Chapter 5 (Ren)
Ren looked over at the metal steel-like painted concrete walls, its silver sheen against the grey coloring of the stone. The almost idyllic paintings and photos hang perfectly still against the futuristic industrial-grade wall. Two guards stood opposite in front of the iron electronic door. Stopping in front of the two guards dressed in their grey colors, Ren rolled her eyes as they both eyed her. Nothing too leering, more like a sweep to see if she was carrying anything. Ren would have thought given where they were, and who they were, they would have expected the gun strapped to her left thigh. But from the narrowing of their eyes, they still weren't too happy about it.
Crossing her arms she waited for one of them to ask," State your business." The man to her left said, his grey paperboy hat shifted to the left of his brown hair. Ren only cocked a brow as she surveyed their attire. They both held rifles but aside from that, their uniforms were too sleek and smooth to be carrying anything.
"Didn't you hear him? State your busi-" Before the man to her right could say anything, his hat tilted to his right, Ren sighed rolling her eyes. It was as if they had tailored their hat's positions to match their posts by the door. But before Ren could answer the door opened, sliding into the walls.
"Ah, Ren. You're finally here." The man said. Alexander. His nearly black hair and dapper blue eyes were sure one looker for any girl. Ren rolled her eyes once more looking over his shoulder to get a peek at his office. Of course, her eyes only shifted the bare minimum, no one would even know she was looking over Alexander's shoulders. She'd mastered the skill after her mother nearly beat her to death. She spent a week trying to master the skill, each time she didn't succeed in surveying the whole landscape scrap for scrap her mother would beat her. Or more like her mother would order her men to strap her to a chair and electrocute her until she fainted. Ren supposed the one good thing about it was that she was ten at the time that specific training occurred.
Facing back at the man who had given her that card, Ren cocked a brow. Without having to ask the man, Alexander invited her in. "Please, make yourself at home. Gentleman." Alexander nodded back at the guards stationed by his door. No matter how strong you were, it was always good to have back up or so Ren supposed. Her mother always did too, she had a whole bunch of them, her little knights. They were always the ones to carry out her orders, her punishment, her wishes.
Walking into the pristine blue and grey room she eyed the dark sapphire-colored curtains. The plain grey carpet and the white lines that made the small futuristic decor on the thing. Taking a seat in the plush blue fabric chair in front of the metal grey table, a sleek computer stood in the corner so as to not block Alexander's view of Ren as he sat in his own slightly bigger chair behind the desk.
"I'm glad to inform you that you've passed," Alexander said that smile still plastered on his face, it really was irking Ren.
"Let's not dance around the subject. You brought me here for a reason. You found me and gave me that card for a purpose. What do you want?" Ren asked, cocking her head to the side. She knew how this world worked. How there was always a give and take. No one just gave a gift out of the kindness in their hearts, no, not in this world. Ren hated when people in this world just hopped around the topic when both parties knew what needed to be said.
Alexander smiled wider his lips pressed thin, as Ren remained neutral her face placid as she stared back at the head of the Infromants division of "The Grey". He was quite the looker, Ren noted, no doubt he used it to his advantage. She'd heard the rumors around him, the biggest most eligible bachelor, a giving investor. And all his investments have always hit it big in the market. Apple, Microsoft, all tech companies. Some were minor startups like Bitcoin and maybe an entertainment industry here and there.
But Ren wasn't attracted to his looks, in fact, she was wondering exactly nothing. Nothing except for what she had to do to be free. Or as free as a person with her sets of skills can. After all, where else would she work that would put her assassin skills to work without actually killing people?
"You are a very wise girl, Ren. Your mother-" He began only to receive a sharp girl from Ren, the first emotions she'd shown throughout this whole meeting.
"She's not my mother. Just the women who raised me," Ren stated. Her eyes narrowed against Alexander's as he cleared his throat still smiling his lips pressed together. Not constipated, not forcing, no it was more like he was putting on a show. Ren hated shows.
"She" would always put them on when Ren "behaved". When Ren "listened". It was a reward, Ren hated it. It meant she did something that pleased "her". She didn't always hate shows of course but, not after that day. Ren cleared her mind focusing on the present, trying to forget the day she received the most torturous of all "punishments". The lashings, the bone fractures, the constant shocks against her brain, the monitoring.
One didn't need to look far to know how many times Ren had tried to make it all end. The slash across her neck, her wrists, her ankles, her stomach. Her so-called mother had taught her all the points to kill a man after all.
Ren started when she was 12, she wanted it all to end. That was until she met- no Ren took in a deep breath as she rolled her eyes at Alexander's words," Right, well, then I won't. I know my sister is planning something. Something big. I need you to find out what it is. Of course, this is an unauthorized mission. I'll need you to keep this a secret. My siblings, let's just say we don't always see eye to eye. I have a feeling that they might be working with one another, but I need to be sure about what it is and if it is true that they are colluding with one another on this." Sighing Ren crossed her arms, sinking back against the soft blue cushions of the chair. "And what's in it for me?"
