Battle of life and death - part 5: the ghosts in our hearts

"All that is gold does not glitter." Elena whimpered as she buried her head in her arms which were resting on her knees. The explosions seemed to get closer and closer, followed by anguished screams and rumbles. "Not all-" She looked up when a building right next to her fell due to the earthquakes.

She knew she had almost no time left to think of something, anything at all that would safe her children. Ethan's spell was complicated and she'd never heard of anything like it before. To create such an illusion, so powerful that it could trap 2 human beings was already complicated to cast, let alone to get rid of it.

Table, shiny gold, hole in the wall. Elena recited the things in her head that Gillian had said. They always had only one table in their house and the hole in the wall was where she would hide every time Ethan and she played hide and seek. They didn't have much but as a family they were happy enough together.

Shiny gold. Elena's eyes narrowed a bit. She could barely remember anything, but one thing she did remember was Damon selling false gold, made out of steel and paint. That was mostly how they got by until one time he got caught, which ultimately lead to their mother's death. "All that is gold does not glitter." Elena immediately stood up as realisation hit her. "Gillian, are you there?!"

"Mother?" His tiny voice popped up from right beside her.

"Can you get the gold?" Elena looked behind her to see if the explosions were already close enough. She didn't hear them anymore, which meant that it was over and that it hadn't reached them somehow. There were still earthquakes though and numerous buildings falling apart. "Hurry!"

"I got it." His little voice trembled.

"Good, good." Elena started to pace, her head aching due to the thinking. "Is there anything special about it, something that's not normal?"

"There... There's something written on it." Gillian answered. There was a silence, he was probably trying to read, something he still found hard. He was 4 years after all. "It says: the daughter of darkness."

"Daughter of darkness?" Elena mumbled but she was suddenly thrown back on the street, her back colliding with some of the debris that was lying there. She got up immediately, seeing how her former house suddenly build up again, the glass shatters flying towards the house, forming back into windows and the door jumping back in its hinges.

"Gillian, Lyanna?!" She tried to open the door but it wouldn't budge. "Bloody hell." Elena cursed and tried to throw in a window but all it did was send the rock she had used straight back to her.

"Did you call for me?"

Elena turned around swiftly, seeing his light blue figure right in front of her. She had recognized his voice even before he said the second word, not only because of the musky sound of it but also due to the way he spoke, how he pronounced every word clearly and with care.

"Gillian?" She stuttered. There were so many memories that came with seeing him. Not only those where he was the other Gillian that Abigail had resurrected, but also those in Winterfell where they would just talk for hours in the Godswood. The familiar feeling she always felt when she was with him, the feeling of home, the feeling of warmth and comfort crashed down on her.

He smiled warmly while holding up the key he had obtained from Ethan. "I think I have something you need."

Robb Stark stood in the midst of the battle which was now taking place on one of the main roads that lead straight to the Red Keep. Somehow Liane still hadn't managed to blow up the two main gates, leaving Robb and his army stuck in the streets. Jon, Abigail and Louis had joined them after hearing the explosions which had blocked the gates which they were supposed to be defending.

"Robb!" Jon yelled at him while trying to shield himself from the debris that was flying everywhere because of Ethan and Damon's fighting. "We need to get out of here! We're being overrun!"

Robb desperately looked around himself, seeing that the Lannisters were coming from all the streets around them, blocking every exit. If he didn't think of anything soon they were going to be massacred right there and then.

"Son." He felt a slight weight on his shoulder which made him turn around immediately. When he came eye to eye with his farther, so close that he could make out the wrinkles on his face his breath got stuck in his throat. "You need to make your way to the gate."

Robb looked at the gate he was talking about, noticing the archers that were positioned on the walls connected to it. "But we'll be shot down in a matter of seconds, we have no way off breaking through that gate."

"If we stay here we're going to get killed too, there we might have a chance." Ned Stark continued while killing another soldier that was going to try to kill his son. "You have a man on the inside of the castle, right?"

"Yes..." Robb muttered. Maybe Liane had been killed, maybe there was no hope left of them getting into the castle or even winning the battle. Even though Damon had supressed most of the explosions, there still had been lots of casualties. Above all their whole plan had fallen into pieces when Damon had failed to keep Ethan inside the castle.

"Then we have a bigger chance there." Eddard said. "Now, you're the king, you don't have to listen to your old man. After all, you've come further than I ever have and are possibly much better at giving commands than me. All I can do is give you advices. It's your decision, Robb."

"But father," Robb stuttered while looking at him. "I may never be as good a leader as you a-... were, I-"

"Don't be like me." Eddard quickly interrupted with a stern look. "Be like yourself."

Robb stood there dumbfounded for a while while staring at his father with big eyes. He had nearly forgotten all about the fighting around him. "I am proud of you, son." Eddard smiled while patting Robb on the shoulder. "And I'm sorry I left when I did, I'm sorry for burdening you with my troubles."

Robb didn't know what to say, all he could so is smile slightly while tears welled up in his eyes. "Now, give your command, son. We have a war to fight."

