and walked beside him as they headed towards Dreadfort, leaving the Starks behind them.

"You nervous?" Gillian poked Elena in her waist, a smile creeping onto his face.

"You're not?" Elena sighed, the fear was actually filling her whole body by now.

"No, I'm just excited to kill Ramsay. To finally save te world from his filthiness." Gillian smiled.

"You just don't know fear, do you?" Elena looked up at her friend with a small smile.

"I do, I just don't let it show. Don't want you to freak out and freeze the whole country." Gillian looked down at her, he was a lot taller. Suddenly, to Elena's surprise, worry replaced the excitement on Gillian's face. "Should something happen to me, just remember, you're the one who can change everything. Don't ever give up, no matter how hard it gets."

"It's not that easy." Elena sighed and looked away. She remembered the dream she had and how hopeless she felt. In the end, she wasn't that powerful. The only thing she mastered was ice while the other Guardians, the legends everyone knew, mastered almost every power there is.

"Yes it is." Gillian almost shouted, then continued in a hushed voice. "Just... promise me you'll never give up."

"Gillian-"

"Please, Elena." He placed his hands on both her shoulders, forcing her to look at him.

"I promise."

"Good." Gillian sighed in relief. They reached the border of the forest, there was only plain field between where they stood and Dreadfort. "You ready?"

"Kind of." Elena muttered and took the belts they needed. She put them around her and Gillian, making sure she won't let him fall. She then wrapped her arms around his torso from behind.

"I don't think Robb would let me live if he sees us like this." Gillian chuckled.

"Shut up." Elena laughed silently, unwrapped her wings and flew off. The wind was cold, biting both their skins. It was hard for Gillian to hold in his excitement, he was enjoying this way too much. The wind flowing through his hair, the adrenaline filling him.

When they arrived, Elena silently landed on one of the castles's wall near a gate. A few guards stood there who the two immediately silenced. Gillian killed one by throwing a dagger, one of his skills, and Elena shot one with her arrows.

"How are we going to open that gate?" Elena whispered while holding her next arrow ready.

"Just follow me." Gillian whispered back, he knew how to break into castles. He mastered it when he was 5 years old. He would always escape from his normal live and go to the forest.

"There, turn that wheel." Gillian whispered after he had taken down another guard from behind. Elena started to push the enormous wheel, it was almost too heavy.

"I could use a hand here." She groaned, her muscles were already hurting with the effort. The gate slowly opened beneath them, creaking and moaning with every inch it moved.

"Halfway." Gillian groaned while pushing with all his might. Suddenly screams erupted from outside, men yelling commands and women shouting.

"Shit." Gillian cursed. "Go look what's happening."

"There's a fire." Elena said with wide eyes, the houses near the gate were on fire, the heat spreading. She frowned in confusion, thinking about what must have caused it. IT wasn't them, that's for sure and it couldn't be another of theirs. It had to be an accident yet it was too convenient to be happening now.

"Well, fuck. Now Robb thinks he needs to come." Gillian cursed again. "Just help me with this bloody gate."

Elena turned around towards Gillian. "They're almost here." her voice shook with fear, the gate was not high enough for Robb to ride through. If they had not opened the gate completely when Robb arrived, he will be trapped there what would mean that they'd most likely get shot by arrows in a few seconds. She sprinted towards the wheel and started helping Gillian.

"Hey!!" Several guards came walking towards the gate, all of them sprinting on the wall.

"We can't fight them off now." Gillian said through his clenched teeth.

"I've got an idea." Elena let go of the wheel again and raised her palm towards the door the guards will have to go through. Ice formed, closing the entrance to the chamber above the gate. "It won't hold long."

"Just bloody help me with this gate." Gillian ordered. He was already exhausted, how could he fight after this? The two could hear the guards' swords slamming against the ice, several cracks forming with each collision. The sound of hoofs on the ground became louder and louder meaning Robb was getting near.

"Keep pushing!" Gillian yelled. The alarm of Dreadfort went off, waking every guard and soldier in it.

