Uncle Jim's Scheme
Devil Anse was the first one awake the next morning. He got dressed and went to get a cup of coffee. He saw his second born son still wide awake and sitting in front of the girls' room while holding a rifle.
"Plan on killin' your brother with that boy?"
"No sir. Just incase he got any ideas."
"I wouldn't worry about him. He won't be out of bed today."
"She didn't deserve that Pa."
"I know. Johnse deserved what he got. I'm just tryin' ta figure out somethin'."
"What?" Cap asked.
"You'd do anything for your family, even your brother. You'd kill for any of them. Right?"
"Yes sir."
"Now you're willing to kill your family for her. And I don't think it'd just be Johnse. You'd kill anyone for her. Even Uncle Jim or me. I don't blame you. I'd kill anyone for your Ma, except you kids. Then she'd kill me. But do you understand what I'm sayin'?"
"No. I don't understand what's wrong with me. Before I'd never thought about killin' my brother over a girl but if she hadn't of stopped me last night Pa I would've." Cap was talking like he had a disease or something. Anse rolled his eyes.
"Ain't nothing wrong with ya boy. She just means a lot to ya. Go get a few hours of sleep. I'll watch her for ya." Even though Anse assured Cap he would look after her, and normally Anse's word was enough for Cap, he was hesitant.
"Thanks Pa." Cap yawned. Anse just nodded and smiled to his self.
When Cap walked in his room he purposely slammed his door. Johnse groaned and rolled to face him.
"What in the hell are you doin'? Why do you have a gun this early?"
"I was watchin' over Lydia. If you ever touch her again I'll kill you like I should've last night." He answered casually.
"Oh hell, just go fuck her and get it out of your system. You'll get over her when you realize she's no good in bed." Johnse rolled back on his side. Cap was steaming but thought about what Lydia told him about regret and let it go. He put up his gun and went to bed.
When Lydia woke up she quickly got dressed and went to the kitchen.
"Lydia would you mind doin' me a favor?" Levicy asked.
"Of course ma'am. What is it?"
"Will you take that basket and go gather a few eggs for breakfast?"
"Yes ma'am." She grabbed the basket.
Lydia went to the chicken coop and hesitantly went in.
"They're two pound chickens Lyddie. You can do this." She told herself. She slowly reached for an egg but was instead met with a sharp peck.
"OW!" She pulled her hand back.
"She's a mean one. Let me show you." Cap chuckled and quickly grabbed the egg she tried to get.
"You did the same thing I did."
"Yeah but I did it faster and with confidence. Animals can smell fear." He explained.
"Oh. Thank you." Lydia quickly reached for an egg and got it without being pecked.
"There ya go." Cap grinned.
While gathering eggs her sleeve came up. Cap noticed a finger shaped bruise around her wrist. He grabbed her arm and looked at it.
"Where did this come from?" He practically gowled.
"I guess it's from last night." She shrugged.
"He held you that hard!"
"Cap it's ok. It's over. You saved me remember?" She tried to calm him.
"I should've known he'd do that. I should've been watching you. I should've heard him get up. I should've got to you quicker. I should've killed him."
"Cap don't say that. You couldn't kill your brother. Trust me."
"I could for you."
"If you knew the real me you wouldn't want me."
"Show me the real you and I'll be the judge of that." He took a step closer to her.
"I better get these eggs to your Mother. After breakfast take a walk with me." She turned away from him and walked back to the house. Cap kicked a bucket across the coop and chickens and feathers went everywhere.
"That thang gettin' to ya boy?" Jim chuckled.
"No." He spat.
"Sure. That's why you're terrorizing the chickens."
"Leave me be Uncle Jim."
"I am. But think 'bout this, do you want ta bring her into this mess? If you get with her and the McCoy's find out she means something to you, they'll hurt or kill her. Governor's daughter or not." Jim had a point. Cap had not thought of that. He was so caught up in his own selfish desires he never thought about the consequences. He was just as bad as Johnse.
"Nothing will come of us Jim. No harm will come to her." Cap declared.
"But....there might be a way."
"What are you talkin' about Jim?"
"If you marry her the Governor will send the whole West Virginia army here to protect her."
"I'm not using her as a pawn in this game."
"Just a thought. We need her. If you won't do it then I'm sure Johnse would be more than willing to make her his bride."
"Johnse ain't gonna touch her."
"You care for her and she cares for you. Why not get some use out of it?" Jim said. Cap stormed off. He was not going to use Lydia like that. She was not a pawn in this like him. He is going to protect her from this at all cost, even if it means staying away from her and making her leave.
After breakfast the two of them rode around the property. They stopped at a small creek and sat down.
"I'm not the person you think I am Cap. I'm not perfect."
"No one's perfect Willie."
"Cap I'm....I'm a murderer."