"Jon!" Robb looked at his brother a few feet away. "Get everyone to the gates!" He then turned towards Louis as all the others fought their way towards the gates. "Louis! See if you can't find another entrance to the Red Keep."

"Aye, your majesty." Louis smiled and then suddenly disappeared with a flash.

"Good." Robb sighed as he blocked an attack that was directed right at his head. He deflected the blow and with the momentum gained he kicked his attacker and send him to the ground. He looked at the top off the gate, thinking of Elena and his children. He knew that if he was going to die it would be there, on the bottom of that gate with his whole army around him. At least his father and brother were there but his wife was still lost to him.

That until he saw her pale blue wings appear from behind the towers, her pearly white hair waving behind her as she gracefully landed on the walls, shooting all the archers with her bow as she created a slide of ice to make her landing go more smoothly. When she finally came to a halt she had already killed all of the archers there and looked down at the other side of the gate, probably wondering how to open it.

Robb saw her relax her shoulders and wave until she turned towards his side of the gate and saw him standing there. When their eyes locked the world seemed to pause for a while. The familiar feeling washed down over them both, mostly relief due to seeing each other alive and well.

When Robb reached the gate with what was left of his army, around 200 men and more than 300 ghosts, the door exploded into shatters and splinters of wood. When the smoke cleared a smirking Liane appeared from behind the curtain with a dumbfounded Sam looking at the remains of the gate. Not only that, there were multiple bodies lying on the floor covering in blood with a tired and ill looking Jaime kneeling down to catch his breath, one of his hands glasped around his chest where his wound was still bleeding.

"That went well." Liane smiled while dropping a torch and a candle.

"I Have literally no clue what in the seven hells just happened." Sam mumbled quietly, looking at the remains of the gate while trying to wipe the blood off of his face. When he noticed that Robb was entering with his army he quickly scattered away to the side.

"Find a way to block that gate!" He yelled as he ran to the centre of the tiny courtyard.

"I got that covered." Elena landed right in front of him. When the remains of the army had entered, she created a wall of ice which was more than 3 feet thick. "That'll hold them back for a while." She let out a deep breath and turned towards Robb.

She didn't have time to register what happened until she was already enveloped in his warmth. "Are you all right? Are you hurt?" Robb ranted and then suddenly kept her at arm-length. "Did you find the children, are they alive? Are they safe?!"

"They're alive and well." Elena soothed him by laying her hand on his cheek. "Gillian and I got them out, took them back to the camp."

"Thank the gods." Robb let out a deep breathe in relief, letting go off his wife as he scanned the area around him.

"So what now, king in the north?" Jaime seemed to try and mock him while stumbling over to them. All Robb did was glance back at Elena for a moment, probably trying to gain her permission to kill Jaime, which he wasn't granted.

"We will have to take control off the throne room and with that, the city." Robb said. "But to stop the battle we will have to defeat Ethan." He looked back at Elena.

"Abigail?" She in turn turned towards the black haired guardian. "Do you have the dagger?"

"It's safe and sound, right here." Her eyes were still glowing light blue only was it somewhat fainter than before.

"Good. Then we have a guardian to kill."

"I didn't think this was going to be a family reunion!" Ethan yelled as he walked through the rubble towards a half-dying Damon. Even with his new found powers Ethan was still stronger than Damon, especially now that he was angrier than ever before.

"Although, I must say, it kind of suits the general mood of our relationship." Ethan stopped a few feet before Damon who slowly stood up. "Isn't that right, Elena?!" He turned around towards where he heard her soft footsteps.

"Smoke, rubble, broken pieces that will never fit together again." Ethan continued as he walked towards his sister. "People try so hard to fix what they had that they seem to forget everything they have already, seem to forget that some things just can't be fixed."

"Maybe they don't need to be fixed." Elena said as she also started to walk towards him. "Maybe all that needs to happen is for it all to be cleaned up and thrown away."

She took a moment to examine her brother. If she was to be honest, she would say he looked like death. His back was slightly bowed, his head seemingly hanging from his torso, big black circles that hanged under his eyes and above all the way his wings dragged behind him like he was too busy to lift them.

"And you, who have failed again and again to defeat me, will try again?" Ethan laughed hysterically as he doubled over. "You cannot reach him!" He yelled. "Your brother is gone, perished by the darkness like every memory he ever had."

"Then there'll be nothing holding us back from destroying you." Abigail appeared on his left, her wings unwrapped behind her back.

"Like you said," Steven appeared on his right, making Ethan turn around in circles to keep a careful eye on everyone. "Some things just can't be fixed. -" Jon and Sam walked into his sight, ghost trailing behind his owner. Then the last one appeared right after his wolf came into view. He held Ethan's stare as he glared dangerously. "-But they can be destroyed."

Ethan chuckled as he turned around to look at everyone. Damon had lifted himself from the ground, seeming ready to attack again.

"Now this is just wonderful." Ethan put his hands on his hip. "All of you, here, together." He smiled when he focused his eyes on Elena. When suddenly black smoke started to surround everyone, Elena tried to stop Ethan from casting the same spell as he did on her and Ella before by throwing a knife at his chest.

Ethan smiled, knowing she was too late. "Just in time for desert."