"We have to retreat!" Elena yelled over the noise of the army coming closer and closer and the sound of the spreading fire on the other side.

"No way!!" Gillian pushed with all he had left. Finally the gate was raised, Elena froze the whole wheel so they couldn't close it anytime soon when the guards smashed through the ice.

"Hello." Gillian waved and smiled at them before he quickly attacked.

Elena immediately shot one in the chest with her arrows, another one she hit right in his eye. Gillian used his daggers, he always hated using long swords as he preferred the small ones. He was fast, even Elena couldn't keep track of his movements.

"We have to get down." Gillian said when all of the guards were dead. He walked out off the chamber. Walking over the wall he saw Robb dashing through the gate on his horse with Grey Wind by his side. Several guards were already there but they were no match for the wolf and the Stark.

"The king in the North!" Robb's men shouted as they drove through Dreadfort, killing every guard that stood in their way.

"We have to get to the courtyard!" Elena yelled over the noise. She had to stay close to Robb, her main priority right now was to protect him. She had already failed to protect the other Starks, she wasn't ready to do that again.

"You go ahead, I will deal with these fuckers." Gillian smiled when more Boltons came running over the wall.

"Be careful!" Elena yelled while unwrapping her wings.

"Don't worry about me, you have to save your little princess." Gillian sliced a neck open while smiling at Elena. Only she could see that he was actually hating every moment of the battle, he hated it to kill people. The best way for him to cope with it was to act as if he enjoyed it. It was something he did quite often, actually.

Elena flew off the wall and followed the North men, the heat of the spreading fire touching her wings. She shot around 7 men with her arrows while she killed another 14 with ice. She saw Robb in the middle of the courtyard, blood already covering his face and sword. There was sweat beading down his face from the fire.

One of the Bolton' guards slowly walked towards Robb's back and raised his sword. Elena kicked him while landing right behind Robb, her wings filling half the courtyard and clouding others visions.

"You okay?" Robb yelled while his eyes were trained on his next target.

"We have to go, this whole place is burning down." Elena replied while slicing someone's belly open. She looked at the wall and saw Gillian running down the stairs towards them, killing every enemy that was in his way.

Robb didn't reply, he just kept on fighting. All the anger and grieve of his wife came pouring out. He didn't even hear Elena begging him to retreat and get the army out of the burning castle. Elena got desperate, there were women and children running through the battle to get away from the fire. A lot were already hurt, mothers were on the ground begging their children to flee.

Then Elena saw a building crashing down on the other side of the courtyard, several planks falling onto a child who had lost its mother. The child was screaming and trying to lift the plank off of him, nevertheless the burning wood didn't budge. Elena did not know what to do, she wanted to help the child who was now trapped beneath the plank but she also had to defend Robb, who was already getting tired and weary. Besides that she knew he wasn't in his right mind.

Then she saw Gillian who ran towards the child and was tilting the plank up so the child could get from underneath it. Elena sighed in relief. But then she saw one of Bolton's men charging towards Gillian from behind him.

"Gillian!!" Elena yelled his name whilst still protecting Robb, she couldn't go there to help Gillian. Fear ran through Elena's body, Gillian was still holding the plank because the child had not gone from underneath it.

"Gillian!!!" Elena yelled even harder and now ran towards him. The child was free and stood up, Gillian could finally put the plank down and he turned around to face his enemy. He was too late. The blade pierced Gillian's chest in a second. First he just stood there, frozen. His mouth was wide open in shock and pain, his eyes wide open in surprise and fear. He blinked a few times in confusion and then glanced down at the sword.

"Gillian!!!" Elena yelled, tears filling her eyes while utter desperation filled her whole body, it felt like her whole world was falling apart as she saw the man pulling his sword out of Gillian's body. He fell to his knees with blood pouring out off his chest rapidly.

Elena shot several arrows at the man, now there were more than ten holes in his body, blood spilling everywhere as also he fell onto the ground, only he was dead immediately.

