Battle of life and death -part 1: preparations

"Do you remember the prophecy?" Elena looked at King's Landing. The nerves were wrecking her body, her hands shaking without stopping.

"The one about Ella, you mean?" Robb looked at her. He was standing next to her, wholly dressed in his armor just like she was. Only hers was very different. Instead of big plates she was covered with small steel black feathers all over her chest. On her arms were somewhat bigger plates of armor but they were also shaped like strong feathers just like the ones covering her legs. She looked like a steel bird, only was she even more terrifying than a dragon and a lion combined.

"A child with the kindest of hearts born out of the purest of bloods shall face the darkness. For all we know that was Ella but since she is dead now I don't think it matters anymore." Robb said.

"I meant the other one." Elena looked at him who was standing at her side. The black war paint that covered the area around her eyes made her green eyes pop out even more. Her white hair was bound into a long braid that hung over her shoulder, a few strands of hair hanging before her face.

"All that is gold does not glitter,
not all who wander are lost,
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring,
Renewed shall be the blade that was once broken,The crownless again shall be king.

Assuming that the blade they speak about is this one and the shadow is Ethan," Elena sighed and looked down at the blade that was in her hands. She could still remember what was written on the hilt: From light comes darkness and from darkness light. "Maybe we might stand a chance if the prophecy comes true. Maybe someone will find a way to reach deep into Ethan and bring him back but not me. As it says, deep roots are not reached by the frost."

Robb watched as ice was covering Elena's hands and parts of her armor that was in contact with her skin. That usually happened when she was afraid. He looked back up at her eyes, feeling the worry she was feeling.

"I am the frost, Robb. I am the guardian of the North. My powers are now at its strongest since winter is here." Elena twisted the dagger around in her hand. "Still I can't have the blade nor can I defeat Ethan."

"We can't let our plans depend on some prophecy that might not even be true." Robb took her hand in his and also looked at the city before him. In an hour they were going to attack the city, it was already night. They had but 9 hours till dawn.

"All prophecy's come true for as far as I know it. The one you were talking about is vague. It could be talking about anyone still. But this one, it's different. It resembles so much from now." Elena bit on her lip as she tried to make out the highest tower of the palace where her children most likely were being held. "Maybe it's because I just need some hope."

"We'll save them, Elena. We will bring Gillian and Lyanna back home."

"At what cost?" Elena turned towards Robb, sighing deeply as she laid the palm of her hand against his cheek. "The odds are against us, like Damon said. That's why he and I made a different plan."

"Elena." Robb spoke in a warning tone like he always did. Yet she continued.

"Ethan probably knows that I will lead the attack and be the one to carry the dagger with me. That's why I can't be the one with it. We have to let the person carry it who Ethan expects that would never be the one having it." Elena handed it over to Robb. "Give it to Abigail."

"Abigail?" Robb frowned. "I'm not even sure if she's truly on our side. Don't you remember how she almost killed Ella for Ethan?!"

"That's exactly why she needs to be the one. Currently she shares the strongest bond with Ethan." Elena tried to reason with him but he scoffed and turned away. "You saw how he reacted when she came, you saw how he hesitated! He hasn't show any of that kind of emotion towards Damon or me!"

"Than what will you do?" Robb turned back towards her. "What is this plan that you and Damon just came up with without filling me in?"

"He and I, together with Liane and Sam will find a way into the city from the back while you lead the assault on the front. Damon and Liane will then find a way to distract Ethan while Sam and I find our way in the keep. That way we may have a chance in finding our children before Ethan even knows what's going on." Elena explained.

"And how do you plan to just enter the city? Surely flying won't be an option." Robb said, meaning the multiple archers that would shoot them down without doubt within seconds if they even tried.

"Jaime." Elena tried to read his expression. She wasn't sure how Robb would react. "He will open one of the gates. He has already agreed, after what Cersei did to the sept even he knows that she is wrong."

Robb sighed, running his hand through his hair anxiously. "You know how dangerous that is? Do you even know if Jaime is on your side?" He asked and watched how Elena nodded in response. He scoffed and then chuckled, pacing right in front of her. "To be honest, I didn't expect anything else from you."

"It may be our only chance at saving our children." Elena took his hand in hers and watched how their fingers intertwined.

"I know." Robb sighed and pulled her closer, enveloping her in his arms and resting his head on hers. "If I die on the battlefield, tell them I love them."

"I will." Elena slightly pulled back from their embrace so she could look at him. "If you do the same for me, that is."

Robb nodded and smiled sadly, scanning her face like it was the last time he would be seeing her. "I just hope that Abigail's spell will work."

"I do too." Elena stood on her toes so she could reach his lips and kissed him, feeling the warmth spreading through her body like always. She then pulled back again, leaning her forehead against his. "I love you."

"I love you." Robb whispered. He couldn't watch how she left so he kept his eyes closed. He did hear her wings rustle though. Sometime later he also heard footsteps and saw how Damon and Steven came walking towards him.