Alexander smiled his teeth finally showing the shark beneath his skin. "Well, you have your freedom from your moth- I mean from 'her', yes? But if you manage to help me stop my sister if she is planning something then, I'll give you this."
The man took something out. Something golden, something shiny, a medal? Why the hell would Ren want a medal?
"You want freedom, I won't blackmail you, I won't threaten you. I'll keep my promise, this place will not be like where you came from. Instead, this medal symbolizes ultimate freedom. It's the badge each of us Headmasters holds. It's the top of the top. As you know I am the Head Master of the Informants. I want to retire soon, and I need a replacement. So what better than you, but I need to test you first. So what do you say, Ren? What better freedom than being the boss? No one else will ever be above you, you make the rules." Alexander said his eyes brimming with a challenge.
"And what would prevent you from taking back this badge? The position? What makes you think I want it?" Ren said her arms still crossed in front of her chest as she stared at the medal. "Because, I'm sick of this life, of the games I play with my siblings, there is much you don't know about this world, or maybe you do. And if you do, which I'm assuming your mother has shown you, then you'd want this medal. Because I know why you stopped all the cuts. They couldn't be more than what five, six years old? Tell me when did you start realizing that vengeance was a much better role for your life? As for how I will ensure that I do not get back into the position, well, you how pain stops don't you?" Alexander said as Ren stood. Staring Alexander dead in the eyes she smiled a vicious grin like the Vulture she was.
"I'll have the information by the end of the week," Ren said before walking calmly out the door her face back to being the placid neutral expression it always was.
The screams, the blood, the bones. Have you ever heard of bones breaking inside human flesh? The sound of a bullet piercing through your kneecap? Ren tossed and turned in the bed, her hair scattered around her like a mass of spider webs atop her satiny navy blue pillowcase. Its silk strands clinging against one another twisting and turning as Ren gasped for air. Sitting straight up Ren clenched her heart trying to soothe the rapid rhythm of its beatings. 'Why didn't you do it? I told you to kill him! You or him princess! You! Or! Him! Choose, now Ren!"
"God, you are an utter waste of space, I have told you numerous times not to make me angry Ren. You have so much potential if only you'd just listen!"
Bang!
Ren could still feel the cold soft feather-like skin as it held her hands. As the figures pushed against hers. As the cool metal dug into her slim tiny fingers.
And down went the boy, he was what? Seven? Six? All Ren knew was they were siblings, they all were. She didn't know him, he didn't know her, at least she didn't think so. She didn't mean to fire the gun, she didn't want to. The boy wasn't her first kill though. If he was Ren wouldn't even have been able to kill him.
Little Ren her black hair plastered to her sopping puffy red face looked back at the "mother" as the disappointment oozed like molasses down at little Ren. With her face masked in tears and snot "Mother" simply sneered down at the creature that was Ren flipping her hands in the air like she was batting away a fly. "You've disappointed me today Ren, a princess should always do what she's ordered. I told you the boy was wrong, you should have listened. Take her away."
"Mother's" back was already turned as he made those comments. And just before the door could slam in front of little Ren's walling body the electric voltage of 1,000 kilowatts was already coursing through her tiny body. But she knew they weren't going to let her stay unconscious for long. She was five at the time.
Since Ren couldn't sleep she decided to go downstairs and get some training done. The locker rooms were, painted a grey color, Ren was starting to think the infromants section was painted all grey. The color for this branch of the organization. She'd seen other colors of course. Orange for the Mercenaries. And blue for the Researchers, I guess Grey was for the Informants. Ren would think grey should have been the color for the entire organization, it was named the "Grey" after all.
Opening her locker she pulled out her uniform, grey. Right. Of course. She was an Informant after all. Sighing she closed the locker getting ready to change into something more breathable so she could work out when a face popped up in front of her. Trained as she was, Ren didn't even so much as flinch as she greeted the orange-eyed red-haired man, with a hint of yellow flecks in his eyes. The cocky bastard as Ren started to label him, was leering down at her. His gaze lingered on her tits, which really wasn't all that much to stare at as Ren rolled her eyes. Then proceeded to strip. She had to get changed after all. And Ren's changed countless times in front of other boys her age before. So it wasn't as if this was anything new to Ren besides she could picture his shocked look now.
She knew for all his boasting Kyle was still a little innocent inside. As she looked back up now fully changed at a gawking Kyle. "What, haven't you ever seen a girl before?" Ren said her lips couldn't help but tilt up. Kyle just stood there mouth a gap, no one had ever pulled that in front of Kyle before, at least not outside the bedroom. Ren sighed as she rolled her eyes, Turning and leaving the neutral locker rooms. "You're gonna catch flies if you leave it hanging."