"Gillian?" Elena sobbed and kneeled beside him. His dark brown eyes stared up at her, just a spark of life still in them.

"No, please no." Elena cried, forgetting the battle that was happening around her as she cuddled Gillian against her chest, holding onto him like her life was depending on it. Elena knew what she had to do. She began to heal his wounds.

"No, Elena." Gillian protested, barely breathing. His eyes were getting heavy and blood covered his lips. "Not now, not for me." He knew that Elena couldn't handle to use the amount of power she'd have to use to heal him. She would die healing him, he couldn't let that happen. "Not ever again."

"Gillian please." Elena didn't stop, her hands were glowing with her power, the wind was getting stronger and stronger around them, making the fire even bigger. But Gillian's wounds didn't heal.

"Elena!!" Robb yelled her name from the other side of the courtyard. He had noticed the wind getting stronger, he had felt the feeling of power in the air. He had felt that some time before, the time when Elena almost died healing his little brother. He would never again forget that feeling. Then he noticed Elena's absence.

"Please, Gillian. Stay awake, don't you dare die on me now." Elena sobbed. She could feel the power oozing out of her and tears streaming down her face.

"Elena." Gillian coughed, blood now also pouring from his mouth. He tried to lift his arm and catch the tears from Elena's face but he failed.

"Elena!! stop!!" Robb had seen Elena and he knew she couldn't possibly heal Gillian. Robb also knew that they couldn't stay here, the wind had spread the fire which was now too big to survive much longer. The fact that Elena's life was in danger had woken him from his trance, somehow made him see what was really going on. He forgot about his grief and misery and focused only on her.

"Don't..." Gillian's eyes were closing, his body shaking with the effort it took to say his last words. He wanted to tell Elena so many things, the secrets he kept from her, he wanted to tell her he loved her al along but that he was too afraid to tell her, he wanted to say that she was his everything.

He didn't though because he knew it would break Elena, he knew that she would feel guilty because she had no idea all along. So he just said his last words, avoiding the things he wanted to truly say to her.

"Don't give up." Gillian mustered out. He smiled at Elena for one last time before he breathed out his last breath and closed his eyes.

"Gillian?" Elena sobbed and shook his body. "Gillian? Wake up." Her power went out, she had used too many. Her whole body felt empty.

"Elena!! We have to leave!" Robb ran towards her but she didn't hear his calls.

"Please Gillian, wake up." Elena cried while resting her palm against his cheek. She tilted him up, holding him against her. She didn't notice that his clothes were on fire, she didn't notice the fire licking her skin. She only felt emptiness.

"Elena!" Robb pulled her up, his hands under her shoulders. Then he saw Gillian on the ground. He always thought that he would have been happy when Gillian died but now he felt the remorse filling his body.

"We have to go." He said, lifting Elena up in his arms because he could feel her body falling to the ground.

"No! Put me down!!" Elena yelled and banged her fists against Robb when he started to walk away from Gillian' body. "Stop!!" she cried, her whole body shaking. "We can't leave him there." Elena sobbed silently, taking one last glance at Gillian' lifeless body as Robb scooped her up in his arms. "We have to take him with us." She cried silently and buried her face in Robb's chest, now giving up fighting the cries that she had kept down.

"I'm sorry." Robb whispered as he ran through the gate of Dreadfort. When he looked around he saw his soldiers safe on the field, most of them alive and well. He heard the screams off the men in Dreadfort. Robb looked through the gate one last time with Elena in his arms, his eyes filling with tears when he saw Gillian lying there, his body catching fire.

"I have to save him." Elena sobbed and clutched onto Robb's armor.

He took one last glance. Then he saw a man standing there, leaning against one of the houses that was burning, the flames were not burning his skin, leaving the white flesh unharmed. The man smiled at Robb, his dark eyes actually filling with joy when he saw The King in the North holding his sobbing guardian in his arms.

"I told her that she wouldn't win." Robb heard a man' voice in his head while he was still looking at the black haired man until the flames hid him from sight.

"Now look what happened."