Steven had his silver armor on while Damon was all black.

"Aidan would've been proud of us." Steven told Damon, knowing that he was like a farther to both of them.

"The old man would've probably scolded us for taking such risks." Damon countered. "Especially you, who has so many children and a loving wife." He stopped Steven in his tracks by holding his shoulder. "You don't have to do this, Steven. Get your kids and go home. There's an huge chance we won't make it out alive."

"That's exactly why I need to go." Steven said. "You know me. I can't let anybody fight battles that are also mine to fight. Besides, without me, you're utterly helpless." He chuckled and looked how Damon scoffed but then smiled. "I've talked with them, Damon. They understand."

"They're just kids." Damon bit on his lip while looking at his friend. Steven nodded, patting Damon on the shoulder. "Castiel is older than you think." Steven seemed to be in deep thought as he examined Damon.

"You've changed." Steve smiled sadly. "I can actually bear to be in your presence longer than a minute."

"Likewise, captain." Damon laughed, Steven joining him.

"Seriously though. I'm proud of us, Damon." Steven smiled while holding his shoulder.

Damon smiled, turning towards Robb again who was a few feet away. "Don't get all sentimental on me, Steve, there's a chance you might see me cry." Damon tried to sound mocking but even though Steven couldn't see it, he knew there were tears forming in his eyes and that that was the reason why he turned away from him. Damon always found it difficult to show his emotions.

"I see that Elena has already informed you of our plans?" Damon asked when he arrived. Robb nodded in response. "Good." Damon took in a deep breath and walked further towards Robb. "Then this is probably the last time we see each other." He smiled while patting Robb on the shoulder.

"Take care of Elena, will you?" Robb asked him.

"You can be sure I will, like I'm sure you'll watch out for my daughter when she summons the dead." Damon seemed slightly afraid of that.

"I will." Robb nodded and also laid his hand on Damon's shoulder. "I never thought I'd say this to you, Damon, but thank you. For everything."

"Sure thing." Damon winked and turned around, unwrapping his great wings from behind his back. "Don't die out there, little princess. The world may need you still."

Robb chuckled as he watched how Damon flew away. "As they may need you."

"Your Grace?" Steven walked towards him after watching his friend leave, which hurt more than he had expected. "Are you ready?"

Robb shook his head. "Just one last thing." He said as he looked at Steven. "Be sure to write down that if I die and so does Elena, I want Jon to succeed me as King in the North and do so legitimize him as a Stark from this moment forth till the end of time. For he is my true brother, and will always be."

"That's... Sudden." Steven frowned.

"It's been on my mind for a while now." Robb turned back to look at his army which was already positioning itself. The trebuchets were up and ready, now only waiting for the command. "Needless to say, it's now or never."

They remained silent for a while as they both looked at the event that was enveloping itself in front of them. "Are you afraid?" Robb asked after a while.

"I surely am." Steven confirmed.

"Good." Robb sighed. "We'll need fear if we want to survive this."

"Are you ready then?" Steven looked at him.

"As ready as I'll ever be."

~

"And?" Elena whispered when Liane ran towards them and hid in the bushes with the rest. They were hiding near the south of the city. They could hear the trebuchets and the crumbling of the walls from far away. It would take around 3 more hours till the army even had a chance of breaching the keep like this.

"Ethan has conjured a magic barrier, as expected." Liane tried to catch his breath. "So no transforming into dragons or any of that kind of thing nor flying inside the city."

"Which means we'll have to use the backdoor." Damon sighed, looking through the leaves to try and spot some guards.

"Right." Liane took in a deep breath. "The gutter it is. I've prepared a bomb to destroy the entrance. Are you sure Jaime will see us at the end of the tunnel?"

"Not really, but it's our only chance." Elena fastened her bow on her back while putting Gillian's dagger in its sheath on her waist. She stood up slightly, her back still bowed as they made their way towards the end of the bushes. "Liane?" She looked behind herself to see that the rest had followed her.

"There's one guard there that'll definitely spot us when we run towards the wall." Liane said as he peered through his self-made spyglass.

"You're up, Elena." Damon stated and watched how his sister tried to be as silent as possible as she took her bow from behind her back. She took one of her silver arrows and nocked it.

"It's pretty dark." Elena bit on her lip as she drew, trying to see where she was aiming. If she was going to shoot the guard she needed to be sure that he was dead in a second or else he'd scream and alert the others.

"Will you make it?" Sam crawled towards the spot next to her, also trying to spot the guard. Through the mist even he couldn't see the man.

"Of course I will." Elena smiled, narrowing her eyes and then letting the arrow go. They all watched the arrow fly and soon after they all heard a grunt and a loud thump as his body fell over the wall. "Nailed it." Elena smiled and immediately got up and emerged from the bushes, running towards the cover of the wall.

