Chapter One - Drogos

The day was still young, and there was still several more hours before nightfall came. Drogos Grant rest peacefully in his room. The room was a very dark room with black curtains and the walls were painted a dark navy blue. He had a sign on his door that read ‘do not enter’ for the new cleaning person that he had ordered Boggle to hire.

As Drogos lays in his bed, he begins to sink into a dream limbo. Limbo being the vampire’s equivance to the human’s sleep state where they would dream. This long day, Drogos begins to dream:

A younger version of him was walking along the corridor with a black door in sight. The corridor was covered in twisted vines against the marble walls on either side of Drogos. Sweat rolled down his forehead. His breathing had increased to an audible low sound, and he was shaking ever so slightly. However, he still approached the door knowing that he would not like what he would see on the other side of the room.

Reaching the door, Drogos, his bright red eyes wide with fear, looks up at the black door. He extends a small, shaky hand toward the door to grab hold of the knob that twisted obediently at his gentle turn. The door opened without a sound, and the small vampire steps inside…

“...running late, but I'm sure she will be here. She insisted she can still do her job. And has offered to finish preparing the meal. Not that I've asked.” The voice of his butler, Boggle, cut into his dream.

A sharp inhale from him alerted his goblin servant to his consciousness. Opening an eye, he turned his head in the direction of the door, where he knew Boggle would be waiting for his acknowledgment. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, the sweet voice of a woman beat him to the punch.

“Let her come,” she said.

Drogos's gaze wandered his surroundings. Luna – who's long, black hair was one side of a coin to her personality – stood in front of his mirror, brushing her hair. With her high-society upbringing, she was more spoiled and snobbish than most. A classy lady who was comfortable in her own skin. Oftentimes,  Drogos found Luna overbearing. Her claims of affectionate love toward him was off putting.

“So she’ll get to meet her bosses. We can’t put aside the party just because she decided to be late. Besides, we do need this place clean and she said she'll help service our guests when they arrive.”

“Splendid idea, My Lady.” A breaded man spoke. Locking his hands behind his back, he gave a small nod from his position near Luna.

Ah Albert. You're beaming. Tell Luna you love her before you lose her.

Albert Grants. He followed the ways of a traditional gentleman, despite his failed attempts to woo the target of his love.

Drogos noticed Judy Grants, a girl who wore more black than anything, standing on Luna's other side. Her ankles and arms were crossed while she leaned against the dresses. She was looking away from him. Drogos hated it when she turned her back to the world. He looks away from the gothic vampire and to the small vampire tucked at his side.

Marie, his adopted sister, napped peacefully despite the conversation taking place. He didn't mind her sleeping in his bed every once in awhile, but he could never understand the facade she enjoyed putting on every day.

His attention was drawn to the foot on his bed when he felt a light bounce. Finding Jewel there, he frowned. The mischievous blonde grinned at his bed. It was as if he didn't care that Drogos was trying to sleep there.

Drogos noticed Draco, last but not least, leaning against the wall beside the door just before he addressed Boggle. The same non-caring expression seemed to be stretched into his features permanently.

Meeting his servant's eyes, he spoke as clearly as he could without allowing the annoyance toward his members showed. “Boggle, just tell her that she will be expected to go about her normal route as if we weren't around. Everyone here will be on their best behaviors."

With a low bow, Boggle excused himself.

“Dirty creature. You should return him to the stumps he came from” Draco muttered audibly, which disappointed his sire.

“Boggle is one of my greatest assets.” Drogos ran a hand through the bangs that covered the sides of his forehead. “Not only is he trustworthy and loyal, he's skilled at most tasks. And he is our day walker representative. Remember?”

Draco closed his eyes, refusing to look at his sire. “A stupid pawn more like it.”

“Hunters are slowly making their way through us,” huffed Drogos. “Boggle's human-like skin will protect us for a while longer. Be graceful to him, Draco. He doesn't have to remain my servant.”

Draco rolled his eyes. “Says the one who summoned him and form a pact with the gremlin.”

“I don't know about the rest of ya, but I'll try my best to keep up the good behavior “ Jewel stretched his body out as he stood. The mischievous smirk on his face told his sire he was up to naughtiness as he directed his gaze to the woman grooming herself. “You're going get all pretty again?”

Luna narrowed her eyes at Jewel from the mirror.

Jewel chuckled and crossed the room. With a poke of a key, an image of their newest employee appeared on the laptop. “Why'd you choose her, Drogos?”

It's not late enough for his games. Drogos watched his siree through neural eyes.

Jewel tilted his head to one side. And then another while studying the image. “She reminds you of some long lost love? Or is it that kissable mouth of hers? Unlike Luna, her lips are plumper.”

“My lips are the works of the gods, you dumb witted fool!” Luna snarled at him, direction an angrily glare his way.

“And that is my cue,” Judy said, shoving her hands into her pockets and heading to the door.

Having enough of Jewel's games. Drogos made his move. He stood just behind Jewel within a second. A small space kept his body from fully touching the other. Reaching around the curly haired vampire, he spoke near his ear. “That's none of your business, my friend. You'll do well to behave yourself tonight.”

The blush on Jewel's face had Drogos closing the lid of his laptop. He stepped to the side looking at the others. “I really don't feel like celebrating my birthday.”

“Oh, don't be that way, my love.” Luna brushed her hair more eagerly now that Jewel's pointless picking was put to a stop. “Everyone is looking forward to this night. You'll have fun, I know.”

Albert cleared his throat and he started to walk toward the door. “We should get ready. We each had a job to do soon.” He stopped to glance over his shoulder. “I suppose we all should get to it then. And I do request you all to behave toward our cleaning woman. I’ll hate it if she quits and we end up with someone who is boring.”

Drogos watched as the others filled out. Sighing he approached his bed once more. Pulling the cover over the still sleeping girl, he patted her head softly. “I wonder if Aliza Rucker is a hunter in disguise.”

“If she is, we'll take care of her for you.” The single sound of her setting her brush down filled the nearly quiet room.

“If she was, I think I'd be sad a bit. She is beautiful,” he said.

Luna shifted her hair over her shoulder, turning to face her sire. "I can't understand you, Drogos. You really shouldn't have an interest in a human. It's really unnatural to show an interest in food."

Drogos stops at the door of his shower. "Yes, I suppose it is unnatural" He smiles back at Luna and walks onward into the bathroom closing the door behind him.