The rest followed, walking right next to the wall and towards the sea where there was a sewer that ended in the salty water. "Liane?" Elena strapped her bow on her back again. "Now might be a good time to blow things up."

He seemed to tinker with something for a few seconds while he was walking through the water. He then sticked the small bomb on the steel fence with some gooey substance he made earlier.

"Are you sure it won't make too much noise?" Sam asked while he was already hiding behind some of the stones near the rock wall. He was already soaking wet from the sea water, shivering in the night's cold weather.

"Who do you think I am?" Liane smiled when he succeeded in strapping the bomb to the fence. He then lit the end of the robe and sprinted away, jumping behind one of the rocks just in time for the explosion. Like he had predicted it sounded muffled. "See?" He wiped some of the dust from his face. "I'm a genius, like always."

Elena rolled her eyes but smiled slightly, jumping in the water and into the tunnel. To say it smelt bad would be an understatement. It was the only way to sneak into the Red Keep now though, so for Elena it didn't matter as long as she'd be able to save her children in the end.

When they reached the end of the tunnel there was a large wooden door. They all stopped except for Elena who walked towards it and tried to open it. "It's locked." She frowned when the door refused to open. "Jaime should've opened it by now."

"Can't you, I don't know, blow it open or something?" Sam sighed. He was done with all of it, especially the wading through a sewer.

"It's a four inches thick door made out of cold rolled steel." Damon glared at Sam. "Of course we can't just 'blow' it open. We're guardians, not gods."

"Maybe Jaime ran into some kind of trouble?" Liane said while doing his best to keep the rest of his bombs above the water.

"Or he just decided to let us die here. Which will surely happen if we have to stay in this stench for a little while longer."

"He won't do that." Elena whispered. She knocked on the door for the thousandths time. "Jaime!"

She immediately stepped back when they heard loud thuds from the other side, including some painful sounding cracks which were most likely bones being broken. Suddenly the door opened with a swing, revealing a blood covered Jaime.

"Elena Snow, what a coincidence." He sounded relieved as he leaned against the door nonchalantly. He eyed the group for a few moments, especially Liane who looked like an idiot with his bombs and Damon who looked like he was trying to kill him with his glare. "Good evening, gentlemen."

"It's good to see you, Jaime." Elena gave him a quick hug and then walked by him, looking through the corridors before her. There were around 10 Lannisters guards that were now either unconscious or just dead, Jaime's doing. That was all the proof that Elena needed to know that Jaime was truly on their side.

"Damon." Jaime nodded at him when he passed.

Damon couldn't hold it back any longer, grasping Jaime by his collar and holding him up. "If you try anything, anything at all to hurt my sister I will rip your bloody slick spine out."

Jaime laughed, patting Damon's hand that was holding him. "Just like your brother."

Damon slowly put him down again, Jaime wiping of his armor off as he tried to regain his composure. "Right." Jaime put his smile back on, turning towards the rest of the group.

"Let's go."

~

"Your Grace, the walls have been breached." One of Robb's men said, looking up at Robb who was already mounted on his horse. His whole army was already standing behind him, all horsed and ready. It had taken near 6 hours till the gate grumbled, now the moon was high in the sky but there was still no sign of Ethan.

"Good." Robb looked towards Abigail who was right beside him, nodding at her. "You're up."

"Okeydokey." She took in a deep breath and walked towards the city in her own. When she was in the middle of the large stretch of plain field she lifted her head towards the sky and opened her arms wide, black smoke immediately rising up all around her as she lifted from the ground. The wind started to pick up as the sky roared above her. Robb squinted his eyes but he couldn't see her anymore, all he could see was a black thick smoke stretching on for as far as he could see.

It was like great black tentacles emerged from the ground, sweeping all around Abigail. The ground then started to grumble, cracks forming over the whole field like the earth was cracking. Through the cracks shone a dark red eerie glow, making it seem like hell was opening up beneath Abigail who was already ten feet above the ground. When her eyes opened they were suddenly red like the glow that came from underground. What happened next nobody had ever expected: from the cracks in the ground came light blue transparent figures, crawling their way out of the ground.

"She's summoning the ghosts." Steven said as he wondered at the sight before him. Robb nodded, his mouth hanging agape.

Soon enough there was a whole army of ghosts that stretched on for as far as the eye could see around Abigail as she landed back on the ground. Her eyes were glowing light blue just like the ghosts as she looked around her. She knew that there were ghosts of her loved ones between them. She could see Ella, Aidan, Santana and all the rest walking towards her with weapons in their hands.

"Louis?" Abigail gasped when he stood in front of her. She tried to reach out for him but her hand went right through his. She tried to keep her tears at bay when he smiled at her in acknowledgment. "I'm sorry that I had to summon you, but we need your help." Abigail said as she turned around to look at all of them.

She then faced Gillian. "Then let's get it started." He smiled.
